PROLOGUE A slogan of the protests of 1968: It is forbidden to forbid ! Mexico poet Octavio Paz praise the poetic shines in it. Our own individual identity is what students protest for. However, we communicate and interfere with each other, in the integrity. I then realized this is the true meaning for Modernism. For architecture, there 3 ways of creating I am show solicitude for: renovation, intervention, growth. Correspond to them there 3 subjects about architecture: Education, Urban, Living. This is the process how I create, also the process how architect involved in creating the world. They keep interweave and overlapping in the years I study, generating new meanings. I will insert some art works and architectures that in different scale and functions to demonstrate. The first part is about education. In the case of renovation of the department of architecture. I pay close attention to how architecture can capture the essence of the question by continuously creating and how to incorporated the architectural hall which was outside the campus to the integrative time-space context. Not only renovate the building, also sees human’s activity as an object of renovation. In the case of designer’s library, I pay close attention to use the intervene of new ethnic group to readjust complicate urban ethnic groups and its own activity’s relationship to each other. So it can regain the energy and agglomerate to a new community center. This case is also the start of the second part: city. Through the observation to Taichung, city center moving outward, growth of real-estate business. All of these are challenging the original context. Through the cases of a bridge and urban plaza I interfere, to repair the fractured time-space context, restore the close relationship between citizens and water, and growth new urban activities in it. Part III Living: in the process of urban renewal, I pay close attention to on the scale of city how new housing can interfere with the gap in the old context. In architecture scale how to let dwellers living on the ground liking plants growing. In the case in Taichung, I discovered that people in Qingshui already living between ocean and mountains, let this relationship interfere into the incomplete site. Having a conversation with every house that is already there, repair the old community that is half abandoned, In the case in Shanghai, the new entrance and revenue house try to adjust the bad space quality and the context relationship between a 100 years old community and new develop city. City and architecture are crafting the multiple relationship between human to human and human to society. To me art work creating is external to architecture, it is a key step while I am trying to capture the essence of a problem, it’s also a way to brake boundary between sprit and material.

It is forbidden to forbid !

May we not say that Qian and Kun [= the yang and yin, or the undivided and divided lines] are the secret and substance of the Yi? Qian and Kun being established in their several places, the system of changes was thereby constituted. If Qian and Kun were taken away, there would be no means of seeing that system; and if that system were not seen, Qian and Kun would almost cease to act. Hence that which is antecedent to the material form exists, we say, as an ideal method, and that which is subsequent to the material form exists, we say, as a definite thing. — Yi Jing¡Xi Ci I suppose Organic building (Hugo Haring) is a center of visible and invisible things which beyond time and space so that the integrity emerged from it. On ecologically, what Gibson says is that the Affordance of an ecosystem is transformed into a new structure of Actuality (Liu dongyang, 2009). End of the day in the Humanities Building was over 8:00. Toward the church along the De Yao Road I walked down from the garden next to the staircase on the restaurant next to the Ming Yin Tang. There are seven or eight platforms high and low. Through the moon, I saw a banyan tree, leaving by a dozen bamboos. Then I remembered the tree lying down on the road this summer after the typhoon. My heart was moved. After been coming back I drawn the first picture and poem: The construction of a banyan tree. Banyan tree branches grow sprouts, showing a stirring life force so that a story of endless growth woven around the banyan tree. I observed the form of banyan tree and the things I read from it were the abstract lines and the extension of cross-section. While I was painting, the only thing I was thinking is vitality of the tree and the power of connecting sky and earth. At that time people were doing their own things on the different levels of the platform, I felt the sound and people surrounded me. After that, while I was sitting on the steps to think, looking up the church trough three buildings, I realized the campus space is flowing, and the flow of nature is endless. At that time in the full vitality of the atmosphere, I understood that the previous understanding of the banyan tree is wrong because without my own existence. Finally made the first piece of ink works. This is the first time propose the basic belief of Inexhaustible Maternity. After observing the Department hall in the view of flowing and the endless, I making three ink projects in the axis of entrance to courtyard: Model of the tree l ll lll. l looked the banyan tree as a model of flowing space), and finally I hang a rice paper tape floating in the hall. I thought it restores the essence of the hall since people are looking up while they were coming and going.

Design process:repeatedly drawing on the same papar. Size:781Ă—1086mmĂ—4 Material:Watercolour paper

Coming back to the Yi Jing, the power of growth only can happen in the Fourfold. When I saw the fallen down tree stood up again and new leaves were growing, I finally understood the Banyan tree not only showed me the visible and invisible things around it but also showed me sky and earth so that I noticed the integrity was emerging. Then I started to doing some practice on form like Trees grow out of department, but when I saw the Mountain & Brook Traveler Picture by Fankuan, I realized sky, earth, beings are combined by the mountain in the picture. The experience in front of the tree is the same with it and it’s the same with the wall in the department hall in my imagination. There is only different in scale between trees and mountains, I understand the tree, mountain and columns are the same thing. When I started to using Dialectical method on Found object, I combined the branches and plaster together and the new one was not only a tree but also a growing combination. The axis of the department hall then acts as a spatial sequence of the mountain-like walls and volume so that an invisible lifeworld under the axis start to be emerged and the two points of the axis are not real things but volume in the campus. We need to come back to the earth and root ourselves into it. The architecture education in Taiwan is rootless and the department hall of architecture is also outside itself of the whole campus. We are trained to design lifeless architecture but forget the integrity in which human beings are in a relationship between sky and earth. So I think a garden as a courtyard to combine the life with a space in which can body percept the changing nature is necessary for the department hall. Furthermore, I think a Chinese Yuanlin(Garden) is crucial for the department hall by that we can find the relationship with nature back which was once established by ancient Chinese people. Then the garden start to flow and it is necessary to combine people, trees, the wall and columns as a vitality-endlessly new structure of Actuality. 6

PART II: INTERVENTION | URBAN This is a project focus on how to superpose a new space system to an existing one and establish a new relationship between them. There was an exhibition needed a suspension system but the suspension points could not be fixed on the wall so that I designed a wooden shelf system which only touched the wall and look like a double skin on the wall. I would like to design the added things continue the existing context and intervene new events, activities and space systems. I deal with urban scale programs in the same way. 13

New city center Taichung city

There are three projects I practiced in Taichung city. In these projects, I always focus on how the new architecture intervened the existing urban system then a combined relationship emerged. The new one is not supposed to delete all the context but used to renovate the community which is losing vitality day by day. Taiwan Boulevard is becoming the main traffic system in Taichung while the city center was being moved from the old town designed by Japanese in east part to the new town in west part. In the same time, the rivers once take much part in residents’ life were cut straight and became sewers. In this situation, more and more young people move to the new city center in west part so that the old town has been dying. The task of these projects is how to intervene a new system in the old one as a renovation so that the new events and vitality could be grown from it. 14

When the river lost function, demands are going to solved by bridge. I try to rebuild the activities around water on the bridge so that the bridge is not only to connect the two sides but also to connect the water to people’s life so that the community is going to be connected by the bridges since which is supposed to act as a community center. Under the site, there is a corner part of Liuchuan. Since there being no water on the site anymore, I focus on how to call back the memory of water by architecture form and the sense of space. Then I intervened four river-like mass in the side and some overlapping boxes so that complex activities in city plaza could be suppoed to happen in these independent but connected volum.

D E S IG N E R L I BRARY H E T E R O -C O M MO N ALITY Site: Yizhong St. , Taichung city, Taiwan Building Area: 3600m2 Individual work

Site is located at the entrance of Yizhong St. night market, across the road is the largest department store in Taichung. Apart from lots visitors and residents there are also a high school, 2 universities and many cram schools in this vicinity. Complicated groups of people forming complicated activities which tangled together. Many heterogeneous spaces being put together and become the unique hybridity in Taiwan. Different group’s unique spaces construct different networks. The tangled on the suffice is actually a huge divide. The over complicated publicity become a burden to city spaces. To the designers, the library not only take its original purpose but also provide an exhibiting space to public. To the residents the library should become a park and a community center. To the students the library provides a place to discuss after school and place to perform. To the visitors the library is a like an art museum also a place for rest. The activities overlap to each other, not only forms a proper relationship between groups nut also generate new interflow between activities. For example, an exhibiting space can be used by all 4 groups at the same time, through organizing different moving line it become the hub of the community. In architectural practice, I fractured the large volume, generate a proper scale’s small volume. Reorganized them to correspond to site context, connect alleys and form a new relationship between groups and activities. Correspond to different activities’ need the space has its own space felling, light and mutative roof. Using the same level of floor to connect them make them whole again. Specifically, to different groups and moving line, not only I add chances to do activity together, I also forms a proper relationship between people. In the structure aspect the light correspond to the change of inside space, it also trying to use local material, scale and construction method to the continuous of city façade and space feeling. By the new programs interfere, it pays attention to repair the gap between groups and respond the challenge on city scale. Let library agglomerate to a bump, so the new relationships can keep growing.

Growth Material: Earth, Grass

After the serious earthquake in 1991, the floor cracked and the tiles are split. Then I plant grass from outside in these crack. Earth and grass fill the whole and grew from the floor. In this project, I focus on the power of growth which have to take roots deeper and grow to sky stronger. Simultaneously, the broken floor become full of vitality. I suppose this is a great demonstration of the way we should living as.

PART III: GROWTH | LIVING Being is a crucial topic in History of Philosophy. From Descartes to Kant, Philosophy was limited in Metaphysics. In 20 centuries, until Phenomenology has been established by Husserl then Heidegger developed it to Existential Philosophy. Heidegger told us that we have two living situation: Dasein and das man. Dasein is living-in-the-world. At this point, living become a very important topic in modern world. Heidegger judged we are harder and harder to live in poetry unless we are reaccepted in the Fourfold of earth, sky, gods, and mortals. Housing is an essential program in architecture not only because of the growing urbanize but also a heavy topic of Being. After the project: Growth, I started to think about how to pull dweller back to the earth, in philosophy which means how to connect beings to Being again. This is not only an abstract problem but also about our daily life and the world we are living in. This means how could architecture play a mean role. I think the space-time context must be considered which includes culture background, history of the community, the business and so on. Then architecture must to deliver power to the dweller and reconnect them to the integrity so that Growth at here become an important concept about how to fill vitality in the community again. In the following two projects, I concerned how to let the new housing to combine the lifeworld by form, function, space, construction and so on.

ARCH

HOUSE PLAN S:1/50

Shikumen is a unique living type in Far East Concession City. In Shanghai, by its huge amount it becomes the foundation of the city for over 100 years. There three points should be marked of Shikumen. First, it passes on a large degree of traditional living. Second, it used to be a close modern city life. Third, the first points combined a way of living that we can’t understand it easily. To people or to objects, form a proper relationship is the essence of life. City is form a group of people lives together, life is below the city’s spiritual order. We can see 2 points been implied in today’s city development. 1 We are limited to the past which is not clear. 2 A future that is not in control. The site is at No. 287, South Shanxi Rd. Shanghai. The only statement I can made is that it is in the city, in today’s Shanghai. Architecture is an interfere here, not only interfere with old buildings, it interferes with living. The new housing is at the entrance of the community, when the shop is not running anymore the entrance becomes only a passage, no longer carrying a complex effect it uses to have. The new housing keeps the original scale of plan and section. The orthogonal relationship between moving line and rooms. Through the new structure systems interfere it opens the stair case which it used to be sealed. By the orthogonal arches they bond to each other solves the forces, on the other side it recrafts the relationship between people inside the house. Try to capture a feeling that is unfamiliar but familiar at the same time. The continue arches crosses the entrance of the community, reform the meaning of the entrance, also try to established the connection with the city through the façade. In this design, under the current tome space context, how to manage the relationship between people, human and objects, to restore the order of living, is what I am concerning.

Between the sea and the mountain

Don't look at me Then sing a song Flying from under the tree vapor meet the soul condensed as dust of the universe. Do not talk Listening, sea is running to you The mountain behind become the sole umbrella

There is an old community on the side with decreasing residents so that some houses turned to ground, but there are some people still living inside so available site is not complete. The site is located at Qingshui( 清水 ). People live at the west of Aofeng mountain for a long time and go west further you can see the sea. The mountain and sea is not only important view on the site, but also let atmosphere on the site established. The housing will provide three types of units for older, young people and core family with three different kinds of size and activity. Then, in the arrangements of volume, I tried to touch the existing houses on the site by a twists and turns bar and focused on how to embed architecture into the site. Second, in the arrangements of units, I set the units for older facing the northern so that the older could enjoy enough sunshine and the units for core families are arranged isolated at the north part of the site. Mr. Chen-kuen Lee( 李承寬 ) said that Architectures change people’s Weltanschauung by the course of time. Then I adjustment units plan to face different spatial demand. The older need stable sense of space so I designed a square units plan and a garden go inside the room so that a flowing core from outside to inside is established. I wish this action could bring more vitality to residents. Units for young people is defined by twists and turns walls. One point of the units directs to courtyard and the other one Outward extend to natural so that the life of young people will be flowing. Units for core families were set an atrium into stable plan so that the family could be connected tightly. Thirdly, the same spatial relationship was also reflected on the construction: wooden construction for young people. stuck in concrete construction for older.

Studying by sketches: How architecture and landscape touch the existing surrounding

43

I added a double evolution in mud-brick construction outside the volume. Inside the thick wall are many kinds of public space in different spatial atmosphere. The wall keeps noisy and heat out and common plastic out of a Chinese-garden-like flow of public space with landscape and low walls on the terrain. Inside the new community, you can only perceive each other or greet each other, to maintain their independence but in the integrity together.crosses the entrance of the community, reform the meaning of the entrance, also try to established the connection with the city through the faรงade. In this design, under the current tome space context, how to manage the relationship between people, human and objects, to restore the order of living, is what I am concerning.
