churches of Borromini prominently surrounding the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon a bit Fragment of the 18th further to the east. Kat Hing Wai Kat Hing Wai is of an almost-square, symmetrical design of green brick, covering some 8,500 square meters, with four watchtowers posted at each corner and a surrounding moat. Small houses are attached to the walls and then fill the square in six neat rows.

LOHAS Living

1 商業中心將包括一個公共運輸交匯處以服務周邊社區、學校及 鄉村。

「樂活生活區」位於大欖郊野公園的附近,鄰接山坡及鄉村式居所,計劃提供中密度居住環境。並建 議善用區內的自然景觀,沿山邊興建觀景單車徑,及創造新的河道,蓄洪池及蘆葦床並保留天然河 溪,豐富元朗南的特色及促進城、鄉及自然共融,吸引居民及遊客。 Located near Tai Lam Country Park and surrounded by hill slopes and village settlements, the ‘LOHAS Living’ Planning Area is planned to be a medium-density living environment. Capitalising on natural landscape in the surroundings, a scenic cycle track, new watercourse, retention lake and reedbed are proposed. Besides, the natural stream would be preserved. These would enrich the character of Yuen Long South and promote urban, rural and nature integration, attracting both residents and visitors.

The commercial centre would include a PTI to serve the community, schools and villages.

The proposed Sewage Treatment Works would be provided and an area would be reserved for Government Depots (with green building design). The existing livestock farms located at the southern fringe area would be zoned “Agriculture” (the feasibility of this proposal will be subject to detailed assessment for compliance with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Ordinance in respect of the environmental mitigation measures and their feasibility of implementation).

HK CASE STUDY Some of the Hong Kong city plannings are also using the difussion planning methods, Sha Tin is one of the example, as its urban planning is mainly focusing on the New Town Plaza and the MTR station, the planning is spreaded out by surrounding the New Town Plaza. Another two examples are the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Hong Kong Disneyland. 44

Golden Ratio The golden ratio is a proportioning system that governs the relationship of smaller parts to the whole. It has long been believed to produce some of the most aesthetically pleasing shapes in nature, and such has been used in many works of art and architecture.

04 RIVER

KAI TAK NULLAH (HK) The existing Kai Tak Nullah is about 2.4 km in length. It flows from Po Kong Village Road along Choi Hung Road, pass Tung Tau Estate and San Po Kong, into Kai Tak Development Area before discharging into the Victoria Harbour. The nullah is one of the major flood relief drainage channels in East Kowloon area.

CHEONGGYE (KOREA) Creating an environment with clean water and natural habitats was the most significant achievement of the project.

The project attempted to promote the urban economy through amplifying urban infrastructure for a competitive city in the business and industrial area centered on the stream.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The design intention for the city of modularity is to use Focault’s concept of “Heterotopia” to describe the city, which describes a heterotopia as a space that disrupts the continuity and normality of common everyday places. Because they break down boundaries with and between places into spaces of ‘otherness’.

NEUTRAL TWO EXTREMES In the humanistic geography space and place are important concepts. The underlying theory for this way of thinking is the phenomenology, which tries to find the essential features of experiences in the direct and indirect experiences.

Place - A particular position, point, or area in space; a location. A building or area used for a specified purpose or activity (Oxford Dictionary)

'Place' is in contrary more than just a location and can be described as a location created by human experiences. The size of this location does not matter and is unlimited. It can be a city, neighborhood, a region or even a classroom at cetera. In fact 'place' exists of 'space' that is filled with meanings and objectives by human experiences in this particular space.

Space - 'A continuous area of expanse which is free, available, or unoccupied' (Oxford Dictionary)

'Space' can be described as a location which has no social connections for a human being. No value has been added to this space. According to Tuan (1977, p.164-165) it is an open space, but may marked off and defended against intruders (Tuan, 1977, p.4). It does not invite or encourage people to fill the space by being creative. No meaning has been described to it. It is more or less abstract (Tuan, 1997, p.6).

Architecture is not simply about space and form, but also about event, action and what happens in space. It relocates in contrary more than just a location and a location created by human experiences. According to Tschumi, the experience of a space is more than important than the drawings of a space; we should explore and experience to have a better understanding of the space. We always have a desire to see, to hear or to touch to understand the environment around us. Tschumi has always been interested in concept and experience. Take Parc de la Villette as example, designed and built over a period of 15 years, the cultural park supports different cultural and leisure activities based on cultural and activity rather than nature. In public eye, architecture is about comfort, about shelter, about bricks and mortar. Architecture is not necessarily about comfort, but is also about advancing society and its development. Deconstructive architecture celebrates life in spaces confined by materials. The general assumption of a house is that it is constructed of walls, floors, ceilings. Deconstructive architecture is concerned with in-between of those already established attachments of the house more than dealing with issues that have already been established.

The use of film images in these works originated in an interest in sequences and programmatic concerns.


We find it today in Hong Kong, a high-rise building consists with multiple programs scattered through different floor: MTR station, stores, museum, greens on roof, etc. The result comes from combinations, or due to the pressure of ever-rising land prices, non-causal relationships between form and function. Michel Foucault expanded the use of the term “event” in a manner that went beyond the single action or activity, and spoke of “events of thought”. (Tschumi, 1996) The event here is seen as a turning point, not an origin or an end, as opposed to such propositions as “form follows functions” in modernism. A new heterotopia is achieved by intensifying the rich collision of events and spaces, no more locating a fixed place, no more master plan by Focault’s concept. In 1991 at Columbia University Bernard Tschumi delivered a lecture titled “Six Concepts”, whereby he elaborates the truthfulness of the modernist architects in relation to use. Tschumi argues that modernists where preoccupied more with the appearance, driven by the rejection of ornaments whilst ignoring the function factor in a building. Modern style is focus on the presentation of modernity by appropriate material and machine technology. Classical architecture celebrated the craftsmanship; both of them have own aesthetic language visible throughout architecture of its time. Since the Renaissance, architectural theory has always distinguished between structure and ornament. “Ornament is meant to be additive; it must not challenge or weaken the structure. Deconstructive architecture is a tool that analyses a style and searches for ways to enrich it. It does not aim to create iconic building, but it creates memorable experiences in them. The reinterpretation of nature in Teikyo Heisei University Nakano Campus is achieved through a repeated squareshaped pattern. The scattering of black pavement covers both interior and exterior floors. The concept of this dispersion is to represent the sunshine filtering through foliage. PETER EISENMAN Eisenman’s work are mainly origins of deconstructivist. Above is an image of House X, I find it rather amusing that he name the house in numeric order instead of the actual owner, which probably describe his philosophy on architecture is a record of the process.

REFLECTION I am grateful for inspiring from Henri and clearing my mind. Every good design has only one main theme / concept. If It has two or more, it won;t be a good design because people don't understand it. I am thinking different aspects during the design process. That's why I should have a central theme / concept first.As long as I stay focus on placespace programming, or so-called heterotopia. I think my concept is pretty clear. Under the main theme, I can have many secondary concepts. Module boxes and growth are part of the realisation of the heterotopia, or more common term, placing making. Everyone is thinking of transition, but I am thinking of it in terms of placing making. They maybe concerned about tree / seasonal change, but I am thinking of place & space too. How place (6 levels of interaction) are changed due to the life pattern of the trees. "I already have excellent basic techniques, and it is time to further sharpen my design methodology. So that I can move to another level."

Research based design can help me learning more about classical works, every architecture has stuffs referenced from pervious onces. A new design may not come from 0 to 100 from nothing based on.

Henri always tells us "visual communication". That's true. Design panel tells, there are some keywords / diagrams to guide others when I am not going with verbal presentation. Besides, I use other subject's work to benefit studio project, e.g. design history reflection with Bernard Tschumi, although I don't really like this Parc De La Viltte architecture, I learn from his methodology - events & reference point. I can also apply plaster model in semester. But it goes into deeper region. For the invisible city, it should form in group instead of individual project due to limited time. For studio project, city of modularity, we formed in group of 9 students, be liked hand in a design proposal to government. Although we are separated into 4 groups of 2-3 people, it is too hard to come out well-developed design approach. Everyone has difference concepts. We may gain conflicts and always waiting for others' submission. I am quite upset that they stall for time.
