Where the river breaks around a bend, I observe my reflection being passed over by clouds and water and by a riffle of laughing children hurrying to the ocean before dark. We turn ourselves to stone listening somewhere like this unseen to our own thoughts. Never to be entirely ourselves in the vulnerable flesh we predators expose as bait, we let the clay harden on our bodies -- as potter, hung with happy hands, loves the clay that hardens on his arms. Fragments of our own skin dry and crack each time we move, and something in our bones longs for the prehistoric. We are made of mud and spittle, we who add straw to the mix and live inside adobes so that we might come to resemble those who broke loose from the cliffs, rolled and wore down until we became one with the walls that keep us warm.
