TALLAHASSEE BOARD OF REALTORS

Coldwell Banker Hartung If you’re a senior, thinking about retirement can start the process of deciding to downsize, upsize, move to a senior community, or even relocate outside of your present town. There are many options, each depending on your wishes and lifestyle.

Is family your focus? You might need a home with an extra bedroom or a play area for grandchildren’s visits. If two or more generations are going to live together, accommodations may need to be made for separate living areas for yourself and the other family members.
Is traveling your dream? To make traveling easier, a property that takes care of itself is a good option. Look for a home that needs minimum maintenance and yard care. Townhomes or condos with homeowner associations are a good choice.
What if you thrive on social activities? Active adult or age-restricted communities may be just what you need for a happy retirement. These communities have full schedules of events, and may even provide transportation to activities such as symphonies, adult education, or day trips to other towns. Want to age in place? Sometimes packing up years of accumulations can be overwhelming. If you like your house (preferably one-story, for accessibility) and its proximity to shopping and doctors’ offices, then it is time to start making your home safer and more enjoyable as you age.
If you love entertaining, then you will need adequate space indoors and outside. If your present kitchen isn’t your dream kitchen, start replacing appliances that are older with energy efficient ones; install pull-out shelves on lower cabinets; replace an overhead microwave with a drawer or countertop microwave. Wall ovens are a great option if you have the space to accommodate one.
If you are still working, consider making an office out of that spare bedroom that is seldom used. This spare room could also be used for hobbies.
It can be overwhelming, but just take it one step at a time, and you will be prepared to enjoy your decision for years to come.
