IT SKILLS

Graduation project and design philosophy elaboration About illusion - attitude Illusion is created when the essence is altered by outside forces. By delving into the possible causes behind the alteration, the designer embarks on a journey of self-reflection on social interactions. What has changed? What has not? Whether the fundamental parts have changed? It is a constant self-reflection/ examination on whether one has returned to the original self. About historic buildings - preferences Compared with the study of Natural Science, the study of Humanities and Social Sciences better resonates with personal preferences. By telling and retelling different narratives, the study of Humanities and Social Sciences is more accessible and heart-warming. About narratives – design approaches Stories are happening around us on a daily basis, forming an integral part of our lives. By pondering what story to tell, how to tell it and with what, anyone is able to create story that is one of its kind. Team work In my opinion, teamwork is an indispensible part of humanity. It is through team work that humans achieve mutual learning and growth. Variety is added when two people are involved in the work, thereby resulting in new possibilities that might not have been achievable with the capacity of just one individual.

SUNSET Taiwan is an island surrounded by sea, once during a family reunion outing together, we decided to follow the coastline from dawn to dusk tracing the footsteps of the sun, and recording our journey along the way. Lastly, I stacked three images from different times to create a space-time dimension within the recorded journey.

MOTIVATION

Goldberger Paul has once said if a place has a continuous past, one will not seal the past and turn around to live in the present and the future. From there, the past is helpful for defining now and continues to evolve in the process. Every generation will employ different ways to use the past, see the past, and interpret the past. Then the meaning of the past will be altered during the process.

TOPIC

Through looking into the montage technique used in narration in filmmaking, the presented type of space can be practiced to seek new possibilities for treating historical buildings.

PURPOSE

We attempt to make people think about the appearance of the building in the past by our spatial narration. Also, we bestow new activities upon the space to continue the life of the historical building Y

BUILDING’S FEATURES

When the seas change into fields, or the fields change into seas, these changes are all the images of space changing through time. The truth of seas changing into fields reminds us that time does not record the space. It is the space that records the time. 《The City Language by Hung-Tze Jan》

Future Appearance

How much should we keep? How do we choose? If our goal is to protect old buildings, how do we avoid clashing against the fact that an authentic location never stays the same?

Idle Space

The activity of selling rice is added so that the barn story can be continued. The unused space caused by system abandonment is transformed, and is thus revived once again. I attempt to use the Montage used in filmmaking to tell the story about the space

BOX EDITING BOX

It is as if the movie were edited. Through placing BOX, the original way of experiencing the space is changed. People may gain a better understanding of the history of the space.

The space serves as a transformation space for connecting every space. As one enters and exits the space, more than one scene is created based on different sequences and angles, bestowing upon the space the function of predictions and conclusions.

OUTDOOR HALLWAYS

Positioning the spaceďźš The entry explains the reason why the building was renovated through bullet holes, also serving as the start of experience. The relationship between the space and the buildingďźš Different times lead to different functions for the space. The space has recorded the expansion history to this day. By saving the frames of the past building with the later interpretation we make about the new activities, we are able to present the Japanese era, Nationalist government era,and modern times in parallel.

Activities in the Space: Excessive space

EDIBLE RICE SELLING AREA

Positioning the space: By presenting the old appearance, the original appearance of the barn can be restored. The relationship between the space and the buildingďźš Through tall pillars to show the uncommon height of the barn. Activities in the Spaceďźš Through selling a variety of rice and offering introduction, the space allows modern people to easily purchase the rice they need.

SERVICE STATION

Positioning the space:

The transforming space for all spaces The relationship between the space and the buildingďźš The purpose is to describe the characteristics of the building. Since the story of the building is on the walls, the scene can be made as the leading role through setting up the space. Activities in the Spaceďźš Rice consulting area, gift rice packaging area, service counter for the bakery classroom

RICE AS GIFT SELLING AREA

Positioning the space:

The space is the modernized display of the old appearance. The relationship between the space and the buildingďźš The horizontal ramp not only shows the width of the barn, but also allows people to be in close contact with the unique wooden frames of this barn. Activities in the Spaceďźš The space provides customized packaging, making rice selling more refined.

DINING AREA

Positioning the space:

The space for mixing new activities and old activities The relationship between the space and the building: The space is set up between the bakery classroom and the miscellaneous services counter, and through the interaction between the eating area and other spaces, we can achieve promoting rice culture.

Activities in the Spaceďźš

Through the atmosphere created by the old building and the choice of furniture in the eating area, the space is able to tell the busy modern people how to enjoy a meal.

COOKING STUDIO

Positioning the space:

There are newly-added activities in hopes of promoting the new rice culture. The relationship between the space and the building: The bakery classroom is perpendicular to the circulation and eating area, hoping that while the depth of the building is accentuated, the culture can be promoted through wide spatial arrangement.

Activities in the Spaceďźš

On weekdays, the island table acts as the space for rice tryouts. Ready-to-eat food packages are sold on the two sides. On weekends, there will be regular bakery classes, while presentations and symposiums take place occasionally.

This project was located on the 22nd Floor of a high class high rise condo community in Taipei. The site features only two residences per floor, while this floor is combined for a single unit, creating certain design limitations to achieve comfortability for the large space. We believe aside from the comfort of the home, creating an interesting and fun living space is one of the important things we want to express to the owner. Qi-Min Market derives from the concept of Taiwanese traditional markets, providing organic vegetables produced at their own farms, local seasonal fresh foods, freshly caught wild fish, and food preparation on the spot to create a lively atmosphere. As the hotpot restaurant expands its operation to Shanghai, we have to think about the different eating culture and how to keep the original brand spirit to blend into the local culture. We put forward three spatial images, namely, “market”, “square”, “stall” to shape the atmosphere of the entire space. To continue the “market” space for shopping, we added an eating area that resembles eating at a square. Also, the stalls that combine food selling and eating, different from the warm, friendly, and bustling spatial features in Taiwan, have a tinge of refinement, creating a special space that Shanghai people are used to.

Ximending is the gathering point for Taipei’s youth and attracts backpackers as their place to spend the night. The project site was originally a mixed purpose structure between commercial and residential usages. After remodeling, second to fourth floors were designed to be quest room areas. The 3F and 4F were most interesting, as they originally were a theater, and given the unique space requirements of a theater, retaining the original playful elements and creating 230 rooms in the 2,336 sq.m., as the project owners required, posed critical design questions for our efforts to adjust the design for comfort and enhance natural lighting.

MOTHER’S DAY When I was young my love for my mother was simple, dependent, straightforward, but after growing up, I became independent and after age 20 that love should be more clear and much more profound and deeper. The work seeks to express that ineffably inexpressible and easily forgotten sentiment. But we always know that a mother’s love is everlasting. Y
