Hailee Steinfeld’s current role as writer Emily Dickinson on Apple TV Plus’ “Dickinson” has gained her lots of attention lately, but she’s not a new face in Hollywood. The 23-year-old first gained traction when she starred alongside Jeff Bridges in the 2010 movie “True Grit,” which she received an Oscar nomination for at just age 14. Since then, she’s shared the big screen with Hollywood’s A-list, including Harrison Ford and Viola Davis in “Ender’s Game,” Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffa-

lo in “Begin Again,” Anna Kendrick in two “Pitch Perfect” movies, and Woody Harrelson in “The Edge of Seventeen.” Steinfeld also starred as Charlie Watson in “Bumblebee,” voiced Gwen Stacy in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and appeared in Taylor Swift’s star-studded music video for “Bad Blood. In addition, Steinfeld is a singer who has released an EP, collaborated with other artists, and plans to drop new music in 2020.

Here are more things to know about the actress and singer: She was inspired to act at 8 years old after seeing her cousin in a commercial. Her cousin was doing commercials at the time, and Steinfeld recalled watching the ad on TV, then running to her parents and telling them she wanted to do the same thing. As a com-

promise, Steinfeld was told that if she took acting classes for a year and stuck with it, she would be allowed to pursue it. “It was the quickest year of my life,” she said.

She was a cheerleader for six years.

teinfeld’s older brother played football for six years, and the actress was a cheerleader for his team during that time.

Steinfeld beat out more than 15,000 girls for her Oscar-nominated role in “True Grit.” The filmmakers searched for the ideal actress through open casting calls in several cities across the US, in addition to online video submissions. They discovered Steinfeld at the California audition.

“Just the thought of it was kind of intimidating,” Steinfeld told The Hollywood Reporter about her audition. “But the minute I met [co-star Jeff Bridges], I realized that he was just there to do a job – and I’m there for the same reason, and I

kind of clicked with him and the Coen brothers [Joel and Ethan Cohen, who directed the film and wrote the screenplay].” Steinfeld auditioned three times and ended up on set filming the movie within a week. Her performance as the sassy young girl Mattie Ross delighted viewers and she earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Ways to Make Your Home Look Elegant on a Budget by Shelley little

Having a high-end looking home can be difficult, especially if you have a tight decorating budget. Fortunately, there are ways – even on a budget – that you can get the high-end look you dream of. Interior designers have shared a few secrets over the years that have given homeowners some insight on how they can make their home look elegant without breaking the bank. From adding pillows and a fresh coat of paint to window treatments and hardwood floors, these are simple solutions you need to know about. Here, you will discover 10 of the simplest and least expensive ways to make your home look elegant. Take the time to keep reading – you just might be surprised at these simple tricks to fooling your guests into thinking you live a high-end life. 1 ) Crown Molding – Details Matter It’s all in the details. When it comes to decorating your home to look high-end and custom-made, details are key. In this instance, the detail is crown molding. Crown molding has a way of making a room look complete or finished; it brings the ceiling and the walls together, giving them an elegant appearance. Without this finishing touch, rooms tend to look cheap or unfinished.

06

Fortunately, crown molding is relatively inexpensive (especially the plastic, paintable versions), making it affordable on almost any budget. There are many widths to choose from, but if you want a greater impact, chose the widest trim that your budget will allow. For the ultimate in glamour, try adding all types on molding to your home, i.e. crown, high baseboard, ceiling beams, columns, ceiling medallions, chair rails etc

2) Paint – Color Matters Paint color is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions to make when decorating a room, especially when the remaining décor will be based off the color palette. However, if elegance is what you are after, there are certain colors that add instant glamour to your home. Choose one of these two color options—bold and dramatic OR soft, understated hues. These hues allow you to add instant

3) Window Treatments – A Must-Have Accessory It’s simple—a home without window treatments will look unfinished and cheap. Fortunately, window treatments are one of the most budget-friendly ways to add some elegance to your home, as well as much-needed privacy. When selecting window treatments you want to make smart choices. For instance, choosing unlined flimsy materials look terribly cheap, even if they are the least expensive option. It is recommended that you avoid see-through materials. This does not mean that you can’t buy off-the-rack curtains. A lot of chain stores offer lined draperies that appear elegant and expensive —even though the price is right. When it comes to window treatments stick with elegant materials such as natural silk, linen and

elegance to your home. It simply depends on your color personality in terms of which option you choose. Painting interior doors black is another great idea. It automatically creates an expensive feeling, without causing much damage to your wallet. If you choose this option, however, be sure to add some black accessories to the space to tie the overall design together.

cotton (polyester or man-made fabrics usually look cheap). If draperies are not for you, then try woven bamboo shades or wood blinds. Just be sure to dress your windows— they ensure your home looks elegant and well-designed.

Winter provides the perfect excuse to throw on jeans and a sweater every day from December through to March, especially for lazy girls like myself. That said, some days call for more than just denim—I work in fashion and even I constantly need the inspiration of celebrities and the street style crowd to pull myself out of style ruts. Especially when New York Fashion Week rolls around in February. Though the next NYFW is still months away, I’m already taking note of how to cut down on my go-to outfit combination for the

colder months. To help, it’s time to brush up on winter’s biggest trends by looking at what your favorite street style stars are wearing. I’ve narrowed down the street style trends to eight digestible looks below. Give them a try, and say adios to the jean/sweater outfit (at least for six out of the seven days of the week).

Furry, Fuzzy Outerwear Parkas and puffers are great for winter, but when you really want to feel like a million bucks, nothing beats a plush faux fur coat. And you’re never too late to hop on this trend. This season’s offerings are better than ever (I’ve been on the hunt for a suitable option since last winter), with brands debuting furry coats in vibrant colors like pink and cobalt. If colorful fur isn’t your cup of tea, you can easily find a brown or black outerwear alternative. The coats are so cozy, you may even find yourself draped in one while you wait for the heat to be turned on.

Two-Tone Dresses

Everything Fleece Sandy Liang’s fleeces have become must-have items for the fashion crowd, and now it feels like all of our favorite brands are offering a fleece-something for the wintery season. Options include mixed prints and color-block designs in pullover styles or the more classic zip-ups we’ve all come to know and love. Fleece is comfortable, soft, warm—basically everything your body craves when the temperature drops to 50-degrees Fahrenheit and below. Give your denim and leather jackets a break for a cozier fleece pick, below.

Winter Suiting

The appeal of matching separates lies in the fact that you don’t have to overthink what to wear in the mornings— Can’t decide what color you want the one decision and you’re ready to head garment to come in? The two-tone out the door. It’s no surprise, then, look solves that problem. Instead of that pantsuits have become a staple in having to stick with one color, you have the option to wear a half-and-half a fashion girl’s closet, as evidenced by look for winter 2019. Not a fan of two- these street style shots. Whether you tone dresses? You can try an alternative choose a check set or a plain colored pantsuit, you’ll feel like an instant boss like this two-toned Givenchy blazwoman in the ensemble. The Roksanda er. This small mash up of hues won’t dramatically alter your look, but it will set is on my wishlist as the designer reimagined a pair of tailored trousers add a little intrigue—and earn you into a more sporty track style—comfy brownie points for style. and cool.

How To Be More Attractive 1. Be altruistic

Helping others with no thought for yourself has been shown to be more attractive than good looks when it comes to those looking for a long-term relationship. men who walked straight past. This wasn’t the case for women looking for short-term flings though.

by Rachel Hosie

Whilst there’s only so much you can do to change your looks, there are ways you can instantly increase your attractiveness to others.

2. Use metaphorical compliments According to Chinese researchers, women prefer men who use metaphorical language to compliment them.

Studies show that changes to your body language, your actions and even They claim that compliments like what you wear can boost your appeal. “Your eyes are morning dew” or “Your smile is a naughty goblin” are So don’t overhaul your looks by dying better received than literal expresyour hair, embarking on a fad diet or sions like “Your lips are so sexy.” getting a spray tan, embrace who you The theory is that using metaphorare but make yourself more attractive ical language requires more intelwith these scientifically proven meth- ligence than more obvious compliods.

ments. 3. Look directly at someone and smile It’s no secret that maintaining eye contact is an effective flirting technique, but according to scientific research, it actually makes you seem more attractive too. To boost your appeal the most, simply look directly at the target of your affections and smile at them. 4. Wear red Donning a frock or T-shirt in the colour of confidence really can make both men and women more attractive to the opposite sex, research has found. Wearing red makes men seem more dominant and successful, and when women wear red, they tap into men’s primitive desires and thus seem more sexually desirable. However when we put this theory to the test we had mixed results. 5. Modify your walk Swaying your hips or adopting a swagger when you walk can make women and men more attractive respectively, according to research. In fact, you could double your allure simply by walking in a different way. For women, it’s a case of swinging your hips from side to side, whereas men should walk with swagger in their shoulders.

Recipe by Jessieraftink For the rest of the lasagna: 1 package of noodles (should be around a pound in weight) - oven-ready or regular. 1 lb. mozzarella 1/2 lb. good quality parmesan 1 lb. ricotta cheese 1 egg dried oregano + basil Hardware: large pan to make the sauce in 13x9 baking dish - I recommend glass large pot for boiling pasta (if not using oven-ready noodles)

Making Meet Sauce Prep work and browning the meat! Roughly dice the onion, and mince as much garlic as you want. Once you’ve got the veggies prepped, film your sauce pan with olive oil. Heat the pan over medium and cook the ground beef and Italian sausage until browned. If a lot of fat seeps out, drain most of it. You need only a few tablespoons of fat to cook the onion and garlic in. Once you’ve drained the extra fat, throw in the onions and garlic. Stir this around for a few minutes over medium heat until the onions become soft. Then add in a few good pinches of Italian seasoning, a pinch of basil, oregano and salt, and a tablespoon or two of tomato paste Now, open both cans of tomatoes and dump them in. Mix it around for a moment, and bring to a light boil. Watch out for splatters! Lower the heat to a simmer and cover. Let the sauce simmer for at least a half hour while you do the rest of the prep work.

(It’s a trap, Money could be flowing to you in Cancer. A sun/Uranus trap.) Things more ways than one over the next couple weeks—and some of these should start clearing up on Wednesways may be as easy as asking for day though, as the new moon travels through your finance zone—might be the best time to start that creative path! Prep the Cheese and Finish the Sauce Grab out a couple handfuls of parmesan and mozzarella and put them in a small bowl - this will be for topping the lasagna. Place the ricotta into a large bowl, along with one egg. Add the rest of the parmesan and mozzarella, as well as a couple good pinches of Italian seasoning and basil. Mix this all together with your hands. Once you’re all done with the cheese, double check the sauce and adjust the flavors as necessary. You may need to add salt, sugar or more herbs - just keep adding and testing until it’s good for you! If you’re using fresh basil, chop up a handful and throw it in now. Once the basil is in, stir the sauce well and turn off the heat.

Assembling!

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F / 200 degrees C. Make sure your cheeses, noodles and sauce are all within easy reach. Ladle just enough sauce to cover the bottom of the pan. Then place noodles on top of the sauce just to cover, slightly overlapping. (If you’re using over-ready noodles, follow the box directions) If they’re broken, piece them together as much as possible. Spread 1/3 of the cheese mixture over the noodles. Now you’ll put more sauce over the cheese and then noodles, more cheese, and then sauce again. You repeat the basic build three times. For the fourth and final level, lay down your cheese mixture and top with the rest of the sauce. Now sprinkle the parmesan and mozzarella you set aside over it. Now bake at 375 F for 40 minutes - if you’re using a metal pan, check after 30 and make sure it’s not too dark! If it’s starting to get dark on top just pull it out. :)

by eharmony 1. Pick the perfect venue There are several things to consider when picking the perfect dinner date venue. The atmosphere should be relaxed – to put your date at ease – and quiet, so that you can have a decent conversation, but also luxurious enough that your date feels you’ve tried. Try to choose a restaurant with a varied menu that caters to all dietary requirements. A restaurant like Café Rouge has the perfect casual chic vibe for a date and offers a range of vegetarian options alongside French classics like Confit de Canard – it’s sure to impress even the pickiest eaters! 2. Don’t be self-conscious

about your order Never feel that you should order a salad if what you really want is a big plate of boeuf bourguignon! Or maybe you’re someone that’s happier diving into the sides menu (especially when halloumi fries are on offer) than going for a standard main. Don’t be self-conscious about your order. You date wants to spend time getting to know you, not criticise your culinary tastes. And do you really want to date someone who judges you for choosing a burger over soup, or vice versa? 3. Never be rude to the waiter

It’s a universal truth that you can tell a lot about a person from how they treat the restaurant staff. Are they polite or dismissive? If they’re the latter, it could be a sign that your date craves power, lacks empathy, or has a huge ego – not exactly desirable traits in a potential partner. You’ll likely find that your dinner date isn’t just rude to waiters, they may act in a demeaning way towards their family members and colleagues too.

4. Do eat… Sometimes nerves can get the better of you or you genuinely lose your appetite but if you’re on a dinner date, don’t be afraid to eat. Of course, you may still want to take precautions to ensure you don’t end up spilling, splashing or wearing your dinner! We’d recommend maybe skipping the moules and choosing steak frites instead. And don’t be afraid to use a knife and fork for dishes that you’d usually eat by hand such as pizza and burgers. If it makes you feel more comfortable, and helps conversation flow easily, then go for it 5. Take your time You might be a naturally speedy eater but racing through your meal when on a date will almost always come across as rude. It’ll either look like you’re eager to escape or make your date uncomfortable as you sit and watch them finish their meal. Take your time and make sure that you focus on keeping the conversation going as you eat. If you struggle to slow down, try taking a sip of water after every third bite, or make a conscious choice to put your knife and fork down at regular intervals.

by Stevie D 1. Je t’aime Language: French

What better way to start this amorous list than with French—and by extension Paris, the City of Love. People the world over travel to Paris to fall in love…with the food, the place and, of course, the people. If your paramour is of the French persuasion, just say, “Je t’aime.” You don’t even need flowers or chocolates for this one. Say it with wistful eyes, an enchanting smile and a face that says, “I really do love you,” and you’ll be golden.

You could cap the line with the French for “my darling” at the end, as a flourish. Say, “ma chérie,” if you’re saying

it to a woman or “mon chéri” if you’re confessing you love to a man. 2. Te amo Language: Spanish Spanish-speakers are arguably some of the most passionate people on God’s green Earth. You can taste that passion in their food, hear it in their music and you can definitely see that in their dances. Just check out some salsa, bachata or tango routines to see what I mean. It’s that fierce longing-anddesire-that-can-barely-becontained kind of passion.

The sweet and simple words te amo perfectly encapsulates that spirit, of lovers lost in each other’s arms. It’s an informal pronoun used, expressing real intimacy. And Spanish-speakers don’t toss amo around lightly—there are other ways of saying “like,” “like a lot” and “like-like” in their language. Amo is reserved for the real deal. If you’d like to put “forever” in there because you’re absolutely sure they’re the one you have to spend the rest of your life with, you can say, “te amo para siempre.

3. Ich liebe Dich Language: German Contrary to common misconception of the “cold, calculating German,” the Deutsche do know how to fall in love. Big time! The whole world is falling in love with them too. Just ask Heidi Klum, Claudia Schiffer and Diane Kruger. So, if ever in this lifetime you find yourself falling for a handsome or beautiful (or beautifully handsome) German, be prepared to say, “Ich liebe Dich.”

8. Main tumse pyar kartha hoon) Language: Hindi Over sixty percent of Indians still prefer arranged marriages. But don’t fret, many say that love must be part of the equation. And, hey, we’re really getting ahead of ourselves here talking about marriage and weddings here (which, by the way, last 3 days and involve the whole town and a whole lot of rituals and partying). The bottom line is that “main tumse pyar karta hoon” is the phrase you need to express love to a woman. To express this most profound emotion to a man, say, “main tumse pyar karti hoon.”

9. Se agapo Language: Greek After a long day philosophizing and mesmerizing the crowds, Socrates would have to walk home to his equally argumentative wife. Ever wondered how he would say “I love you” to her?

Just like that, 2019 is about to come to a close, and from what we saw on the S/S 20 runways, next year will be filled with even more sartorial greatness than ever before. But before we dive into next season, it’s a tradition here at Who What Wear to take a comprehensive look back at the fashion moments that defined the past year, the trends we bought on repeat, and the brands that made their mark, both new and old. Welcome to the 2019 Street Style Awards. So here’s how it worked: The editors at Who What Wear assembled a list of the 2019 trends that reigned supreme, created a voting form, and sent it out to all of you. Thanks to the reader votes and the votes of our very reputable panel of critics, the results are finally in. Speaking of critics, let’s meet them. This year, we are proud to present our four

critics, or panel of judges, if you will, each representing a different perspective in the industry. We have Caroline Maguire, fashion director of Shopbop; Law Roach, image architect; Acielle, fashion photographer of Style du Monde; and of course, our very own Who What Wear editor in chief, Kat Collings. Each of the reputable people above voted exactly how you did and chatted with us about why they chose what they did for each category. From the trend of the year to the rising brand we should all have on our radars, it’s officially time to present to you the winners of the 2019 Street Style Awards. So sit

back, relax, and enjoy our official year in review. Suiting might have won the Trend of the Year award, but following the success and longevity of suiting as a whole, it has officially become a wardrobe staple in closets everywhere rather than a fleeting trend. Tailored separates have now graced more runways, celebrities, and street style stars than we anticipated, and according to our readers, that is due to the fact that this trend is the “most wearable for everyday while still always looking chic.” If both the S/S and F/W runways taught us anything this year, it was that the industry is taking a drastic shift away from gimmicky trends and toward a more approachable way of dressing. Suiting is one of the most notable key players within that movement, as you can wear the pieces together or separate, not only giving you more bang for your buck but also rounding out your wardrobe. Fun Facts To Use When Introducing Yourself BY Jennifer Kustanovich

fter experiencing my first week of classes, I have learned that every student needs a handy-dandy list of fun facts about themselves to tell other people. Many professors use the first couple of classes to learn about their students, so you may need to think about who you are and how you want to introduce yourself to your professor and classmates. We all have that one go-to interesting fact about ourselves, but sometimes you just have to mix it up! A

1. My favorite hobby is... What do you do in your free time? Personally, I love to stay active! I am a competitive Latin dancer and enjoy teaching and taking Zumba classes, going to the gym, and hiking. 2. I love... Is there something, someone, or somewhere that you love? What makes your heart ache? What do you miss when it’s gone? I can say that I love my friends because I feel my most confident when I’m surrounded by those who love and support me.

3. I look up to... Is there someone you adore? Who mesmerizes you? Who do you wish to learn from? After watching “A Ballerina’s Tale,” I discovered Misty Copeland. In 2015 she became the first African American ballet dancer to become the Female Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre. Her passion, grace, and strength continuously motivate me to better myself as an athlete and an individual.

4. This art speaks to me because... Coco Chanel said, “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” This encourages me to always follow my heart no matter what. I will never follow society’s standards and norms because they do not define me. Chanel’s saying definitely influences my character and lifestyle. 5. A funny and/or embarrassing memory of me is... When you make others laugh they want to spend time and make memories with you! Don’t be afraid to embarrass yourself. You will come off as down to earth, easy-going, and loyal. 6. My siblings or lack thereof

influenced me by... I can go on and on about my brother, who is 10 years older than I. We have opposite personalities and despite the age gap, we’re quite close 7. My pet(s) are my life because... Only sad people don’t like hearing about furry creatures, even if your pets are slimy and slithering creatures all human beings enjoy hearing pet tales!
