INTRODUCTION Tom Dixon was born in 1947 in Butler, Pennsylvania, and raised primarily outside of Denver, Colorado. Dixon studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1969-1971. Since relocating to Taos in the late 70s, he has lived and worked in the same studio for the last 30 years. A painter’spainter, Dixon works and reworks his surfaces, laboring over the compositions with little distraction, except for his own thoughts. 203 Fine Art has represented Tom Dixon for over a decade, organizing several solo exhibitions of the artist’s work. He is an important part of the Taos art community and we enjoy providing the recognition he deserves. This exhibition features works created in 2019 and 2020. In these paintings, Dixon engages in a process of deconstruction and reconstruction. Using both additive and subtractive techniques, Dixon spontaneously reacts to his surfaces to find a balance of line, form and color.
In these new works, Dixon removes, scrapes away, and pares down the surfaces. The spareness of the canvases and abundance of white space exposes what has been taken away. He continually responds to the paintings in his studio until he uncovers the visual experience that he restlessly searches for. Underneath each completed painting exists a history of layers, and by using a mark-making language of erasure and insertion, he leaves just enough to allude to the complex surface underneath. Textured geometric grids and sweeping kinetic motions create compositions that hold lively tension. Just as Dixon works and reworks his compositions, the viewer is called to engage and re-engage with the paintings.
