Ten teachers, some staff to receive layoff notices DAVISON — Due to projected budgetary constraints, the Davison Board of Education members approved issuing lay off notices to 10 teachers, three paraprofessionals and two secretaries, May 16. “We’re hopeful and optimistic that we will be able to bring the majority of the teachers back to work next year,” said Assistant Superintendent Kevin Brown. “It’s something we have to do procedurally but it’s not fun,” said Board Treasurer Kim Lindsay. “I hope it gets better. We’re still not at the finish line with the budget. We know that there is more money for schools but we don’t know what the Governor’s or Legislature’s next (move) is on that yet.” The board and teacher’s union recently ratified a one year contract with the district’s teachers which made concessions which amount to a $1.2 million savings for Davison schools, as well as a decrease in teacher salary steps for

DAVISON — At the border of the City of Davison and Davison Township, where the trail in Jack N. Abernathy Park connects with the Black Creek Trail, there now stands an arch considered a symbol of the unity between the two communities. The Davison Arch was dedicated during a ceremony May 12 attended by local leaders, business owners and residents. The metal structure, which spans the trail, was purchased for $10,000 by the Davison Community Fund and given to the community as a gift. The project was paid for entirely through private funds. Lori Tallman, chairman of the Davison Community Fund Advisory Committee, spoke during the ribboncutting and dedication. “It’s a dream come true,” she said. “It’s an example of the things we can do when we all come together.”

DAVISON — It was a day of firsts at Jack N. Abernathy Regional Park. May 14 was the first time the annual Parcel for the Park run/walk featured a 10k race and for the winner of that race, Nathan Wells of Davison, it was his first 10K win. “I feel amazing!” said Wells, 18, after completing the race in 37 minutes flat. Organizer Bob Callis also summed up the day by calling it “amazing.” Callis organized the race three years ago to help raise money toward the proposed purchase of a 40-acre parcel near Gale Road to expand the Regional Park. Callis said so far he’s raised more than $50,000 toward the goal of $200,000 needed to buy the property. The constant rain May 14 concerned Callis going into the event, but he said he was surprised to have a combined total of 260 participants in the 5K, 10K and 1/2K Kiddie Trot held during the event. Of that total, 140 were from Davison.

A runner, soaking wet from the rain, nears the finish line in Jack N. Abernathy Regional Park.
“I feel great!” said Callis as the runners started crossing the finish line. “I can’t control the weather though.” Despite the rain, Callis was pleased with the turnout and said he was also blessed with plenty of volunteers. This year, with the course expanded over to the Black Creek Trail in Davison Township, twice the number of volunteers were needed. Callis said there was good
support by the community and he thanked the additional volunteers who came from the Davison High School National Honor Society to help out. Helping with the refreshment stand was the Davison United Methodist Church who handed out doughnuts and coffee donated by Tim Horton’s, fresh fruits from VG’s and bottled water from the City of Davison.
Also there to help with the Kiddie Trot was the Gleaner’s Heritage Arbor organization. President Deb Caryl of Davison Township said the Heritage Arbor helped entertain the children for the Kiddie Trot while the other races were run, then sent the young runners out for their own race. In addition to arts and

DAVISON TWP. — If every dog has its day, then Monday was it. Dogs and their owners came together May 16 to mark the start of construction on the three-acre, $54,000 privately funded Davison Area Dog Park. A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of the proposed dog park on Gale Road, west of the Riegle Press building and Davison Airport on Gale Road, adjacent to the township’s Black
Creek Trail. Davison Township Supervisor Kurt Soper, Richfield Township Supervisor Joe Madore and Davison Mayor Tim Bishop, along with State Rep. Charles Smiley (D-Burton) and other local dignitaries were on hand for the ceremony. Gold Wing Road Riders hold Motorcycle Awareness event DAVISON TWP. — The Gold Wing Road Rider Association - Flag City Chapter recognized May as Motorcycle Awareness month with a display in front of the Flag City Diner, at the corner of Lapeer Road and M15 on May 6. The riders displayed several motorcycles, along with campers and trailers they often pull behind their bikes, hoping to raise awareness by motorists about motorcycle riders. “It is just a way to get people to remember to watch out for motorcycles,” said Gold Wing member Larry Kephart. “And for us, because we’ve been known to pull out in front of other vehicles too.” To join the Gold Wing Road Riders, which is a service organization made up of Gold Wing motorcycle enthusiasts, call 810-348-3702. Kephart said you don’t have to own a Gold Wing bike, just be a motorcycle enthusiast to join.

NEWS LAYOFFS from page 1 one year, a $215,000 savings. The move helped stave off deeper layoffs after the district projected a $5.9 million deficit next school year in the wake of Gov. Rick Snyder’s announcement that funding to all Michigan school districts would be reduced by $470 per pupil. Because of the savings prompted by the teacher’s contract and additional factors, including concessions in health care by administrators as well as non-affiliated staff, and a lower than expected bid in worker’s compensation insurance, the district is now looking at a deficit of $4.1 million. Board of Education members have agreed to fund half of the deficit using money from fund equity. It is not known yet if the district will have to cut more staff, something that depends largely on what happens in Lansing during the months ahead. — Gary Gould

DAVISON TWP. — The wait is finally over. Menards, 7410 E. Court St., opened for business Monday night after a brief “board cutting” ceremony held just inside the main entrance to the 240,000-square-foot store. The May 16 ceremony, which involved the cutting of a piece of lumber instead of the traditional ribbon, marked the end of more than three years of planning, construction and outfitting of the chain’s 262nd store. “On behalf of the Davison Township board, I take great pleasure in welcoming Menards to our community,” said Supervisor Kurt Soper, just moments before he used an electricsaw to cut the ceremonial board. “And wow! What a beautiful store and a great addition to our community.” Jim Coyer, general manager of the Davison Menards, welcomed officials and shoppers during the event and said he and his team are eager to meet the home improvement needs of the community. “We have 180 team members (employees) who are really excited to serve you,” Coyer told a crowd gathered for the official opening of the store. “We hope you like what you see, we worked hard to get the store ready for you.” Coyer and Dennis Dixon, operations manager for the Menards chain, said the employees hired to staff the Davison store have been a good group to work with and have proven them-

Comments about gas prices in Davison area are true I just read the comments from Penny Horgan concerning the gas stations in the Davison area. I am equally as mad as she is! I too never purchase any fuel from the stations in our town. I will sooner drive five miles out of the way to purchase fuel even if their prices are higher, which hardly ever happens. Fellow
Davison/Richfield neighbors, haven’t you noticed how these stations are always the first to make increases and the last to make reductions? These stations have no concern for the local community. We all need to take a stand and purchase our fuel elsewhere and maybe they will finally not take advantage of the residents in our areas. Shame on you! — Robert Stewart, Richfield Township

DAVISON TWP. — When six soldiers triumphantly raised the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi in the famous World War II Battle of Iwo Jima, U.S. Marine Pfc. John Michael Madill was too close to the
base of the mountain to witness that uplifting sight. But he was there in the thick of battle — part of the Marines 28th Regiment, 5th Division, assigned with the 3rd and 4th divisions to capture the island from the Japanese. The Davison WWII veteran, now 85, said he even knew Ira Hayes, one of the Marines immortalized in that iconic flag-raising photograph-cum-monument that

Anti-drug message delivered to DHS students Loved ones of children killed by heroin speak out BY AMANDA BRANIECKI 810-452-2647 • ABRANIECKI@MIHOMEPAPER.COM
DAVISON — When Briona Jawhari’s biological mother passed away from a drug overdose, her father, Sam Jawhari, said she was brave enough to speak out at the funeral on the effects and consequences drugs can have on an individual and their families. “She stood tall at her mother’s euology and told her friends, ‘This is what drugs do. This is the dead end road you are going to,” Sam Jawhari said. “Briona had a broken heart and now I feel her pain because I feel the same thing.” Briona, of Fenton Township, died on Feb. 14 at age 17 from a heroin overdose, and Jawhari said he had the difficult experience of telling her close friend, Erika Schlosser, 19, of her passing via a telephone call. “I told (Erika), ‘please, if you are into
this stuff get help,’” Jawhari said. “I was unable to get through to her. She died of a heroin overdose just two days after Briona.” Heartbroken by the deaths of his daughter and her close friend, Jawhari said he is determined to do whatever it takes to make sure no other parents experience the type of pain he has felt every day since Briona’s death. As part of his mission, Jawhari visited Davison High School on May 11 to take part in the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department’s and Community Parent Inc.’s “Chasing the Dragon” presentation which has also been featured at Lake Fenton and Linden high schools. The presentation was started in light of the increasing number of heroin and drug related deaths in Genesee County and aims at educating students on the realities of using drugs. “This is not a scare you straight program, it is an educational one,” Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell
Social Security
Many people are wrongly rejected when they apply for Social Security Disability benefits. Money was taken out of their paychecks for Social Security taxes to ensure that they would receive disability benefits if they could no longer work full-time. Sadly, the government denies approximately 60% of those who apply for disability benefits. Attorney J.B. Bieske can often make a winning difference at the application stage. And, if an appeal is necessary Bieske has won several hundred cases before a court date is even set. Those denied can appeal on their own but statistics for many years reveal that those represented by attorneys win a much higher percentage of appeals. And attorneys who specialize in Social Security Disability cases win a much higher percentage yet. Attorney Bieske has represented only Social Security Disability clients for over 27 years. That is the only type of law he practices. And, he personally interviews all clients and appears himself at all court hearings. Many large firms assign clients to young associate attorneys with much less experience; and often these firms aren’t even based in Michigan. In addition to practicing only Social Security disability law Bieske has written a book for attorneys about the subject. He also has been interviewed on various radio and television programs and has given speeches to many groups. Bieske’s office staff consists of paralegals and secretaries who are extremely helpful in answering questions with regard to the status of client’s cases and administrative procedure. Attorney Bieske welcomes you to call him to determine if you may be eligible for these benefits. He offers a free phone or office consultation. If Bieske represents you, there will be no fee charged until after the case is won. The fee is a percentage of retroactive benefits. In a recent radio interview attorney Bieske explained that many people are not even aware that they are eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. If you have an illness or injury (whether or not related to your work), are under 65 and unable to work full-time you may be eligible. Social Security Disability benefits are based on your work record or your deceased spouse’s work record (Widow’s/Widower’s benefits). Bieske represents clients from all over the state of Michigan. He has appeared numerous times before virtually all of the judges in the state. Call him at 1-800-331-3530 for a free consultation if you have been denied. Or if you are thinking of possibly applying for Social Security benefits call him for free advice. www.ssdfighter.com 18

As those affected by drugs gather around a coffin during the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department and Community Parents Inc.’s “Chasing the Dragon” presentation at Davison High School, Pastor Jim Wiegand encourages students struggling with drugs to seek help before it is too late.
said. “We want to encourage you to get help if you need it.” “Chasing the Dragon” was presented to the entire student body at Davison High School and featured real-life accounts from a drug dealer with four felonies, Pastor Jim Wiegand who is a recovering drug addict that began using drugs at age 4, Deputy Tori Hank whose sister struggled with a cocaine addiction before being robbed and strangled to death by drug dealers in her Grand Blanc apartment and Sam Jawhari himself. “Every time I go through this presentation it sucks the life out of me,” Jawhari said. “I relive (Briona’s) death every time.” Along with the speakers, students were shown a slideshow of graphic images of the physical effects of using drugs and what Pickell called a “gutwrenching” 911 audio recording of Jawhari and his wife’s frantic attempts to revive Briona. “Every time I hear it I keep hoping for a different result, but there isn’t one,” Jawhari told the students after listening to the audio recording. “I picked up this torch though because of Briona and I want to save anyone willing to listen. No one is bigger than drugs.” Jawhari recounted how his daughter’s addiction to drugs began when she was 15 with prescription drugs and how it slowly progressed eventually reaching heroin. Briona had left Lake Fenton High School to attend rehab for her drug abuse, but Jawhari said she was hanging out with the wrong crowd. “She met an older boy who was into these drugs and she thought, ‘I couldn’t save my mom, but I can save him,’”
The Davison INDEX
Jawhari recalls. “For loving him though, he stuck that needle in her arm for the first time.” With tears in his eyes, Jawhari urged students to take a stand and put drug dealers out of business. “I want you to stand up and be accountable and turn these people, the ones pushing this crap on you, in,” Jawhari yelled to the students. “They don’t care about you. You put them out of business.” Sophomore Summer Aaron said the presentation was sad, but put things in perspective. “It gives you a dose of reality that just really hits you,” Aaron said. “I didn’t know how much (drugs) could really consume you.” Wiegand told students that as important as it is to say “no” to drugs right from the start, it is also important to say “yes” to help when a problem arises. “It took a long time to get where I am right now,” Wiegand said of his recovery. “(Briona and her mom) were casually using having a good time on the weekend, but the casual party scene is where I bury young people. There is no such thing as using casually, and if you do, I fear I will see you soon someday.” Stunned into silence as the speakers and those affected by drugs gathered around a coffin, Davison High School Principal Martha Morris took to the stage to leave her students with a list of challenges for the future. “I challenge you to make the right choices and I challenge you to help your friends make the right choices,” Morris said. “I challenge you to make sure we don’t have any funerals amongst our Davison family.” Thursday, May 19, 2011

Buckham Gallery hosts Flint City Theatre’s MacBeth FLINT — Buckham Gallery hosts Flint City Theatre’s production of William Shakespeare's MacBeth, or The Scottish Play. MacBeth, one of the bard's great (and murderous) tragedies, explores themes of power, ambition, deception, treachery and fate. Performances will take place 8 p.m. Thursday - Saturday, May 19-21 and Friday-Saturday, May 26-28 at the gallery, 134 W. Second St. in Flint. The performance is part of Buckham Gallery's May exhibition, In The Round. Artists explore the world of Shakespeare where power, lust, betrayal, vengeance and magic come together. Through the intricate pairing of live performance and art installation, In the Round brings one of Shakespeare's most haunting visions to life. The exhibit will feature artist members Todd Onweller and Amanda N. Simons of Flint, who will be creating the sweeping art installation that will provide the background for Flint City Theatre’s performances of MacBeth. In The Round will remain on display
until June 4. Regular hours at the gallery are noon to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays - Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission cost to visit the gallery, but donations are encouraged. Buckham Gallery is an artist-run, not-for-profit exhibition and performance space. The gallery was established in 1984 as a center for innovative and diverse contemporary visual and performance art for Flint and surrounding areas. The artist-member volunteers who run the gallery are eager to exhibit artists from as many diverse locations as possible. Richfield voters went to the polls in 2001 to decide fire millage 10 YEARS AGO May 23, 2001 • Richfield Township voters will be heading to the polls for a special election in July in a proactive move by officials. On May 8 the Board of Trustees scheduled a July 17 special election for voters to decide whether to continue the millage for fire protection services to township residents. Supervisor Jim Jacques said the township currently provides fire protection services through the Davison-Richfield Area Fire Authority, sharing expenses with Davison Township and the City of Davison. For the last 20 years the cost of these services have been paid for through a millage of 0.5 mills, authorized by the electors of Richfield Township. • The Davison Board of Education named Eric Lieske as the replacement for Dick Weaver as assistant principal at Hahn Intermediate School, May 7. Lieske, a Davison native, has been teaching in the district for four years and is currently teaching fifth grade at Hahn. 25 YEARS AGO May 21, 1986 • Residents and property owners in the City of Davison will likely be paying more in the form of property taxes next year and still may see certain services cut. City officials are currently in the process of putting together the municipality’s 1986-87 budget. By law that budget must be approved at the council’s first meeting in June, which will be June 1. City officials say a tax increase is inevitable. The city currently levies 11.72 mills which generates $519,367 in revenue. The city can, however, levy 12 mills without a vote of the people. This would generate additional revenue to the tune of about $11,000. But according to the preliminary budget, it will take $162,652 to balance the budget for 1986-87. • Heading into this final week of regular season action, the Davison High
School varsity baseball team sat atop the Big Nine standings and had its eye on another championship. The Cardinals maintained the league lead and hopes of a championship by sweeping a twin bill from Swartz Creek last Thursday by scores of 10-9 and 10-0. 50 YEARS AGO May 25, 1961 • A Flint man who led Davison police on a wild midnight chase at speeds up to 110 miles per hour escaped with only minor injuries Sunday night when his car went out of control, flipped end over end and then rolled several times. Davison officers had stopped at Pat’s Mobil Service at Belsay Road and M-21 (Davison Road) to investigate a checkpassing complaint when they spotted the driver as he sped east shortly after midnight. Officers gave chase with flashers and siren in operation but the driver kept going, running through the red light at M-21 and M-15 where he was clocked at 110 miles per hour. The driver lost control at the first curve at Potter Lake and M-21 and wrecked the car. The driver had been drinking and was taken to the Lapeer Hospital for treatment before being moved to the Genesee County Jail. 100 YEARS AGO May 19, 1911 • A special meeting of the Village Council Tuesday evening was attended by a crowd of interested citizens who were anixous to hear the outcome of the liquor question in Davison. At a regular meeting a week ago a petition signed by 77 voters was presented asking that the ordinance passed in 1897 prohibiting saloons in Davison, which appears to have never been repealed, remain not repealed at this time. The ordinance was repealed and a new ordinance was passed allowing one bar in the hotel and the council also granted Arthur P. Smith’s request for a license. — Compiled by Gary Gould

This based-on-a-true-story film begins with surfer girl Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) sketching out the details of her life in a voice-over. She lives in Hawaii, has a loving family and wants nothing more than to be a pro surfer. But the Hamiltons' lives are shaken when a 14-foot tiger shark bites off Bethany's arm during a morning surf. She loses 60 percent of her blood but survives. Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid turn in moving performances as the parents. The movie owns its PG rating, not to mention its Christian themes, proudly. LISA PAINE 810-452-2626 • LPAINE@MIHOMEPAPER.COM FLUSHING — Monday’s meeting with Flushing had great significance for the Davison baseball team. A sweep would put the team alone at the top of the Big Nine standings, as the Cardinals entered the matchups at 6-2 league and the Raiders at 7-1. Get out the broom, because the Cardinals are sweeping off the top rung of the ladder after defeating the Raiders, 3-1, and 10-3. One more sure foot can be planted on the platform at the top next Monday when Davison has to take care of business against Carman-Ainsworth to secure the title outright. If the Cards can earn another sweep, the title is theirs. Going back to the current Monday, Mike Dolloff went the distance, fanning 12 in a two-hitter that included a home run in the first inning. The other hit came in the fourth.
The Davison INDEX
"Mike threw a fine ball game," said Davison coach Timm Rye. "We only had three hits ourselves so we took advantage of our opportunities. We scored one in first to tie the game after their home run, and scored two in the fifth and that was the game." At the plate, Maverick Prine had one hit and one RBI, Joe Shannon had one hit and one RBI and Josh Gray had a hit. In the nightcap, Prine pitched four innings and Cody Wangler got the save in three innings of work. Rye said each had three strikeouts with Prine giving up two hits and Wangler, three. Davison, 8-2 Big Nine, had six hits and the 10 runs, with key hits coming from Tyler Ramoie who had two hits and a RBI. Singles were hit by Dolloff, Shannon, and Prine, who had three RBI. Cam Hogg also had one hit and one RBI. Tomorrow features a road trip to take on St. Clair, but all thoughts are on Monday’s clash with Carman-Ainsworth. Thursday, May 19, 2011

Jacob jumped a career best 21' 7". Jacob leads off both our 800m relay, which broke the school record on Friday, and 1600m relay. Jacob qualified for the state meet last year in the long jump and 1600m relay and hope to end his high school career with a trip to the podium at the state meet.” Senior Travis Toye and junior Gerald Henderson have also proved key to the cause this year for the Davsion track team, a fact of life that’s especially heartwarming considering the boys didn’t weren’t represented at last years state meet. “Travis is our team leader both on and off the track. He anchors both the 3200m relay and 1600m relay, which we have high expectations for those relays at the regional meet. The race he has focused on is the 800m where he placed 13th at the state meet last year running a 1:56. Travis hopes to improve on that this post season,” Crongeyer said. “Gerald has been a complete surprise this season. He ran last year for the first time, worked hard during cross country and the
winter, and is now one of our top runners. Gerald has split a 52 in the 400 and a 2:01 in the 800. Gerald has gone from a kid on the team to a leader on the team. He is our number two runner on both the 3200m and 1600m relays. Something else to look for from the Cardinals is their 800 relay squad of Jacobs, Matt Dolloff, Toye, and Bonk, who set a new school record of 1:31.8 on May 13 at the Davison Twilight Classic. The old record was 1:32.0 and had been in place since 1965.

Cardinals third in Jackson golf BY DAN NILSEN 810-452-2655 • DNILSEN@MIHOMEPAPER.COM JACKSON — Davison carved out another high finish in a tough golf tournament last Friday, but more importantly, the Cardinals grew closer to solidifying their lineup as the state tournament draws near. Davison placed third in the Bob Urschalitz Memorial Invitational hosted by Jackson Lumen Christi at The Cascades. The Div. 1 third-ranked Cardinals shot 310 to finish six strokes behind No. 11 North Farmington and four behind the host Titans, who are ranked third in Div. 3. Top-ranked Div. 1 Detroit Catholic Central was two strokes behind Davison at 312, and Grosse Ile was fifth at 315. Perhaps bigger than the team finish was seeing David Thompson lead the Cardinals with a 76, which tied him for eighth place individually, and senior Cody Minto follow right behind with a 77. The two have been playing the Nos. 4 and 5 spots for Davison most of the season. “David Thompson continues to combine fine shot-making with solid decisions on the course,” said Cardinals’ coach Michael Leffler. “If he can continue this process, the team’s chances of winning the state title are vastly improved.” Minto has pulled out of an early season slump to play the best golf of his four-year career. He also had a top-10 finish at the Genesee County Invitational. “Cody has been making better decisions than anyone on the team in the past few tournaments,” said Leffler. “Combined with his excellent swing, this bodes well for both his and the team’s future.” No. 1 Jake Thompson also carded 77, Kyle Kenkel shot 80 and No. 2 Zac Brammer battled a cranky driver all day to shoot 81. The tournament was played on a tough layout with narrow fairways

lined by 100-year-old trees. With five solid golfers, the Cardinals appear ready for the postseason, which begins June 3 in a district at Bay City Country Club. “The talent is there for a deep run in the state tournament,” said Leffler. “Decision-making is still an issue, and that goes hand-in-hand with debating risk versus reward on difficult holes. If they can come together on decisionmaking, they will be strong contenders at the state finals. If they make the wrong decisions, the season could end at the regionals.” Davison continued to rule the Big Nine Conference on Monday, winning a jamboree at Davison Country Club. Jake and David Thompson matched 3-overpar 40s as the Cardinals totaled 164 to beat Flushing by 17 strokes. Powers Catholic shot 182 and CarmanAinsworth 204. Travis Mochty added 41, Minto shot 43, Kenkel 46 and John Tallieu 51 for Davison.
