The Mission Hills Group is pioneering the golf and leisure tourism industry and it is the cradle of golf in China. The Group boasts 22 golf courses in addition to world-class family resorts and spas, and high-end, exquisitely-designed residential developments in Southern China. Not surprisingly, the resorts attract a large portion of golfing tourists who flock to China, as well as being a highly desirable destination for many of China’s more than one million golfers. Destination Golf takes a look at the two men fronting this Mission, Ken Chu and Tenniel Chu. Keeping with our China theme, we also take a look at the Mission Hills Resort in Haikou, located on the exotic Hainan Island. Aside from its ten golf courses, the expansive developments in Haikou are hugely impressive. In October 2014, Mission Hills will be hosting the World Celebrity Pro-Am in Haikou, a prestigious celebrity golf event which Destination Golf is proud to be associated with as an Official media partner. Our travelling duo of Andrew & Paul Marshall visited the historical province of Champagne-Ardenne, a short 100km from Paris. This region is best known for its production of the world’s most famous sparkling wine, but there’s ‘golf among the grapes’ as they soon find out. The eyes of the European golf industry are set to be on Quinta do Lago in October when it lifts the curtain on its revamped North Course, redesigned by renowned American architect Beau Welling in close collaboration with Paul McGinley. We soon find out just why the North Course is predicted become one of the new stars of European golf. Last but not least, we report back from Fota Island Resort in Co. Cork, Ireland. Having just hosted the Irish Open for the third time this summer, this affordable 5-star luxury resort is nestled at the heart of a peaceful island, surrounded by gorgeous scenery and mature woodlands. We are big fans! Enjoy!

ON A MISSION Continuing the family legacy that was the brainchild of the late Dr. David Chu, his two eldest sons Ken Chu and Tenniel Chu are putting China golf on the map.

Volume 2 • Issue 23

11

For a sport that was probably inspired by the 8th century Chinese game of chuiwan, the game we know today only truly arrived in China in 1984. The sport has since grown rapidly with the first international tournament being the 1995 World Cup. It was held at Mission Hills, in Guangdong.Following the event’s success, interest in the game exploded with the number of Chinese golfers increasing from 50,000 to 250,000 within two years.

Administration from the University of Western Ontario, in Canada. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law degree in 2007, by his alma mater, for his contributions to sports and leisure developments and his community services in China and Hong Kong. With many successes and awards behind him he continues to lead the group in new endeavours, looking for opportunities and ways to grow the game of golf in China.

Mission Hills was the brainchild of the late Dr. David Chu, acknowledged by many as “The Father of Golf’ in China. He founded Mission Hills in 1992, and, within 15 years, it had become the largest golf facility in the world. Such ambition takes hard work and inspiration, traits that he passed on to his two eldest sons who now run the Mission Hills Group. Ken Chu, aged 40, is Chairman and CEO, and his brother Tenniel, aged 38, is the group’s Vice Chairman.

Tenniel Chu, Ken’s younger brother, graduated from the University of Toronto, Canada, with a degree in economics. He promptly pursued his passion for golf by studying Professional Golf Management at Humber College. On completing his studies he was employed at the US PGA Tour headquarters, where he underwent a unique management training programme, focusing on specific elements of the PGA Tour’s set-up. These included golf operations, PGA tournament event organisation, golf maintenance, golf shops, and merchandising control. This proved a vital foundation for the role he would later take on for Mission Hills.

The Mission Hills Group develops and operates championship golf courses, world-class family resorts and spas, and highend, exquisitely-designed residential developments in Southern China. It is pioneering the golf and leisure tourism industry and it is the cradle of golf in China. The Group boasts 22 golf resort and championship courses, designed by the greatest legends and architects in the game. Not surprisingly, therefore, the resorts attract a large portion of golfing tourists who flock to China, as well as being a highly desirable destination for many of China’smore than one million golfers. This number is expected to increase exponentially to 20 million by 2020, on the back of the game’s popularity and the considerable drive and passion of the two brothers. Ken Chu joined the Group in 1995, to continue his father’s work. Hong Kong-born Chu earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business

In 2001, he joined the family business, alongside his brother, Ken. As Vice Chairman he now oversees the overall operations and development of the world’s largest golf club. Under Tenniel’s leadership, the golf club has both met and exceeded international standards to become the benchmark for other golf and leisure operators in China. It emphasises that the Group continues to raise the bar for golf course operators, ensuring a strong, bright future for golf tourism in Asia. During his tenure, Tenniel has been instrumental in attracting international tournaments to Mission Hills, as well as golf’s biggest stars. In 2001, Tiger Woods first visited China and this was followed by multiple tournaments, including the Dynasty Cup (Asia’s Ryder Cup) in 2003, the Goodwill Trophy in 2005, and the World

Cup of Golf on four occasions. By the end of 2013, Mission Hills had hosted over 100 tournaments and almost all of the world’s best golfers. As well as elite professional tournaments, Tenniel and Mission Hills developed a diverse portfolio of competitions for amateurs, juniors and seniors. Significantly, he spearheaded Mission Hills’ industryleading emphasis on junior golf development. This will ensure that many of golf’s future stars will be Chinese, and that they will have honed their craft at Mission Hills. He has also assumed a golf ambassadorial role with OneAsia, appointing him as Secretary-General to help develop relations with national and international golf bodies. He is now the organisation’s Deputy Commissioner. Tenniel has also shared his considerable expertise and views at global golf conferences and tourism trade exhibitions, including the highly respected KPMG Golf Business Forum, the Asia-Pacific Golf Development Summit, and the Golf Inc. Conference. In 2011, inspired by Tenniel, and with his assistance, the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) established its first office in China, located in Haikou, with Tenniel as Chairman. The organisation covers 84 countries and has over 2000 members. Tenniel was also the first Chinese national to become a member at the historic Royal and Ancient Golf Club, based at St Andrews, Scotland. Alongside Ken, the brothers were jointly chosen in 2012, as Asian Golf Personality of the Year, by Asian Golf Monthly. In 2013, Golf Inc. named them the Most Powerful People in Asian Golf,as well as listing them in the Top 10 of the magazine’s global ranking for their commitment to promoting the game of golf.

Both rothers remain actively involved in Hong Kong and China charit y and communit y ser vices. Ken takes a par ticular interest in youth groups and activities, believing it is crucial to nur ture future generations to create a bet ter tomorrow for China and the world. In concer t with his passion for youth causes, he is also dedicated to helping fellow countr ymen in need. Over the years, the Mission Hills Group programmes have donated over RMB 500 million to various charitable endeavours. Tenniel’s charitable work includes the United Nations Charit y Golf event and the “Golfers 5.12 Fundraising Campaign” (recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest single-day golf tournament ever held). Tenniel was also a torchbearer for both the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen. The Group’s early operations saw the transformation of barren land on the outskir ts of Shenzhen and Dongguan, as well as a volcanic deser t on tropical Hainan Island. This helped to generate positive economic, cultural and environmental ef fects for the local communities. Under Ken’s leadership, Mission Hills has fur ther ambitions to create world-class leisure and living developments in China. Mission Hills already holds Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest Golf Club and the World’s Largest Spa Resor t. It is also one of the of ficial 5A-Level Tourist At tractions in China, alongside key cultural and scenic landmarks. Ken has been inspirational and, through the Chu family’s ef for ts, Mission Hills Group has become the pre-eminent conglomerate in the Chinese spor ts, tourism, leisure and enter tainment industr y.

The Group’s continuing expansion plans include a series of exciting new projects in Shenzhen and in Haikou. In Shenzhen, construction work is almost finished on a 500,000sqm “HOPSCA” – Hotel, Office Parks, Shopping Facilities, Convention Centre and Apartments. In addition to their 12 golf courses, one of the main features will also be China’s first Hard Rock Hotel. China’s first golf museum will also be located here, which is dedicated to the late Dr. David Chu, affectionately known as “The Father of Golf in China”. Mission Hills expansive developments down in Haikou are even more impressive. Aside from the 10 golf courses, a large Centreville will be a hub of commercial developments to include a duty-free shopping mall, ice skating rink and cinema. The massive 240,000 sqm LanKwai Fong will be a hub of shopping, entertainment, cultural and dining attractions. There will also be two residential properties and three hotels – a Ritz Carlton, Renaissance and another Hard Rock Hotel. Like that wasn’t enough, in June 2014 Mission Hills raised the curtain on a new Movie Town which will see the next wave of movies being filmed. The London South China University Haikou is another Mission Hills’ tripartite co-operation with the Haikou Municipal Government, University of London, and South China University of Technology. Its aim is to nurture a knowledge-based economy through international exchange and cross-cultural learning.

Outside of his Mission Hills commitments, Ken Chu has many public and community service appointments, whichinclude National Committee Membership of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and Standing Committee Membership of All-China Youth Federation. He is Vice Chairman of both the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment, and the Chinese Enterprise Sports Association. He is a Western University International Advisory Board Member. Tenniel’s considerable involvement with corporate and community life includes Membership of Shenzhen CPPCC, Deputy Commissioner of OneAsia, President of Guangdong Golf Association, Chairman of Hong Kong Youth Initiatives Foundation, and Hon. Advisor of HKFYG (Hong Kong Federation of Youth Group). The next steps for the Group and the two brothers will see them spearheading the Group’s evolution as it takes its tried and true branding and golf management services to Beijing, Shanghai, Yunnan, Chongqing, Xi’an and other destinations. With the globally recognised resort reaching ever greater heights, the Mission Hills Group has a worldwide profile and expansive goals which will continue to be directed by the inspirational Chu brothers.

From previous page GOLF AMONG THE GRAPES There are several courses to play in this up-and-coming golf area of France. Get proceedings underway at arguably the pick of the bunch, by teeing off at Golf de Reims situated 8km west of Reims, in the middle of the famous vineyards. This picturesque, gently undulating 18-hole woodland course provides an attractive mix of tight tree-lined fairways and large elevated well-guarded greens in the beautiful surroundings of the 15th century Château des Dames surrounded by a moat. Founded back in 1928 by the Reims and Épernay Champagne houses, the 6,055 metres par-72 course, which was originally a 9-hole layout, was later extended to 18 holes by Michael Fenn in 1973. To avoid the numerous trees that come into play, it’s important to plot a strategic route around the course and it’s not unusual on any given day to hear more sounds of golf balls hitting timber than woodpeckers during nesting season. At each tee-block the various Champagne Houses such as Moet & Chandon, Louis Roederer, Laurent Perrier, and Mumm advertise their produce, whetting the appetite for a flute or two of bubbly in the château clubhouse after the golf. 50km north-east of Reims on the outskirts of Fagnon village, is Golf de l’Abbaye de Sept Fontaines - a lovely 18-hole course built around an historic château nestling between valley and forest. The front nine is purely parkland with superb views of the château especially from the par-3 9th hole. Stop for lunch in the excellent restaurant before tackling the newer, more open back nine featuring characteristic rocky boulders landscaped around the greens. Located in the south of Champagne-Ardenne near the small village of Chaource on the edge of the Aumont forest is Golf de Troyes-la Cordelière, previously the property of the Counts of Chandon de Briailles. Its 18 hole-course rolls over a vast carpet of gently undulating greenery, dotted with water features and ancient trees. Other golfing options in the region include Golf de l’Ermitage (37km east of Troyes) with its par-3 12th signature hole and island green, La Grand Romanie (40km south-east of Reims), built on the site of an old Roman camp and Golf d’Arc en Barrois (80km south of Troyes), situated in the grounds of a château and featuring two lakes and elevated greens.

From previous page LAND OF THE LIQUID GOLD In between rounds of golf, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the region’s famous product – champagne. Champagne is in fact a ‘sparkling wine’ and traditionally made using a blend of three varieties of grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Once the juice is extracted, champagne undergoes two fermentation processes, first in casks and the second after the wine has been bottled and had sugar and yeast added. This allows the carbon dioxide to get trapped in the wine, giving rise to those famous and distinctive bubbles. Non-sparkling wines are only fermented once in casks. An excellent way to learn more about the champagne-making process is to explore the signposted roads that make up the Route Touristique du Champagne (Champagne Tourist Route) – 600km in total, divided into various circuits meander through the region’s principal wine-growing areas including Montagne de Reims (between the two champagne centres of Reims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs (south of Épernay) and further south, the Côte des Bar, specialising in smaller producteurs (champagne producers) that welcome thirsty golfers. The provincial town of Épernay is the best place for champagne tasting, and underneath the streets of the ‘capital of bubbly’, in some 100km of subterranean cellars, millions of dusty bottles of sparkling wine are maturing side-by-side until one day being popped open in celebration. Épernay is home to some of the world’s most famous champagne houses such as Moët & Chandon, De Castellane and Mercier, the most popular brand in France. Many of them are situated on or near the Avenue de Champagne and offer entertaining, informative tours followed by tastings and a visit to the factory-outlet champagne shop. Well worth a visit in nearby Rue Gambetta, is the cool bar and cellar combo of C. Commes Champagne, where you can sample champagne by the glass. 50 small independent winemakers from 50 villages in the main regions, are

If you like a particular champagne, you simply walk down into the cellar below the bar and buy one. From Épernay, it’s only a 6km drive north to Hautvillers, where champagne was first created three centuries ago. According to tradition, the ingenious idea of mixing various grape varieties from the Champagne-Ardenne region, and sealing the lot with a cork held in place with a wire collar to withstand the fermentation pressure, came from Dom Pérignon (1638 – 1715), cellar master at the Benedictine Abbey in Hautvillers. Hautvillers is one of those picture-perfect French villages with a bar, church and a few pretty houses. In the square you’ll find the Tourist Office where, for a few euros, you get a gentle walking tour with an explanation of Pérignon’s life and the effect he had on perfecting champagne. The highlight is the Abbey where he is buried. Northeast of Hautvillers, situated in the wooded hills around Verzy, is a totally new concept in enjoying champagne - the world’s first champagne bar in the trees. Le Perching Bar, is the brainchild of co-designers Germain Morisseau and Oliver Couteau, and sits on a wooden platform supported by 6-metre high stilts, accessed by a number of boardwalks suspended between the trees. Cool sounds emanate from the speakers, several local champagnes are on offer and the views are exceptional. From Verzy, its only a flute or two of bubbly to Reims, a town with a rich history, and together with Épernay, is the most important centre of champagne production and home to some prestigious producers such as Mumm, Tattinger, Pommery and Louis Roederer.

ACCOMMODATION FIT FOR A KING Staying at one of the 150 historic châteaux, manor houses or stately homes is an excellent way to experience France’s ChampagneArdenne region and to complement the golfing and champagne lifestyle. A classic example is Château d’Etoges, situated 22 km south of Épernay in the small village of the same name surrounded by vineyards. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, Château d’Etoges was once a privileged place where the Kings of France enjoyed staying on their way to the east, and Louis XIV himself greatly admired the beauty of the château’s garden, fountains and ponds. Overlooking a quintessential moat, this beautifully renovated château has twenty individually appointed bedrooms furnished with genuine antiques and tapestries. Downstairs, an imposing fireplace bears witness to banquets, meetings and celebrations from a medieval past. Classy French cuisine (with a good selection of wines and champagnes) is served in the adjoining L’Orangerie dining room, and after a tasty dinner it’s only a short stumble to your comfortable four-poster bed.

A close up of Cristal Champagne produced by Louis Roederer.

The château of choice for Reims, and nicely situated for playing Golf de Reims, is Château Les Crayères. Nestled discretely in a 7-hectare park with lush vegetation in the heart of the champagne city, this elegant home once owned by the Polignac family is now a luxurious gourmet retreat, where guests can relax in the twenty sumptuous rooms and where fine dining takes centre stage. General manager Fabrice Mercier and Didier Elena, the head chef, set out to create the perfect restaurant and to combine it with the ultimate in accommodation. North-east of Reims is Château de Montaubois, a beautiful 18th century building set in 4 hectares of parkland in Signy l’Abbaye. The owners, eccentric and likable Jean-François Monteil and his lovely wife Elizabeth have spent nearly three decades renovating the château to its former glory with original features and period furniture. They now offers B & B accommodation with 5 sumptuous rooms available to guests, delicious home cooked meals and a fascinating power point presentation about the history of the château and the renovation process. Château de Montaubois is conveniently located for playing Golf de l’Abbaye de Sept Fontaines which is only a short drive away.

Heidsieck & Co Monopole Blue Top Champagne Brut was the champagne that was served on Titanic. There was a rumor that a few bottles of this champagne that were recently brought out of the wreckage still tasted fantastic. Marilyn Monroe is believed to have once taken a ‘champagne bath’ that took approximately 350 champagne bottles to fill the bathtub.

FACTS ABOUT CHAMPAGNE

A champagne cork leaves the bottle at a velocity of approximately 38-40 mph.

Approximately 49 million bubbles can be found in a 750 ml champagne bottle that is stored at 20 ºC. Renowned scientist Bill Lembeck calculated this figure.

Non-vintage champagnes are aged for at least 18 months and vintage champagnes aged for a minimum of three years and up to ten and are the most expensive.

The pressure in a champagne bottle is three times higher than in an automobile tyre, measuring at ninety pounds per square inch.

The temperature of the champagne should ideally be 6 to 8 degrees C

The world’s tallest champagne glass stands at approximately seven feet and can hold up to 22 bottles of champagne. This glass was unveiled at a festival in Spotelo, a city in Italy.

Champagne should always be drunk in a tall narrow glass called a ‘flute’ to confine the bubbles and concentrate the aroma. To enhance the taste and aroma, the champagne should be allowed to sit for a few minutes after pouring into the glass.

The name ‘champagne’ is copyrighted and the wine can be named as champagne only if it is produced in France’s Champagne region. If a similar wine is produced, using the same methodology, elsewhere other than Champagne, then it has to be labeled as

The size of the bubbles is one of the factors that determine the quality of the champagne. Tiny bubbles denote high-quality champagne. Large bubbles are a mark of inferior quality.

The Group boasts 22 golf resort and championship courses, designed by the greatest legends and architects in the game. Not surprisingly, therefore, the resorts attract a large portion of golfing tourists who flock to China, as well as being a highly desirable destination for many of China’s more than one million golfers. The Group’s early operations saw the transformation of barren land on the outskirts of Shenzhen and Dongguan, as well as a volcanic desert on tropical Hainan Island. This helped to generate positive economic, cultural and environmental effects for the local communities. Located a short 20Km from Haikou Meilan International Airport on the exotic Hainan Island of lies Mission Hills Haikou Resort. Nestled among lush green gardens on a base of volcanic lava rock, Mission Hills Group has been able to create a truly unique resort. Given its similarities to the tropical climate and natural beauty of Hawaii, the island of Hainan is often referred as the “Hawaii of the East”. Mission Hills expansive developments in Haikou are hugely impressive. Aside from the 10 golf courses, a large Centreville will be a hub of commercial developments to include a duty-free shopping mall, ice skating rink and cinema. The massive 240,000 sqm Lan Kwai Fong will be a hub of shopping, entertainment, cultural and dining attractions. There will also be two residential properties and three hotels – a Ritz Carlton, Renaissance and another Hard Rock

THE LARGEST MINERAL SPRINGS IN ASIA Mission Hills Volcanic Mineral Springs extracts pure mineral water from 800 meters below ground, a magmatic source from geothermal activity over hundred centuries ago. The circular form of southern China’s traditional rural dwellings, known as Fujian Tulou inspired the architectural design of the Mineral Springs buildings. The bamboo and volcanic rock construction fosters a natural and relaxing mood, while a 500-meter-long bamboo walkway beautifully lined with lush green gardens surrounds the steaming springs area.

SPORTS RECREATIONS Mission Hills Resort also boasts an outdoor theme park and a wide variety of recreational facilities sprawled over acres of land. Mission Hills Blackstone Course

MISSION HILLS HAIKOU GOLF COURSES There is no doubt that Mission Hills Group has become the pre-eminent conglomerate in the Chinese sports, tourism, leisure and entertainment industry – an achievement that deserves all of the global recognition that is bestowed on it. BLACKSTONE This 7,808-yard core golf course covering 350 acres (2,125 Chinese Acres) weaves through a striking landscape of mature trees, lava rock, and expansive lakes and wetlands. Lava rock walls and village ruins created years ago remain as a testament to the site’s past. As a premiere tournament venue, the Blackstone Course provides extensive spectator mounding for fans and thrilling world-class golf capable of challenging the world’s greatest players. SANDBELT TRAILS Patterned after the exceptionally strong courses of the Australian Sandbelt Region, this 7,325-yard course features large bunkers dominated by high sand flashes and crisp, thick lips rising above fairway and green surfaces. Eucalyptus Trees evoke the Australian landscape while transitional bunkers blend into the native jungle, creating a natural and unique look over the courses gently rolling terrain.

THE VINTAGE Patterned after courses built at the turn of the century, this 7,297-yard course features a lay of the land routing with tree-lined fairways. The distinct, natural terrain is mixed with quirky features that utilize odd, sometimes geometric shapes, abrupt mounds, deep pot bunkers, square edges, and the occasional blind shot. Wicker basket pins and man-made features resemble the handwork of days past, evoking a classic charm. STEPPING STONE The first short par three course is a true pitch and putt course but with dramatic islands of turf surrounded by lava rock and large sand expanses. This course will play through, and seamlessly blend in with the native surrounds of black rock and thick vegetation. LAVA FIELDS While similar in many respects to the Tournament Course with its irregular lines of turf and wild bunkering, Lava Fields presents for less tree cover. There is a feel of expanse that creates a big look and the black rock and sand dominate the landscape like no other course in the world. At 7400 yards, it too is capable of hosting significant events. MEADOW LINKS Based upon the traditional US Open courses of the eastern United States, this layout features lay-of-the land sensibilities and somewhat geometric shapes in

Mission Hills Lava Fields Course

both bunkering and fairway lines. Distinctive features such as the fabled “Church Pew” bunkers make for a unique look where grass-faced bunkers and native grasses give the course an open meadow feel with occasional clusters of trees. Large greens create difficult putting opportunities. STONE QUARRY This course showcases all the wild-ride features associated with Pete Dye’s designs. Railroad tie sleepers, abrupt mounds, and moguls, long sandy waste bunkers, devilish sometimes small greens and railroad car bridges all create a distinct look and playing experience. DOUBLE PIN This collection of 18 par 3 holes incorporates a unique and distinct feature; two pins at each green. Greens are designed to offer two options; one easier and more assessable location and one much more difficult. An arboretum style landscape will provide an enjoyable atmosphere full of colourful trees and flowers, complementing the blue skies and clean air of Haikou. Players of all levels will be able to play the course to what best suits their mood or skill. Families and beginners to tour pros will all find a quick round to complement their days play or practice session.

THE PRESERVE With a strong emphasis on beautiful landscaping based upon a backbone of dense palm plantings, this user-friendly course plays off a more modern design. Sculpted bunkering punctuates wide fairways leading to greens complexes where perimeter mounding feeds into the putting surfaces with modern conviction. Vivid landscaping with abundance of flowering shrubs and ground covers make a dominant image on this course. Palm trees add a welcome relief from the sun. SHADOW DUNES Bringing sand to the city, this course offers a unique environment of towering sand dunes and native vegetation found along the vast beaches of Hainan Island. This course features large undulating contours that feed into some of the largest greens at the resort. Close green to tee connections make Shadow Dunes an exceptionally walkable course, making for a quick round

A Star is Reborn The eyes of the European golf industry are set to descend on Quinta do Lago in October, when it unveils its eagerly-awaited and totally revamped North Course – predicted to become one of the new stars of European golf. Redesigned by renowned American architect, Beau Welling, in close collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the new layout has been built to the highest specifications – with a €9.6m investment programme – and is in line to become the new No.1 course at the prestigious family resort. The North Course has been redeveloped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy. While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley have been keen to design a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, and a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities. Among the changes introduced on the 6,776-yard course – which has been closed since last December due to the massive rebuilding project – all greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and cart paths have been rebuilt using the latest state-of-the-art technology, with the four sets of tees introduced to accommodate players of all levels. While the routing of the course has not changed, Quinta do Lago has addressed golf course strategy to make the par-72 layout significantly more playable for all golfers, while still being a challenging test for the better players. Set among 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park, Quinta do Lago is one of the most highly regarded golf and residential developments in the Algarve since opening in 1972. Located just 15 minutes from Faro airport, the resort offers residents and guests an unparalleled location benefitting from a year-round temperate climate, a variety of lifestyle pursuits and a strong sense of community. Since its inception, Quinta do Lago has been at the forefront of European golf, with three 18-hole championship courses – Quinta do Lago North and South courses and the pretty-as-a-picture Laranjal course which was built in an old orange grove – matched by outstanding practice facilities at the Paul McGinley Academy and the new TaylorMade Fitting Centre, which gives golfers the chance to enjoy the ultimate club-fitting experience by providing them with the tools and techniques used on the professional tours. The hi-tech facilities here will leave you stunned. Away from the fairways, the resort’s extensive leisure facilities guarantee there is plenty to keep everyone occupied, with events, tennis, cycling and watersports and plenty to do for the kids, especially in the summer months, just some of the activities available. Quinta do Lago’s stunning location by the beach offers the perfect place to relax and unwind, while the resort’s wide array of restaurants, both formal and informal, take advantage of the fresh Mediterranean produce that the region has become famous for. If this destination was not top of your list of must-visit resorts before, it certainly should be now!
