2508 LETTERS I was drenched when the southerly change came through Sydney and had been in these clothes for hours. The wind was strong and freezing cold when I alighted at Stanwell Park Station. The walk to my place would have resulted in illness which was averted due to this lady’s generosity and consideration. Thank you again. Toni Riddell

john and fay ireland leaving town

After 40 wonderful years, Fay and John Ireland are seeking a seachange and leaving Helensburgh for Thirroul. Over 40 years we have formed lasting friendships in Helensburgh and will carry fond memories for the rest of our lives. Particular mention must go to our wonderful neighbours. We have not had a cross word in 40 years. Also, a special thank-you to the parents and children we came into contact in Fay’s child-minding years. You kept us young. As the song goes – this is just adiós and not goodbye. We have family in the Burgh and plan to visit regularly. Please say hello when we do. Good health and good luck to everyone. Fay and John Helensburgh Fay and John win our Letter of the Month! The prize is a $50 Tradies Gift Card (24 Boomerang Street, 4294 1122).

Cheers to the Good Samaritan who cut our front lawn for us whilst we were on holiday. Your good deed was very much appreciated. To arrive home after a long drive on a hot day and find this lovely surprise was wonderful. Chivalry is alive in the Burgh. A big thank you from Jenny and John Moss.

THANKS FOR THE LIFT

Thank you very much to the lady in a fourwheel-drive who picked me up from Stanwell Park station on Sunday evening, 1st March 2015. She was picking up four young ladies who had been in Sydney for a rock concert.

On March 3, the Helensburgh Girls’ Brigade hosted a hairraising event. After raising more than $600 for the Leukemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave, our Captain Roslyn Sherratt (pictured), stepped up to the challenge of a no.2 haircut. Two people shaved their hair and everyone enjoyed having their hair temporarily coloured with hair chalks. The Helensburgh Girls’ Brigade would like to recognise the encouragement and support of the Helensburgh and Stanwell Park Anglican Church. We would also like to thank the Leukemia Foundation, and our friends and families for their willingness to participate and sponsor our team. Special thanks to hairdresser Emma Clayton for donating her time and skill. From Bec Rook, via email

farewell louis Young filmmaker Louis Vanderstappen died in a tragic accident at a waterhole in northern NSW in late December. On March 8, his friends and family gathered to spread his ashes off Coalcliff Beach. By Angus MacKay A day to remember, celebrate and reflect on the man who was, is and forever will be Louis Vanderstappen. They say legends never die, and boy did this day reiterate that saying in our minds. Without doubt, Louis was there in full spirit. He was there in everyone’s hearts and minds, dancing along with us to every song and, as usual, was the reason for every smile in the room. The day itself was remarkable. We started off with the traditional Hawaiian paddle out to send off a lost one and let their soul rest easy in the peace of the ocean. It was the most emotional, cheerful and spiritual thing I personally have ever witnessed.

2508

2508p006-7_NEWS_APRIL_2015.indd 6

As Louis’ family spread the ashes onto the water surrounded by 200-plus friends and loved ones, there was an air of love encapsulating everyone out there as they remembered the most charismatic man we ever knew. Following the paddle out, we celebrated in classic Lou form as the Bombie Bar at the Coalcliff Surf Life Saving Club opened its doors and let the good times roll. Kicking off the afternoon was Elemont (Liam Radford), who got the crowd started with some awesome hiphop songs. Following him was local band D’Luna who threw down an amazing set. To finish off the afternoon, we had two of Louis’ good friends and fellow vinyl lovers Kade (Sukdry) Drury and Jack (Dunz) Danzey spin some of his favourite songs on wax and set the dance floor alight. The night rolled on as well as the good times. Special thanks to Rob Deacon and Pete Jordan who helped get the gig going at the Bombie Bar; Kate Brown for the flowers and decoration on Lou’s board and many others. We love and miss you, mate. That one was for you. Rest easy brother. 2508

anzac legacy By Heather Smith Stanwell Park teenager Jai Thompson’s greatgrandfather was a liar. During the First World War, Sidney J. Lalor put up his age to enlist. By the time WWII came around, his commitment was just as strong, but this time he had to lower his age to be accepted. Jai learnt more about his two greatgrandfathers on his father’s side as part of his successful application for the inaugural Illawarra Centenary of Anzac scholarships. The $15,000 scholarship over three years will go towards Jai’s Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Wollongong, where he will major in land and heritage management. Jai, 18, said the war diary of his greatgrandfather on his grandfather’s side is to be donated to the War Memorial in Canberra. “Sydney Thomas Thompson served in WWI in the 12th Light Horse Regiment,” Jai said. “He

kept a daily diary during 1918 and it includes the battles, food, cholera, capturing Turkish soldiers in their thousands, mateship and bayonet practice. “The diary is priceless to our family.” Illawarra Centenary of Anzac Committee chairman Peter Poulton said scholarship applicants had to be direct descendants of Australian or New Zealand veterans. “That’s to keep the scholarship in the tradition of Anzac,” he said. 2508

Gallipoli: a brief history Gallipoli took a heavy toll on our small community, writes Jenny Donohoe. The 40-ship convoy of ANZAC troops departed from Albany, Western Australia, on 1 November 1914 and was redirected to Egypt when Turkey entered the war to protect the important Suez Canal. The stoppingoff points were Giza, Cairo and Alexandria and by the end of 1914, the Australian Camp at Mena, near Cairo, was home to nearly 20,000 men of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and some 300 members of the Australian Army Nursing Service. To all and sundry this was to them a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, being in Egypt visiting the nearby Pyramids and Sphinx. Then, in April 1915, the soldiers departed for the Dardanelles Campaign in Turkey. Nurses also left to work aboard ships and hospitals on the Greek islands of Imbros and Lemnos. On 25 April 1915, the AIF landed at Gallipoli with troops from New Zealand, Britain and

France. Memories of Cairo were replaced by the harsh reality of war. The Gallipoli campaign ended with the evacuation of troops on 19 and 20 December 1915 under cover of darkness. The ANZACs after Gallipoli fought campaigns on the Western Front and in the Middle East. christian papas This Helensburgh teen has taken a huge step in what will likely be a long and illustrious sporting career, 2508 reports. Christian Papas is a typical 14-year-old lad. He’s quiet, a bit cheeky and sometimes intent on simply having fun, no matter what the consequences. Case in point: soon after 2508 met Christian for the cover photo-shoot, we found out that he had busted himself up in a skateboarding stack. His injuries weren’t too serious, which is lucky because, as well as tackling school and facing the myriad positives and pitfalls of being a teen in the 21st century,

2508

2508p010-11_COVER FEATURE_APRIL_2015.indd 10

Christian is in hot pursuit of soccer success: big-match results, professional contracts and, ultimately, Socceroo glory. He’s dedicated, disciplined and already working hard to achieve his goals. Anyway, we’ll let him tell his story. Christian kindly took time out of his busy school-and-training schedule to answer a few of our questions. Which club have you signed with and why is it such a big deal? I have signed with St George FC Premier League 1. This is such a big deal for me because of my goals and dreams with football.

10

24/03/2015 7:44 am

2508 REPORT This year is a great opportunity to be in the premier league as this year Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers are scouting for their academy, which will commence next year. To get into this academy would be a huge dream of mine as it opens the pathway to become a professional footballer and then hopefully one day an Australian Socceroo. The contract I have signed is for this season only and I need to maintain my skills and fitness to hopefully remain on contract next season or be selected for the academy. I do this by training three nights a week with my team at Brighton-Le-Sands and I do an additional two to three sessions per week with my dad. As I am only 14, this is a big commitment on my behalf as I also have my schoolwork to do and assignments etc, but I so enjoy my soccer.

He can juggle a soccer ball 216 times without stopping. You try it …

What position do you play? I play on the left wing and can kick and score with both my right and left feet, so can play a number of positions on the field. However, my favorite position is the left wing. I am very confident in this position and I feel my team players know this and they are confident to pass the ball to me, as not only can I score goals but I also assist in setting many up. Tell us about your recent skateboard injury. In my spare time, when not training for soccer, I do enjoy hanging out with my friends and we go skateboarding and surfing. Recently I gave my parents a scare as I fell off my skateboard and was taken to the medical centre. I had some pretty good scars and bruising from coming off. I had to rest for a week and do no training, although I still went to my training sessions and assisted my coach. I am fine now, but, as a result of this and surfing on the weekends, I do have a few scars and grazes. What are your goals with this club for this season? At the moment I can do approximately 216 juggles but would like to be able to get to 500 this year! Last year I scored more than 40 goals and this year in the premier league I would like to score at least 30. My goal, for not only myself this year but my team, is to do very well this season and win the league! That would be a really good achievement and to date in our pre-season games we have done well. So fingers crossed. Our season started on the 14th of March, two days before my 14th birthday.

2508

2508p010-11_COVER FEATURE_APRIL_2015.indd 11

Why’s soccer so important to you? Soccer is so very important to me because I have been playing since I was five and I enjoy it and really want to do well and hopefully one day become a professional football player and I want to make my family and friends very proud of me, as my dad, mum and step-dad support me and believe in me and take me to all my training sessions and games on the weekend. One day I hope that I can be playing in Europe as I couldn’t think of a better career for myself. I do enjoy it so much and who doesn’t want to do something they enjoy and be paid for it? 2508 ■ Thanks to Kim and Kelvin Lee for their help with this feature.

School children cram into a carriage at Helensburgh.

FIGHT FOR BUS SERVICE

The hard work of parents from throughout Helensburgh and district, who want a bus service for the 400 or so students who travel from Helensburgh to Heathcote and Bosco high schools, has seemingly yielded results. The region’s politicians – including the Greens’ Natasha Watson – have at least paid serious attention to the issue. Parents reckon that students tackle a 70-minute foot, bus and train slog each way; a bus would slash that trip to 20 minutes, they believe. At time of writing (March 22), Labor candidate for Heathcote, Maryanne Stuart, had promised a new bus service, to take Helensburgh students to high schools in Heathcote and Engadine, if her party won power. MP Lee Evans had approached Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian about the possibility of a bus. Whether all of the attention was bluff and bluster from pre-election pollies is yet to be seen. “Hopefully, it’s put a bit of pressure on them to do the right thing,” said Nicole Geldart, a spokeswoman for the parents.

Facebook posts started as a bit of fun, inspired by the trend to re-enact childhood photos. “It has snowballed!” said Symbio’s Michelle Aldred. “It’s also been a fabulous bonding exercise.”

For those of us who appreciate great music, there is cause for celebration: a new local community band has been formed. STANWELL PARK NURSING HOME FOR SALE

– By Heather Smith An Expression of Interest campaign is underway for the sale of Kennett Home – the Stanwell Park nursing home with million-dollar views. Stephen Pearce, the Sydney South Assistant Manager for owner United Protestant Association, said residents at the home would be moved to a new facility being built at Hillcrest Village near the station in Stanwell Park. The new home was due for completion at the end of this year, but weather delays have pushed the date out to March 2016. “We’re hoping it will be finished by this time next year but things never go according to plan,” Mr Pearce said. Kennett Home will be sold with a delayed settlement through Ray White Helensburgh. Principal Simon Beaufils said Expressions of Interest close on April 23 for the 24-room facility. “We will have an expansive marketing campaign,” he said. “Then we will have a better understanding of who would be the appropriate party for such a large property.” The 1894 sq m site on the headland in The Drive is zoned R2 low density, which allows for B&B accommodation, child care centres, consulting rooms and hostels, among others.

Cost of dumpers at salvos

“Dumping” is driving up prices at Salvos, says manager Michelle Hutchison. The charity store has to pay for trucks to remove unwanted, broken or filthy goods. “Some of the stuff that gets dumped is pretty disgusting,” Michelle said. Another store overhead is the lack of volunteers. “Most stores have about 30, I’ve probably got about four, ” Michelle said. Want to help? See Michelle in store. “Even an hour, two hours is enough. We are just so appreciative of any time at all,” she said. 2508

Dance till you drop IT was possibly the biggest ladies night the Burgh has seen. On Saturday, March 14, 165 women partied the night away at Helensburgh Tradies, raising $7000 for victims of domestic violence. The dance night was organised by Sammy Mahler of Little Miss Boo Personal Styling, with Jamie Hottes and Bevans estate agent Wendy Lepre. All funds raised went to Supported Accommodation and Homelessness Services Shoalhaven Illawarra (sahssi.org.au). “It was just the most incredible night with so much wonderful energy, laughter and empowerment – not forgetting to mention the great dancing!” Sammy said. Will she do it again? “Yes, same time next year.” The spirit of the night was captured by April Boughton Photography, and Kim and Kelvin Lee at the Giggle Booth, where fabulous props added to the party photo booth fun. 2508

When the lagoons breakout naturally (or with the help of digging hands), the water flows from a high level to a lower level (sea-level) and what starts as a trickle quickly forms into rapids as the high volume of water becomes constricted. This rapid flow creates big ripples on the bottom called antidunes and the water surface mimics their shape forming stationary ‘standing’ waves that start to break upstream. In physics terms, this is known as a hydraulic jump. Cooking with Rob In the second part of our new series for local foodies, R&R’s Rob Lisk extols the fun and great taste of figs. Figs. If you’ve got a set, try cooking some of the last of the season. Such a beautiful fruit and it can be used in so many different ways. If they’re really good quality, slice them into evenly cut wedges and serve with cheeses, such as a double Brie, or a creamy blue from King Island. As a dessert, cut in half and sprinkle with soft

brown sugar and bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°C for about seven minutes, depending on the ripeness of the fruit, and serve with ice-cream or double cream, or both. One of my favourite ways to eat this fruit is cooked as an old-school jam, served on a crusty scone with a thick layer of cream. This is a great food memory I grew up on. You can grill them over a char grill and serve with pan-fried haloumi cheese, in a salad or with barbecued lamb, venison or spicy chicken fillets. There’s a stack of different recipes you can Google to enjoy and learn something new that you haven’t tried before. Enjoy the last of the figs. 2508

Gardening with sara To design a child-friendly garden, think of your own fondest memories, writes Sara Newnham. Do you remember the fun of climbing trees? Playing ball games with family or friends? Catching lizards or watching birds make nests? Did you see fairies hiding under flowers or eat sweet tomatoes from the vine? Bake mud pies and plan adventures with mates in your secret hide-out aka the cubby? These are all the things I loved to do and when given the chance kids still like to do today. The first step to get your kids outside is to provide functional areas for play, such as somewhere to exercise, kick a ball on lawn or ride a bike on paving. A mulched area is good for simple play equipment, swing sets, trampolines or just to get digging in. Sand pits are lots of fun for little ones, but be sure to cover them each night or they become the neighbourhood kitty litter box. Quiet zones are important as safe places where kids can use their imagination for creative play. These areas don’t need to be completely out of adults’ sight. Give them the

children can learn important life lessons, observe life CYCLES and watch the seasons change. opportunity to hide behind a rock or plant something they can play behind that you can still see through. A good example is clumping grass, bamboo or a vine-covered arbor. A small tree can provide shelter from the sun and be a great educational tool, teaching problem-solving skills once the child is allowed to climb. Cubby houses are the best quiet refuge – plan one that can grow with your child, transforming from a hidey-hole for role-playing preschoolers to a teens’ hangout. Give your child a plant to care for or a vege patch to tend. I have found kids will unwittingly become better eaters if given the task of

growing a new fruit or veg. They are more likely to eat it after tending to it for a few weeks. Gardens are healthy places for kids to learn so many important life lessons, observe life cycles and change of seasons, and teach responsibility. Gardening teaches children to value what’s around them, and it makes them aware of their impact on the environment. A very important element to child-friendly garden design is safety. Please eliminate any potential risks by avoiding water features that could become drowning hazards. Teach kids the real dangers of the venomous creatures we have throughout our bushy district. Try to make kids aware of dangers, but not afraid of their gardens. Precautionary protective gear is necessary and as simple as enclosed shoes, gloves, sun hats and sunglasses. Teach kids what they can and can’t eat as there are many toxic plants. Get rid of choking hazards around small children by not planting berry-laden plants or having pebbles in play areas. Avoid spiky plants in high-traffic areas. Create a sanctuary and your children will make their own wonderful memories. 2508 For help designing or installing a child-friendly garden, call Sara Newnham on 0451 196 646.

Why I’m passionate about Permaculture By Narelle Happ, owner of local business A Garden for Life Permaculture means permanent agriculture or culture. It is a philosophy which brings together microclimates, annual and perennial plants, animals, soil, water management and people and community. Often as a permaculture/garden designer I am asked to put the vegetable patch “over in that corner”. Permaculture brings the vege patch out from the corner and into our entire lifestyle. Permaculture and its ethics and principles can be applied to any area we live in – from a unit, a standard suburban block to a large property school or community space.

Three ethics and 12 principles govern permaculture. Living according to the ethics – People Care, Earth Care and Fair Share – can create an abundant life and that is where my passion lies. People Care is looking out for ourselves, our families and our community. It then extends to other people in need. Earth Care means caring for the soil, the micro-organisms living in the soil, the land we live on, the planet. Start at home by composting, only using what you need, replenishing the soil. Replace what you reap. Use watertanks to retain water and re-use on your property. Fair Share. What better way to be involved in your community than sharing what you don’t need. Everyone benefits. Permaculture creates a cohesive system in the garden and our lives. It creates a healthy environment and is self-sustaining – giving us more time with the people we care about. Narelle will hold a Seed Raising and Saving Workshop at Sunrise Nursery on April 18. $50pp, 0404 123 747, agardenforlife.com.au.

swim carnival! A Helensburgh Public School report, By Stephen McQueen, Teacher Librarian It is hard to believe we are past the half-way mark of the first term. It has flown by. Lots has been happening so far. One of the highlights of the early part of the year has definitely been the swimming carnival held on the 10th of February. The weather was fine, the competition was fierce but friendly and the day was a great success. Congratulations to Mrs Redfern who made her debut as a carnival organiser and was still seen smiling at the end of the day. Congratulations also to the parent volunteers who made the carnival run smoothly and to the parent swimmers who once again defeated the teachers in the final relay. Thank you also to the teachers for all their hard work, but most of all congratulations to all the children, whether champion swimmers or novices, for their outstanding behaviour and participation. Meanwhile back in school there has also been

2508

2508p022-23_SCHOOLS_APRIL_2015.indd 22

a lot of organisation. House Captains and Student Representative Councillors have been elected and library monitors have been chosen. A new student welfare policy has begun and our teaching and social awareness programs are well underway. The children are particularly enjoying the Peer Support Program which began a few weeks back and runs every Friday afternoon. This is a great way for children to get to know other students from different grades. The focus of this year’s program is “Being Positive”. It is an inspiring message to end each week. 2508

KIDS CLEAN UP By Keith Tomlinson, Principal of Stanwell Park Public School

We had a very successful Clean Up Day at school and in the community recently. Years 3-6 took the opportunity to go into the community and K-2 cleaned up the school grounds. The Clean Up day is an integral part of the school’s environmental program and one where important lessons are learnt regarding conservation practices for the future. Once again our school did a tremendous job with about 45kgs of waste material being picked up. This is waste that would eventually end up in the sea. The campaign is a timely reminder that we should care for our environment on a daily basis and not just once a year. REGION SWIMMING We had a large squad of swimmers at the Region Swimming Carnival. Tianna, Isabella, Gus, Abby, Madison and Briana represented our school with some outstanding results. Tianna came 6th in backstroke, 16th in breaststroke, 9th in medley, 10th in butterfly and 17th in the open 100m. Abby came 17th in 11 year freestyle. Madison came 13th in backstroke. Briana came 12th in breaststroke. Isabella came 16th in 9 year freestyle. Gus came 11th in 9 year freestyle. When you consider there are about 6000 students in each year level across the region, these results are outstanding! Congratulations to all our swimmers performing at this very high regional level. 2508

chicks love keepers

By Symbio’s Michelle Aldred

Named after the famous Australia Zoo owners and wildlife warriors, Bindi and Irwin are our brother and sister baby eclectus parrots. Mum and Dad neglected their previous hatch so, to ensure the chicks’ survival, two dedicated keepers have hand-raised them since birth. It is not uncommon for our zoo keepers to handraise injured, orphaned and rejected wildlife. Emily, one of our primate and carnivore keepers, and Dan, a bird and reptile keeper, have cared for the parrots for the past 62 days. After birth, this adorable pair started off on five daily spoon feeds, including very early feeds, and very late feeds, so our keepers were often up at all hours. They have now weaned down to two spoonfeeds per day as they are getting used to solid fruits and some seeds. As a testament to the TLC that they have been receiving, Bindi is very much a Daddy’s girl and goes gaga when she sees her

RULES FOR PARENTS: • Never leave a child alone with a dog • Don’t let your child feed a dog unsupervised as some dogs can be protective around food. • Don’t let a child pull on the dog’s collar

Kaos off to St Louis! By Celia Lewis Komplete Kaos will participate in the FIRST® World Championship in St Louis, US, from of April 22-25. Our 2508 Lego Robotics team are so excited to be participating in this high-tech, high-energy event. The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship brings together three separate robotics competitions for the ultimate Sport for the Mind™, including Robotics, Tech Challenge, FIRST LEGO League (FLL) from all around the globe. Last year no Australians teams got to go. This year Project Bucephalus (Wollongong-based) was given an invite. Then, for the first time ever, Australia received a second invitation… for us, Komplete Kaos! It is an amazing opportunity to participate with our friends from Project B, watching and learning from the world’s best! Komplete Kaos is a dedicated and creative team of children, aged 10-14, who are, or were, students at Helensburgh Public School, and learnt Lego robotics after school. Even though the team attends different primary and high schools, we train and plan as a unit, meeting on the weekends and after school. We started in 2012. We were dubbed the 2012 Australian FLL Rookie All-Stars, came second in

hotel sold! By HEATHER SMITH Weddings will be a strong focus of the Imperial Hotel at Clifton when it reopens in about two years, say its new owners. The iconic property was bought by the Shellharbour Workers’ Club post-auction on March 14 for an undisclosed amount, believed to be just more than $2 million. Club CEO Debbie Cosmos said the rundown building would continue to trade as a pub with event facilities, food and beverage, as well as training and lifestyle spaces for the community. “We will focus very heavily on the wedding market,” she said. “And we will optimise its use during the day with things like cooking and art classes.” Previous owners, WIN Corporation, held the property for more than 30 years, but it has been shut since 2003 after a landslide closed Lawrence

Hargrave Drive, heralding a two-year hiatus while the Sea Cliff Bridge was built. WIN Corp had planned to reopen the hotel, buying property to address car parking issues and gaining Development Approval for 24 bays. Ms Cosmos said Shellharbour Workers’ Club would work closely with Wollongong City Council to make parking easier. “Car parking is critical to the success of the hotel,” she said. The restored hotel will not include poker machines. “Shellharbour Workers’ Club plans to reinstate the building to its original glory,” Ms Cosmos said. 2508

view report By publicity officer Virginia Dowson The Helensburgh VIEW Club luncheon of February 17 was also the Club’s AGM. The previous Committee was nominated and re-elected unanimously (pictured right). Zone Councillor Yvonne White congratulated the Committee and presented them with their badges of office. She also praised our Club for the wonderful support and sponsoring of the two students, and fundraising for The Smith Family’s “Learning for Life” program. Reports were given by President Marg Rae, who welcomed everyone, and reports were also given by the Secretary and Treasurer. Pauline Millott received her Club Membership badge, and we welcomed two new members, who said they enjoyed the day. Welcome back to Barbara from Alberta, Canada on her yearly visit. Thanks must go to Elaine and her helpers for

Details to come. Chris is at present taking bookings for Matilda on October 2015, for the 2pm matinee at the Lyric Theatre, pay by August 18. Please phone her on 4294 1103 for details. 2508 HISTORY

experiments in the park The third in our series about aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave, by local historian Michael Adams. By 1892, Lawrence Hargrave was regarded in some circles as the foremost aeronautical experimenter in the world. In 1894 Octave Chanute, one of the most influential people in aeronautical development, published Progress in Flying Machines in the USA; 14 of its 398 pages were devoted to Hargrave’s experiments in which he made the claim: “If there is one man, more than another, who deserves to succeed in flying through the air, that man is Lawrence Hargrave of Sydney, New South Wales.” Lawrence Hargrave brought his family to Stanwell Park in 1893. Already he was designing what he called cellular kites, three-dimensional kites which could catch the wind more surely and sit in the air more securely. He had plenty of wind at Stanwell Park, and conducted most of his experiments on the beach, and not on Bald Hill as might be suggested by the memorial there. The steep Illawarra escarpment helped channel the winds, creating something of a wind tunnel for Hargrave.

Home of the Hargraves … Stanwell Park in the 1890s.

Life at Stanwell Park was simple, almost at subsistence level, Hargrave wanting the Hillcrest property to support the family. In that way he could husband his inherited money through the great depression of the 1890s, but still maintain his aeronautical experimentation. The rest of the aeronautical world was experimenting with single surface gliders. Hargrave decided to try himself, built a glider in 1894, launched himself from the then very steep sand hill above the beach, and ended up on his back, lucky to be alive. In fact his friend Otto Lilienthal, one of the truly great aeronautical pioneers, died in a gliding accident in 1894. Hargrave put behind him single-surface gliding and determined that when next he took to the air, it should be by means of cellular or box kites. To be continued… 2508

hapkido This korean martial art blends punching, kicking and throwing into a disciplined but safe, funfilled regimen for kids and adults, Instructor Chris Currey writes Hapkido Stanwell Park is a martial art for ages 3 years to 63+, with three classes running every Thursday during school terms. These classes incorporate kicks, punches, throws and falls, self-defence techniques and weapons. Little Dragons (3-5 years of age) focus on balance, coordination, listening skills and fitness with martial arts-based games. Kids (6-12) follow the Australian Hapkido Association (AHA) syllabus focusing on coordination, self-confidence, discipline, antibullying techniques and fitness in a fun, safe environment. Adults follow the AHA syllabus with a greater focus on self-defence and fitness. Hapkido Stanwell Park has been running for four years and is operated by certified black belt instructors. They have a combined martial arts experience of more than 50 years training, holding black belts in Hapkido (2nd Degree and above), and black belts in Taekwondo. Hapkido has real benefits for kids and adults; it allows the student to set and achieve personal goals through the belt grading system. to belt. This helps to increase self-esteem and self-confidence. At Hapkido, students learn lessons in respect, as well as their techniques. Martial arts are generally thought to be all about kicking and punching, but at Hapkido we also teach peaceful, non-violent conflict-resolution skills and emphasise the importance of avoiding physical altercations. Finally, life skills are learnt through years of training. With increased fitness, respect and confidence, these skills will flow into home life, school and the work force. 2508 ■ For more information on Hapkido Martial Arts Stanwell Park, contact chrishapkido@ bigpond.com or 0434 729 743 or visit the website at www.australianhapkido.com.

L MARTIA S T AR SPECIAL

2508 REPORT START TRAINING!

taekidokai Taekidokai is a unique martial art run under Sensei Rodney Day, 7th dan black belt, writes Greg Amor, Chief Instructor of Sydney South. Taekido encourages discipline, confidence, respect and self-defence; it encompasses the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of training and is suitable for men, women and children of all ages. Junior classes suit kids aged from about 4 to 12. We teach a range of martial arts techniques aimed at developing physical and mental abilities. Kids become strong and flexible, while improving their co-ordination and concentration. Our teaching methods promote fun and self-discipline and help kids to learn a good mix of both. We also have classes for teens and adults. The most common question we get asked is: “Do I need to be fit to do martial arts?” The answer is: “No. Martial arts will make you fit!” You’ll learn new skills and develop yourself mentally and physically; getting fit is just a great side-effect. We follow a graded system, starting at white belt. There is no pressure to succeed, goals are realistic and each student is encouraged to progress at their own pace. There’s no need to book a class, just turn up and join in. Pay as you go and only for the lessons you attend. 2508 ■ For more information, contact Tasshi Greg on 0421 869 540 or visit www.tkma.com.au.

BEACH TO BOMBIE By Jenelle McWilliam The last event of the Triple Crown Challenge, The Beach to Bombie Swim was held on Sunday, March 15, in very challenging conditions. A number of swimmers used this as a warm-up for the Coalcliff to Stanwell Park Swim. The water temperature was warm, but the outside temperature was very cool. First out of the water was young Matthew Logan, closely followed by Tim Lloyd and Oliver Petitcuenot. First woman was Cara Van Wyk. Well done, competitors. Awesome effort in really trying conditions. The water-safety crews made sure everyone was safe during the swim, a BIG Thank You to all our Volunteers. The unpleasant weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd at The Bombie Bar who were entertained by Brett Hunt, Rebecca Moore and her band. Looking forward to another crowd pleaser, Nicole Brophy, on Sunday, April 19. 2508

set for nationals It’s been a busy year so far for Helensburgh’s world champ bmxer Saya Sakakibara. The first four months of the 2015 season have been very busy, packed with racing. There have been races almost every fortnight around the country and in NSW. The season started off with a bang on the first weekend of January. Rounds 1 and 2 of the Champbikx National Series in Nerang, QLD were two days of solid racing. I was consistently out the front and won both of the rounds, which placed me at the top of the leader board. At the start of February, Shepparton BMX Club in Victoria hosted the third and fourth round of the Champbikx Series. The weather was stinking hot, but I survived the heat and I kept myself fresh for the whole weekend to finish with another back-to-back win. The most recent rounds of the Champbikx Series were held at Westside, Perth, WA at the beginning of March. I was feeling pretty confident going into the weekend as I was still leading the series for my class. I pulled off good laps each race and won both rounds. It was not an easy win; there were girls right on my back wheel, putting the pressure on all weekend. In between the national rounds there were a number of NSW races. I race the 16 Boys in the State Series races instead of girls for more competition. The first round of the State Series was held at Liverpool where I finished 5th in the final against the boys. Which was a great result. I have also been racing in some open races, which don’t count towards any overall result, like the State Series. I choose to race in the 14+ Pro Women class as this gives me a great opportunity to race against some of the country’s top women riders. I am looking forward to other races coming up later in the year, such as the Australian National Championships in May and the World

Dive in! The Winter Swimming season is back on, reports Stanwell Park Sea Eels Publicity officer Karl Weber. The summer sun seems to still be burning bright, but the winter swimming season is upon us once again. The water is a refreshing temperature and, believe it or not, it usually stays pretty warm for a few months to come. We will start to see the whales swimming up along the coast around this time of the year, and there is no better vantage point than poolside on a Sunday morning. As a club, the Stanwell Park Sea Eels ended the 2014 season on a high when we competed at the Australian Winter Swimming Titles in Sydney. One of our club members, Vivienne Moxham-Hall, won the Women’s “25 and over” 50m freestyle. She swam a powerful race, missing the record by 2 seconds. Well done Viv,

The Stanwell Park Sea Eels competed in last year’s Bondi titles.

we are proud of you. We also managed to pick up two top 5 positions in the Open mixed relays, which added to the celebratory feel of the afternoon. The Sea Eel’s first swim back at Coalcliff Pool is on Sunday, April 26, followed by our annual general meeting at H-SP Surf Club. We are a social club: we like sharing a few laughs and raising money for our charity group, the CRAM Foundation. This organisation caters for severely disabled people who enjoy a Sea Eels extravaganza day through the season. To participate all you have to do is be capable of swimming 50m unassisted, and the club is open to female and male swimmers. We start at 9am (kids) and 9.30am (adults). If you are late, expect to be fined. If you want to take part as a social member, then come and join in. The more the merrier. See you down at Coalcliff pool. 2508

MTB racing star By Heather Smith Mountain bike racer Isaac Ridley (pictured, at left) is climbing the junior ranks of the sport with just 12 months of competition behind him. Isaac, 15, gained two Top 10 finishes at the recent Interschools Championship in Thredbo against about 90 competitors in his division. The Stanwell Park teenager came fourth in the Dual Compressor, where two riders do battle over a slalom course, and fifth in the Downhill. “The Downhill is more challenging and technical,” Isaac said. “You don’t have to be super fit but need a lot of skill and control.” Isaac plans to sell his motorbike to buy a better mountain bike and hopes to make a living out of his sport. 2508

help a great cause swim instructor MEL WHITESIDE writes about a topic very close to her heart. In June 2012 my fit, healthy firefighter husband became suddenly and seriously ill. We had opened our indoor, heated pool only five weeks before when one Friday morning, while I was in the pool teaching, he collapsed at home in pain. He thought he was having a heart attack. After 15-20 minutes he called an ambulance and was taken to Sutherland Hospital. Tests found nothing. He was still in a lot of pain. An ultrasound four days later revealed the problem: his heart valve had ruptured and his aorta had dissected from his heart to below his hips. I was told then it was a miracle he was alive, surviving four days was even more of a miracle. I was advised he probably would not survive the emergency trip to Prince of Wales Hospital for open-heart surgery – but he did. After 15 hours of surgery he was on life support and in intensive care. I was told it was still “touch and go”. Losing a leg and arm, a kidney and brain damage were expected. Now, it is almost three years later. Aortic dissection is thought to be a connective tissue disorder. There are three known and named types but my husband’s is not one of them. During my husband’s fight to stay alive and our family’s struggle to deal with our new life the community of 2508, Helensburgh-Stanwell Park surf club, Seacliff Hockey club, our beautiful family, special friends and our amazing staff at Crawchy’s were nothing short of spectacular. Over the past three years we have met some fantastic people from around the globe and started Aortic Warriors, a support and research site for survivors, carers and families of those who didn’t make it. This is a new priority in my life. I am training for the Australian Ironman (3.8km swim, 180km

Tradies social golf Barry Thompson savours a sweet return to the golf course after injury forced him off the green. Back at Tradies after our March round, I pondered on what I had missed about my injury-related absence from our tournaments. It certainly wasn’t the heart-breaking splash of balls hitting water: nor was it navigating those &%$#& clumps of Gymea Lilly on the 13th. What I missed was the chance to play with a group who enjoy the social aspect of their golf and are always ready to laugh at others – I mean themselves – during a round. Anybody who enjoys their game but doesn’t

take it too seriously will fit into our club and are invited to join us. We play a monthly Saturday tournament at Boomerang. Go to our Facebook page for dates and contact information. Early rain cleared to provide us with perfect playing conditions and Carl Foster and Paul Morahan combined to win the Ambrose event. Steve Egbers and Mark Ryan took out second spot and Sparrow King’s game will benefit from him winning the Helensburgh Driving Range prize. Dave Astill ruined his chance of a high handicap by sinking putts from everywhere during his final three-card round. Mark Gagin, back in his role as O.I.C Catering Corps, provided an excellent B.B.Q lunch. Thanks Mark and thanks to the staff of R&R for preparing the B.B.Q area. Club captain Steve Egbers has confirmed our trip to Bowral on Sunday, April 26. Final details will be on our Facebook Page. Our next hit-out will be on Saturday, April 18 at Boomerang. Tee-off at 7am. Musing: Golf is a game where some shout ”Fore”, shoot six and write down five. Contact me at bazto78@yahoo.com. 2508

sunday social golf club Vicki ‘The Hair’ Little farewells a good mate – and the fun-time crew plays some sweaty irish four ball. Sitting under a shady tree enjoying lunch with a sick friend you realise how short life is! So this column is dedicated to our good friend Bob who has now passed. I only had one game of golf with him down at Bowral; he didn’t play much as you could tell by the cursing and swearing. But laugh! What a great day we had, and that’s what golf is about, getting out there and having a go whether good, bad or indifferent. We all play for different reasons, usually for the love of the game, or just to get out and bash the s--- out of that little white ball. Not being there on the day Toni Prez has analysed the day as he does so well. Funny! The day was very hot which made it very

2508

2508p052-53_SPORT_GOLF_APRIL_2015.indd 52

uncomfortable. But with Irish four ball in mind: this is scored by the lowest score – isn’t that Irish? JB, Johnny Brunston and Pete ‘Doc’ House scored the day with 25 points, followed closely by Freddie ‘Kruger’ Tilden and Bruce ‘Soccerball’ Richards on 24 points. Among the tragedies out on the course that day one good thing worked for Greg ‘Krispy Cream’ Crisp, picking up the Eagles Nest on the 7th. I was told it was the shot of the day; apparently he had his eyes closed! Maybe I should try that. So, why not get your monthly dose of ‘iron‘ and grab your sticks and come and play 18 with some of the local tragics on the first Sunday of the month. rugby on the rock Helensburgh’s Paul ‘Woody’ Woodward is gearing up for a huge over-35s rugby tournament on norfolk island. You keen to play? Woody’s side already includes teammates from around the world but he is looking for support from those closer to home to contest Rugby on the Rock on Norfolk Island from Saturday, August 1 to Sunday, August 9. Visiting teams will compete against the island’s own “Creaky Old Convicts” in the golden oldies tournament. Any players over 35 years of age are eligible to play. Woody, a former Wests and Randwick first grade half-back and now 62 years of age, is looking for fellow 2508 residents who are keen to lace up their boots and hit the rugby field for a healthy dose of fun, on and off the field. The golden oldies’ spirit is “fun, friendship and fraternity – it’s all about camaraderie with each other, having a great time”, he said. “This is a great event; it’s my first time in golden oldies, a lot of my mates have been playing in festivals all over the world, over time and I’ve been conned into this one because they

Photo: 2508 needed a half-back, they didn’t have any, so there are about 18 teams coming from all over the world for this tournament.” Rules include no lifting in line-outs and no kicking the ball. “It’s played in the spirit of absolute fairness.” For more details, call Paul on 4294 2860, or email him at pwoodward7@bigpond.com. 2508

bryn shines in europe Local snow star Bryn Jarman performed well in Europe. Barbara Jarman reports Bryn finished in 1st place for U16 boys GS (giant slalom) at the Welsh Alpine Ski Championships in Switzerland, making him the Welsh GS champion. He was 1st by 3.68 secs, which is a huge margin. He then went to the Trofeu Borrufa Andorra International children’s races, in late January,

STATE CHAMPS! Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Club’s women’s surf boat crew have won gold at the state titles, coach/ sweep Mark ‘Bluey’ Lea reports. In extreme weather conditions, HelensburghStanwell Park open women’s surfboat crew beat all-comers to become state champions, winning gold at the NSW state titles, held at Umina Beach from March 13 to 15. The crew – Georgia Leach, Stephanie Barlow, Courtney Overell, Brooke Dent and sweep Mark Lea – rowed well and qualified with two wins, progressing into Sunday’s racing. The wind was up early blowing southerly, straight into Umina Beach with the forecast for it to get stronger. The crew handled the conditions well and progressed through the quarter-finals, semis, and then, bashed and battered by waves, into the final!

The line-up for the final was: Manly (current NSW representatives); Palm Beach (winners of the ASRL Open, three weeks before); Bilgola (third at last year’s Australian championships); Austinmer (second in Ocean Thunder), South Narrabeen (who’d won a round of Ocean Thunder this year); and our crew. By the back of the first bank the girls were in a commanding one-length lead. Our shorter oars were doing the job in those conditions, but we had to give it everything to stay in front to the turning cans as it was a quick trip back to the beach. After a tough see-sawing battle with Austinmer – during which they stayed level with us for some of the run back to the beach – we crossed the line a clear winner, much to the delight of the girls and the small but loud group of H-SP supporters. It was a great reward for the bloody hard work the girls have put in all year and was made even more special as it was their first state medal. It was also a special moment for Bobo White – who the boat is named after – as he was on the finish line judges to watch the fast blue boat win another major title. Our club finished in 6th place in the overall point score, the club’s best result at the state championships. Next up is the Australian Championships from April 13 to 19 at North Kirra Beach, Queensland. We’ll try to go one better than last year’s silver medal. 2508
