JAMES BLAKE

In 2004, James Blake’s was coasting. A rising tennis superstar, with each passing year his game appeared to improve. In 2002, being named the Sexiest Male Athlete by People, he rose in the rankings to earn respect on the court. James was quickly achieving landmark success with his tennis career and was living an almost fairy tale life, until he broke his back, lost his father and to top it off contracted a rare virus, Zoster. James has since then in the last two years, fought back to write a best-selling book, attain superiority among the world tennis rankings and recently beginning his acting career with his cameo in NBC’s Lipstick Jungle. 203 had the opportunity to catch up James and discuss his recent battles and successes. So thanks for sitting with me James, tell me, how was your summer? Actually, my summer was very busy and I really haven’t stopped moving for two years. This year I had tournaments in Australia, Florida, Houston, and Italy. Wimbledon was in June, I played a tournament in Canada in July, plus, the US Open and Olympics were in August.

203lifestyle.com 13

James Blake How did beating Roger Federer in the Olympics feel? It felt great. It wasn’t in a small venue, it was at the Olympics and he is one of the greatest players of all time. So, whets new for James Blake? New, I‘m glad I finally have time off. I haven’t had much time off in awhile. Do you plan on coming out with another book? Yes, I want to write a book that tells people how they can live a better life through being more active and eating properly. Not some quick fix workout or weird diet, but a book about lifestyle change. So, are you single? Yes I am, and for right now I think it’s easier that way. With all the development in new tracks and fields. your home town of Fairfield, does anything look different? Where are you living these days? Every time I drive by one of the schools I’m amazed. I like to work I have a house in Fairfield and out at Ludlow near downtown in one in Florida so I split time Fairfield, and they have great between the two when I am not 14 Modern Affluent Living

traveling. Do you still keep in touch with your friends from high school? Yes, whenever I get a chance. What did you do this past weekend while you were home? I went golfing at Rock Rimmon, and I also attended a good friends wedding. It was raining so we partied under a tent all day, it was fun. Unfortunately I’ve missed a lot of weddings because of my tennis career, time flies. I recently realized half of my friends are married. When you are in town where do you like to go out and eat? Tengda, the food and atmosphere is great. What do you like to grab in a hurry when you’re in town? Robeks, there is just something about those shakes. Thank you James for taking the time to sit with 203.

LinDA DonnelLy A Gutsy Lady

At

6:30 AM in West Orange, New Jersey, a firm yet loving fatherly voice was heard saying, “Get up!” “Please Dad, just 15 more minutes,” mumbled the groggy-eyed 12 year old as she curled up in bed. “My friends get to sleep in until 10 or 11 AM during their summer vacation.” “Get up!” the voice reiterated. “It’s time to train. I will join you today at the gym for your workout. Never be lazy. Laziness ultimately holds people back.” Those two words, “Get up,” resonate clearly from the childhood of Linda Donnelly, founder, editor and publisher of The Modern Estate. Her father ingrained this energetic work ethic in his only child. This discipline and self-sufficiency transformed Linda into an all-state track and field champion in the grueling 400meter dash. She also ran the 200 meters in high school. As an adult, Linda became a very successful entrepreneur. She inherited her business savoir faire from her mother, now 74. “My mother took a small family furniture store and turned it into a large, successful business that allowed her to retire at age 54. She taught me how to treat people with respect, whether it was the person cleaning the hallway or the one designing it.” Linda believes that if you treat people with respect and kindness, they will reciprocate by doing a good job for you. “How you treat people is a big factor in business,” she points out. “People want to work with you, not for you. They want to be heard. Being a good listener is a very

Profiles

important component to success.” And successful she is. The Modern Estate strives to educate, inform, inspire and address all matters directly related to creating or maintaining a modern estate. It tackles the challenges facing the luxury homeowner. Before purchasing a modern estate, Linda suggests contacting an expert in the industry. It can be an architect, a builder or a respected real estate agent. This person should be someone you consider a trusted advisor, an individual who has insight into the industry and will lead you in the right direction. Get up! The work doesn’t stop there. Linda encourages prospective buyers of modern estates to do their own homework, which will assist the process. In order to transform your home into a modern estate, she recommends making estate or home related decisions using innovative and progressive thinking about all aspects of the home: from what materials to use in the construction of a modern estate to its functional décor. The Modern Estate has been recognized for its useful information. After only two years in distribution, it has won national awards both years from FOLIO, which recognizes outstanding work in the magazine business. The first year, The Modern Estate won an award for its article on “The Glass House,” the 47-acre New Canaan, Connecticut home of the late, renowned architect Philip Johnson. The second year, the magazine won a Folio award for its article on an equestrian photographer whose art is highly collectible and is absolutely phenomenal in the house. Linda Donnelly’s journey to The Modern Estate, like her entire life, is very interesting. After attending private school in New Jersey, she attended Duke University. From Durham, North Carolina, Linda went to Hollywood to work in film development for Columbia Pictures. After a couple of years in California, she became homesick for the New York metropolitan area. Linda did not fit into the Hollywood scene and lifestyle. Moving back to Manhattan, Linda spent most of her 20s working as an agent representing fashion photographers and male models. Fashion

photography taught her how to visualize things on a printed page, “how a book should flow and look.” While working in the Big Apple, Linda visited friends in Westport and quickly fell in love with Fairfield County. She relished the area’s architecture, loved being by the water, and was enchanted by its quaint, New England towns. “I find Fairfield County very charming and with a level of sophistication not usually found in other suburbs.” Fairfield County’s proximity to Manhattan definitely enhances its high level of suburban sophistication. Linda appreciates 203’s fine restaurants, shops, playhouses and vibrant culture. In Stamford, she enjoys dining at the Sierra Grille, Dakshin Indian Cuisine, or the Grand. On a Friday or Saturday out with friends for drinks, Linda highly recommends any Italian Chianti. Her favorite dessert is waffles and ice cream with powdered sugar, “preferably from

the Jersey Boardwalk.” L i n d a discloses, “I am a classic Jersey girl who loves Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi.” After devouring those waffles and ice cream, The Modern Estate’s publisher is ready for a vigorous workout at Equinox, “by far the best gym.” Linda says unabashedly, “I’m not a prissy girl. I love kickboxing at Equinox. It’s the best!” Growing up, Audrey Hepburn was this Jersey girl’s style icon. “I cut my hair like her, dressed like her, and emulated her in many ways. I found Audrey Hepburn to be

Linda Donnelly a very elegant, classy and compassionate human being.” A film buff, ‘Gone With the Wind’ is Linda’s favorite, “followed by six Audrey Hepburn movies.” After her parents retired and moved to Naples, Florida, Linda reflected deeper on her own life and future. An only child in her mid-30s, the sobering reality that there was nobody pulling her to New Jersey sunk in. She left the fashion industry, moved to Westport and started teaching writing to seventh graders in New Canaan, after earning a Master’s degree. Linda reveals bluntly, “I left the city to look for a husband, reconnect with my suburban roots, and start a family. I did not want my life to turn into another episode of ‘Sex and the City’.” Linda met her husband, Richard Donnelly, on a blind date. For 25 years, Richard has been a very talented and successful luxury homebuilder who, with his architect brother, founded Donnelly and Donnelly Architectural Design and Construction Management. A third brother is a carpenter. Linda credits her husband for planting the seed that grew into The Modern Estate Magazine. Richard saw a niche in the market for a substantive magazine that appealed to both genders. Linda confidently asserts, “The Modern Estate is a balanced home magazine, popular with both men and women.” Richard and Linda Donnelly have three beautiful, talented sons ages 10, 8 and 6. Kyle, the oldest, is an incredible athlete who has played ice hockey for six years. Jack, the middle child, is a computer whiz. Linda describes her youngest son as an athletic, easygoing and “very sweet” kid. She is raising her children to be respectful people who treat one another and others with kindness and compassion. Linda enjoys spending time with her family, be it cheering Kyle on at hockey games, swimming at home in the family pool, or jumping on the trampoline. “I am very athletic with my boys,” says the former high school state champion 18 Modern Affluent Living

Profiles sprinter. While Greece is her favorite overseas getaway spot, having been there a few times on vacation, Linda equally enjoys staying at home. Her husband has renovated the third floor of their home, which she describes as looking like an Adirondacks cabin. Shopping on Greenwich Avenue is a delightful pastime for Linda. Michael Kors, Forever 21, and Lord and Taylor are some of the stores she frequents. Although she’s not a prissy girl, Linda has been spotted at Divaz Salon or in Stamford’s “Classic Nails” getting a pedicure. When it comes to cars, Linda reveals, “I love my Mercedes-Benz.” What has driven Linda Donnelly to such levels of success in business and family life? “I like to make beauty. I like to produce a beautiful product inside and out. Whatever it is, I like to do it right.” To help others achieve their goals, Linda advises, “Have guts… You can’t give up.” So, the next time you see an elegant, compassionate and successful lady driving down Greenwich Avenue in a Mercedes-Benz, and you think it’s Audrey Hepburn, take a second look. It is an equally elegant, compassionate and successful lady: Fairfield County’s own charming and gutsy Linda Donnelly.

The Serious Class Clown

If

you think Mickey Mouse is hilarious, spend a couple of hours with Mickey Sherman! There is never a dull moment with this engaging and renowned criminaldefense attorney who describes himself as having been a poor student and a class clown growing up. His quick humor and wit are unmatched. In the legal profession, however, the story is very different. When Mickey Sherman walks towards a courthouse, pit bulls within a ten-mile radius run for cover. If you’re looking for a lawyer, Mickey suggests, “Don’t necessarily look for a nice guy. You want an attorney who has had results. Law is a results driven business, so you need to find someone who has had success in your type of case.”

“My old, beat up Chevy was just fine with me.” Living up to his reputation as the class clown, Mickey quips, “The ‘No Child Left Behind’ policy in Greenwich declares: You get to go to your friend’s homes in Vail in the winter and to you friend’s home in Nantucket in the summer!” After graduating from Greenwich High School, Mickey earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and graduated in 1971 with a J.D. from the University of Connecticut Law School. He explains, nonchalantly, his motivation to study law. “I belonged to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity in college. When I saw all my brothers taking the law school entrance exam, I decided to do the same thing.” Mickey served as an Assistant Public Defender in the Stamford Superior Court for one year, then served as an Assistant Prosecutor for four years. In 1976, he was appointed Assistant Town Attorney for the Town of Greenwich. Mickey Sherman is a founding member of the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association; a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and a member/ lecturer of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association.

Michael “Mickey” Sherman was born in Los Angeles, California, near Hollywood Boulevard. At age 5, he moved to the east coast because of his father’s employment in the advertising business. His family settled in Greenwich, Connecticut. Growing up poor in a rich town afforded him access to good schools, as well as many great activities and programs. He was never bitter or jealous at seeing the MG or Corvette belonging to his classmates in the high school parking lot. Mickey says unabashedly, After being successful in a variety of high profile

Mickey Sherman and “not so high profile” cases which were reported in both the local and national media, Mickey was tapped as a legal expert and commentator on MSNBC, CNN, Rivera Live, Fox News and TruTV (formerly Court TV). He has been employed as a legal analyst on CBS News, appearing on the CBS Early Show and CBS Evening News. Great exposure on television has been a doubleedged sword for Mickey. “TV exposure can hurt your practice, making it appear as if you are too expensive, too busy, or only handle high profile cases,” he warns. “It is not just about 20/20 or 48 Hours. I’m a real garden variety criminal-defense lawyer who handles real, everyday cases such as shoplifting, domestic violence, DWIs, larceny… You name it, I do it.” In addition to serving as a legal commentator on various networks, Mickey Sherman is also the author of How can you defend those people? His poignantly insightful response to this question is, “Because every client is different, every case is different and everyone deserves the best defense available to them! ”

Mickey’s son made him the grandfather of a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl. Mickey is proud of the special bond he shares with all the kids and especially his grandson, “We both like the color green.” A motorcycle enthusiast, Mickey has owned a HarleyDavidson for 30 years and enjoys windsurfing. He’s also a fanatical snowboarder. With such high-energy hobbies, one would expect to see a sweaty Mickey Sherman running up and down the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro alongside Kenyan runners preparing for the Olympic marathon. Surprisingly, when it comes to exercising, Mickey reveals, “I drive by the gym now and then.”

With respect to Fairfield County, Mickey likes the fact that its citizens are congenial. “We are Mickey has a relentless not living in a desert. drive not to mess It is culturally a great up because people’s place, a combination freedom and lives are of rural and urban life, often in his hands in the with Manhattan only 45 courtroom. The Michael Bolton Charities by Misha Mohajerin

“S

ometimes in our lives, we all have pain, we all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there’s always tomorrow”. If you are a Michael Bolton fan, you probably recognize these lyrics from his song “Lean on Me.” However, what you may not know is that these lyrics still resonate in Bolton’s life, particularly in his charity. In addition to Bolton’s singing career, The Michael Bolton Charity, which was founded in 1993, seeks to protect children and adults from social and racial discrimination. Bolton invites children and adults to lean on his charity for help, and to realize there is a tomorrow which holds great opportunities.

all About” and a soulful re-recording of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding. Since then, Bolton has topped Billboard’s Traditional Classical charts, won two Grammy Awards for

Michael Bolton was born in New Haven, CT, and now resides only a few miles away in a marvelous mansion in Westport, CT. In 1975, at the age of twenty two, Bolton recorded his first rock album for RCA Records called “Michael Bolotin”. After several years under the name of “Michael Bolotin”, Bolton decided to create a rock band named “Black Jack” in which he was the lead singer. Although this heavy metal band received much popularity, Bolton realized that he was destined to remain a solo artist. In 1983, Michael Bolton was signed by Colombia Records under his real name, which took his career to the next level as a solo artist. That same year, Bolton made the Top 100 bestsellers. He released many hits, including “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.” It was not until the late 1980s that Bolton adopted more of a romantic and pop influenced style in his music, as opposed to a heavy metal tone prevalent in his earlier albums. This change brought Bolton even more success in 1987, with the release of his album “Hunger” which contained hits such as: “That’s What Love is 28 Modern Affluent Living

Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and has released over ten more successful albums. With such an impressive resume, one may be surprised to know that his passionate music and cap-

Profiles tivating voice are only one of the many gifts Bolton is blessed with. Underneath his talented exterior lies a heart of gold. The Michael Bolton Charity is dedicated to helping women and children who are victims of violence and poverty. It also tackles homelessness. Bolton and his team strive to develop better education through scholarships and financial aid, as well as broaden job opportunities in order to protect women and children from social and racial barriers. There are annual events and benefit concerts dedicated to raising money for this cause. Every year, the charity is packed with celebrities and prestigious Connecticut residents to support Bolton’s charity. The 16th Annual Michael Bolton Charities Benefit Concert & Celebrity Golf Classic was held on the night of September 21 2008, at SCA’s Rich Forum in Stamford, CT, and continued until the next morning at the Rockrimmon Country Club. However, this is not like any typical event you have ever experienced. Bolton invites all his friends and family, including his mother Helen Bolotin, to make every single person feel like a true family. This year’s celebrity guests included actor, Kevin Bacon, philanthropist Doris Buffet, and many other celebrity actors and athletes. The night of the charity event consisted of a delicious dinner, an auction of donated apparel from celebrities, and a one of a kind Michael Bolton concert. This year,

Bolton took his concert to another level and invited legendary artist, Dave Mason, to rock out with flutes, saxophones, and Bolton’s full-blown band. The band was more powerful than ever, and the euphoric vibe swept away the hundreds of supporters who arrived. In the morning, everyone gathered once again to enjoy a hearty breakfast, and to play a good game of golf. Once again, this was not just any golf game. There were hundreds of golf carts taking off simultaneously with different sponsors waiting at each tee. Many of the sponsors included American Airlines, Thomas (Tommy) Febbraio from Coldwell Bankers, and other insurance and clothing companies, who cheered golfers along the way. This up close and personal event allowed people to get to know Bolton as a friend, not as the singer. The weekend charity event was a small price to pay for such a big cause. Everyone joined together for the same reasons: to have fun, meet amazing people, and of course, to donate to the charity. Bolton continues his quest to give to those less fortunate, and welcomes everyone to experience the joy and excitement with him, his family, and friends in the next event. Clearly, this down to earth Connecticut resident has not allowed fame and glory to detach him from what remains truly important.

T

he cities surrounding Manhattan are on the rise as young professionals are pouring in and calling the neighborhoods on the outskirts of the Big Apple their new homes. Thirty minutes outside of New York City lies White Plains, a city located in the heart of the affluent Manhattan sub-

urb, Westchester County. This booming city has become a hot spot with residents from the Tri-state area making their way to White Plains just for the nightlife and undeniable fine dining. One restaurant stands out above the rest: 42, located on the 42nd floor of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Restaurateur and Executive Chef Anthony Goncalves elevated the meaning of fine dining when 42 opened its doors to the public last December.

A partnership with noted real estate developer Louis Cappelli, Goncalves’ appreciation for high-quality ingredients, fresh flavors and bold presentations are showcased in a fabulous menu of Contemporary New American cuisine. Guests are transported to the restaurant by an express open-view elevator scaling the exterior wall of the skyscrapers with breathtaking views of Manhattan, Long Island Sound, and Northern Westchester. Goncalves has divided the floor plan into a number

of smaller spaces, each with its own unique dĂŠcor. Complete with a bar, a lounge, the main dining room, a private dining room and a mezzanine with seating, 42 has even more to offer. On the 43rd floor lies the Skylounge: an entire floor dedicated to making your private party or function even more personal and enjoyable. Boasting a pool, luxurious leather couches, a pool table and music, the Skylounge is the perfect place for any event you desire.

Fairfield County residents are embracing 42’s cuisine, as Chef Anthony Goncalves’ mouth-watering dishes are becoming the talk of the town. It may seem ironic – Goncalves is a Connecticut resident himself. From Connecticut to White Plains, Goncalves is bringing the crowd and a new light to White Plains with 42’s unique menu; plates that deftly balances bright, bold flavors and fresh ingredients. Self-taught Chef Anthony Goncalves

began his culinary career in the restaurant of a family friend who offered him a job in Westchester. From working every front-of-house position, busboy to manager, Goncalves learned to value hospitality as much as cuisine, which is proven in 42’s spectacular service, friendly staff and tasty dishes. At the age of 26, he opened Trotters Tavern featuring pub food fare, and eight months later dropped “Tavern” from its name in order to serve a new, more

refined menu. The success of Trotters enabled Goncalves to open Peniche, a restaurant dedicated to his Portuguese heritage. 42 gives Goncalves the opportunity to focus on his original concept, fine dining, and he has without a doubt attained the perfection he set out to achieve. 42’s menu has the ability to indulge even the most ambitious diner’s enthusiasm for fine dining. This balance of sophistication and simplicity carries through to 42’s wine collection. The select, yet

diverse, wine list includes American classics, intriguing bottle from smaller vintners, and a depth of international selections. Between the spectacular views and cuisine, combined with Chef Anthony Goncalves’ culinary expertise, 42 has certainly lived up the their slogan “It’s different up here”. Don’t miss out on a dining experience that will leave your taste buds satisfied and waiting for your next visit to the new, delicious restaurant, 42.

Energy for the Young Professional by Dr. Robert Zembroski

T

he alarm goes off. You stumble out of bed and into the shower. Your thoughts of work make you realize you have too much on your plate and not enough time to get it done. You get dressed and realize you have no time to make breakfast, so you jump in the car and drive to your nearest coffee shop for your first cup of java and egg sandwich. After you answer voice mail messages, you return calls as you drive to work laughing about the events that took place over the weekend. Once at work, you find yourself under the gun to get things done while stressing about the deadline on your current projects. During your fast paced day, you continue to drink coffee and all other liquid stimulants you can possibly get your hands on because you find yourself not having the energy to get you through the day. You realize the egg sandwich you ate hours ago can not sustain you throughout the day, so you look for something quick to eat to satisfy your hunger. Lunch time rolls around. You usually consume poor nutrient filled foods for lack of knowing what to eat, or because healthy food is unavailable to you. A few hours later you reach for more coffee or an energy bar because you feel tired and you realize you have a few more hours left at work. At the same time, you contemplate going to the gym after work and agonize over it because you have neither the motivation nor the energy to get there. For the young professional in these demanding and chaotic times, the need to create and maintain energy throughout the day is important. Our food has a limitless supply of macro and micronutrients to power us throughout the day. Most of us barely tap into this endless supply. We can all become more efficient eaters. The purpose of this article is to provide easy, practical

Tip

3.

tips for getting the most energy out of the foods we consume. Tip 1. Start your day with a high protein breakfast Get Simple carbohydrates release sugar in the body at a faster rate than complex carbs, fats, and protein, which gives the body an immediate “up” feeling. Because simple carbohydrates are short-lived, you are constantly fighting a battle for energy during the day. Start the day off more balanced, by eating a whole-grain cereal, sprouted grain breads (complex carbohydrates), eggs, or even a nutritious protein shake. A meal high in protein can be helpful in one respect: it raises noradrenaline and dopamine levels in the brain (two chemical messengers which keep you alert and motivated and full of energy). Since the main energy source for the body are carbohydrates, eating only protein is not recommended. Having a balanced meal consisting of protein, fats and complex carbohydrates is preferred. Tip 2. Drink more water Most people don’t drink enough water. Water is made up of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. The oxygen from the water is needed for many processes in the body, including energy production. How much water should you drink? The rule of thumb is: take your body weight and divide it in half. This number equals the amount of water in ounces that your body needs. For most people, this is roughly 4 liters a day. It is very important to drink at least 1 liter upon waking up in the morning, as this is you’re your body is most dehydrated.

adequate sleep There is evidence to suggest that a lack of sleep can lead to alterations in appetite regulation. Studies show that not enough sleep alters circulating levels of Ghrelin and Leptin – hormones that regulate hunger. Not getting enough sleep makes your body think there is a shortage for food, which activates the appetite centers in the brain. This causes an increased appetite and the desire for calorie-dense, high carbohydrate foods. Remember that simple sugars and simple carbohydrates lack any nutritional value. They will spike your blood sugar and give you that momentary boost of energy. Following this “high”, your blood sugar crashes and you become exhausted. Eight hours of sleep a night is recommended. Tip 4. Limit your eating at night and don’t eat carbs after 6-7pm Eating late at night is unhealthy for a myriad of reasons, but predominately because it disrupts the production of hormones that help us burn fat for energy. Eating a carbohydrate rich meal at night decreases our production of growth hormone. Growth hormone is necessary for turning body fat into fuel for energy. Eating a calorie enriched meal will also cause insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar

203lifestyle.com 47

Energy and metabolism) to elevate which will store excessive blood sugar as fat. Not only is this undesirable, it is unhealthy because it increases body fat and slows down our metabolism and energy production. Tip 5. Eat 4-5 small meals a day There is no consensus on what constitutes the best diet, but for the sake of variety and health, a moderate diet consisting of protein, complex carbs, and fat appear to be better in the long run. A simple diet to follow consists of 30% protein, 20% fat and 50% carbs. Frequent small meals allow a constant source of fuel for the body and energy to power you through the day. Tip 6. Exercise Physical exercise promotes mental health, reduces anxiety and stress, and increases energy. Research has shown that regular aerobic exercise boosts the immune system, increases endorphins, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and decreases the risk for developing cardiac disease, diabetes, and obesity. Different types of aerobic exercise can be performed for varying lengths of time, depending on how strenuous the activity. Aerobic exercising includes: dancing, skating, skiing, running, walking, bicycling, stair climbing, and swimming. The benefits of regular aerobic exercise are very apparent, and should be incorporated into everyone’s life. Going to the gym, jumping on a bike, or into a pool, is not always an option during the day. If you are unable to do any strenuous activity during the day or during your lunch break, try going for a 15 minute walk after eating your lunch. This exercise will improve digestion as well as increase your energy levels. Other ideas include getting off the bus or train one stop earlier and walking the rest of the way. You could also take the stairs instead of the elevator. While it may be hard to exercise and workout during the day, periodic bursts of physical activity throughout the day will definitely improve your focus, attention, and energy level. For the next week, follow these simple tips and you will be pleasantly surprised at the new found energy you experience throughout the day! If you find that no matter what you change about you eating, sleeping and exercise habits, you still have no energy and remain fatigued, an underlying health problem may exist. Fatigue and poor energy can be attributed to a sub clinical thyroid condition, adrenal gland fatigue, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), or a host of other undiagnosed physical problems.

InDIA IPA Pale Ale by Brad Beneski

Branch of hop, an essential ingredient of IPA’s

68 Modern Affluent Living

, or India Pale Ale, is the fastest growing style of beer in the United States. Defined by its generous amounts of hop presence and alcohol content, the style was initially made this way to survive caustic travels from Great Britain to troops who were in serious need of a beer run. The style has created fanatics, called Hopheads, who could very well be responsible for the more recent envelope-pushing that has sparked the even more popular styles of Double and Triple IPAs; with— you guessed it— even more hops and alcohol. So the next time you sit down to tackle the bitter beast that is known as the IPA, it’s best you stay tuned and find out just exactly why the style was created and why it continues to be put on a beer pedestal. History of The IPA Before the advent of refrigeration and pasteurization—a process of heating liquids to kill bacteria and other variables that would lead to spoilage, British brewers had their work cut out for them to create a beer that would be able to take long voyages to their traveling soldiers. After shipping away beer to soldiers only for it to wind up spoiled and sour, they soon discovered that hops weren’t only useful for flavor and aroma but they were also a natural preservative. And with the combination of hops and alcohol came a very hostile environment for the likes of bacteria and other beer-souring agents. This recipe, credited to English brewer George Hodgson, would eventually go on to be known as the India Pale Ale since breweries could finally ship their product to both soldiers and customers in the then British Empire of India. Rise of The Hopheads Though the term also carries the negative connotations of drug use, a Hopshead is also a person whose taste in beer revolves around

the end result of those infamous bitter flowers called hops. While Hopheads can get their fix from beer styles such as barleywines, pale ales, and any other brew with a noticeable hop presence, the IPA is hands down the safe haven for those described as Hopheads. In the entire science of beer, most of us are also concerned with just exactly how alcoholic a beer may be. Thus we would refer to the beer’s ABV, or alcohol by volume. While any selfrespecting Hophead goes straight to the IBUs that a beer contains. An IBU, or international bitterness unit, is an accurate indication of just how hoppy a beer will be. While the typical IPA ranges from 40 IBUs and up, some of the more aggressive IPAs can reach into the 200 IBUs zone— however, after a beer exceeds 100 IBUs, the human taste threshold becomes a little hazy and you end up not really even tasting anything beyond that. So, to any prospective Hopheads out there— the next time you sit down to enjoy some cold good ones, ask for the highest IBU that the bar carries. Depending on the type of bar it is— beer bars and sports bars tend to differ in beer knowledge— you’ll either get an odd look or a tall glass of a tasty hopbomb.

More breweries have at least one IPA on their roster and some having upwards to five different IPA recipes on hand, there is no doubt that this style and way of drinking is becoming the next trend in beer. Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, out of Rehoboth and Milton, Delaware, both champion and innovate the style with their continually hopped line of IPAs. Ranging from 60 to 120, the brewery uses the numbers to describe, not only IBUs, but also minutes. In their 60 Minute IPA, they continually add hops to the boiling wort—which is unfermented beer— for the entire 60 minutes that the beer is cooking. This is done in contrast to how most breweries would apply hops to their beer, which is traditionally a dash here and a dash there. In search of the holy grail of hoppy beers, DFH
