Sustainable Project at the University of Tokyo
Note PC Reuse Project This project started last year, and is a part of the University of Tokyo’s efforts to make effective use of resources, to reduce the environmental impact of our activities at the university, and to provide support for university students for studying. The beginning of this project was one suggestion by a student to the office, “Will you recycle the PCs as waste products in the campus?” Then, this project started. The project office collects the used laptop computers from the laboratories or individuals at the university and lends them to our students for free. Now, we finished the third application period and have provided about
100 computers to students since this project started.

■ If one reuse note PC is used by a student, it will save 80 kg of CO2. ■ There are three application periods in a year, and the number of PCs recollected is 336(included PCs which can’t be reused, but they are decomposed and the available parts are picked out) from July 2009 to May 2010, ■ The number of applicants are now over that of supplies (232 applicants/ Reuse PC user: “I have a better life with a reuse PC”
37 supplies in the first periods in 2009), which means the probability and necessity of this sustainable project. ■ We need to get this project across to whole our university, leading the rise of recollection rate as well as reparation rate. And we hope to extend
this project to other resources as a next step. Written by Misako Matsuba
