Central District Baptist Association Annual Session Program 2019

Page 1

My Sisters and My Brothers, Greetings in the soul saving and loving name of Jesus Christ our Lord! Welcome to the 150th (Sesquicentennial) Annual Session of the Central District Baptist Association (CDBA). Thank God, He is still on the Throne and has brought us back together another year! Our God is a Keeper! Our God is a Sustainer! Our God is a Provider, a Healer, a Way Maker, and so much more. In reflection, I marvel at God’s attributes and understand that only God’s Great Faithfulness, Grace and Mercy can explain how we are now here to celebrate the 150th Annual Session. We are still standing y’all! In retrospect, in the beginning of our journey as CDBA, our story may have looked bleak. Prior to 1865, our ancestors had been enslaved, prohibited from assembling, being educated, forming associations, making legal contracts and subjected to so many other human indecencies and terrors. Unfortunately at that time, most African American believers worshipped in the ‘Colored” or “Slave” section of predominantly white churches. By 1869, though most of us remained illiterate, we stampeded out of white churches to form our own institutions, associations and organizations. Our ancestors built educational institutions which included both my alma maters, Simmons College of Kentucky (originally named Kentucky Normal Theological Institute) and Kentucky State University. Also, organizations were founded such as the National Baptist Convention, The General Association and the Central District Baptist Association. Approximately 20 African American Baptist churches met at the Clay Street Baptist Church in Shelbyville, Kentucky to organize the Central District Baptist Association. Since that time, ministers and congregations of the CDBA have been involved in and impacted every spiritual and social movement in their African American community in which they served. The African American Church and numerous Associations, such as CDBA, became the center of community life for Black people. Through Reconstruction, the hatred and indignities of Jim Crow, Depressions and Recessions, storms and floods, World Wars, The Civil Rights Movement, Redlining, Riots, The War on Drugs which could be more accurately depicted as a “War on Black Males”, and the natural challenges of living in this current generation, we SURVIVED! There is much work to be done but our God ordained that we would continue. We have been granted grace, purpose, providence, protection and longevity. We are ready now and yet ready anew. I believe that God’s Word and His Love is still enough to serve and save this present age. As African Americans, it is nothing short of a miracle for an organization with an aim to help African American churches and congregations to still be in existence. Praise His Holy Name!!! I want to personally thank Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and Rev. Alyce French Johnson for hosting the Annual Session. I also thank all of the churches, pastors, community partners, presenters, each CDBA auxiliary and congregations. We pray to continue to Increase our Reach, Staying true to our Foundation. To God be the Glory!

Since 1979, The Reverend Dr. Kevin W Cosby has served as Senior Pastor of St. Stephen Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Due greatly to his practical and dynamic Bible teachings, the congregation has grown from 500 to approximately 14,000 members. During his tenure at St. Stephen, the church has transformed from the “little church on the corner” to a multi-faceted institution that includes a 1,700-seat worship center, a cutting-edge $4 million inner-city family life center and a 1,000-seat worship facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. In October 2013, Dr. Cosby began a church in Hardin County, Kentucky.

The providence of God is seen most clearly in Dr. Cosby’s ministry in the resurgence of Simmons College of Kentucky (SCKY). In 1997, the Lord led Dr. Cosby to encourage the church to purchase the original four-acre campus of Simmons University (now Simmons College of KY) and convert the property into a lifestyle enrichment campus. In 2005, Dr. Cosby was named the 13th President of Simmons. Two years later, because of his obedience to God’s guidance to purchase Simmons’ original campus a decade earlier, the college returned to their original campus. In the ten years of his tenure, he has refused more than $700,000 in salary from the college. Under his visionary direction, SCKY was granted accreditation by the Association of Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) in early 2014. Through President Cosby’s leadership, the college applied for official status as one of the nation’s Historically Black College & Universities (HBCU). In April 2015, Simmons College of Kentucky was officially designated the 107th HBCU. To God be the glory! A staunch proponent of education, Dr. Cosby earned a Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, a Master of Divinity degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from Eastern Kentucky University, Bellarmine University and Campbellsville University. Dr. Cosby has authored five highly-acclaimed books. He has been the subject of many national articles and documentaries, which consistently list him among Kentucky’s most influential leaders. In February 2015, the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights inducted Dr. Cosby into the Kentucky Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians at the state capitol. He is the 56th African American afforded this honor.

Although Dr. Cosby has achieved many notable accomplishments, he is most known for his intense commitment to serving the Lord through improving the lives of others. Dr. Cosby is married to the former Barnetta Turner; they are the parents of two adult children.
