Savoie-Technolac University of Savoie The campus Savoie-Technolac, which depends of the Savoie University, is localized on Le Bourget du Lac. This middle town is situated beside the Chambéry city, in the South-Est of France. It is especially concerning about environmental issues. Indeed, it is located at the edge of the lake of Le Bourget which is the biggest French natural lake, a very protected and delicate site of the Alps.

Since 2001, University has the norm ISO 14001 which means that they have an environmental management. That’s why there isn’t very big project about sustainability on the campus. They think that the best way to protect environment is every little act that people do. The University works on different aspects. The sorting of waste is one of the most important projects: there are a lot of collection points on the campus.

The waste which are sorting are: - Batteries - Neon lights - Cartridge boxes - Electric waste - Industrial waste - Classic waste as paper, cardboard, plastic, glass… They also try to optimize transports on the campus. Several points for carpool exist on Savoie-Technolac. It allows people not to use too much cars when only one is sufficient. Transport by bus is well developed: Le Bourget du Lac is not an important town, so with buses, people can keep a good link with Chambéry, a bigger city. Finally, bike and legs are the best way of transport in the University: lots of cycle lanes are installed and some roads are forbidden to car traffic.

Project: Produce artificial snow from effluents of water-treatment plants Like some European countries, many French middle-mountain towns, which the economy is based on winter sports, haven’t got a lot of natural water stocks. These ones are sufficient for the local human consumption but they are insufficient during the tourist flow, when the winter season comes. Indeed, the artificial snow production needs a lot of freshwater for its satisfaction.

For example, it is the case in the town of Les Houches, beside the Mont-Blanc Mountain. The totality of artificial snow is only produced from drinking water. So, we must find solutions to resolve that huge problem: this process is not durable and very expensive (it costs 110 000 Euros per year some years ago). In fact, we need to find an additional treatment channel with the aim of reusing treated water from wastewater treatment plant, before the snow-covered system. After studying different disinfection and filtration processes, we thought in a simple channel broken up in several parts: a filtration with sand filters in charge followed by a disinfection by U.V.’s radiations buckle. This wastewater treatment plant was built to treat a capacity of 65 000 inhabitants. It treats waste water which comes from the towns of Les Houches and Chamonix, but no industrial or chemical effluents. This increase in value of effluents is a profitable process and it protects the environment.
