EDITORIAL
Chers amis de l’Alliance Française,
Dear friends of Alliance Française,
Every year, March is a month with a lot of activities for Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam and its partners devoted for the promotion of the French language in Tanzania.
En 2018, on recense 274 millions de locuteurs francophones pour 20 % des échanges mondiaux. C’est une belle invitation à nous rejoindre pour découvrir notre langue, notre culture et nos valeurs.
In 2018, there are 274 million French speakers and they account for 20% of world trade. It is a stunning invitation to join us to discover our language, our culture and our values. It is therefore a rich program in cultural events that I propose to you to discover in this booklet which gathers in particular the program of the Francophonie week that will take place in Dar es Salaam and in Tanzania from March 16 to 24, 2018. The cultural meetings will include exhibitions, debates, meetings and shows. I particularly draw your attention to the show at the National Museum Theater on Sunday, March 18th. Presented in more than 10 countries, this duo of clowns will delight children from 8 years old.

This day, celebrated in more than 190 countries around the world, will be held in Dar es Salaam on April 26 in the precincts Slipway Terrace – Dar es Salaam, the event partner. Gender Equality in Tanzania: Myth or Reality? International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on 8th March to commemorate social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. In collaboration with the EU Delegation, Save the Children, Plan International, Femina Hip and Alliance Française de Dar es Salaam, Usawa Tanzania will celebrate gender equality in Tanzania with a photo exhibition and panel discussion: Panel Discussion - How do men look at gender equality? Our male panelists can help answer this question when they, under guidance by Chris Mauki, discuss the social and economic consequences of gender equality. The discussions will focus on the panelists’ efforts to promote gender equality in their day to day lives - at home and at work. Photo Exhibition - A photo exhibition on gender quality will be launched prior to the panel discussion and used to spark discussion between the panelists. The Tragicomic Destiny Of Tubby and Nottubby Théâtre Fools and Feathers This is the story of Tubby and Nottubby’s encounter, two larger-than-life characters whom destiny surprises one Christmas Eve on the threshold of despair. Propelling them on an extraordinary quest from the banks of the River Thames in London to beyond the realms of reality, the story explores both the tragic and comic dimensions of human experience. We follow Tubby and Nottubby, at once deceived by their illusions and carried by the beauty of their dreams as they meet a skull, survive a tempest, fall out and make up, sing to deceive fear and death itself, en route to their renaissance. Haunted by the breath of Shakespeare, bathed in the wonderful madness of Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, nourished by ancient myths, this show tells the force but also the fragility of friendship, love and dreams - the ultimate defence against the cruelty of the world. Organised by the High Commission of Canada. Played in French with English Subtitles.

Inauguration of the exhibition Searching for the Art of the Comic Strip “Once upon a time, a long time ago, a man could not read or write. Incidentally, the words “read” and “write” did not exist. No more than any other. To express himself, to tell, to venerate, he invented the drawing” .Comics is not the result of a discovery. It is the result of an ever stronger complicity between the desire to tell and the art of drawing. It is the most literary plastic arts. In Belgium, comics have grown into a veritable institution. In most Belgian homes you will find a collection of comics or even an entire library dedicated to comic strips. More than half of the books published or produced in Belgium are comics, but the real creators of the 20th century Belgian Kingdom of the Comic Strip are its more than seven hundred artists and scriptwriters.

MON ZANFAN (New album) by Davy Sicard (Reunion Island) Fifth album of a series thought like the fingers of the hand, « Mon Zanfan » marks a new turning point for Davy Sicard. The artist opens the music box that has rocked his childhood to address universal themes through the lens of the family and delivers a bright opus. It’s a music box that needs to be open delicately so as to hear the music of life. This box, Davy Sicard has long seen in the room of his mother. He was 8 years old when he succumbed to the magic of these few notes from the Swan Lake « le lac des cygnes ». Opening it again today in the introduction of his fifth album, the artist invites us as human being to question our most intimate: Childhood. The one we left behind with the good smell of the old Reunion Island. The one that we still feel sometimes vibrate in our hopes, our joys and our latent anger. The one that we’ve seen grown before our eyes, that will survive and to whom we’ll try to convey the best.
la force de la parole (2016) Each year at the University of Saint-Denis is held the contest “Eloquentia”, which aims to elect “the best speaker of the 93”. Students from this university from all backgrounds, decide to participate and prepare themselves. Thanks to professionals (lawyers, slamers, directors ...) who teach them the difficult exercise of public speaking. Over the weeks, they learn the subtle springs of rhetoric, and assert themselves, reveal themselves to others, and especially to themselves. Armed with these weapons, Leila, Elhadj, Eddy and the others, compete and try to win this contest to become “the best speaker of the 93”.

Tamara (2016)
Today, they are 25 years old and have finished school or already started working. When they were children, they all had to scavenge for survival in the trash dump of Stung Meanchey Cambodia. That is where a couple of French travellers, Christian and Marie-France, met them for the first time over 20 years ago. Ever since, they have struggled relentlessly to remove the children from such a hell. So far, they have helped around 10,000 children to get an education and build their future.
With her extra pounds, Tamara is not feeling good about herself. When she has just returned to high school, she is determined to impose herself among her classmates and finally to silence the evil languages that surround her. So, she bet with her best friend that she will manage to go out with the next boy who will be in class ... It is the beautiful Diego, a new student, who makes his appearance! The girl loses all her means. In addition, at home, things are not simple, because the mother of Tamara is on edge since she met a new lover. The year promises to be particularly charged with emotions.

African Spices By Bassima Houjeij Hamadi From the Mediterranean Sea, from Beryte (Phoenician) or Beyrutis, the city of Cypress and Pine trees, today called Beirut Bassima came all the way, fulfilled with a Phoenician/Roman blood to settle in the exquisite African city of Dar Es Salaam. Bassima is a Lebanese artist, writer, and also in the first place, an architect and founder of Arcadia World for Architecture & Design in Beirut, Lebanon. Bassima went beyond the common usual use of acrylics on canvas to express her presence for the first time in Africa. The choice and the mixture of colors and materials are the “African Spices” added on Canvas. By observing and contemplating the Tanzanian surrounding, Surrealism and the Abstract Expressionism served those “exotic” feelings. The African experience went beyond a two dimensional object to reach a three dimensional object which will share with us our everyday routine and which will add the “African Spices” into our life. Part of the exhibition is donated to the schools which are incapable of teaching French.

IFA BAND Jafari Rashid Igomba who is the only blind member of the group was the founding member of the group was born 26 years ago. His love for music pushed to visit rehearsals of a local band (BABA TONI) in his home village “Ligama” and this is where he learned to play acoustic guitar. In the year 2000 BABA TONI band ceased performing and Jafari decided to move to Ifakara district in Morogoro region, where he met with new friends who were also interested in music. This is how IFA Band was born in 2002, and stated performing around the town. Basically it can be described as a street band made up by 6 young boys, and this band is their main source of income. In their street performances IFA plays a mix of Copies if demanded by the audience, However the band has composed more than 30 own songs in different styles like Rhumba, traditional, Bongo Flava and “Muziki wa Dansi” rhythms.
