We at Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta are running a project that aims at promoting the use of renewable sources of energy and reduction of energy consumption on campus. The campus has a population of 1200 and consumes 400000 KWh units of electricity per annum. The electricity is provided by the state electricity board which is primarily a thermal power based grid. To avoid sourcing power from thermal powered grids, renewable energy systems have already been installed. Also more renewable energy systems utilizing waste generated on campus are on the anvil. The project began with no-regret measures such as awareness programmes that increased environment consciousness and changed energy consumption lifestyle. The following measures have been taken to reduce dependency on non renewable sources of energy. Events:  Competition between hostels on the lowest consumption of electricity Installations done:  Installation of 24 Solar Panels that are a major source of power for the student hostels  Installation of AC Controllers and Thermostats,  Replacement of Fan regulators Planned installations:  Installation of a Biomass Plant that uses campus waste  Replacement of tube lights with CFL lamps  Metering at strategic points to gauge consumption of electricity at various sections of the campus Though we have achieved reduction in consumption of energy and dependence on external grid, the ultimate objective is a selfsustainable campus that powers its own energy needs through renewable and sustainable measures.
