Tim Horton’s owner remembered BY GARY GOULD 810-452-2650 • GGOULD@MIHOMEPAPER.COM

DAVISON — David Anderson, 48, owner of the Tim Horton’s stores in Davison, Lapeer, Lake Orion and Oxford, died July 9 after suffering a massive heart attack. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Allen Funeral Home. Anderson leaves behind a wife, Debi, and daughter, Victoria. Mike Minto, golf professional/general manager of the Davison Country Club, said Anderson’s death is a great loss to the community, as well as to friends and family. “That’s a tough loss. He was very involved in the community,” said Minto, a longtime friend of Anderson’s. “He was more than willing to donate the time and effort to anything in the community he was behind.” Minto said Anderson, who is a past

“It’s a tremendous loss to the community” president of the Davison Country Club, would always donate coffee and Timbits donuts from his Davison Tim Horton’s to events in the community like Relay for Life and the Parcel for the Park run/walk. Lifelong friend Mike Salay said Anderson was like a brother to him and the two had been best friends since they were both in the fourth grade at Gates Elementary School in Davison. “(Anderson) was in trouble in the hallway one day. He was the new kid so I asked him where he lived and found out he was right across the street from me,” said Salay, who manages the Lapeer Tim Horton’s. “We always had each other’s back, no matter what.” Salay said Anderson had been sick the past week since returning from a Tim Horton’s convention in

Florida. He went to have blood work done at Genesys Health Park on Friday and suffered a massive heart attack there. He died the next day, surrounded by his family. “It’s a tremendous loss to the community,” said Salay. “He was one of the pillars of the community.” Anderson was born in Flint on Feb. 23, 1963, the son of Gary and Patricia (Daugherty) Anderson. He married Debra Cameron on Oct. 19, 1985. Anderson is also survived by aunts and uncles, Eugene Anderson and wife, James Daugherty and wife, Claudia Daugherty; sadly missed by, ‘Clan Cameron’; and many nieces, nephews. He was a 1981 graduate of Davison High School and went to Eastern Michigan University where he was a member of the Theta Chi

fraternity Burial was in Davison Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Friends and family said Anderson lived life to the fullest and enjoyed golfing and boating. “He made the most out of what he was given in life,” said Salay. “And he had no regrets in life. He wouldn’t have changed anything about his life, I know that for a fact.”

Davison dog park hits snag Electrical issues delay opening until September BY GARY GOULD 810-4252-2650 • GGOULD@MIHOMEPAPER.COM

DAVISON TWP. — The Davison Dog Park sits mostly built, waiting for pets and their owners to make use of the facility off Gale Road, but there’s just one catch — there’s no power. Davison Township Supervisor Kurt Soper said a hold-up with Consumers Energy to bring power to the park is all that remains to do. That connection may not happen until sometime in August, he added. “We have no definite date,” said Soper. “Even though Consumers (Energy) is expediting to bring service there, The Davison INDEX

they are behind. I’m not blaming them, but it’s going to be in August, the earliest.” Supporters of the dog park, located on Gale Road, west of the Riegle Press building and Davison Airport on Gale Road, adjacent to the township’s Black Creek Trail, were hoping to pass out fliers at the July 20 Festival of Flags Parade announcing the grand opening, but have put that plan on hold. “Don't have a sure date for that yet, we’re waiting until the underground electrical and plumbing are in place,” said Denice Wagner, a resident who has spearheaded the Dog Park effort, in an e-mail earlier this week. “I think it would be safe to say September.” Wagner and the Davison Environmental Team have been the driving force behind the movement to build the dog park. They have raised more than half of the money needed for the project — which will involve no taxpayer money. Details: Call 810-348-0113. 3

She then added massage services and an esthetician, making Allure a full-service salon and day spa. “We re-did the entire place,” she said. “We remodeled it and it looks completely different.” Minto said the staff at Allure consists of nine hair stylists, three nail techs and two masseuses. The change in service also comes with what Minto says is a warmer, friendlier atmosphere. “My mission is to make everyone feel welcome here,” she said. “I typically try to greet everyone who walks in. Before I just came to work and left at the end of the day, but now I’m starting to get to know a lot of the clients on a more personal level.”

Minto said in the six months since she took over the salon, she has seen the number of clients increase. “There are lots of new customers,” she said. “You can definitely see the growth with just the number of walkins and referrals.” To help further that growth, Minto said Allure Salon is offering a couple of specials for customers to take advantage of this month. One is a $20 shellac special and the other is $40 for a one hour massage or facial. Along with the growth, Minto said she is also trying to increase the salon’s visibility in the community. She recently joined the Davison Chamber of Commerce and plans to be involved in the Festival of Flags coming up next week. Minto said she is proud of her hardworking staff and is equally thankful for her husband, Kurt Minto II, who has helped her with almost every aspect of refurbishing the salon. “He’s my biggest supporter,” she said. “And he’s been a tremendous help.” The salon is open Tuesday-Thursday

There are still good people left in the world I felt compelled to write this letter today to let the people of Davison know there are good people still left in this world. As I was leaving VG’s this afternoon, I headed for my car only to find two women writing notes on a paper against my car. I asked them if there was a problem and they said, “we just saw someone hit your car and they kept going, but we got the license plate number!” I couldn't believe it. These two kind ladies, went out of their way to get as much information about the vehicle that hit my car and told me exactly what they had seen. To top it off, they both gave me their contact information just in case I might need it in the future. I just wanted to again say a big ‘thank you’ to them and to all those folks that “do the right thing.” One more reason for me to say, “I am proud to live in Davison” and the people that reside here are “top notch!” — Leigh LaForest, Davison

In Brief Davison High School Class of 2001 planning reunion DAVISON — The 10-year reunion plans for Davison High School's Class of 2001 are under way and the committee is in need of help contacting alumni. They are requesting updated physical and e-mail addresses from everyone so invitations go out without a hitch. There is also a Facebook request out in hope of spreading the word, which has worked pretty well so far. They are asking each alum to e-mail information to Davison2001@gmail.com and for married women to include both maiden and married names. They are also encouraging all of those on Facebook to “like” the page: DHS Class of 2001. They are using the page to reconnect with old friends, share in accomplishments, promote small businesses run by alum, and more. The 10 year celebration will take place over the DHS Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 1. — G.G.

Catholic Heart workcamp coming July 17-21 DAVISON — Teens from all over the country are participating in the weeklong Catholic HEART Workcamp in Davison from July 17-21. They will work on projects such as painting, general home repairs, cleaning, landscaping, and interacting with children at local daycare centers in low-income communities. They will also be involved in food distribution, homeless shelters, and outreach centers. The HEART Workcamp started 18 years ago in Florida with 100 campers under the direction of Steve and Lisa Walker. Since 1993, the program has grown to include more than 10,000 campers in 42 cities across the country and Jamaica and Mexico. The goal of Heart Workcamp is two-fold. Hearing loss is a serious issue “Loss of hearing is a medical condition that is associated with physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Depression, anxiety, emotional instability, phobias, withdrawal, isolation, lessened health status and lessened self-esteem have all been linked to uncorrected hearing loss.” (National Council on Aging: Untreated Hearing Loss Linked to Depression, Anxiety, Isolation in Seniors) Even mild untreated hearing loss can be disabling by limiting meaningful communication and social connectivity leading to fatigue, tension, stress, and impaired memory, the ability to learn new tasks, and even reduced job performance and earning power. A major reason why millions of Americans living with untreated hearing loss should take action is safety. Studies have linked untreated hearing loss to reduced alertness. Unheard and therefore unheeded traffic sounds, doorbells, telephones, alarms, and cries for help compromise the safety of those with hearing loss and everyone around them. The failure to hear smoke detectors and take quick action is the major reason adults 65 or older are more than twice as likely as any other age group to die in a home fire.

Why seeking help is so important Those living with untreated hearing loss may not be aware that failure to take corrective action could result in the brain actually “forgetting” how to hear and understand speech. This condition is called auditory deprivation and the longer the period before treatment, the more likely it is that the brain will forget how to process speech, even after treatment is implemented. Almost all (95 percent) of Americans with hearing loss can be treated with hearing aids. Nine out of ten hearing aid users report improvements in quality of life. The use of hearing aids is associated with reductions in anger, frustration, paranoia, anxiety and overall improvements in quality of life and emotional stability.

In November 2010, The Better Hearing Institute reported studies have shown that the use of hearing aids can help Alzheimer’s patients. Because there is a strong link between hearing loss and cognitive function, they, in partnership with Alzheimer’s Association, are encouraging hearing health professionals to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s, its early warning signs, and the related implications of unaddressed hearing loss. Treatment of hearing loss will improve interpersonal relationships and social activity. Successful treatment of hearing loss with hearing aids is associated with greater earning power. Use of hearing aids will allow those with hearing loss to live more safely, securely, and independently. HearUSA, with 29 locations in MI and over 175 in the US, is the administrator of the AARP Hearing Care program, designed to help millions of Americans aged 50+ who have hearing loss. To locate the HearUSA near you, or to schedule an appointment, please call 1800-698-6767 or go to www.hearusa.com.

Little known facts about hearing loss • Hearing loss is called ‘the invisible handicap’ because there are no outward signs of difficulty or disorder and the loss is almost always gradual, usually over a period of years, and there is no pain. • Among seniors, hearing loss is the third most prevalent medical condition, following arthritis and hypertension. • People with diabetes are twice as likely to have hearing loss than those who do not have diabetes. • Smokers and overweight individuals are also at increased risk for hearing loss. • Inability to hear and understand instructions by physicians, pharmacists or caregivers can put personal health in jeopardy. • Men that regularly use aspirin, acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs experience more hearing loss. • Also, men that take phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors are twice as likely to develop hearing loss as men who do not. • Depression, isolation and alienation can plague those who have hearing loss. Keep your teeth healthy with proper diet and cleaning Question: What are tips for better dental health?

foods, such as cheese, raw vegetables, plain yogur t, or a piece of fruit.

Answer: 1. To get a balanced diet eat a variety of foods. Choose foods from each of the five major food groups: • breads, cereals, amd other grain products • fruits • vegetables • meat, poultr y and fish • milk, cheese and yogur t

4. Foods that are eaten as par t of a meal cause less harm. More saliva is released during a meal, which helps wash foods from the mouth and helps lessen the effects of acids.

2. Limit the number of snacks that you eat. Each time you eat food that contains sugars, the teeth are attacked by acids for 20 minutes or more. 3. If you do snack, choose nutritious

5. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste that has the American Dental Association Seal of acceptance. 6. Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental cleaners. 7. Visit your dentist regularly. Your dentist can help prevent problems from occurring and catch those that do occur while they are easy to treat.

Local teens to perform during Festival of Flags BY JACOB HUNSANGER 810-452-2609 • JHUNSANGER@MIHOMEPAPER.COM

DAVISON — Third Degree Burns is not your average student band. Comprised of more than 20 students from the Lapeer and Genesee county area, Third Degree Burns will rock out at the Davison Festival of Flags. The group will perform July 23 from 4-5 p.m. following the Strongman competition on Main Street. The student band’s set list features favorite rock hits like “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar, “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses. But Third Degree Burns does not sound like a karaoke concert or even the average garage band. Allyson Jackson, a two-year member in the band, belted out Pat Benatar songs better than most professional singers. Brian Jenkins, a one-year band member, casually performed the fast-paced, intricate guitar solo at the beginning of Poison’s song “What I Like About You” without missing a single note. Founded and led by Lapeer resident Gary Burns, students in the program learn how to play music along with everything else that goes with being in a band and

putting on a concert. They learn about stage presence, how to banter and play to the audience, how to set up and take down all the technical equipment and amplifiers. They even learn about advertising and promoting a show. It is all part of a dream Burns has for the students and the musical future of Lapeer. Earlier this year, Burns received non-profit 501(c) classification for the Young Musicians Community, which is currently used to sponsor and fund the Third Degree Burns student band. Burns takes students, any young person who wants to play, and allows them to join the absolutely free program. “I can get anyone to play in two months,” said Burns. He is not bluffing either. Several band members who performed at the PIX Theatre on Thursday have only been playing an instrument for two months, even though they look like they have had years of lessons. Students in the program meet regularly

Gala parade kicked off Davison Homecoming in 1961 10 YEARS AGO July 18, 2001 • With the passing of Ed Minto, the Davison community has lost another of the original members of the Minto Bros. Construction. Minto died July 12, 2001. He was born in Flint March 1, 1924, to Thomas and Clara (Bethke) Minto. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Howarth. After returning to Davison he and three of his brothers began the construction company and built the Davison Country Club. • Her arrival was by a white limousine, to a crowd of cheering friends and former students lining the red carpet who were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the retiring teacher. Sally Bird greeted each and every person who had come to celebrate her retirement after 40 years of teaching, mostly in the Davison Community Schools. 25 YEARS AGO July 16, 1986 • James Dowsett has been re-elected as president of the Davison Board of Education. The board held its annual organizational meeting Monday night and Dowsett was re-elected unanimously to the post. Also re-elected were Susan Fulcher as secretary, Dennis Murphy as vice president and Larry Norfleet as treasurer. • Davison Community School’s new child care latchkey program has been named “The Cardinal’s Nest.” Pam Cereska submitted the winning entry in a contest held to determine the name of the new program in Davison. She was awarded a free enrichment class through the Community Education Department, which sponsored the contest.

SCENE BURNS from page 16 to practice and rehearse, performing regular concerts in the area. Gary Burns also presented two students with the annual Danielle Shipley Scholarship Awards during Thursday’s concert. Danielle Shipley was a student in the Third Degree Burns band before a fatal car crash in 2009. Burns established a scholarship in her name for graduating seniors for the Most Improved Performer and Most Accomplished Performer. This year’s Most Improved Award went to Trevor Harnden, a bass guitarist and keyboard player who has been in the band since 2007. The Most Accomplished Award went to Cheryse Burns, who performs lead vocals, backup vocals and plays the keyboard. Third Degree Burns started in Burns’ basement six years ago. In that time, said Burns, more than 100 students have gone through the program. Where other student band programs are costly and can provide varied results, Burns makes sure the program remains free to all of his students. He only requires that his students maintain good grades in school, be willing to work hard, and stay away from drinking, smoking and drugs. Third Degree Burns is just getting warmed up though. Burns has a vision

for the program that could very well make Lapeer the new musical center of the state. His vision is to raise enough funds for the creation of a two story building here in Lapeer, complete with a concert hall, recording studio and classrooms. “If I can get two million people to know about it and send me one dollar, we’ll be all set. We can do it,” said Burns. He wants to expand the program to encompass everything related to music. He is looking for professionals to teach students in the program not just how to play music, but how to run the sound board and lights, how to do photography, advertising and managing. While Detroit was once a major musical hub during the Motown era, Burns believes that Lapeer has all the potential of being the next musical hot spot in the state or even the nation. He said that Lapeer not only has an abundance of young talent, it is also situated right in the middle of Detroit, Flint, Saginaw and Port Huron. That locale makes Lapeer the perfect spot to draw in young musicians from all over. Already, Third Degree Burns has students from Davison, Lapeer, Imlay City, North Branch, Dryden, Almont, Oxford and Novi. Details: Go to www.ymc.vpweb.com.

Welcome Baby Grant!

Dr. Michael & Bethany Nanzer

of Clarkston, Michigan would like to announce the arrival of Grant Michael Nanzer. Grant was born at 5:40 P.M. on May 23, 2011 at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. At birth weighed 10 pounds, and measured 22 3/4 inches. Grandparents are Gordon & Jackie Canamore of Davison, Patricia Nanzer of Grand Rapids and Bruce Nanzer of East Grand Rapids. Great-Grandparents are Marie Canamore of Burton and Robert Flannery of Grand Rapids.

Social Security Many people are wrongly rejected when they apply for Social Security Disability benefits. Money was taken out of their paychecks for Social Security taxes to ensure that they would receive disability benefits if they could no longer work full-time. Sadly, the government denies approximately 60% of those who apply for disability benefits. Attorneys J.B. Bieske and Jennifer Alfonsi have 42 years combined experience representing only Social Security disability clients. And they personally meet with all clients and appear themself at all court hearings. Many large firms assign inexperienced attorneys to your case. And some of these firms are located thousands of miles away and only fly the attorney in the day of the court hearing. Attorneys Bieske and Alfonsi have vast experience before local Michigan judges. Attorneys Bieske and Alfonsi can often make a winning difference at the application stage. And, if an appeal is necessary they have won several hundred cases before a court date is even set. Those denied can appeal on their own but statistics for many years reveal that those represented by attorneys win a much higher percentage of appeals. And attorneys who specialize in Social Security Disability cases win a much higher percentage yet. In addition to practicing only Social Security disability law attorney Bieske has written a book for attorneys about the subject and has been interviewed on various television programs. Both attorney Bieske and Alfonsi have also been interviewed on radio programs and have given speeches to many groups. Attorneys Bieske and Alfonsi offer free phone or office consultation. If they represent you, there will be no fee charged until after the case is won. The fee is a percentage of retroactive benefits. Bieske and Alfonsi represent clients from all over the state of Michigan. They have appeared numerous times before virtually all of the judges in the state. Call them at 1-800-331-3530 for a free consultation if you have been denied, or if you are thinking of possibly applying for Social Security benefits.

Sports High school hockey continues to struggle BY BRANDON POPE 810-452-2651 • BPOPE@MIHOMEPAPER.COM AREAWIDE— When the puck drops on the upcoming high school hockey season, some of the area programs will look significantly different compared to last year. Within the general area, there are three program changes that have taken place this off-season. Clio and LakeVille put an end to their co-op agreement, leaving the two schools searching for another program to combine with. Clio has reached an agreement to form a co-op with Swartz Creek, while LakeVille plans to join forces with both Dryden and North Branch, schools that have never had high school hockey. The team wil skate as the LakeVille Falcons as an independent out of the Polar Palace in Lapeer. However, the biggest shakeup came in the city of Lapeer. East and West high schools have been bitter rivals for decades, but will now become teammates on the ice. Although West has no shortage of participants, East has been struggling in the numbers game in recent years. As part of budget cuts, Lapeer Community Schools announced that it could only fund one hockey program, resulting in East and West maintaining one squad with Lapeer West athletic director Mary Haslinger acting as the primary. Lapeer East will retain some supervisory responsibilities. Interest in hockey has been on a decline for years now, preventing several area schools from continuing with their programs. In the Flint Metro League, Fenton and Brandon remain as the only two standalone programs. Davison’s Big Nine rival, Flushing, skates as a co-op with

Carman-Ainsworth, while Flint Powers has steady numbers to skate as a standalone program. “Well, I think its unfortunate that the schools can’t survive with their own teams, but they have a battle going on for the hockey talent,” said Davison hockey statistician Larry Botti. “If you have to combine programs to be more competitive then it’s only going to make better quality hockey.” Even a program as strong as Davison can have occasional slips in numbers. On a team that usually draws 20-30 players in an average season, they were only able to start last season with 16 players. According to the new MHSAA rules, a full roster consists of 22. “The numbers also depend on how many we graduate each year,” said Botti. “Last year, we lost 10 seniors, so we had to pick 10 new players.” Heading into the 2011-12 season, the Cardinals will be forced to replace eight seniors. The numbers are not the only problem concerning most hockey programs. Hockey has always been an expensive sport, and costs continue to increase. With the economy in shambles, schools are not as willing to foot the bill as they used to. “(Davison) took a bit of a hit (financially). Part of the money that it raised for the hockey program in past years was at the hospitality tent at the Buick Open. So, no Buick Open, no money,” said Botti. “It costs $250 an hour for ice time. Bee swarm showcases nature at its best LISA PAINE 810-452-2626 • LPAINE@MIHOMEPAPER.COM LAPEER — The Lapeer County Master Gardeners pride themselves on offering not just a pretty place to visit with the Display Gardens on Suncrest, but also in educating the public. On Sunday, the group had an unexpected chance to educate, as a fairly new educational bee hive at the gardens placed by Mej’s Mystical Meadows of North Branch in May became overpopulated and the bees did what they do naturally, swarming into a nearby tree. The nearby pavilion was filled with several hundred guests partaking of the group’s annual Tea Thyme in the Garden fundraising tea when the swarm was noticed. Master Gardener and member of the Seven Ponds Beekeepers group, Jane Schade, knew what to do and called Terry Tolland, President of Seven Ponds BeeKeepers. Tolland suited up in appropriate beekeeping garb and calmly climbed several ladders and collected the swarm that will now take up residence in the vacant observation hive inside Seven Ponds. The hive’s bees had died off because of the long

This swarm of bees was moved to a vacant observation hive at Seven Ponds after its last residents died becasue of the long, harsh winter.

and harsh winter. Schade explained that she knew the bees were not an immediate danger to anyone and noted that with the Suncrest Medical Facility literally steps away and with several Epi-pens available in an emergency, no one was in danger. "A combination of factors made the bees swarm," Schade said. "The hive is in such a perfect place with all the

plants, and it built up so fast since it was put in in May. About six pounds of bees were taken out carefully by Tolland." "When they swarm, they are not dangerous because they are so focused on building a new home, full of honey to sustain themselves, and they follow the queen wherever she is going," Schade added. Tolland explained the swarming process.

"The biggest thing is that it’s a natural part of their cycle and how more bees get into the world. When overcrowded in hives, bees make a new queen and half the bees leave with the queen to forge a new home. The queen can lay 2,000-3,000 eggs per day this time of year." Tolland added that he collected about 8,00010,000 bees in the swarm, a little bigger than a bas-

ketball. "Bees are the most docile at that time because they have no home or food to protect, no young to protect and they are out scouting in the cluster looking for a new home. I got lucky and was able to offer them someplace to relocate," Tolland said. As for their new home, Tolland noted that Mike Champaign, director at Seven Ponds, has an

observation hive inside the facility. "I will put this live swarm back into that observation hive," he said. "The club also has hives outside that we use as demonstration tools at our meeting. We open those up about an hour before the meetings to observe bee keeping first hand and help people get their feet wet." Most bees, Tolland noted, go back to their home hive at night with a few sentries keeping guard outside the hive. He noted that the hive at Suncrest is serving its purpose well, acting as a pollinator site, a small honey collection hive, and is making more bees in nature. It’s also likely not the first swarm to come out of that hive as he saw signs that other queens had been created and moved on with other bees. The Seven Ponds group meets the fourth Thursday of every month, from 6:309 p.m. and Tolland said the bees are on display in open hives. It’s an opendoor meeting and the public is always welcome. The Display Gardens on Suncrest are on the grounds of the Medical Care Facility on Suncrest Drive in Lapeer, between Oregon and Davis Lake roads.

Assisting Tolland on Sunday was Randy Puff, a Lapeer County Master Gardener.

President of Seven Ponds Beekeepers Terry Toland prepares this swarm for transport to their new home.

Festival of Flags

Davison loves their parades! One of the Davison Chamber of Commerce highlights of the year is the Festival of Flags Parade. People young and old come to downtown Davison every year to enjoy the Festival of Flags Parade. Spectators will start lining the streets an hour or more before the Parade begins in hopes to get that front row seat. The Festival of Flags

Parade has established quite a reputation as the Chamber promotes the Parade as being one of the largest Parades in Genesee County. The Davison Chamber of Commerce will be passing out over 3,000 American Flags (made in the USA) to the viewers as the Parade precedes south on Main Street and east on to Clark St.

The Davison Chamber of Commerce encourages everyone to wear their Red, White & Blue, bring their Flags to show their Davison Spirit and Patriotism to their Country. Spectators should bring lawn/bag chairs to make themselves comfortable to relax and enjoy all the exciting attractions that will be parading down Main Street this

year to entertain the crowds. The Festival of Flags Parade will kick off Wednesday, July 20th promptly at 6:00PM. Be ready to get on your feet to honor our Military Heroes as they lead the Parade carrying a our Nation’s Flags and many then the many others that will follow.

Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists Brings Strongman Competition to Davison In case you missed it last year, Davison Festival of Flags has a new and exciting event returning for the second straight year. You’ve seen it on ESPN; men pulling trucks, flipping enormous tires, loading heavy stones … well on Saturday, July 23, 2011, beginning at noon you will have an opportunity to see it up close and personal right here in Downtown Davison on Main Street. North American Strongman (nastrongman.com), the premier governing body for amateur strongman has sanctioned this incredible event. There will be several different classes of events including teens and Masters (40+); numerous weight categories for the men (LW under 200lbs, LW 201-231, HW 231.5-265, 265+); and a new Novice division for those who want to give strongman a try for the first time. The top 2 athletes from each division qualify for the NAS National Championships on November 4-5, held this year in Tunica, Mo. All events will be head-to-head to add excitement and drive to the competition. Currently there are five events slated for the competition. The circus dumbbell medley will test the athlete’s shoulder power. Competitors will race against one another to repeatedly lift circus dumbbells that continually increase in both size and weight. The next event is a carpull by which competitors will race against each other and the clock pulling a car, truck, or tractor depending on their weight class. Now that the athletes are thoroughly warmed up, they’ll have to lift the rear end of an automobile in the car squat competition. They’ll have 60 seconds to lift the apparatus as many times as possible. The next event is the yoke/barrel medley. A MAMMOTH yoke of over 750 pounds is carried up the street and

then the competitor brings back a sloshing 55 gallon plastic drum of water, all while racing against a fellow competitor and the clock. The final event, and a favorite of many, is the Strongman Signature Atlas Stones. Five round boulders weighing from 250-350 pounds will be lifted and placed on a platform. Each boulder weight increases as the event

goes on. Who will answer this challenge? For more information or to enter, log onto www.mistrongman.com and click on “Upcoming Events.” All events are a must see and promise to bring excitement to the whole family. Admission is free and donations will be accepted with proceeds going to Outreach East, a local charity.

There will be bleacher seating as well as a concession stand will be available. We encourage all to bring lawn chairs a well. Please remember to come out and support the strong men and women competing as well as support all events during the Festival of Flags. It promises to be a wonderful family event.

Ready. Set. Eat. Repeat The second annual pizza eating contest is moving to Downtown Davison courtesy of the Pizza Company. The contest will begin at 3 p.m. underneath a tent at Second Street between the ally and Main Street on Saturday July 23rd. Registration is limited to the first fifty contestants to register. Registration is available at the Pizza Company located at 8435 Davison Rd. Cost is $5 and all proceeds will benefit the Genesee County Humane Society. There will be a $150 first place prize, a $50 second place prize and a $25 third place prize. Each contestant will be given two large pizzas. The first person to finish or the person who eats the most within twenty minutes will determine the top three posi-

tions. “We have very exact scales that can help us if there is a close race” noted owner Luke Bailey. All participants will be allowed to take home their remaining pizza as a momento or a late night snack. Bailey is excited about moving the event downtown which joins the kid’s bike parade and the strongman competition in Downtown Davison. “I think the exposure downtown will be great for the contestants and the crowd,” said Bailey. The tent, tables and chairs are being provided by chamber members Got You Covered. Co-sponsoring the event is Tom Crane from Edward Jones For further information please contact Mike at 810-452-2649.

Bacon wrapped chicken 1 (5 1/2 pound) free-range chicken 1/2 bunch each fresh oregano, thyme, and parsley 1/4 pound unsalted butter, softened Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 orange, halved 1/2 head garlic 1 medium white onion, halved, plus 1 onion 6 strips smoked bacon Directions Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Rinse the chicken with cool water, inside and out. Pat it dry with paper towels. Divide the herbs, keeping 1/2 of them whole. Finely chop the other half. In a small bowl, mash the softened butter with the chopped herbs, until combined. Rub the herbed butter under the skin, as well as all over the outside of the chicken. Season the bird all over with salt and pepper. Stuff the cavity with the orange, garlic, 1 onion, and the remaining herbs. Tie the legs together with kitchen twine to help hold its shape. Place the chicken, breast-side up, in a roasting pan. Put the remaining onion into the pan, which will help color and flavor the sauce. Lay the strips of bacon across the breast of the chicken and roast for 25 minutes. Remove the bacon and baste the chicken with the drippings and cook for another 25 minutes to brown the skin. The chicken is done when an instantread thermometer reads 165 degrees F when inserted into the thickest part of the thigh (the legs of the chicken should wiggle easily from the sockets too.) Remove the chicken to a platter and let stand for 10 minutes, so the juices settle back into the meat before carving.
