20 YEARS… WHAT A RIDE

THANK YOU!

YOU DID IT!

There are not many events out there that can celebrate the 20 year milestone. Way back in the beginning, we had a ragtag team of staff, a small number of competitors and a vague idea of what we were doing. The town of Canmore was younger then. Some supportive people in the community knew that the town needed something to attract people during the summer months. 24 Hours of Adrenalin was that something. How we’ve been able to grow the event into what it is today is amazing, and we only have you to thank. We’ve learned a lot over the years; have had to put up with hard times and easy times. You never can tell what to expect in this business. This kind of event would not be possible without the amazing volunteers, staff and, most importantly, the riders. The fact that many of you keep coming out year after year shows what an amazing bunch of people you truly are. It began raining a few days before the event. On Friday, It was still raining when we opened the gates, and continued to do so until the last rider crossed the finish line Sunday afternoon. Even though the trail had the consistency of peanut butter, we still managed to pull off an amazing event. Riding in the rain is not easy. Many people choose to hang out inside until the weather clears, watching videos online or doing some longawaited maintenance on their trail bike. For you, however, you made a different choice. From the le mans start until the last hour, you were out in the mud, plastering your faces, your clothes, your bikes, but never your spirits in the muck.

This issue of adrenalin24 is a thank you to you for helping us with an amazing 20 year anniversary. Take a look through the pages of this issue. We tried to capture some of the most outstanding images of our 20th edition. We want to focus our attention on those who made this event possible: our crew, our sponsors, our volunteers and most importantly, our participants. This is for you, enjoy it. We’re already looking forward to next year. Remember to sign up early and come back for another year of 24 Hours of Adrenalin. You Only Turn 20 Once. My 24 Hours of Adrenalin

It was harder than what I expected. As the rain continued into the third day, my already tired limbs were starting to go numb. 18 |

I settled into a permanent state of sogginess and prepared for what would be the longest day yet. After twelve hour days from Wednesday til Friday, Saturday would be 22 hours, and Sunday another 10 or so. But that was the way it went at the 24 Hours of Adrenalin. During the first 24 Hours of Adrenalin (then called 24 Hours of Indiglo) I was just a toddler. I think I got my first bike that year. Over the years, the event has changed dramatically from a grassroots mountain bike event in Ontario to the event it is today. I have changed a lot in those years as well, going from a 3 year old who could barely speak to a cyclist, mechanic, photographer and writer.

A lot has changed in the bike world as well. A light mountain bike was 25lbs in the 90’s, suspension was barely getting its start, bars were narrow, stems long and 26” wheels were the only option. Now we’ve got cross-country bikes coming in under 20 lbs, 800mm wide bars, short stems and enough wheel sizes to confuse anyone. We’ve also gone from mountain biking being a weirdo’s sport to a world-class discipline. I would say that the last twenty years have been good to us. We’ve all grown and changed with the times, we’ve learned to adapt to new technology, while staying true to our roots. I can’t wait to see where the next 20 takes us.
