THE WORDS OF THE “MAD”
| What this booklet is about This booklet was created to accompany the issue of the film The words of the “mad” / against the words of the “logic”. In this you will find the texts that accompanied the film during the time that it was not public (June 2016 - September 2017), meaning the texts that were handed out in the screenings held in self-organised spaces and squats. Here, you will also find bibliography, sources and the full list of the material used in the creation of the film.
For us, the content of this brochure is an integral part of the film. Therefore, if the film is presented in a public screening, we would like this booklet to be printed out - to the degree this is possible and to be available in the space of the event.
September 2017, Papoutsadiko Squat
| A few words about the film This film is a scrapbook of extracts from texts and interviews, where survivors of psychiatry speak about a wide range of subjects. Through their words they deconstruct the prevalent perceptions on “disease”, they denude the practices of science and its statutory role, they free the issue of “madness” and its handling from the sphere of the personal, the private, the special. They ultimately place the issue on its real dimensions and its real space. Out of the walls of the psychiatric hospitals and out of closed doors. Within society and in front of everyone’s eyes - the eyes of the “logical” ones - pushing us all to confront our own responsibilities. And that precisely is the aim of this film.
|The context in which it was created The creation of this film is part of a series of events and actions that were organised by the squat’s assembly in the last two years1, regarding the subject of “mental health”. Our interest and pursuit on the subjects of psychiatry and its practices, of mental health institutions, of the sense of “madness” and so on, originated from the environment our squat is located. “In a suburb like Chaidari, where the two largest psychiatric hospitals are located, the subject of the handling of mental health is inevitably part of the local social reality. However, what’s not necessarily part of this reality, is the knowledge and awareness regarding the conditions and practices of treatment, as well as regarding the role of science and psychiatric institutions on a social and political level.” 2 Therefore, through the process of our selfeducation on the subject of mental health, we soon realised that this is not a partial or a special subject. “On the contrary, we perceive it as a political and overall subject that is an integral part of our political action and position. Because we cannot talk about a liberated society, when we are not dealing with all the parameters that are connected to the control and the role of authority and statutes on our lives. And about that, the description of the trajectory of psychiatry is revealing.”3 The specific issue therefore, is not another topic in our “agenda”, but something that pertains to us on every level. A conscious and not occasional choice, aiming to establish how and why the state, in the pretence of mental health, creates statutory tools useful in the accomplishment of social control and not the attainment of cure. Always on the back of the “invisibles”. And that precisely is the subject of the film.
1
These words were written in 2016, so they refer to actions and processes that started happening since 2014 and onwards. 2 Extract from the assembly’s text Asylum, “madness” and social control: the role of science and psychiatric institutions in the handling of “deviations”, which is the synopsis of the presentation that was held on 26/3/2015 at the squat. 3 Extract from the same text.

Where we stand & where we are addressed
Although we don’t use our own words in the film, the choice of extracts and the way they were combined, is obviously not accidental. Through this script and within the context we described above, we analyse some aspects of the issue and we take a stand. We stand by the survivors of psychiatry and we respect their choices (and not only the choices that are mentioned in the film). We stand against anyone who devalue them, exploit them and use them. Therefore, the critique that is developed in the film is not addressed to the survivors but to anyone (individuals, groups, institutions) who stands against them. As we say in the introduction of the film, in the war of the “logical” ones of this world, we have chosen a side, the side of the “mad”.

| About the availability & use of the film
The film is now freely accessible online, which does not mean that this “previous” cycle of meetings and discussions has closed. We want the film to continue to be an “excuse” for common grounds and times, but at the same time we want this to also happen for everyone who chooses to create them without us. However, the fact that the film is freely accessible, does not mean that we agree to the public use of it by everyone or/and in all ways. So, it cannot be used by psychiatric guilds, by “experts” and funs of the ideology and the practices of dominant psychiatry. It cannot be used by the profitable “humanitarianism” of NGOs, of festivals and conferences that are organised or sponsored by ministries, pharmaceutical companies and institutions. It cannot be used by statutes, political parties, “private initiatives”. It cannot be used by any sector, body, group, individual who exploits or/and manipulates or/and devalues the survivors of psychiatry. It cannot be used by groups with racist context, by fascists and by any “fed up civilians” who turn against the unprivileged. It cannot be used by the media because it detests mediators. Lastly, it cannot be used by any space in which you need to pay an entrance fee to enter. The terms of use for the film could not have been different, not only because we are a squat that stands against any kind of exploitation and authority. But also because we choose to stand next to those whose words we used in this film. And one of them says:
note: the lyrics and texts that follow, are some of which were used in the creation of the film
The film was firstly screened on June 2016 in the central square of our town, 200 meters from the Psychiatric Hospital “Dromokaiteio”. Since then, it has been screened at events in several self-organised spaces (in Athens and Patra), after communication of the hosting groups with our assembly. During this time, we were given the opportunity to meet with other self-organised groups, to find common grounds with survivors of psychiatry, to discuss and to analyse the subjects addressed in the film, the subjects not addressed in the film, the subjects that regard all of us. For those reasons we made the choice not make the film public for some time, in order to give ourselves some valuable time.
| History, Here We Come... Ntia K.
[...] Therefore I suggest, in front of this authoritative cholera that is named psychiatric coercion, to keep on fighting for self-organising and solidarity. We can and we want to.
Closing, I’ll speak about our dead, because society is nourished by graveyards. Our dead are stars that spread light, they are worms in the intestines of the oppressors.
We can, because we have our great diseased as our army, meaning the knowledge that is always black. And we want to because our heart pulsates in what is called freedom and dignity. We have our music, our painting, our instruments, our poets. We have the will to create, we have all the faith, all the superhuman power. We do have our weapons.
But the big black anti-suns, wells of truth within the principal plot, they absorb each other and people call them absences. To the mad who killed themselves, to the mad who were murdered by the Nazis, to all the obliterated of history, I have this to say… History, here we come…
| The Experts Are Dimitris Papastamatis
Here life is lived by people of abandonment…. The cure they await surrendered to knowledge without a fight…….. They control step by step bit by bit behaviours thinking, life…… The experts are commissioned the madness to control……. they correlate, consolidate entitle, apply….. The experts are….. In the sparkling gaze their “knowledge” provides They interrogate “people” with glances and words how they walk how they look how they love….. The mannerism at ease Madness they call……. They know the totality is not undiversified…… Here, people have no names they are numbers……. labels totally separated…… “Ill” people cross the dusk
secretive shadows fluid entities inhibited they highlight values of secrecy. Here madness inflames, lies in wait in spiral routes…… that divert from the axis of “logic” producing sparks of uprising ……. in Wagner sounds. The indifferent stroll to nowhere along with the pills is given lavishly as an excuse not as a cause….. Here they pace thinking, dreaming of a porphyra’s surface…… The words here evoke journeys out of the body between the unbridged body gaps…. And after the departure from the garden of the mad-lights in boredom they will walk in circles in the normal world…… Departing, there you will leave cracked pieces of yourself in a place of active violence where the judges are not judged. Here ends your journey as well. Waiting in agony to remain alive so long as chemistry allows it….

Today I don’t want you to see me. I’m hidden behind a veil transparently black and my eyes are motionless - they may even shadow me. I distil everything around me and I am dispersed in an air that only frost it can bring it has no oxygen and it’s unbearable for everyone around who lonely, as shadows they move stupidly trying to confirm their existence in an attempt of barren approach. | Psychiatry and Authority Giorgos Giannoulopoulos
For authority, the acceptable criticism needs to be within frames and by people who itself it defines, directly or indirectly, for this exact reason. Authority permits judgement to those who it knows that will move within defined contexts. Every effort of criticism out of these frames and by people who have no permission to judge, are dealt with direct or indirect persecutions, often of a wild and extreme type. Every opinion beyond the allowed, is unwanted, to say the least. When someone is judgemental, they don’t judge authority, but they play its game, they are its extension and they deceive their fellow beings. Unfortunately, there are many who have accepted this role. Perish the thought! Regardless of how this institution came to be. Either as a union, in need of protection by threats, with their common cultural or other identity as a connecting link, or as a result of the occupation of a wide area by foreign invaders, who enslaved the weak or peaceful residents and forced them to work in order to reap the benefits of their toil. Regardless of how this state structure came to be, the authority behind this label, the so-called ruling class, predestined it and led it to end up a forced labour camp, a method of draining the hard work of its citizens. In the beginning, by the use of raw violence (remember the ancient saying, state and violence are siblings), and even today, the laws, the rules of the state, especially those that are of critical value for the survival and the perpetuation of the power hidden behind the state, they are applied by the force of weapons. Literally with violence. In fact, by the means of constant propaganda, it
has managed to convince that this is for the common good, while the real reason is the often preemptive suppression of every act or view that could become harmful for authority. To prove my point, if the state wanted to extinguish the so-called underworld, it could do it effortlessly. But then everyone would realise, what is the use and against who they developed the more and more complex equipment, systems and scopes of the security forces. I will mention here, that 10-15 years ago, the New York chief of police at the time said: “The police is an effective occupational army for the poor”. To sum up, authority ought to give a special allowance to the people of the underworld, as a recognition of their contribution to its preservation. Since the time that authority was materialised under the mask of the state, three things remain unchanged: 1. The efforts of its in awareness slaves to be liberated in any way and by any means - in or out of the moral behaviours or ways that the authority tries to convince them to accept, by which it itself never abides. 2. The efforts of the compromised in their slavery - which they consider as something normal, acceptable - for more “freedoms” within the context of their slavery and in acceptable by the authority ways, since they are harmless to it. 3. The efforts of the authority to neutralise and if circumstances allow it to eradicate the first category, and to fool the second. Over the years the authority, in order to preserve its privileges intact and its slaves docile and under control, it tried out several methods, worships - religions - gods, ideologies - sociologies conspiracy theories, etc. It is not accidental that religion uses the term flock for the people. The incitement is I believe well known: the slaves on the one hand to obey their lords because it is god’s will. Always combined with the violence against those who do not comply with these incitements. And every time that each method weakened or failed, it found a new one to preserve its subjects in physical and mental slavery and its own privileges intact. Today, authority would love to have us all lobotomised or with chips in our heads, in order to preserve the situation as is. That means, the many to work in order for the few to live like princes.
Since the use of violence does not always bring the desired result and it can cause reaction, the authority uses several other methods against those who question it, or just against those that it judges that they are annoying and out of acceptable boundaries of behaviour and self-expression. In order the authority to neutralise the annoying, harmful and unwanted ones, it used according to the era, methods that varied from the physical extermination (read the book of K. Simopoulos “Torture and Authority” for more details regarding the methods), up to the ultimate deprivation of their rights and their banishment to the margins, characterising many of the unwanted behaviours as mental disorders and thus, fundamentally destroying their future. It’s a subject that I have thoroughly analysed in a previous discussion. When someone is characterised as mentally ill, they essentially cease to have any rights and are pushed to the margins for life, especially if they belong to the unprivileged. If we look at the 20th century from this angle, we will see that the methods of extermination of the unwanted by the authority - methods that culminated during the 3rd Reich (the homeland unfortunately of Nietzsche also, of Schopenhauer, Kant, Goethe, Schiller), were common practice in the so-called civilised world. How many have been murdered, how many have been persecuted, how many tortured, how may sent to the margins, thanks to the theories of Lombroso about criminal physiognomies and features. How many mentally confused people have been used in eerie anatomical experiments or were embalmed while being alive by him, and under the sponsorship and the reinforcement of the state of authority. I read at the Discovery magazine, issue of December 2006: “Massive programmes of eugenics with mandatory sterilisation of the genetically inferior, were widely applied during the interwar period in the USA and Sweden.” And later, “The medical science of the interwar period reached to the level of lending its prestige to infanticides and prohibitions of marriages, to displacements, to ethnical cleansings.” Today, in order the authority to eliminate those who have unacceptable behaviours and thinking, it characterises them as mentally ill and legislates that they need psychiatric therapy, and through propaganda, it has made the society to accept the often forced use of extremely dangerous substances of “cure”, as normal.
But if we consider how many serious, even deadly side effects these substances have, then we must ask ourselves what does the authority mean - the establishment in general - when they use the word therapy. When wide research abroad (of course) report that the number of the characterised as mentally ill who got well by taking psychiatric medication is about the same as the number of those who got over their problem without medication, then what should we think about the nature of the intentions of the authority, the mechanisms of which, by characterising you as mentally ill, put you in the margins for the rest of your life. And here of course, I don’t include those who have behavioural disorders due to brain or pathological lesions or alterations due to physical problems. How many of those who consume psychiatric medication have been informed that their life expectancy is about fifteen years lower than the rest of the population and that the analogy of death between the users of psychiatric medication and the general population is 20 / 1. If that is not social eugenics, then what is? At one time, there was a saying that the mad don’t get cancer. It was an exaggeration, but not so much. Now, cancer decimates and on top of that, in very aggressive forms. The same with diabetes and heart disease. What kind of cure are we talking about? Since the time that the authority accepted the psychiatric attribute as a science, it channelled and used it as a tool to control the unwanted behaviours and tendencies, as a tool of suppression. It was the psychiatrists of Nazi Germany who implemented the T4 programme, which included the murder of hundreds of thousands of people who were characterised as a burden to the Reich. Besides, the roots of the theory that is dissipated today, that the so-called psychiatric illnesses have genetic causes, originates from the psychiatrists of Nazi Germany. Apparently, they found worthy successors of their work. The authority used, and not just once, the psychiatrists as executioners. Many of them took pleasure in it. They took pleasure in the feeling of the power to decide who lives and who dies. Who would be characterised as human and who as a subhuman. But whichever the intentions of authority are, regarding the aforementioned under persecution categories of people, and in order to have some kind
of social consent so that it can pass its line, it needs a scientific background that justifies its acts. And of course, a number of collaborators - employees to implement them. There is a well-known proverb about a shepherd, who in order to stop dealing with his wayward flock, he convinced some sheep that they are something superior to the others. As a result, the “superior” animals kept the order in the flock, the shepherd found his peace, and of course, the entire flock, “superior” and “inferior” together, they went quietly and orderly to the butcher’s. More and more people realise that the authority needs psychiatry not to heal, but to isolate suppress - marginalise, and it wants it to be absolutely consistent in it. We can understand which of the psychiatrists insist on believing that psychiatry has to only be a potentially healing act, by the direct or indirect persecutions they are under by the authority and the real clergy of their orthodox colleagues. The psychiatric hospitals were not created as healing grounds but as concentration camps. In the beginning for people who had physical brain lesions and disorders (meaning, pathological problems). Gradually, in the inmates, they included people with annoying and undesirable for the authority behaviour, no matter how this behaviour was named by the authority and its ensconced servants. No matter what the intentions of authority are, it cannot implement them without the contribution of those whose ethical levels are such that they believe that those who are unfortunate enough to fall into their hands are objects for appropriation. And there are many, too many of those. On the backs of those unfortunate people, they build their careers, on their backs they base their standards of living and they know that if someone is recorded as mentally ill, then they are denied every essential right, so they can feel free to bring all their complexes on the surface. Many of those have the audacity to claim that they serve the mentally ill or that they work in the field of mental health, while given the chance, they bring out such rot that you feel revulsion (at times, many stories with such protagonists come to light by the media). The most recent example that sheds light to the intentions of authority, is the effort to connect the so-called mental disorder to DNA anomalies, something that I mentioned earlier that has its origins in the theories of the Nazis. They tell us that it deviates by some nebulous correct standard, without explaining which this standard is, and which
the psyche characteristics of the standard are. In my opinion, the authority obviously means and believes, that the behaviour and the psyche of the individuals with the correct type of genes, correspond to the psyche and behaviour of ape-men, who they accept as ideal citizens. Another example of the authority’s intentions, is connected to the so-called de-institutionalisation and not only to that. Note my thinking process. Step 1, the citizen needs to comprehend that some behaviours constitute disease - psychologic disease, but disease nonetheless, and as such it needs pharmaceutical treatment. That’s already done, it’s implemented.
there is a reason to interrogate them it will be much easier AND PERHAPS that last one has already been happening. And to conclude, if the citizen - user of psychiatric medication dies prematurely, there will be no problem for the authority. As a tobacco industry representative said in a study about a central European country, the more people die, the better for the insurance carriers. Don’t forget, WE’RE OVERPOPULATED.
Step 2, a special identification card for all transactions, in the prospect of the full replacement of the regular ID papers. That means, officially crazy and eternally in the margins, due to incredibility by being a mental patient. That’s in the process of implementation. Step 3, propaganda that the behaviours that constitute mental illness is a chronic chemical disorder of the brain that needs pharmaceutical treatment for life. Step 4, to convince the citizen to accept without reactions the former inmates of psychiatric hospitals as equal individuals, but in need of psychiatric medication in order to be able to function normally, in spite of the chemical lobotomy that the drugs cause them and make them wander around like zombies. Step 5, modulation to the European Union, the USA, etc., regarding rooms of increased surveillance with cameras and so on, for probable crisis. For the benefit of the patients of course. Step 6, propaganda to convince people that it is a natural thing to give medication by force to someone who denies to take the medication, for the patient’s wellbeing and for their ability to be able to live in the society (they won’t of course mention any side effects and reduced life expectancy). Step 7 and most important. When the citizen digests all the above, then the authority or some level of it, will be able to call a mental illness any behaviour it judges as annoying and it will be able to take restrictive measures against anyone bothersome, measures that will include isolation - drugs, lifelong stigmatism, because stigmatism IS lifelong, or if

against the words of the “logic”
About what “madness” is… About the drugs… About bed straps… About the suspicious glances in the neighbourhood… About a bunch of cops, who escort you to the prison made by the “logical” ones of this world.
And you - the “logical” ones, search in the genes for “madness”, designate the “problem” in the DNA. And regulate it with drugs and diagnoses. Drugs and diagnoses So that more of us can fit in your straitjackets… So that more of us become a surplus in your world… “Crazy” and stigmatised… “Crazy” and dangerous… And if there is a “cure” for this “sickness”… the “madness”… It is not aloperidin, it is not an antipsychotic, it is not a chemical substance that blocks our brains’ neurones… It is not the straps on the beds, neither the cameras for surveillance… It is not… If there is a “cure”, it is only our relations. Relations of trust, real relations, relations of understanding. If there is a “cure”, only freedom is...
In the war of the “logical” ones of this world we have chosen a side. The side of the “mad”.
