RESILIENCE DURING HURRICANES AMPHIBIOUS AND FLOATING RECREATION COMPLEX

The storm weather, overlaping between human populated area and natural waterfront on Galveston Bay create many problems, such as unsafe living environment, coastal erosion, flooding as well as lacking of access to the bay etc. To respond to it, I proposed a building which is “water and wind resistant; a building which is float rather than consuming land; a building which is integrated with the waterfront area and nature. The project includes one amphibious building and one floa ng building in order to adapt the floods during hurricanes, and the shape is inspired by wind resistant structures. It is a proposal for providing a joyful tourist a rac on for the hurricane influenced area - Galveston Bay .

MERMAID’S HOUSE SEAFRONT VILLA

Breeding abalone was once a prosperous business on Chimei island; however, due to the influences of riverbank engineering and seedling lesions, this business had gradually declined. Therefore, there are countless abandoned abalone pools le at the sea shore. A er the decline of the breeding industry, the development of the local economy had been significantly aected. This project provides a solu on to reuse these breeding structures. By transforming them into dis nc ve coastal villa with local iden ty, the island can a ract visitors who are seeking for a peace land to spend their holidays. And it creates opportuni es for the local economy.

DESIGN STRATEGY

1. REUSING THE OLD BREEDING POOL STRUCTURE. Reuse and reinforce the exis ng frame of the old breeding pools, new building and space grow. The structure is also u lized as the landscape pool, plan ng , leisure space, swimming pool.

CONNECTING PLATFORM Each space is connected by the wooden platform, green space is inbetween.

INTRODUCE TIDEL FLUCTUATION The pools are connected with the sea, so the water is introduced to the interior.

2. LAYER BY LAYER The building is stacked by four building units with space in between. The distance between each unit creates the semi-outdoor atmosphere and more sunlight for the rooms . In the center there is a wide open with high ceiling and view toward sea.

3 FLOAT FUTURE ON-LAKE DWELLINGS Taipei is the capital city in Taiwan and is a low-lying basin. Hundreds of years ago, it was once a submerged lagoon. In recent years, due to the changes of climate and the increasing rising of sea level, this low-lying capital city and other plain areas in Taiwan may face the crisis of being submerged. Therefore, I come up with the idea of the future lake city. The idea of the building mainly comes from the seeds of sea-floa ng plants. This project is also proposed to arouse the awareness of u lizing sustainable building resources and developing sustainable urban agriculture .

REHABILITATION OF MANGROVE WETLAND PARK + ECO EDUCATION CENTER

Period:2009-2011 Func on: City park & Educa onal center Type: Ecological Restora on (Par cipated in LEF, Posi on: Main designer)

The development of the city leads to many of the original green space and wetlands landfilled, which causes not only wildlife los ng their habitats, but also ci zen lacking healthy living environment. This project aims to restoring the lost nature in the city, and provide ci zen a quality space in which you can do outdoor ac vi es, and be educated by learning from its ecology system. It is a planning and design project to transform an abandoned Log Basin into a wetland park. I had completely taken part in this project from the beginning of the compe on in 2009 to the comple on of the construc on in 2011. This project had got lots of praises and awards domes cally and overseas. It has become a new wildlife habitat for birds and popular tourist a rac on.

INITIAL DESIGN PROCESS

PROPOSAL.C

PROPOSAL.B

PROPOSAL.A The ini al program was to dig the central part of the site as the as the restora on of mangrove areas. And the outer part is the coastal forest and trails. This program requires the excessive amount of soil and resulted in the lack of funds.

The central height of the island was the plan ng environment and the waterfront of the island replanted mangroves. But the excessive amount of soil was more than an acceptable amount.

The central part is an ecological restora on Island, and the outer lower-lying area is used as the restora on space of the mangrove. A er several adjustments and calcula ons, it was determined that the digging and filling should be done for the purpose of balance.

DEVELOPMENT A er many discussion and changing of the design, we finally reach consensus with Kaohsiung City Government, and find the best balance between habitat reserva on and tourist ac vity.

MOVE LIKE A SHRIMP This tourists center is located at the entrance of the park. The ground floor includes the changing rooms for canoeing and toilets. The 1st floor for mechanical and electrical equipment, including the monitoring room to receive the informa on from the monitoring tower. The 2nd floor is used as the exhibi on room to the display informa on of wetlands; it was also the entrance for entering the ecology island. Visitors can head to the island via the hangingbridge.

The site was an isolated island - Heping Island. The island was once the most eco coral island. Due to the development200of ship oat w warehouse to place canoeing boats Boat warehouse to place canoeing boats industry, half of the island has been concrete-filled as nd the relevant facilities and the relevant facilities the shipyard, storage place etc. These industry space is now abandoned a er the economy declined. The project aimed to restore these space into a educa onal coastal park. The surrounded coastal space can provide a safe space for different kinds of water ac vi es, and the remaining industrial buildings are transformed to museum, market space and recrea on center etc.
