A modern term for the vernacular type of architecture of Queensland, Australia. It is also found in the nor ther n par ts of the adjacent state of N e w S o u t h Wa l e s a n d shares many traits with architecture in other states of Australia but is distinct and unique. The form of the typical Queenslander style residence distinguishes Brisbane's suburbs from other capital cities. Queenslander displays an evolution of local style. The term is primarily applied to residential construction, although some commercial and other types of construction are identified as Queenslander.

With the underground columns, there is no need to do any earthworks.

The air flows underground can also cool the building.

Easier to raise/ lower the ground floor, even relocate

The youth hostel locates at Murwillumbah, where the climate is very hot and humid, especially during Summer time. That is why I study the architecture style named by "Queenslander" and the related corridor-space called "Varandah". Considering the large group of backpackers from Japan going there each year, I put some thought in what Japanese need. Also n summer, the wind is so strong that ordinary structure cannot load the force, which means it requires a deep thought in structure and construction method.

Murwillumbah has its own modulus of construction on wooden structure. In order to lower the cost of the construction, I have to learn the local construction modulus and modify the plan with the local traditions.

In summer, Murwillumbah is very hot and humid. And even get flooded easily because of the relatively location of the main river. So the main problem is the climate and I regard this as the start of my design.

SPACE SYNTAX ANALYSIS In order to understand the master work of SHINOHARA Kazuo logically, I use space syntax as an tool to analyze the organization of the spaces and functions in his house project and count the Total Depth of each Convex Space. And we can analyze the rationality of his major works. Because inside the Shino House the space is very closed, so we can ignore the influence of the glass and do the topology analysis. Followings are the results of analysis of SHINOHARA Kazuo's plans.

INTRODUCTION

ENCOUNTER

The aim of this project is choosing one of your favorite masters and design a Master Workshop for him or her. During the time when I was doing this design , I got to know more about Kazuo Shinohara . After I did all I could to discover his personal experience and understand his works of different period , I found I was deeply moved by Kazuo Shinohara and his works .Although he has been gone , I can still feel the power he left in architecture and in this whole world .So here , I have one sentenceto Kazuo Shinohara :Thank you for leading me into a brand new world. No matter what kind of person i will become, you will always have your influence on me. Thank you...

From the result, we can see that in the project of the Shino House, the centre space is the most accessible among all the spaces.

The Uncomplete House is an unfinished project. From my perspective, "unfinish" means architect can still add new functions or spaces for this house.

The House in HigashiTamagawa seems to have no specific central box. But we can still see the high integration of the central space.

VISUAL CONTROL & VISUAL CLUSTERING COEFFICIENT ANALYSIS

The site locates on an axis of the village central square and the village kindergarden.

Visual Clustering Coefficient

analysis focuses on the ability of the space in create a sense of enclosure. Apart from some inner spaces, we can see that, the VCC of three in-between spaces is not that high, which means, the space in visual aspects is different from SHINOHARA's project. I lower the VCC initiatively to make it a special space for encounters.

Visual Control analysis focuses on the space's degree of control over other spaces in visual aspect. The color gets whiter, the ability of control is more limited. Consider walking in such places, we might feel unsafe, because some one may stand at an invisible corner watching you. The three boxes are such places.

Raise the site up for 2 floors, and create a complete box.

The left box: From the VCC analysis, we can see that the box has an limited influence on eclosing the space. People from other places may easily spot it.

conference room

Considering there exist two groups of people, I split the box into two smaller ones.

model room

Analyze the inner relationship of each group and subdivide them again.

The central box: From the VCC analysis, we can see that the box has the most limited influence on eclosing the space. People inside may show weak sense of direction.

The right box: From the VCC analysis, we can see that there are more white area compared with the left box, which meets the intention of making it a more private place.

VILLAGE YARD

INTRODUCTION The project is located near Hehua Garden. It's a village inside the city, whose 80% population are poor-educated workers from other cities. There are a few old people and children. Opposite the site is the Zhejiang merchants wealth centre, a combination of the traditional strong Zhejiang enterprise and innovative industry based on internet. People work here are highly educated and well-paid. Therefore there's a great contrast between the village and the outside, which leads to a fierce conflict between different social classes. The original mission was to design a community sports centre, in which there exited a wall between the village and the sports centre. As a architect with strong social awareness, I reoriented the project and designed a lively garden by applying complementarily functioned relations. It has a profound benefit for not only the people inside the village but also the people who are closely related to the development of the village. This is my consideration of the product of the fast urbanization in China-the external populations.

It is inconvenient for the migrant workers to do some shopping. This block needs a shopping mall.

The city park locates in the north of the site. I create a slope to invite wandering people.

Make the most of the top of the shopping mall and create a running track for the sports lovers.

The business centre locates across the road. The newly born comany needs advertising.

Migrants come and leave almost every week, I create a mini-complex for the new settler.

Those migrant workers need a cheap place to do exercises, which is also multifunctional.

METHOD Hybrid is originially a genetic concept:offspring of two animal or plants of different races, breeds, varieties, species, or genera. In the field of architecture, the introduction of the term“hybridity”refers to a condition that multiple functions are connected through the regime of complex and form a brand new whole.

Outside of the Hehuayuan shows features of highlyurbanized modern city.

It is designed to serve the migrant people, and it should be conspicuous.

FOUR MAIN FUNCTIONS

The courtyard needs a wall to prevent the busy scene from interupt the silence in the north.

FARMERS MARKET & SPORTS CENTER This building has two main functions: one is sports center and the oWther is the farmers'market. I make use of the top of the farmers' market to build a court. The structure is portal frame, which is easy to be disassembled and cheap.

THE SHOPPING YARD The building consists of shopping mall, running track and the yard. The function shopping mall is created to meet the needs for the migrants, because they do not have a car to move to the far-away shopping center. The yard is enclosed by the running track, aiming to offer an free place for the migrants to play sports.

These are photos taken by a journalist named Jonah Kessel. The figures in each photo are the owner or the owner's family of a Chinese carteen. They came into being because of the urbanlization, and now they are disapearing also because of the overspeed of urbanlization. This is a business model feasible for people with low incomes, which is especially suitable for the urban village in China. So with the space offered by the billboard, I intend to offer cheap places for the migrants to do their own small business.

FACADE BILLBOARD & STREETSTALL BUSINESS

The billboard is made for the cross-road Zhejiang Wealth Center.which has many advertising company. The additional space can be used for the street stall business and exibitions.

By combining the function of the billboead (advertising industry), we can create an additional value----the space, for the migrant workers. This is also a recall of the memories of the history of Chinese before the boom of urbanlization. The low living costs of the migrants workers in Hehua Yuan will lead to low prices of the products, which will be a great apeal to people living around here. I think this is a good way for different classes gather together.

PHOTOGRAPH

ORGANIZATION OF THE STREET STALL BUSINESS Here I use topology as a way to discuss different posibilities of the organizations of those street stall business within a unit of the billboard structure. We can also see it as the posibilities of the vertical circulations.
