Crews from Grand Trunk Railroad have been working on upgrades to the crossing at M-15 in Davison this past week. While details on the work were unavailable, a number of new crossing lights are waiting for installation and this crew was hard at work behind Whitey’s Restaurant, Jan. 9.

DAVISON — The city received a clean audit report from Plante & Moran at the Jan. 9 city council meeting.

It was advised, however, to change some of its accounting practices.

Amanda Cronk, an accountant with Plante & Moran, said the city has made strides in keeping its expenditures down in light of declining revenues. Overall in the past year the city has lost another $131,000 in property taxes as values continue to decline.

In 2009, Cronk said the city collected $1,718,738 in property taxes. In 2010 that number declined to $1,662,181, while in 2011 it was at $1,530,982.

Across the board the city has kept expenditures down, citing reductions since 2009 in public works of nearly $400,000, in recreation of almost $130,000 and in public safety of almost $400,000.

Despite economic hard times, the auditors praised the city for keeping a general fund balance in 2011 of $1,148,904.

Falling bricks prompt barricades

Dan Romzek resigns from Davison schools Young now director of business services DAVISON — Director of Finance and Operations Dan Romzek has accepted the position of assistant superintendent for business affairs with Rochester Community Schools.

Romzek has been with the district since 2001.

“Dan’s sharp focus during these volatile times of school funding has aided the district in remaining fiscally responsible to our community,” said Superintendent Eric Lieske. “This is a great career step for Dan and he’ll be greatly missed by the district and me personally.”

With the departure of Romzek, Lieske has promoted district accountant Leslie Young to director of business services. Lieske will oversee district operations and Custodial and Maintenance Supervisor Phil Thom will have additional duties in the area of facilities.

The changes officially go into effect Jan. 23 when Romzek begins his new job with Rochester.

Young, who joined the Davison district nearly two years ago, earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from Central Michigan University and her master’s in business administration from the University of Michigan-

Flint.

Before coming to Davison almost two years ago, Young worked as the Dan Romzek accounting clerk at CarmanAinsworth Schools for six years.

She has also worked as an accountant in the private sector.

“Leslie has been an asset in the Business Office for the past 18 months,” said Lieske. “Her strong background in school finance will be highly beneficial as we continue to maneuver through these challenging economic times.”

Young currently serves as vice president of the Genesee Area School Business Officials Association and is a member of the Michigan School Business Leslie Young Officials Association.

“I am very excited and thankful that Davison has offered me this opportunity,” Young said. “I’m looking forward to working with everybody.”

Thom, who has been with the district 25 years, will now have the title of supervisor of custodial/maintenance and facilities.

“Phil has an extensive historical background on the facilities in our school district,” said Lieske.

“This fits very well with Phil’s other duties and should be a Phil Thom seamless transition for him to assume these new additional duties.” — G.G.

DAVISON — City officials have ordered a section of sidewalk and parking spaces on Main Street barricaded until repairs can be carried out on a building there which has seen several bricks fall from its facade in recent days.

The building at 220 and 216 N. Main St. — which houses The Davison Index, Dirty Paws Pet Grooming and several apartments — has been dropping bricks onto the street and sidewalk below since cold weather came.

City Manager Michael Hart said as many as six bricks fell on Jan. 7, prompting the city to erect a barricade around the front of the building to warn people of the hazardous falling bricks.

“With the freezing and thawing that has happened this winter, it has caused some of the bricks to break off and fall,” said Hart. “No one has been hurt and nothing damaged, but something needs to be done about it.”

Longtime Davison, Lapeer coach dies

LAPEER — Sid DeCou, a teacher, coach and athletic director at Davison and Lapeer high schools for 33 years, died Dec. 26. He was 84.

DeCou played football at Flint Northern High, graduating in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-46 before returning to school and winning three letters as a center at Central Michigan University in 1948, ’49 and ’50.

After earning his teaching degree, he got a

job at Davison High as a teacher and assistant coach on the football team. He became head coach in 1953 and held that position for eight seasons, going 37-27-6. The Cardinals went 8-1 in 1955 and won the Genesee County B League championship, their first in 12 years.

DeCou also coached junior varsity basketball at Davison and guided the varsity track team to conference titles in 1954, ’55 and ’56. He served as the Cardinals’ athletic director for the 1960-61 school year.

teacher and assistant football coach. He assisted Jack Fitzpatrick for four years and became head coach in 1965. His teams went 7-2 in 1968 and 6-3 in 1969, Lapeer’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 1955-56.

DeCou also coached JV basketball at Lapeer and led the varsity golf team to its first Metro League championship in 1971.

DeCou passed away less than two months after the death of his wife, Barbara, on Oct. 31. They were married for 62 years and are survived by sons Sidney, Michael and David, and grandchildren Meredith, Napper, Zachary, Kaley and Foster.

“I guess I can sum it up best by quoting my favorite author, John Maxwell, who said ‘success is not really success without a successor’,” said Hrinik. “I feel successful today in having a successor like Richard Freeman Jr. He’s well-educated and well-versed in the operation of the police department.”

Freeman also had nothing but praise for Hrinik, whom he called a “true mentor.”

“I feel blessed. I’m being handed a professional police department with a great group of men and women,” said Freeman “I look forward to trying to fill (Hrinik’s) shoes while serving the residents of Davison Township.”

Freeman started as a patrol officer and was appointed to detective in 1999. Later that year he was promoted to lieutenant and then he became deputy chief when that post was created in 2009.

He is a 1989 Carman-Ainsworth High School graduate, earned his associate’s degree in 1996 from Mott Community College and received his bachelor’s degree from Baker College in 2009.

Freeman also is a 2000 graduate of the

School of Police Staff and Command, a 2009 graduate of the FBI National Academy and has more than 2,000 hours of law enforcement training under his belt.

Freeman and wife, Diane, have two daughters, Morgan and Madison.

Immediately after becoming chief, Freeman said he has no plans to make any major changes, but added he will take a good look at budget figures and organizational charts in the near future.

He said he is uncertain if the department will continue to have a deputy chief position, the elimination of which could be a cost-savings for the township.

Following the Jan. 9 vote, Freeman said he was thankful to have received the unanimous backing of the board.

“I appreciate the township board’s continued support and faith in me,” he said. “I look forward to continuing to work hard running the police department.”

Hrinik said Freeman has already stepped in twice in the past eight years and has taken over during his absences — once while Hrinik was at the FBI academy and the second time when he fell from his roof in 2009 and was injured.

“He’ll do just fine,” said Hrinik.

He added his retirement date is still tentative, but will definitely happen on or before Feb. 29.

The only other immediate solution, Hart said, would be putting up scaffolding and plywood to hold the bricks in place until repairs can be carried out.

Hart said the city has sent Sherman an official letter giving him 30 days to put the

building “back in good repair.”

“I'm trying to find someone to hire to do the work necessary to correct the problem,” said Sherman. “It's going to take some time to find the right person, determine the right fix and get it done. Obviously, I want to get it done as soon as possible and I started making phone calls to find someone as soon as the city contacted me."

Auditor Pamela Hill said the city needs to maintain that fund balance in order to weather future storms, adding it is right where it needs to be in case of an emergency.

Hill reported further that while the city had done well holding the line against a reduction in revenues and rising costs, there were some areas of improvement needed.

She recommended the city make accrual adjustments to its budget on a monthly basis rather than waiting until the end of the year to update its books. For instance, she said, if a resident were to make a late payment, it is often not recorded in the month the payment was intended for, but rather when it is received or even later.

Hill also suggested the city be more careful with bank reconciliation, meaning bank balances were sometimes incorrect and not balanced properly on a monthly basis.

Some funds were also moved between accounts, like the city using money from the water improvement fund to pay the water fund.

City Manager Michael Hart said his staff would have to work harder to change some of its practices.

“We have some work to do obviously,” he said. “The processes will be tightened up. I can’t say they’ll be perfect, but they will be as close as I can get it. The bar is being set here.”

The audit was conducted to meet the state’s requirement for the Economic Vitality Incentive Program (EVIP). The audit of the plan was sent to Lansing to further satisfy all the requirements for EVIP which will eventually lead to the city receiving all of its capital improvement money from Michigan.

Kessler said the audit identifies all the shared services between the four entities and suggests further potential savings through other possible joint ventures.

Mayor Tim Bishop called the report a useful guide for future planning.

“I think it’s great we got both of these presentations tonight,” he said. “With our goals and objectives meeting coming up, we’ll be loaded with stuff to talk about.”

The city council accepted both reports unanimously.

Bigger named Co-op Student of the Month

DAVISON — Tyler Bigger is Davison High School’s Co-op Student-of-the-Month for November 2011. Tyler is employed as an office assistant in the principal’s office at Davison High School.

Tyler has worked in the principal’s office since June 2011.

Christina McWilliams, Davison High School’s secretary to the principal nominated Tyler stating, “Tyler is highly motivated and has an outstanding work ethic. He is not afraid to show initiative and gets things done without being asked. He can keep things exciting while still getting his daily work done.”

Tyler said he likes co-op because “it is preparing me for

college by allowing me to work with others while learning time management. Plus, I’m saving for tuition.” Tyler has also volunteered more than 150 hours for Outreach East.

Tyler will be attending Mott Community College this fall where he plans to major in sports and entertainment marketing. He then plans to transfer to Northwood University.

Police Blotter Pistol missing from home RICHFIELD TWP. — A resident in the 10000 block of E. Mt. Morris Road reported a firearm missing from his home on Jan. 5. The subject told police he purchased a pistol and it needed some work, so he left it on his counter at home for several weeks until he got the parts he needed to make the repair. When he looked for the gun, police said it was missing. The incident is still under investigation.

Vacationing homeowner finds home broken into RICHFIELD TWP. — Police were called to a home in the 7100 block of Irish Road on Jan. 3 after a resident returned from vacation to find her home broken into. Chief Larry Gritzinger said the victim came home and found her front door had been forced open and property from inside was missing, including firearms and a motorcycle. The break-in happened some time between Dec. 27 and Jan. 3. Police are still investigating.

Truck in a ditch on State Rd. leads to OUI arrest RICHFIELD TWP. — An officer patrolling the 6000 block of S. State Road saw a red Dodge pickup truck in a ditch along M-15 on Jan. 2 at about 3 a.m. The officer stopped to investigate and the driver, a 23-year-old Florida man, told police he’d hit a patch of “black ice” causing him to lose control of his truck. There were two passengers in the truck and after the officer spoke

with all three, he was able to smell alcohol so he began a drunk driving investigation. The driver had a .15 blood alcohol content during a portable breathalyzer test. A Swartz Creek man who was in the truck also was found to have a .15 PBT result and a Swartz Creek woman, who was underage, was also found to have a .8 PBT result.

The driver was charged with operating while intoxicated and having an open intoxicant in his vehicle. The male passenger was cited for providing alcohol to a minor and the woman was charged as a minor in possession.

Pitbull found in yard DAVISON TWP. — A homeowner in the 11000 block of Lapeer Road found a pitbull on his back porch Jan. 2 and called police. The report was made about 3:32 p.m. Police found the dog in the man’s backyard and it had no tags or collar.

Genesee County Animal Control was called and an officer took the dog to the PAWS Shelter in Swartz Creek. If anyone knows who the dog belongs too, PAWS can be contacted at 810-6359649.

Two establishments ticketed in underage drinking sweep DAVISON TWP. — Undercover officers did a sweep of businesses in Davison Township that sell alcohol on Jan. 6 and cited two for serving minors.

In all 21 establishments, including restaurants and liquor stores, were checked and employees at two of the locations were cited.

“That’s very positive with the number of establishments we have,” said Dep. Chief Rick Freeman.

McLaren offering Nutrition Education Classes FLINT — McLaren’s Diabetes Education Program is offering “Weight Loss: Controlling Your Weight through Diet and Exercise.” This series of four, one-hour classes will cover: healthy food choices/portion control; exercise; grocery shopping/label reading; and fast food/eating out. Salvation Army collects 8,694 pounds of change FLINT — Thanks to the generous support of the Genesee County community, The Salvation Army has surpassed its annual Red Kettle Campaign fundraising goal of $840,500 by more than $28,000. This year’s red kettle campaign raised a total of $868,792.99 of which more than $93,000 was raised from pocket change alone.

That’s more than four tons of coins.

Out of the past Commercial property taxes went up in 1987 10 YEARS AGO Jan. 16, 2002 • City Manager Peter Auger updated the Davison City Council on drinking water treatment and the supply system project plan, Jan. 14. The city has been working to improve the city’s water standards to meet with federal arsenic guidelines. A preliminary water treatment timeline was set in December by Tetra-Tech MPS, including a presentation to the council by Jan. 28.

• It didn’t happen the way it was originally intended, but Rite Aid Pharmacy has a location on the “four corners” in Davison. The pharmacy chain purchased the northeast corner of Flint and State streets, previously a used car dealership, but plans to construct a store there stalled in the last two years. CVS was located on the southwest corner and constructed a store there in August. The two pharmacy stores came to an agreement recently resulting in a “store swap” where Rite Aid took over the CVS store.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 14, 1987 • Commercial property owners in Davison will see their assessments, and therefore their property taxes, jump by 11 percent in 1987. This was the word Monday from City Assessor Mark MacDermaid, as he addressed the city council. He said many commercial properties in the city have gone without adjustment for years and some are 10-12 percent below what they should be be paying in property taxes.

• Homeowners and business people in Davison should see their flooding problems relieved in the near future, but not without a price tag. The city council voted Monday night to issue bonds in the amount of $1.2 million for the purpose of building, repairing and upgrading storm sewers in the city.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 18, 1962 • Despite outstanding scoring by the Cards Jim Graves and Dave Sinclair, the DHS Cardinals dropped their second league basketball game to Grand Blanc 81-66. Graves, who netted 25 points, was the game’s leading scorer. Sinclair was second with 18 points.

• All students serving as Safety Patrol officers in Davison area schools have been invited to attend the Flint Shrine Circus Friday afternoon as guests of the Davison Chamber of Commerce.

100 YEARS AGO Jan. 12, 1912 • Last Sunday morning while preparing breakfast at her home on Flint Street, Mrs. Bert Currier’s face was badly blistered by steam from a dish on the stove in which she was cooking oatmeal. The oatmeal was being prepared in two dishes — one with oatmeal and the other with water. The dish containing the water formed a seal and built up heavy pressure inside which blew up when Mrs. Currier began stirring the contents.

• Melvin Hall of Davison wrote a letter last week to his parent’s describing “army life” after he left to join the U.S. Army’s 26 Company, Squad 7 in Columbus, Ohio. He described doing drills for more than three hours every morning after getting up at 6 a.m. to the sound of reveille being played. Obituaries LEWIS W. (BILL) BIRD, 73, of Ellenton, FL, previously of Otisville, Davison, and Grayling, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2011. He was born November 17, 1938 in Flint.

Lewis proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He attended both Michigan State University and Saginaw Valley State University. He retired from General Motors after 35 years. He was an avid gourmet cook, fisherman, hunter and golfer.

He leaves behind his wife, Jan; children, Patti Bird-Moore of Vancouver, WA, Matt (Paula) Bird of Farmington, Mike Bird of Mesa, AZ; step-son, Jeff (Karry) Clark of Vancouver, WA; 7 grandchildren, Kaylyn, Kyle, Kate, Lizzy, Jackie, Maddy, Landen; and great granddaughter, Tylyr.

Bill will be cremated and his ashes will be spread in some of his favorite places. Plans have not been made yet for a memorial.

MARJORIE M. WOOLMAN, 88, long time resident of Grand Blanc, passed away Friday, January 6, 2012 at Fenton Extended Care Facility.

Marjorie was born in Flint, on July 17, 1923, daughter of the late Herald and Cecilia (Butler) Boa. Marjorie Boa married Nelson Woolman on June 25, 1941. Nelson preceded her in death in 1998.

She was a member of Davison United Methodist Church. Marjorie was an avid BINGO player. She enjoyed Euchre, Pinochle, golf and camping with her family.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Dr. Fred (Bronwyn) Woolman of Alpena, MI, William J. (Cheryl) Woolman of Somerset, CA, Linda (Leonard) Price of Traverse City, MI, Dr. Michael (Marcia) Woolman of Odgen, VT, Gary (Dianne) Woolman of Davison and Lori Ann (Eugene) Beach of Highland, MI; 25 grandchildren; 31 greatgrandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister-inlaw, Maxine Martin of Burton.

She was preceded in death by brothers, William Boa and Maurice Boa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Davison Senior Center or Davison United Methodist Church.

A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison; Pastor Debbie Line officiated. Burial was in Ortonville Cemetery.

RUTH MARTHA (NEE BLUME) RICE, 89, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2012 at Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Born on April 28, 1922 on the family homestead in rural Hitchcock, South Dakota, she was the daughter of Herman Edward and Martha Mary Elizabeth (nee Hilkemeier) Blume. She was reared by her parents, her step-mother Susan (nee Nowell) and her loving aunts and uncles.

Ruth married Edwin Elver Rice on September 18, 1943 in Wilmington, Delaware. Theirs was a blessed and loving marriage for more than 60 years. Ruth was a chemistry major, first attending Dakota Wesleyan University and transferring to Michigan College of Mining & Technology where she met Edwin. She was awarded a Degree by Dakota Wesleyan in 2002. Ruth encouraged many women to seek further education and to never stop learning through reading, attending various lectures, and remaining informed through news media.

While she and Edwin were raising their family, they were both very active in Boy and Girl Scouts and in foreign youth exchange (Youth for Understanding).

Their home was opened to students from many countries including Uruguay, Japan and Germany.

Ruth was a committed volunteer in service to her community and her church. She was devoted to Life Blood and to the Red Cross as a twenty gallon blood donor and organizer of numerous blood drives. She provided countless hours to residents of the Memphis Veteranís Administration Hospital, St. Francis Nursing Home, Life Blood of Memphis and the Red Cross of Winston-Salem. Ruth was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem.

Surviving are their two sons: Charles E. (Cindy) Rice, Sr. of Jacksonville, Illinois; and Mehli (Baktu) Roshanravan of Coppell, Texas; two daughters: Mary (Steve) Trimmer of Gastonia, North Carolina; and Ruth (Keith) Cash of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; eight grandchildren: Matthew (Lori) Trimmer of Dubuque, Iowa; Mark (Jessica) Trimmer of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Michael (Racheal) Rice of Tucson, Arizona; Shayzreen (Matthew) Cassady of Plano, Texas; Shireen Roshanravan of Manhattan, Kansas; Charles E. Rice, Jr. of Jacksonville, Illinois; Rebecca (Matthew) Bathje of Aurora, Illinois; and James Rice of Istanbul, Turkey; and seven great-granddaughters: Katherine and Lillian Trimmer of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Abigail and Emily Trimmer of Dubuque, Iowa; Alice and Isabelle Bathje of Aurora, Illinois and Kaylee Rice of Tucson, Arizona. Also surviving is her sister Helen (John) Mitchell of Wills Point, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and step-mother, her loving aunts and uncles, and her daughter-in-law, Susan (nee Zaborski) Rice.

SWARTZ CREEK — While the holiday break afforded the Davison girls’ basketball team a little more than two weeks to savor the flavor of the season, last Friday that much-needed vacation from the everyday grind came to a screeching halt when the Lady Cardinals returned to the court for a non-conference contest against Flint Metro League rival Swartz Creek. In turn, Davison responded to this challenge by posting three players with double figures in the scoring charts on its way to the 56-41 victory over the Lady Dragons.

With nine players total taking the floor for the Lady Cardinals and eight scoring, stepping to the forefront with a team-high 11

points was junior guard/forward Mariah Ferris, junior center Tori Bellamy and junior point guard Kolbi Brow had 10 points each, and swooping in to score nine was senior guard Lauren Leach. Junior center Theresa Dray was also in the mix for Davison with seven points, junior guard Morgan Hitchcock scored five, and chipping in with three and one point, respectively, were sophomore guard Leela Leach and senior point guard Kendall Densmore.

While Davison hadn’t taken the court prior to this game since edging out Fenton at home on Dec. 21, the Lady Cardinals will return to action on Friday at Flint Powers in Big Nine competition, on Tuesday Clio comes to town, and on Jan. 19 the squad welcomes Flushing for another league contest.

DAVISON — A sluggish third quarter made all the difference when Davison faced Flint Northwestern on Tuesday, as the Cards were ahead by a slim 22-19 lead at the half after a strong 12-5 first quarter. That disintegrated after Northwestern poured in 19 points to Davison’s four in the third. Davison shook off the cobwebs with a 19-12 final stanza, but the damage had already been done to the tune of a 50-45 win for Northwestern.

The two teams battled to a 14-12 first quarter that favored Davison, but Creek put up 20 points in the second limiting Davison to 11. Not daunted by the 31-25 deficit it faced heading into the third, Davison kept pace with Creek and was outscored, 17-14, in the quarter, still looking at a 47-39 deficit.

Davison pulled to a tie, then pulled ahead after outscoring the Dragons, 15-9 in the fourth quarter for the 64-58 win.

JC Carrizales lit up the scoreboard with 29 points, while Lance Arnold chipped in with 18 points and Logan Richards had 12. Creek was led by Cal Henry's 15 points.

Davison hockey team gets seventh win BY

FLINT — While Davison is no longer in the top 10 of the most current varsity high school hockey rankings in Michigan for Div. 1, that didn’t stop the squad from stepping up to knock down Holland West Ottawa over the weekend on their home ice at the Perani Arena and Event Center, 7-5.

Holland actually came out strong in this one and took a two-goal lead in the first period with goals at 10:10 and 8:02 before Davison woke up and shot back to grab a 4-3 advantage in the second before locking down the victory with a trio of third session scores.

In the second period, Alex Dunckel socred at 15:57 assisted by Bobby Crawford and Brandon Pirtle, then Steven Stull tied the score assisted by Kyle Wendel and Steven Arterburn at 13:19.

Holland scored again at 11:46, then Pirtle bent the net at 7:06 assisted by Crawford and Dunckel.

Holland answered back at 6:04 to put the score at 4-3, but Dunckel negated that with a goal at 4:39 from Pirtle and Crawford.

Thomas wins fan vote for NHL All-Star Game BOSTON — Tim Thomas was the best goaltender in the National Hockey League last season, as evidenced by his second Vezina Trophy in three years.

NHL fans think he’s still the greatest.

Thomas was a landslide winner among goalies in the NHL All-Star Fan Balloting, receiving 626,540 votes for the Tim Hortons All-Star Game on Jan. 29 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Canada. The Davison native and Boston Bruins’ goalie finished more than 120,000 votes ahead of runner-up James Reimer of Toronto.

Provided he stays healthy, Thomas will be making his fourth straight appearance in the All-Star Game and will be looking for his fourth straight victory. He was the winning goalie in the 2008, 2009 and 2011 games, setting an NHL record for consecutive All-Star wins by a goalie. There was no All-Star Game in 2010 because of the Winter Olympics.

“It shows that he’s got some recognition around the league and people see him as the great goaltender that he is,” Bruins coach Claude Julien told NHL.com.

“At one point we have to get past the fact that he was an unknown and he’s come from nowhere. He did, but that’s in the past.”

Thomas has the statistics to back up his selection.

He is among the top five goalies in the NHL in goalsagainst average (1.99), save percentage (.938) and shutouts (4), and he is 17-7 in 26 games for the firstplace Bruins.

The 37-year-old Thomas won the Conn Smythe Trophy last year after leading Boston to the Stanley Cup championship. He brought the cup to Davison High for a public display last summer.

“I think it does matter to him,” Bruins captain Zdeno Chara told NHL.com when asked if winning the fan vote is important to Thomas. “He cares about things like that. He cares about fans. I don’t want to say he’s a guy that is always tracking the votes, but it’s a nice feeling when you see you’re getting support from fans.” — D.N.

Genesee County players help Junior Generals to win FLINT — On Sunday, the Flint Junior Generals of the NA3HL beat the Michigan Mountain Cats at Iceland Arena, 5-2, as Swartz Creek native Andrew Lay scored the game’s first goal for Flint on the power play with help from Davison senior Nicholas Goettel and Richard Jansson at 10:32 of the opening period.

After the Mountain Cats knotted things back up at 1-1 off the stick of Zachary Collins about five minutes later with a man advantage on passes by Andrew Carlson and Tyler Schofield, it was Grand Blanc’s Cody Damon who put the Junior Generals on top once again at 2-1 on the power play at 13:16 of the

It was a much different story last Saturday, as Flint ended up losing at the Metro Jets, 3-4, despite outshooting their hosts, 34-26, on the night, including 107 in the first period and 12-6 in the second. In goal for the Junior Generals, Benjamin Myers stopped 22 of the 26 shots sent his way to get pinned with the decision.

All this came on the heels of last Friday’s 4-2 win in Farmington over Michigan on goals by Warren Carter, Lay, Edward Osowski and Jacob Bearss. Assisting on those scores for Flint were Jansson, Joshua Kestner, Bearss, Damon and Carter. The Junior Generals will host Cleveland on Friday and Saturday at Iceland Arena. — M.S.

Warriors knock out North Stars FLINT — The Michigan Warriors of the North American Hockey League beat the Traverse City North Stars, 3-2, last Saturday at Perani Arena, as Tyler Perpich scored the game-winning goal with just under two minutes left in the second period. Having started the game with a 3-0 lead, Michigan used the victory to even its record at 16-16-5 on the year.

Last Friday, the Warriors took the ice for the first time in 2012 at home against Traverse City and found the waters much less hospitable after ending up on the wrong side of a 4-3 shootout decision. Michigan actually took a 3-1 lead after two periods on goals by Bobby Bodette, Derek Knetter and Ben Gislason before allowing a pair of scores in the third that led to a scoreless overtime session. That was followed by Traverse City’s Alex Taulein blasting one past Warriors goalie Brach Tiller to lock down the win.

After last Friday’s game, Michigan coach Moe Mantha announced he had promoted John Hamre to associate head coach. Hamre’s list of accomplishments includes coaching in Div. 1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association along with several international and professional squads in addition to earning his PhD from the University of Minnesota’s College of Education.

“John Hamre has shown complete dedication to the Warriors organization and has worked diligently to help our players develop, and we are proud to have him associated with our organization,” said Mantha.

The Cardinals took first in the 200-yard medley relay as Mellissa McDougall, David Rohrbeck, Michael Spears and Mick Schwerin combined for the victory. McDougall would earn the second spot in the 200-yard IM, while Schwerin came behind her in third. Stephen Button came in third in the 200-yard freestyle, while Rohrbeck came in third in the 50-yard freestyle.

Mellissa McDougall took a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, and also picked up second place in the 200-yard IM. Mick Schwerin also finished first, grabbing the win in the 100-yard backstroke.

David Rohrbeck claimed victory in the 100yard breaststroke, as well as the 50-yard freestyle. Michael Spears earned a third-place finish in the 200-yard IM, while Stephen Button came in third in the 200-yard freestyle, as well as the 500-yard freestyle.
