PRIDE is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

Frankfurt, 2005. Ulli Winkler, the president of a large company, watches by chance a television program about an old German village in the Banat region, today abandoned. It is Lindenfeld, Ulli’s childhood village, where he was born and lived until 1945, when most of the members of the community, including his parents and his lover Helga, were deported to Soviet concentration camps. Is there any chance that Helga is still alive? The film is inspired by Ioan T. Morar’s novel “Lindenfeld”.

The adventure starts after a final night at Austin’s SXSW music festival, where the bands (Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bear’s Den) decide to head northeast. They play everywhere from bars to barns, rooms to rooftops, wowing crowds with their unique sounds. Heavy rainstorms, break-downs, and cramped conditions remind them that to push through sometimes you need to pull together. With Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett and narrated by Gill Landry.

Jason Priestley directs this entertaining road movie. Humor and tears come out of the interplay between a terminally ill doctor (RICHARD DREYFUSS) and a rambunctious 22year-old hitchhiker who imposes herself on him. It is ultimately a two-hander about a relationship that develops between a pair of needy people at two different phases in their lives who still have a lot to teach each other.

Edinburgh, late 19th century. Little Jack is born on a day so cold his heart froze. In her house on top of a big hill, the midwife, replaces the defective organ with a cuckoo-clock. It will work, she warns him, as long as Jack doesn’t touch the hands of the clock, doesn’t lose his temper and, above all, doesn’t fall in love. But Jack’s encounter with a fiery-eyed little girl singing on a street corner and his decision to chase after her across Europe to Andalusia tests the resistance of his makeshift heart to the breaking point.

Graffiti is one of the most misunderstood sub cultures in history. Up until now the story of T-Kid 170 has been kept within the sub culture of graffiti. Using nearly 30 years of archived footage and T-Kid’s never before seen home movies, is a very rare glimpse into the world of subway graffiti. Follow T-Kid into train yards all over the world and through his trials and tribulations, violence, love and triumphs. The story of one man’s rise to becoming a legend and witness someone who came from the bottom to write his name on the top. 38 s a n d i e g o f i lm f e st i v a l

Blind from birth, 24-yearold pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii’s handicap — if a drawback at all — never affected his ability to play the piano. Set against the backdrop of the world’s great piano masterpieces and Nobuyuki’s own uplifting compositions, this film is an inspiration to all people who face disabilities, severe challenges, or obstacles in life. Partly filmed during Japan’s 2011 tsunami and earthquake which killed 20,000 and displaced 100,000 people, Nobuyuki’s performances there gave hope to the affected people and attested to the power of music.

Director: Grant Knisely

On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater, usually in the next week. In 2014 over 50,000 filmmakers made almost 4,000 films in 120 cities on 6 continents around the world. Over the 11 years of 48 Hour Film Project over 19,000 films have been made by 278,000 people.

For over 9 years, education has been a key component of the San Diego Film Foundation and San Diego Film Festival – we’re pleased to introduce our newest program:

focus To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this commitment to young people, SDFF will launch FOCUS, a new range of ongoing programs to engage students and schools with dynamic film programs, teacher training, in-school workshops with artists, and collaborative residencies. FOCUS on Career • 500 students and teachers will be invited to the Festival itself for a daylong program. • Events will include a film screening followed by a Q&A with filmmakers as well as panels on multimedia skills including screenwriting, editing, acting, and crowdfunding. • Lunch will be provided and students will be encouraged to meet representatives from local colleges and universities with film or media departments. FOCUS on Film • Schools that participate in the Festival will be among the very first to be visited by FOCUS Teaching Artists for a social action workshop and film screening in their school or classroom. • Students will view a socially conscious short film or documentary and engage in a participatory workshop that will include a conversation with the filmmaker or artist. FOCUS on Learning • During the 2014-15 academic year, SDFF is committed to providing professional development workshops for local teachers and administrators. • Each workshop will explore methods of incorporating media and technology into classroom instruction, mindful of technical limitations, the needs of students, and the new Common Core Standards. FOCUS on Collaboration • Finally, select schools will participate in a multi-workshop residency with Teaching Artists. • Students will learn the basic tools of filmmaking – from pitching and screenwriting to post-production. • Collaborating with SDFF Staff, students will create socially conscious documentary or narrative short films about individuals or ideas that they see as relevant or unique to their community. FOCUS is seeking partner schools for its inaugural year, as well as sponsors and donors to support this ambitious, exceptional program. Please email blake@sdfilmfest.com for more information. 63
