Introducing Courtney Azzara We are excited to offer a selection of works by Azzara, a uniquely talented artist now being represented by 203 Fine Art Courtney Azzara is an artist who was raised on Long Island, New York. She studied painting at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. It was there that she came in to her practice of using thread as a mark making medium in a minimal and abstract way. After receiving her BFA from Pratt in 2008 she remained in Brooklyn, working out of a studio in Bedford Stuyvesant and showing at a gallery space in Bushwick. In 2013 she was awarded an artist’s grant from the Vermont Studio Center for a month long residency in Johnson Vermont. Courtney currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

Understanding the Artist

“I’ve always been a very methodical and detail oriented person. I’m excited by the way the act of stitching is an unconventional entryway into the act of painting. I find it an interior way to meditate into a painting that instills a sense of time into the work. That time gives way the immediacy in the strokes of paint. In balancing these elements I aim to give the work it’s own breath and rhythm.” “Each medium is in a balancing act. The carefully measured mark of the silk thread lends time and relief to the otherwise brash and expressive painting. A pace is set by each instinctive act and the interplay between them. The repetitiously threaded lines reference a sense of quiet labor and to the tactility of time within the making of each mark. Oftentimes, it is these lines that attempt to restrain the outbursts of thickly applied oil paint.”
