By Jeannie Serpa With its 787 acres of various trails, saltwater ponds, and woodland, the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge offers a network of lands and waters managed specifically for the protection of wildlife and wildlife habitats. Priority public uses include hunting, fishing, hiking, photography, bird watching, and nature observation, all within the refuge`s mission. Donated by Ann Kenyon Morse and the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, it is a visitors` haven of wildlife habitats, upper woodlands, shrub lands, sandy beaches and dunes. Refuge staff and volunteers lead guided walks and conduct environmental education. Not into organized exploration? You may wish to simply hike along the many well maintained trails or walk at a leisurely pace and appreciate the beauty of this Rhode Island treasure. Trustom Pond is the only undeveloped coastal salt water pond in the state. It`s southern barrier remains one of the few nesting sites for two endangered species, the Least Tern and the Piping Plover. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset and the terrain is mild. Hiking trails include: -Otter Point Trail (0.8 miles, one way) - Osprey Point Trail (0.6 miles, one way) -Red Maple Swamp (0.6 miles, one way) - Farm Field Loop (0.5 miles) All this is open to the public at no charge and visitors are asked to comply with the refuge`s few requests: - Stay on designated trails. - Respect the fact that there are no picnic areas. - Dogs, horses and other pets are not allowed. - Kite flying is not permitted, since during bird nesting season, kites resemble larger birds that can frighten adult birds and cause them to abandon their nests. - The disturbance of, destruction, or removal of wildlife and vegetation is prohibited. Directions: From U.S. Route 1 North, take the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge exit (right) onto Moonstone Beach Road. Continue 1 mile to Matunick Schoolhouse Road and turn Right. Follow 0.7 miles to the refuge entrance on the left. From U.S. Route 1 South, make a U-turn across the median and proceed north to Moonstone Beach Road exitâ&#x20AC;Ś..and follow above.
