Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on January 18th, Mvezo, South Africa. He was a member of Thimphu Royalty and his father was a chief of Mvezo. He was a president of South Africa in 1994 to 1999. He was also the leader of African National Congress(ANC) from 1991 to 1997. The name Rolihlahla was named after his father. The name means “Pulling the branch of a tree” but also meant “Troublemaker”. Nelson Mandela was best known for being sent to prison for 27 years from nonviolent protesting for equal rights and apartheid. He was sent to Robben Island Prison and was transferred to Victor
Verster Prison in December 1988. On February 1990, he was finally got out of prison because of International Pressure. Nelson Mandela had a good impact on South Africa. Before Nelson Mandela protested for equal rights, the country had biased point of views and black people were treated unfairly. The country was unstable. After apartheid, thousands of people, especially black people were relieved and had more freedom and rights to use more public spaces. They had more education and there were less segregation between white people and black people.
How did Apartheid start? The local people which were black people lived originally in South Africa. However, people in the Europeans, Britons, and Germans and Netherlands came in search of wealth and in 1652. They were called White South Africans and so that was how it began. Nelson Mandela was sent to jail and he supported black people before and after he got out of jail. While Mandela was in jail, his wife Winnie fought for global awareness on apartheid. He became the president of South Africa.

People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite ” -Nelson MandelaHe was relied on various people of South Africa although Mandela, himself was inspired by a lot of people. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi and his two friends Walter Sisulu and Moses Kotane. He attempted University of Witwatersrand and took place in a group “Black rights” and that motivated him to fight for what he had believed in which was having equal rights and ending the issue of Apartheid. He was the only native African student and who was facing racism although he became friends with European, Jewish and Indian students. Nelson Mandela did numerous things to support equality. He continued serving for his country and became the president of South Africa. July 18th is Nelson Mandela Day. In this day, people have to devote 67 minutes helping people. The 67 represents Mandela serving his country. Another reason Mandela was sent to jail was that he bombed certain buildings, but only buildings to protect people. government thought he was a terrorist so he was sent to jail. Nelson Mandela died on December 5th 2013, Johannesburg, South Africa. The cause of death was Respiratory Infection. Thousands of citizens in South Africa were shocked and devastated about this situation. Mandela was a wise man and loved his country and his citizen. He has taught people to have the courage to take action for what they believe because of what he has did which was ending apartheid and racism. But most importantly to love each one another. Mandela, himself has influenced and inspired tons of people not only in South Africa but all over the world.
