simply spellbinding / Kassassin Street is back on the block once again, with their brand new EP “MolokoVellocet”. The five-piece electronic band comprised of Rowan Bastable, Nathan Hill, Ryan Hill, Andy Hurst, and Tom Wells shift into high gear once more, to create what can only be described as an undeniablyexplosive work of art. This time around, they have also borrowed the talents of South Korean electronic music producer Juno Lee, better known as Postino, to mix and master their tracks. That’s just the icing on the cake. The three-song collection sports a distinct hallucinogenic sound that will have you mesmerized the moment you start listening. Kassassin Street is clearly trying to carve a niche into the psychedelic scene, and have no doubt, they are succeeding at it.

“Centre Straight Atom” showcases the band’s gift for making a beat contagious.

4

www.24ourmusic.net

Their first track “Play Dead”, defines their sound. At first, it plays like an experiment – a mish-mash of unrelated lyrics and pulsating vibration that purposely tries to puzzle you. But the drums finally kick in, allowing the rhythm and atmosphere to solidify, and give way to the compelling vocals. Before long, you are drowning in a pool of intoxicating sound. All due to these types of tracks that chew up virgin eardrums and swallow them whole. The next track is wilder, with a hell of alot more edge. “Centre Straight Atom” showcases the band’s gift for making a beat contagious, but maintaining their mesmerizing, distinct style throughout.

The momentary lapses don’t prepare you for the absolutely volatile guitar riffs that follow. If you want to take note of the band’s technical skills – definitely check this track. The mix does an impeccable job of bringing out each instrumental and manipulating the vocals to complement the song to a “T”. The final hit is both parallel and unique from their previous creations.“Talk in Riddles” is an ingenious experiment, with the occasional reference to the sound we make. The track is not made for you to fully comprehend, but rather to listen and get tangled up in; to be led astray in every direction the song decides to slither and shift. It is hard not to recognize true psychedelic, electronic prodigies when you hear them. If the genre needed a mascot, this song could be it – aptly drawing elements from both styles, and deploying them magnificently. Whenever you need to be hypnotized, to just float away and get lost in good music, you can definitely rely on Kassassin Street. Their tracks have the beguiling sound that simply draws you in, and implores you to listen on. The Portsmouth based band has definitely come a long way, and it would not be a longshot to say that they can only go up from here. MolokoVellocet is worth every minute you spend listening to it on replay.

some people throw the word avant-garde around nowadays like they actually know what it means.

ain’t no love/ Truly, Avant-Garde - EP Review Ain’t No Love is the pure embodiment of avant-garde in an extremely saturated hip-hop and electronic scene. Currently based in Toronto, the foursome of Liam Clarke, Roly “1990” Broere, Elias “Beanz” McBean, and Saidah Conrad, are beginning to make their mark in a very exciting way. Their style which teeters between hip-hop and electronic just does not fit in any established genre, resulting in the divergent label of “Renegade Pop”. A label which appropriately puts their music in perspective.

6

www.24ourmusic.net

It implies innovation and creativity and should only be used in reference to such. Their self-titled debut EP “Ain’t No Love” showcases this eccentric technique with songs that are so distinctive, so unique from each other, that the fact that they were all packed into just one album is simply astonishing. The first track “Shine” is a fast-paced, yet dreamy track, with rousing rap lyrics and a chorus that simply mesmerizes the listener. It starts off slow, almost jazzy (which simply sounds great), but quickly introduces the bass and beat to make the presence of their MC’s known in a very powerful fashion. Everything simply works in the way the song transitions from multiple elements that the quartet throws in, whether its the rap, the compelling vocals, or the prominent electronic boom in the background --

they simply have everything clicking on all cylinders. The next tracks, “Step Hard Remix” and “Love Me Lots”, take a different route in the way they start high-energy and just never let up. Even the choruses and hooks maintain the overall flow of the intros -- the feeling is similar to an absurd rollercoaster drop. You will definitely be bobbing your head to the contagious lyrics and beats, a testament to their talent and ability to step hard, because they have carved out their own niche, and sound so comfortable huddled up inside it. Another definite hit is “Crucified”, which immediately spirits you away into a somewhat mournful www.24ourmusic.net

the feeling is similar to an absurd rollercoaster drop. You will definitely be bobbing your head to the contagious lyrics and beats.

, somber place. Using a terrifyingly bittersweet instrumental, and Conrad’s gorgeous vocals, the track creates another world within their album. This is a great showcase of what Ain’t No Love’s lead singer is capable of, and its not difficult to see that their future is bright -- especially with her at the helm. That’s not to say that the MC’s and the mixing weren’t spectacular as well, but rather that they aptly complemented the superb singing that came out in this track. “Crash & Burn” is definitely closer to the electronic side of the spectrum, demonstrating their proficiency with that area of music as well. Hip-hop is still noticeable nonetheless, the raps and flow just brisker and quickly implemented to allow the beat and mastering to shine through. Definitely more suited for dance floor speakers; it is a track that can allow Ain’t No Love entry into coveted dance hall playlists and respected DJ track mixes.

8

www.24ourmusic.net

The EP’s final song is “Renegade”, which sadly falls a bit short of the exhilaration and intrigue that surrounds the other tracks. But it doesn’t fail to deliver at all. In fact, it demonstrates that even their most humdrum song can still be more than stimulating. Its something that many artists and bands wish they had the ability to do. Ain’t No Love and their debut EP definitely does not disappoint, and it would be advisable to stop by their shows or take a good long listen to their music if you have the time. It is always good to expose yourself to something you’ve never heard before -- especially if that something is this good. Give true innovation and creativity a chance!

mark instinct/ Mark attacks our eardrums and slams that sensitive spot in the back of our necks full force, aggressively tossing us around with the release of his newest EP Suicide Pill. Teamed up with Adrora, the two bass music producers show off their skills drawing us into their dark and twisted swagg, leaving us wanting more after every track. The ”suicide pill” is just the beginning of the descent into a distorted world of darkness and warped imagination , opening up the atmosphere and raising our spirits and psyche with a high pitched wail before throwing us straight into a full fledged drum and bass rhythm, freestyle vocals and dirty drops, before drop stepping us into oblivion.

After the pill drop, friction rubs us the right way with dark grinding dark electric transformer sounding synths waging us at a train wreak tempo. The deafening bass not letting us go for a second, except for a small pause for that breather, so smooth, you just let go and flowing with the rhythm as it progressively heating up darkening, and intensifies before cooling down and ending abruptly leaving us atop a cloud you can’t help but stop and say ”wait, I want more” Already in Mark’s grasp, Pull tightens his clutch on us and heaves us around, toying with bass levels (and our minds), and creeping in with harmonic, sinister synths, smooth drops, and a sustaining rhythm leaving us breathless till the end.

The chilling start to Space drill is especially satisfying before he literally drills us the floor, swaying us side to to side, all senses heightened , raising the room midway through with high pitched softened harmonies, increasing the tempo but still keeping us drilled to the ground, zombie swaying to Mark’s swagg, and leaving us on a heightened prolonging note, just staring….

inside the capital/ Our staff writer, Karl Nicolas, recently had a chance to talk to and interview Pierce White-Joncas, one of the two visionary entrepreneurs in charge over at Capital Boom Records. 24OurMusic First off, can you tell us about how you and Shawn “JC BooM!” Dauphin got everything off the ground? What inspired you? Pierce White-Joncas It was definitely a combination of resources we already had and ideas that needed to be worked out on paper that got us off the ground. JC’s extensive network of producers, DJ’s, label owners and distributors as well as his knowledge of music was very important in getting us to where we are today. Along with my corporate knowledge, and how to effectively manage a business, it almost made sense to be partners. 10 www.24ourmusic.net

For JC, being in the music industry for some time at this point, inspiration came from wanting a record label that was more personal, willing to take the time and provide constructive feedback, and also wouldn’t be clouded with a big ego. For myself, being introduced into a new industry, a new genre of music even, it was a new challenge for me, one I was willing to take knowing I had all the knowledge I’d need right next to me. For both of us, we wanted to do something different. We wanted to be able to provide a different choice for those producers looking to become the next Excision or Avicii. 24OurMusic Awesome! Do you have any specific goals that you would like to see your label achieve in the near future?

Pierce White-Joncas We are actually launching a new monthly event in Ottawa starting January 2013, so that is something we’re both very excited for. We’ve got some pretty good bookings lined up, so we’re optimistic it will be received well by the EDM scene here. In terms of the production side of the business, we’re hoping 2013 will be the year we start collaborating with big name artists, in order to provide incentive for to those new artists to sign their tracks with Capital Boom. I’d also say broadening our scope in the type of EDM we release. We’d like to see a few more Electro-style releases, to compliment the bass heavy Dubstep we’ve been pumping out. 24OurMusic Interesting, how do you usually go about marketing Capital Boom to prospective listeners and new artists? And is it a very strict process by which you decide which of the the talent you bring on board? Pierce White-Joncas Marketing, it’s like being stuck in between a rock and a hard place. As you may or may not know, with a record label of our nature, marketing is slightly difficult. In terms of internet, there are the obvious platforms, being Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Youtube and Soundcloud. The not so obvious platforms to the general public would be the blogs or magazines, such as yourselves. Marketing via the Internet is frustrating because sometimes the messages you want to convey don’t get through to the targeted audience. That’s where the events come into play. We know that the majority of the people attending the events are the targeted audience. Stickers, hand bills, even just talking to the fans, spreading the word, we exhaust every available avenue whenever they present themselves.

24OurMusic Sounds incredibly tough, but its great that you have tried, and are trying, new methods to get the word out! Pierce White-Joncas And the process is not so strict, no. There is a small criteria for producers who wish to submit their tracks. That being said, we do look for a high standard of production quality in the tracks being sold to us. Meeting the criteria is not necessarily getting a contract. 24OurMusic Excellent, I hope that the aspiring artists take note! Would you say that you are happy with the success of your recent releases? 24OurMusic has covered your “Born Killer” EP, and we assume that you take a lot of factors into consideration before basing putting out such albums? Pierce White-Joncas We’re decently happy considering we’ve had fierce competition from the industry leaders on recent release dates. The Born Killer Remixed EP is one of those albums where each artist provided top notch production on their track, inspired from the solid production quality of the Born Killer EP released a year prior. That is the most important factor for us. If the produc-

tion style and quality gets better and better, we know that we will have a successful release. It’s also pairing the right artists together for releases, another challenge in it’s own, because of how unique the industry is. 24OurMusic Great! One more question. What are you most excited about this coming year? Does the label feel good about 2013 and the state of the industry? Pierce White-Joncas We are definitely excited about the launch of the new monthly, Flex Fridays, and all the artists we’re going to have roll through. The industry is starting to build up, so we feel very confident. With the evolution of new sub genres and old sub genres making their come back, you never know what can happen, but that’s why it’s a good industry to be a part of. There are definitely a lot of challenges for Capital Boom in the months to come, but we’re ready to bring the fans everything they expect and more. 24OurMusic Awesome! Thank you so much for your time. We wish Capital Boom all the best in your future endeavors!

chris giannini/ Redefining “Soulful” from his new album “It’s Me” Every so often, there is an artist that emerges out of throngs of aspiring hopefuls and breathes some much needed fresh air into a saturated genre. This time, Chris Giannini defies the odds, and reveals himself to be that breath of fresh air, with his album “If it’s me”. The 22-year-old singer songwriter from Montreal has begun his climb up the rungs of the pop rock genre, and has created quite a gigantic splash with his arrival. The delightful expedition he takes us on begins with this debut album, and if the quality of music he will be putting out in the future is anywhere near this level – then we are in for a hell of a ride. “If it’s me” contains ten memorable tracks that resonate with the lighthearted, soulful music of times past, but stays true to the upbeat, catchy tunes currently dominating the charts. Needless to say, his songs will most likely appeal to most music enthusiasts, just because of the obvious talent oozing out of each guitar rift, every vocal high-and-low, and every single head-bobbing beat. His song “One Way Ticket to Nowhere” sets the stage for the album, an upbeat track about a happy-go-lucky traveler with a one way ticket to nowhere. This lucky traveler is you, as Giannini uses his soulful vocals and exceptional guitar riffs to whisk you off to a land far, far away. The blissful vibe makes the song unconditionally contagious, and it’s not difficult to find yourself tapping your feet and singing along to the catchy track within seconds. You can be guaranteed that “nowhere” is the last place you’ll be going as you venture deeper into the album. Afterwards, the talented young singer mesmerizes and draws you in with “Leave the Past Behind”. It kicks off with light acoustic melodies and gorgeous lyrics that allow your emotions to completely take the wheel.

Without knowing it, you are in the wilderness, leaving behind the conventions you know – and just listening to the inspiring message that Chris infuses within his masterpiece. This goes hand-in-hand beautifully with his next track “Moving Forward”, which acts almost like a continuation, guiding you further along the road. The same soulful voice keeps you close and ensnared in the beautiful ballad he performs. He changes gears in “The Missing Part”, a truly touching track that slows the world down a step. Here, Chris shows that there is more to the album than just rainbows – there are also the butterflies. It’s a graceful song, with an “airy” feel that pulls at your heartstrings via a remorseful violin and beautiful lyricism. If ever you need a song to stir your imagination and keep you teeteringon the edge of emotion, this is the tune to play out of your speakers.

on’t be afraid to take a listen to the album. You are guaranteed to delight in

Like a storm, it starts off slow lulling you into a false sense of security with a slow melody and heavy-eyed vocals.

All the songs on the album are definitely worthy of praise and hours of undeterred listening, but the flagship track “If it’s me” just takes the cake. Like a storm, it starts off slow – lulling you into a false sense of security with a slow melody and heavy-eyed vocals. But when you least expect it, there is an explosion of bass and powerful guitar riffs that just shatter the tranquility into pieces. Itjust does not get any better than that. How can one not be impressed by the effortless shift in mood and technical grace Giannini displays throughout this song? Not only can you fall in love with this type of tempest, you can get lost in the eye of the storm – an unbelievable frenzied mix of soulful lyricism and charming composition. Chris Giannini undoubtedly delivers an astounding performance within his album “If it’s me” that reinvigorates the appeal of the undiscovered artist. He conveys a refreshing pop rock sound to today’s saturated music scene, cleaning up the airwaves, and bringing hope back to the eager listeners. In case you ever need to get away from the all the rough-n-tumble in your life, www.24ourmusic.net

5 ways to enjoy music/ Sometimes you just need a song to kick back and relax to.

1 Open your f!#king mind! First, I want you to forget that you have a favourite genre. Forget the notion that you are a hip-hopper, a dubstepper, a rocker, a soulful-crooner or a lyrical treasure hunter. Reduce this all to the notion that you simply like “good music.” “Good”, of course, is an ambiguous term, but it’s important to think about because all the songs you play on your iPod have something good about them. This goodness can be attributed to it being catchy as hell, a track that evokes some amazing memory, or simply a song that just makes you feel like a deity. Think of songs as complementary soundtracks to your life, rather than things you listen to because they adhere to a single genre of music you are comfortable with.

2 Assess how the song Does it make you imagine a serene waterfall crashing into a flowing river in a snowy Canadian landscape? Does it evoke the image of a boy and a girl sharing their first tender kiss amidst the night lights of Toronto? Does it illustrate 14 www.24ourmusic.net

the gruesome image of an alien firing a Gatling laser into a charging brigade of humans as they attempt to take back the White House? Remember that songs, lyrical or not, are pieces of art; art is a reflection of the human being, and human beings have crazy imaginations that they infuse into their art. Whatever image you conjure up in your mind as you listen allows you to relate to the narrator of the song, and helps you gravitate towards the work of the artist. In conjunction with the first tip, it may even help you to discover a musical artist you never thought would ever touch the archives of your iTunes library.

3 RainyMood it There is a reason why soundtracks are so important in movies; the right piece of music can help set the tone for the scene and create an atmosphere that really pulls the audience into the realm of the creator. RainyMood is an excellent website that can help turn your epic songs into cinematic amazingness. You don’t even have to limit yourself to RainyMood - listen to a symphony while you trudge through an epic blizzard, or a sad and emotional ballad as you stare out the bus window during a gloomy and rainy day. When you begin

4 Serenade someone with it Music is art, and art connects humans together. Concerts are a testament to this; you don’t simply go to a show to support or ogle a really talented or attractive artist. Humans come together for concerts to celebrate the unity of emotion and artistic freedom. A united thrashing of heads during a wild guitar solo or the collective tears of an audience during an emotionally charged ballad is what allows humans to relate

5 Have fun with it Music does not have to be lyrically profound or emotional. Sometimes you just need a song to kick back and relax to. Sometimes you need that really stupid and catchy song to sing along with and forget about the world. Don’t let music become something that needs to be a certain way; let it live, and it will live harmoniously with you.

the forest floors/ Hailing from Portsmouth, UK, Jamie, Micheal and Callum began gathering soil for the forest at the ripe age of 17, in the summer of 2010, jamming and recording demos in Jamie’s bedroom, throwing their music out to anyone with ears. After a year of gigs they planted themselves a new guitarist, Ryan Wilson, making a strong impact to the Forest Floors, slightly changing their sound and lifting their stage performance up another notch. The Forest Floors recorded their first single Capture a Spark with Mono Twin Records produced by Jason Thomas, gaining recognition with radio play on various stations around the south, as well as being available on iTunes and Last FM among others. Their fan base has been growing steadily over the years and they’ve

enjoyed support slots alongside bands such as One Night Only and General Fiasco. Their latest single Pinches and Bites recorded with The Animal Farm, an artist management and music production company in London, is more of a roundhouse punch and a mouthful of alternative somewhere between rock, indie and punk.

Enter The Forest – and get yourself rooted into a flourishing alternative rock indie quartet from the UK

Driving guitar, nice rhythmic bass, catchy riffs, fast paced rock’n drums and passionate sing along vocals – The Forest Floor keeps you deep rooted and tosses you exactly the way you’d expect from growing rockers; full and strong as a full grown Acacia! capital boom records/ Sometimes you need a little boom to get the party started!

16 www.24ourmusic.net

Capital Boom Records, producing since May of 2011, is a digital record label hailing from Ottawa, Canada. Founded by DJ JC BooM (Shawn Dauphin) and Pierce White-Joncas, what began as a small label dedicated to digital music sales is now a label boasting a roster prolific with Canadian artists (such as 1up from British Columbia, Toronto’s LAIRDRIVER, and Ottawa’s CTak) with a swirl of international members such as Anarchy (Australia), Cyran (USA), and Real Mad (South Africa). Capital Boom Records can be found in the Ottawa night scene, a testament to the waves of energy they are sending through the world electronic dance music.

They have also teamed up with music festivals, performing so far at the Valhalla Sound Circus in Montreal and the Escapade Music Festival for Canada Day in Ottawa. Capital Boom Records’ Facebook page cites Bold Equation’s “Born Killer” as the track that thrust the label into the EDM spotlight. Allow this track to be a reflection of the musical energy that the label promises its audience: the listener of “Born Killer” is thrust almost immediately into a dizzying array of blips, followed by a recovery time within a strange realm of wobbly bass before being thrown back into electronic chaos.

Imagine what happens then when this track is cut up and spliced with Skrillex’s remix of “Cinema;” in Bold Equation’s mashup entitled “Killer Cinema,” the listener is serenaded by Gary Go’s smooth vocals as he tells her that she is wondrous like a cinema. The cinema screen then lifts, and behind this veil is a two-pronged machine gun attack as Skrillex and Bold Equation wallop the listener with a wonderful spray of “Born Killer” and Skrillex-esque synths. For a double dose of Capital Boom Records, 1up’s remix of “Born Killer” should also be able to quench your thirst for dirty synthesizers. Capital Boom Records should stand proud for holding such talented Canadian artists. International artists such as Johannesburg’s Real Mad exemplify the talent that Capital Boom Records wields as it blazes its trails across the globe. “Bombs Away” is a track that drops into an eerie silence, emulating the strange shock of an exploding bomb before going into a full blown eruption of synthesizer. America’s Cyran meanwhile wields a deadly, sinister track by the name of “Alien Hunting,” narrating the scene of a UFO crash followed by a violent storm of ray guns and Gatling lasers. On the other hand, Australia’s Anarchy boasts a lethal track called “Undercover” that sends the listener through a muffled and filtered electronic world complemented by a symphony of strings before falling through a fissure into an underworld of filthy bass. Capital Boom’s reach across the globe has brought back incredible artists into the eyes of the electronic dance scene. Capital Boom Records and their artists can be found on Beatport, JunoDownload, Soundcloud, MySpace, Facebook, and TheDJList, as well as their website CapitalBoomRecords.com. They are also found on the Galaxie music channels on digital cable and satellite providers.

The ever-so talented founder of MakeWay Studios, Brandon Hecht (aka BuDz) is a registered sound engineer who “records, mixes, and masters from his own studio” (as stated on his bio page on MakeWayStudios. com.) Hailing from Montreal, BuDz is a graduate of L’Institut d’enregistrement du Canada (Recording Arts Canada), dedicated to managing and promoting the members of the Montreal music scene and scoring them events, venues, and shows. We see this dedication with his latest mix tape Pure Zest. Highlights of Pure Zest include track 2’s “Let Me Know Your Game” featuring Renata. The two artists cleverly collaborate to evoke the image of playing and gaming, summarized by the line in the chorus “Let me play your game / boy, let me know your game.” Quisque vitae rutrum mi.

18 www.24ourmusic.net

This cheeky exchange of lyrics between the song’s male and female poet-speakers is then completed by a druminfused,bluesy- electricguitar track. We then have the monstrous head bobber “Ride With Me” featuring Mac Vybz, a hi-hat woven track that beats beneath the verses of Mac Vybz and BuDz as they serenade the “billion dollar girl,” followed by a collaboration with Big H in the mellow, get-highto-this bass-resonating ambience of “Eyes Low.” The mix tape then drops hard on track 7, featuring verses with 7vn, Big H, and IzzO as they spit over an infectious and sinister snare-ridden clapper called “Set The Club On Fire.” Beginning with the line “I set the club on fire / and baby you should too,” expect to get close and personal with “pretty ladies everywhere” as DJ’s drop this catchy night club stomper.

Track 13 features bookworm. and begins with an introduction of marijuana and weed, an obvious invitation to the listener to light up and blaze to this synthesized head bobber entitled “Funk.” Another snare and bassdrum stomper, this saucy ode to the ganja, complete with a malevolent instrumental and witty lines playing on the language of marijuana (the journalist that speaks throughout the track at about one minute talks about “the blunt truth,” followed by the ingenious line “who’s gonna roll that blunt?”) is sure to channel “that funk.
