Dear Editor, It never ceases to amaze me how people can choose to live near a railway line, a busy main road or under a flight path near an airport and then protest about the noise. Noise, unfortunately, is part of modern life and the very design of a railway and its rolling stock guarantees that there will be noise. My family and I have lived 300 metres from the railway line at Helensburgh for 33 years within view of the passing trains and the same noisy trains which pass through Otford also pass through Helensburgh. I can honestly say that in all that time my rest has only been disturbed twice by noise from the railway. That noisy railway is the lifeblood of the Illawarra. Have the residents of Otford considered the needs of the tens of thousands of commuters or the export industries relying on our railway? Perhaps the residents of Otford could come and live in “suburbia” where they would have to contend with barking neighbourhood dogs, jackhammers, chainsaws and leaf blowers. All of these must be tolerated in the interest of keeping the peace. Chris McCarthy Helensburgh

House fire, The Ridge, Helensburgh, July 1996.

electrical fire safety By Captain Jim Powell, Helensburgh Fire & Rescue Station 325 The most common causes of fires in your home are electrical. The more electrical appliances you have, then the greater the risk. Some common causes are overloading of power boards and damaged electrical leads. Some electrical appliances that are common fire problems are clothes dryers. If you don’t clean the lint filter regularly this causes overheating and imminent fire danger. We have had three such incidents over the past two years, luckily with only minor damage. Electric blankets and water beds also are fire risks; blankets should be turned off once the bed is warmed up. Check the heater pad regularly on water beds as they perish over time and the smallest amount of water can cause an electrical short. I know because it happened to me 15 years ago. Clothes should never be placed directly over heaters of any kind. Most clothes these days are of synthetic materials that cause an inflammable gas to produce with heat, causing the clothes to catch alight. Electrical oil heaters are another problem if left on high for long periods of time on synthetic carpets as the same principle applies. We have had two such incidents with these appliances a few years back, but luckily none in the last five years, so better information in regards to these heaters must be getting through to consumers of these products. The other common fires from electrical products are electric motors that run fridges, freezers and washing machines. Dust and

2508

2508p006_NEWS FIRIES_MARCH_2015.indd 6

fluff build up around the motors and once hot enough catches on fire. Remember the only way to extinguish electrical fires is with a dry powder fire extinguisher that is recommended for electrical fires under the Australian Safety Standards Board. Always call 000 when a fire occurs in your home, importantly to make sure the fire is completely out and has not spread somewhere else. Fire & Rescue NSW has special heatdetecting cameras to help find hotspots behind wall cavities. I hope this information may be of some help to householders in regards to Electrical Fire Awareness in their homes. 2508 ■ In fire and rescue news, Scarborough, Coledale and Helensburgh fire crews attended a garage fire in Stanwell Park on February 4. “The initial call was at 10.54pm … at 31A Murrawal Road … it was reported that a domestic garage was alight,” Captain of Scarborough Fire Station Les Choice said. “On arrival there it was quite evident there was a large fire due to the high flames and glow in the air.” Firefighters used breathing apparatus and structural firefighting gear on the job. “We worked until … 3 o’clock in the morning to extinguish the blaze which was … an 8m by 8m garage and the owner [had been] taking off an … asbestos roof and had a lot of it in the garage. “We got a recall at 4.33am because it had reignited.” Crews had the fire extinguished “by about 6.15am” and remained at the scene until 11am. A HAZMAT team from Shellharbour’s Station 488 Station also attended.

Dora and Leo Constantinou.

GOODBYE, LEO AND DORA We wish this wonderful couple well … After 18 and a half years of operating Stanwell Park’s Beach Kiosk, Leo and Dora Constantinou have left the business. 2508 had a chat with Leo to say goodbye and ask him about the couple’s plans for the future … The kiosk has been a huge part of your life for so long … I’m going to miss the place and also I’m going to miss the beautiful people I’ve met … they took a big part in my life and I’m so happy that I came this way and I stayed so long. What did you think of Stanwell Park when you first came here with a mate all those years ago? I saw a place so beautiful and nice and relaxed, so I said: ‘Alright, I will give it a try’ and … I sub-leased from the previous owner and every year we say: ’Oh, it’s going to be the last year’ and 18 and a half years later we’re still here …but I suppose, whatever begins, it has to end one day so … but yeah I’ve been very, very happy and pleased to come to Stanwell Park. What are your plans now? I’m 68 … I still have another five years to

2508

2508p008_NEWS LEO & DORA_MARCH_2015.indd 8

work if I want to because I love working and I love to be in the kitchen and also meeting people every day but … I might retire … if I find something, a coffee lounge, a small coffee lounge with light meals … I will see if I can succeed at that, but we’ll just decide … we’re not a 100 percent sure. You’re a big part of this community. Yes, I feel that way because when you know everybody around and they know who you are … that just makes it one family. All these young kids they come to the kiosk, they respect us so much … [tears well in his eyes] I’m going to miss them …it’s been the most happiest time of my life to be in this shop.

HELLO SOFIA!

The Beach Kiosk’s new live-in manager is Sofia Papadopoulos (pictured). “I’ve been in the food game for 45 years and I enjoy this place. The place is beautiful and the people are very nice here, they’re very polite, well-mannered, the kids as well.” 2508

dance till you drop Photos by Unicorn Studios, unicornstudios.com.au

This girls night out embodies the spirit that makes you proud to belong to 2508. The statistics are horrible. In Australia, one in three women has suffered physical violence. On average, one woman a week is murdered by a current or former partner. More than a million children are affected by family violence. News reports have dubbed domestic violence a “national emergency”, a “national disgrace”. Yet many community services – including legal aid for domestic violence victims – lost funding after last year’s Budget cuts. But will we stand by and watch the weak, the vulnerable and the abused battle for aid? Hell no. We’ll throw a party instead. Three inspiring local go-getters have put together a ladies-only dance night at Helensburgh Tradies that aims to raise up to $15,000 to help victims of domestic violence. Dance Till You Drop is the brainchild of Little

Miss Boo Personal Styling’s Sammy Mahler, enthusiastically aided by Wendy Lepre and Jamie Hottes, of Bevans Thirroul estate agency. “Everyone can have a giggle, maybe there’ll be a throwback from the ‘70s and everyone can just dance! Let it go!” Sammy says, laughing. It’s billed as a night of love and laughter, but will raise money for a grave issue. “Domestic violence is a gritty subject, but it needs to be known,” says Sammy. “There is a taboo still. It is horrible, but it is very real. So we can’t just sweep it under the carpet like it’s 1952. It’s 2015 and this is a very real, everyday occurrence … there is a high percentage of domestic violence within this area, right through down to the Shoalhaven. “That is why I was so passionate about working with our local women’s shelter, to give these young girls and children a better start.”

WHERE THE MONEY GOES Funds raised will go to Supported Accommodation and Support Services

2508 REPORT Shoalhaven Illawarra (SAHSSI). SAHSSI has its headquarters in Swan Street in Wollongong, but covers a big area, working across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven districts. The not-for-profit was formed in October 2014, a merger of Wollongong and Warilla Women’s Refuges. SAHSSI CEO Kathy Colyer said, “There were a lot of cuts within our sector and we were one of the fortunate to survive.” Domestic violence is a major driver of homelessness among women and their children, and SAHSSI helps clients – some of whom flee with just the clothes on their backs – find new homes and start over. “We’ve taken them to the shops and bought them clothes, stuff for their immediate needs,” Kathy said. Services include rehousing, crisis accommodation and counselling support. Last month, Kathy told 2508 that “we are really being bombarded by referrals”. “It’s a bit hard to make sense of it, and work out the reasons, but there seems to be an increase in homelessness at the moment.” Donations are “absolutely” needed to fill the gaps, she said, and help buy essentials, such as fridges, washing machines, furniture, and food.

THE DRIVING FORCE

Helensburgh’s Sammy Mahler is the last person you’d cast as a victim. She is warm, vibrant, confident, with an infectious shriek of laughter. Sammy is a self-starter who runs her own business, Little Miss Boo Personal Styling. And, of course, she’s always elegantly dressed in the latest fashion (for our cover shoot, she wears a stunning gold choker). Yet Sammy knows first-hand the pain, confusion and horror of domestic violence. She spent four years in an abusive relationship. Today Sammy is a proud survivor, a beacon of hope for young women suffering behind closed doors. She is openly matter of fact about her bad relationship, describing how it started with emotional abuse that broke her confidence and cut her off from friends, then spiralled into physical violence. “He put me in hospital and that was enough. I just went no. “I am not ashamed. I am proud, because I did something and got out of it. “I also received wonderful counselling with a trained psychologist. That was what helped with the post trauma.” That was many years ago and after taking time to heal (“I got spiritual, into yoga, worked

So then that’s when I brought the idea to the girls and said why don’t we do the fundraiser for the domestic violence shelter? Because they are struggling.”

THE GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT

First, Sammy organised a Christmas charity drive, collating and dropping off 148 pamper packs to SAHSSI. Next, plans for Dance Till You Drop took off, with some help from her friends. Sammy and Wendy Lepre first met at a Bevans Thirroul fundraiser, where they discovered a mutual love of dancing. “We decided to join forces,” Wendy says. “Sammy wanted to support SAHSSI and we are 100 percent behind her. It’s about having fun, dancing the night away, but also raising awareness.” Wendy and Jamie have helped organise the event, taking on the marketing, graphic design, flyer printing and DJ costs. It’s set to be a great night out, with champagne on arrival, canapés, makeovers on stage, beauty tips, girlie pampering and guest speakers, including SAHSSI’s Kathy Colyer. “This is a fundraiser I’d like to do annually,” Sammy says. “I posted a thing from Mother Teresa last night on my Facebook page, saying, ‘Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love’, and I just thought that was really perfect for what this is. Every little bit helps.” 2508

race on for votes The NSW State Election is on Saturday, March 28. Voters will be choosing NSW’s 56th Parliament. Ninety-three candidates for the Legislative Assembly (Lower House) will be elected, and in the Legislative Council (Upper House) 21 of the 42 seats will be contested. An electoral redistribution means boundaries have changed: our local Heathcote electorate now covers 407.04 square kilometres, including parts of Sutherland, Wollondilly and Wollongong local government areas. Heathcote stretches roughly from Menai in the north to Wombarra in the south. From Coledale down to around Figtree is Keira (204.43 square kilometres). For detailed electorate maps, see elections.nsw.gov.au. Currently, the member for Heathcote is Liberal MP Lee Evans and Keira’s MP is Labor’s Ryan Park. But will they be back? Here are snapshots of some of the Heathcote candidates vying for your vote. To read about Keira’s candidates, go to 2515mag.com.au 2508

WARWICK ERWIN – Independent, UPPER HOUSE CANDIDATE Age: 58. Resides in: Stanwell Tops. Known for: Being in my

Community. Neighbourhood Forum 1 Co-Convenor, Bald Hill, Otford Tunnel, Christmas Lights.

Why should people vote for you? The people of NSW should be the first priority of the

NSW Government and everything else should flow from that priority. Our community needs to be listened to. State assets serve the residents and need to stay in public hands, not commercial interests. Our youth need affordable access to tertiary training to enable careers and futures that will contribute to the NSW community. Drinking water, a basic need of life, requires protection for future generations – and not just from Coal Seam Gas. We, the people of NSW, need a vision, not for four years or eight years but for 10, 50 and 100 years. Someone has to stand up and say enough is enough.

LEE EVANS – liberal Age: 53. Resides in: Seat of Heathcote. Known for: Commitment to our local community. Why should people vote for you? Born and raised in the

Heathcote Electorate, I was educated at my local public school and high school, and I am proud that my two sons have also successfully completed their education at local public schools. As a qualified chef, I trained and later taught in the NSW TAFE system. I owned a local restaurant for a number of years before taking the role of “Supply and Purchasing Manager” for the Sydney Olympic Village in 2000. After the Olympics I began a small business in Australian gourmet food distribution before being elected in 2011 as the Member for Heathcote. For nearly 20 years, I have supported my local community in various roles. These include: a member of the local P&C for five years, P&C President at a local high school for eight years and a member of Rotary for the last 10 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed these roles and particularly the associations I have made along the way. My involvement in business and the community has given me an understanding of the diverse factors that impact us all. I believe this knowledge has enabled me to strongly represent the people of the Heathcote Electorate and to be an advocate for them in the NSW Parliament. I am proud and honoured to represent the people of the Heathcote Electorate and, with your continued support, will represent you into the future.

MARYANNE STUART – labor Age: 48. Resides in: Woronora Heights. Married with two children. Known for: Parent representative

on Heathdene PreSchool Committee; Player, Manager, Coach and President of Bosco Netball Club; former student at local High Schools - St John Bosco, Engadine and St Patricks College, Sutherland; Graduate of Gymea TAFE. Why should people vote for you? We need a strong local voice. I’m concerned about the sort of society we are becoming – of haves and have nots. The train timetable, commuter car parking, traffic congestion, cuts to Emergency services, cuts to Tafe NSW courses and increases in course fees, and the sale of our Public Assets are all issues local residents want addressed. They are frustrated with the lack of action and feel they are being taken for granted. I’ve lived in the electorate for over 44 years (including Stanwell Park) – this is my community, these are my family and friends. I am a local they can count on.

2508 NEWS Natasha Watson – Greens Age: Middle aged. Resides in: Otford since 1998. Known for: Campaigning the local

and state government to protect our beautiful region from over-development and negative impacts such as CSG in our water catchment. Owner of Otford Eco website. WIRES volunteer for over 20 years, so frequently called for rescue of injured native animals, snake relocation and advice by other residents. Why should people vote for you? I love this region – and believe it should be treasured, protected and promoted for tourism. This would not only help retain the healthy green corridor of the Royal National Park and waterways, but also promote prosperity and job creation in its vastly untapped potential. I also envisage the old Helensburgh tip site, once rehabilitated, returned to the community as a recreational area for residents and tourists, including tracks for mountain bikes and other activities. Our public transport, in particular the train timetables, need re-tweaking and parking shortages addressed to ensure commuters to work and school get there easier and faster. A particular bug bear of the northern Illawarra is the continual illegal dumping of building waste along our roadside and bushland tracks, that eventually has to be removed at cost to all of the residents. I have a scheme to help end that with no cost to the rate/tax payer, and ensure building waste is disposed or recycled legally, at the authorised locations.

greg petty – Independent Age: 60. Resides in: Helensburgh. Known for: Wollongong City

Council Councillor, local businessman and being fiercely independent.

Why should people vote for you? I will to representing the

whole community, from Menai to Wombarra, Bundeena to Darkes Forest. At last residents in the electorate have a candidate prepared to represent the community, environment and small business with a commitment to full open transparency, honesty and altruistic goals, free of political party influence. My priorities include: ● Protecting the Sydney Water Catchment area and the surrounding environment, including the Woronora Dam, and Illawarra escarpment; ● To campaign against the Coal Seam Gas (methane) mining and power station – the technology used has already shown irreversible environmental and human health impacts; ● To maintain public assets and revenue generation in the hands of the community, i.e. not to support the privatisation of the “Poles and Wires”; ● To represent Heathcote in an open and unbiased way, free of party politics, by signing a set of principles of integrity, honesty and accountability in performance of duties NOTE: Greg Petty is an accountant and company secretary, who operates a business in the Wollongong area. He has owned and operated businesses successfully for almost 35 years, and at times, employed over 50 staff.

PARENTS FIGHT FOR BUS SERVICE

Helensburgh parents want a bus service from Helensburgh to Heathcote and Bosco high schools. The parents met at Helensburgh Tradies on February 6 to discuss their children’s safety, current transportation and the need for a bus service. Labor candidate for Heathcote Maryanne Stuart (above) attended the meeting. At time of writing, the group’s Facebook page – Helensburgh’s Fight for Bus Services to Heathcote and Bosco High Schools – was active and growing, according to spokeswoman Nicole Geldart. A formal complaint had also been lodged with the Department of Transport about the issue, and petitions had been made available to the public to sign, she said.

Slowly, the basin started to fill up with layers of sediments carried by ancient river systems. Some of the material was organic and turned into coal layers, which explains why coal is found at the surface to the north, south and west of Sydney, but only at depths of 900m in Sydney itself. Cooking with Rob In the first of our new series for local foodies, R&R’s Rob Lisk looks at the joy of salt. Whether you love it or hate it, most of us use it or consume it in some way or form. It comes in pink, bleached or natural. This article is to help you cook with salt to enhance the flavour of the foods you’re preparing and serving to your family and friends. Over the years of training young chefs I’ve asked them to cook a simple steak, one with no salt, the other with salt. Added right and cooked right, there’s a huge difference in the flavour. The same principle applies with salt before and during cooking of most ingredients. Here’s a few tips on how to improve the product you’re cooking or preparing. To roast chicken, pork, beef etc, rub over with vegetable oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper, herbs and garlic or mustard, depending on your preferred taste, and roast it the way you like. When blanching greens such as beans, broccoli, kale etc, add salt to the water which extracts the flavour of the vegetable. For the “old schoolers” who add salt to the meal before it’s tasted, try the above. For the new schoolers, try the Himalayan pink salt, or Maldon flakes. For the purists: grab some all natural organic –and expensive – sea salt from a faraway place on the planet. Enjoy in moderation. 2508

Gardening with sara To enjoy a lowmaintenance garden the rest of the year, you need to work hard in March, says Sara Newnham. The most sought-after garden is a low-maintenance one. If that is your style, then the least amount of maintenance would be tending to your garden twice a year, in March and September. These are the most crucial times as they are key growth periods. Feed your garden and give it a light prune before it gets too cold. Prune anything that has finished flowering or is out of shape. Trim shrubs as they grow; this will help plants to be bushier and promote more flowers in the long run. Be kind to your lawns – they have done a great job of handling summer activities. They would definitely benefit from a light top dressing if spongy or uneven under-foot. A good feed is beneficial to ensure optimum health and deep green lustre. Start considering the bulbs you’d like to have in the garden as they will need to be planted in autumn. To do this, enrich the soil to give the nutrients back to the earth that will give you amazing flower displays. If you still have bulbs in the ground from last year, be sure to give the area an extra handful of fertiliser. Most roses are putting on their last show: dead-head and feed now before you give them a major haircut when they hibernate for winter. I’m excited, I can’t believe it’s nearly St Pat’s Day. I have a few beautiful ‘Mammoth Mix’ sweet pea seeds I will be sowing. I tried this variety last year and had bunches of fragrant flowers for nearly six months. I even had them on the Christmas table centre pieces! Truly amazing that a few seeds that cost so little could give so much colour, joy and perfume. It’s time to pull out any summer crops that have done their job to make way for cool season crops. Beans, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower are just a few. Be sure to turn the soil over with composted manure before

replanting. Rotate crops – don’t plant the same crop in the same spot as this can create a breeding ground for plant disease. Plant a potato crop before it gets too cold and harvest it in spring. You can grow them in the ground or potato sacks. March means choko time in our house – we will be eating them for breakfast, lunch and tea considering the yield from one plant. The vine seems to engulf everything in its path, but only for a few months. Many weeds are thriving after the summer rain. Don’t worry, there is an organic weed spray to do the job. Amgrow Weed Blitz is fantastic. It works fast when applied on a sunny day – it’s totally natural, made out of Australian/New Zealand pine oil. No more harmful chemicals with deadly residue – give it a go! I’m very pleased with the organic choices on the market; there are great products in the Eco range that will kill just about all your garden pests. Eco biological controls are a “backyard bug” range – you buy a packet of good insects that will eat the bad ones. Win win for you and the eco system. Happy gardening! 2508

marketing workshops a hit Helensburgh’s first two workshops went well, writes Small Biz Connect adviser Annelies Voorthuis. Well, what a month we had! Small Biz Connect hosted the first of our workshops in Helensburgh. Our first “Planning Your Marketing Calendar” session was held at the Art Box creative space. A fantastic 11 people attended to work on their businesses. Due to outstanding demand, we then held a second workshop on “Planning Your Marketing Calendar” at Otford’s beautiful and serene Govinda Valley. Another 10 businesses took on the challenges for the new year, though we did get a taste of the yogi in all of us with our shoeless workshop. The key points of the workshop were: 1. Defining your target – who is your ideal client?

Tranquil planning sessions at Govinda Valley.

2. Identifying your niche – what makes you different? 3. Delivering your core marketing message – how to engage your customers. The main take-away for the businesses was a calendar that planned their promotions, events and advertising for the year. Upcoming workshops: March 1 (Build Your Website in a Day) and March 10 (Planning Your Social Media Strategy). If you would like to discuss any of these points one-on-one, please email illawarra@ etcltd.com.au or call 4223 0316. 2508

2508 NEWS

exodus survivor in otford In 1942, to avoid Japanese bombing, a group of Aboriginal children made an epic cross-country trek from the Northern Territory to Otford. 2508 meets a legend. Soon after midday on January 24, Pauline Lacelles-Smith, of Otford Pantry fame, called 2508 with a red-hot tip: Bob Randall, one of the survivors of the World War II exodus from Croker Island, off the Northern Territory coast, to Otford, was in her shop. And he was looking for the mission house where he and other Aboriginal children had stayed from 1942 to 1946. Bob’s real birth date is unknown. He and wife Barbara have estimated, after searching through official records, photo archives and consulting with his relatives, that “if the archives are accurate, then he was born in 1929 or could have been even 1928”, Barbara says. So he must have been about 12 years old when he took on that brutal cross-country trek, led by missionary Margaret Somerville, from Croker Island in the Arafura Sea across what is now Kakadu National Park, travelling from Pine Creek in the Top End to Alice Springs, Adelaide, Melbourne and finally to Sydney. Ms Somerville, the first Australian woman awarded the Battle of Australia medallion, died last year aged 101. However old Bob is now, there’s still a spring in his step and a twinkle in his eyes. Turns out Bob was looking for the site on which Govinda Valley Retreat now stands; 2508 took him there for an emotional trip down memory lane.

What was life like when you reached Otford? Those were the first white kids … we met at

Bob Randall takes a moment to reflect on those long-ago years spent in Otford as a child. the Otford primary school and, as I tell Barbara, that was the first time we started fighting them all, and flirting with the girls [laughs] … which led to the fighting [laughs]. And you went to school here? Our school years, our proper school years, were really here. We used to play Helensburgh at sport, same with Stanwell Park. We used to catch all the eels there [laughs] … it was a beautiful creek, a running creek. We used to go hunting for possum just on that side of the creek … we used to get hungry, so hungry, the mission was so poor that we had to learn very quickly what bush food could be eaten from this region. Wow, this is so amazing …We used to go everywhere. Climbed every tree? Well, every one that was worth climbing, for food. If there was fruit in this tree, we knew it. What other stuff did you get here? Well, possum was our main meat and you could get fish and eel out of the creeks. Do you stay in touch with the other kids that you were here with? Yeah, very much so, but not too many of them are alive now… How did you feel when Margaret Somerville passed away? Sad, but I knew she was very old – she was 101 – she stayed with us kids right throughout her life, she was really dedicated to her job, a beautiful person. 2508

2508 EVENTS

Holy cross school fete Everyone is invited to the primary school’s annual fete on Saturday, March 21, from 9am. This year’s theme is “One World”. So come along in an Aussie Akubra, Mexican sombrero or a Scottish kilt and help us celebrate. This year, Holy Cross Primary is excited to announce the roller-coaster will be back! We will also have all the traditional rides for young and old. Everyone loves the chocolate wheel. Fete goers can also try the putt for dough, or the chocolate toss. There’ll be head-to-toe pampering at the Hair and Nail Salon. The Art Box will have lots of craft activities for kids.

Local artist Lucy Lee will bring The Art Box to the fair.

Fabulous stalls – including the popular white elephant stall – will sell cakes, plants and books. As always, the children have been working very hard on their class acts. We are also excited to welcome live local singers and musicians. There’ll be a coffee van and the “One World” Cafe will serve tea and scones, plus there’ll be barbecue bites, including something for vegetarians. Holy Cross School Fete 2508

Blue love All’s fair in love and war if you’re a bowerbird, Australian Museum naturalist Martyn Robinson says. The female bowerbird is a bit of a princess. Like all good fairytale heroines, she likes to set her suitors a series of tasks before graciously agreeing to mate. The male must dance – to show how strong and energetic he is – and he must decorate his bower in blue, to show he is a good forager and will pass on good genes. “If you actually have a scout around on your average bushwalk,” Martyn says, “you tend to not find a lot of blue in the Australian bush. So if he can find enough of these blue things to make his bower look really good, then he’s obviously really good at seeking out things that are hard to find and will probably produce chicks that will also be able to have this ability. “But that’s the only advantage that he’s going to provide. He doesn’t actually provide any help to the female in raising the chicks, she does it all on her own.” Traditionally, bowerbirds would seek out blue flowers, berries and discarded feathers. “Things like kingfisher feathers would be sought after,” Martyn says. Humankind’s plastic has been a blessing and a curse. “Flowers and berries deteriorate fairly quickly, so you might have a blue flower for a day, and then it becomes a black shrivelled flower that has to be replaced,” Martyn says. “So all the plastic bits and pieces that we tend

2508

2508p030-31_NATURE_MARCH_2015.indd 30

to discard are a boon to the bowerbird.” Drinking straws and clothes pegs are all very well, but milk bottle rings have been deadly. “There was a blue one they found particularly attractive, but if they picked it up the wrong way it would sort of flip over their heads, so it was like a circle that went from the back of their heads into the gape of their mouth and they couldn’t spit it out. They couldn’t eat, they couldn’t drink and they just starved. “The bottle manufacturers were contacted and they very kindly made it a different shade of blue that wasn’t attractive, and the bowerbirds no longer picked it up and were no longer dying. But I actually have seen a few of the bad-coloured [darker] blue ones appearing on the market again.” ‘The satin bowerbird likes blue, things like the regent bowerbird and the great bowerbird, they like white. So you’ll tend to find that they use bleached bones and snail shells, things like that. Those ones last a bit longer [than flowers], but they’re equally difficult to find. Bower birds are not above sabotaging their rivals. “A male with a particularly good bower goes off looking for just that one extra little blue item, immediately he’s gone all the rival males in the area descend on his bower, steal his best blue objects and dismantle his bower so that it’s just a pile of sticks,” Martyn says. “And while they’re off doing their raid on his bower, somebody else is raiding theirs, and so on, and so all’s fair in love and war.” 2508

too cute!

By Symbio’s Michelle Aldred

Twelve eastern long-necked turtles have recently hatched at Symbio. The adorable hatchlings have a shell the size of a 10c piece and in time they will grow to around 25cm in length – see the amazing size comparison in our cute pictures! Eastern long-necked turtles lay about 10 eggs with brittle shells. The eggs are laid each breeding season in early summer. These turtles are found in freshwater swamps, streams and in slow-moving rivers. At certain times of the year long-necks wander in search of new homes. This often brings them in contact with roads and fatalities and injuries from motor vehicles can be common. TIP: Should you find injured native wildlife, and if it is safe for you to do so, please consider taking the animal directly to your nearest

veterinary clinic. Most vets will not charge to treat native wildlife. Use a towel or blanket to cover the animal, pick it up gently and firmly, and place it into a well-ventilated box for transport. Please keep the animal warm, in a dark and quiet environment. Do not transport the animal in the boot of your car or attempt to give any food/water. Helensburgh Veterinary Clinic can be contacted on 4294 2508. 2508

a huge celebration of art and music on March 7 will mark Articles Fine Art Gallery’s 35th birthday Owners John and Frances Vander will celebrate their gallery’s milestone birthday in style: with Yellow Tail wines, good food, live music by The Deputies (from Helensburgh), art demonstrations, and a pop-up jewellery store. “Usually we get about 1000 to 1500 people … everybody will have a good time,” John said. Celebrations will start at noon on Saturday, March 7 at 111 Lawrence Hargrave Drive. ■ In other news from that complex: Antiques is closing after 32 years (see story at right) and Articles will absorb the shop space that until recently housed Precious Fusion. 2508

dogs and kids always put safety first, writes Philip Comans. At the end of the day, the adults are in charge! It’s their responsibility to manage their dogs, and their children. Even if you aren’t a dog owner, you should teach your kids how to behave around other people’s dogs. No matter how well-trained your dog may be, it is wise to be safe when children are about. Any dog is capable of biting a child in the right (or wrong) circumstances. Dogs are simple creatures and, as they can’t explain when they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, they have only limited ways to respond. Usually a dog will try to get away from an irritating kid. If that isn’t possible, a growl may be issued. If the

CLOSING DOWN: Alison and Harry Anderson from H&A Anderson Antiques, next door to Articles Fine Art Gallery, will close down on March 29 after 32 years in that shop space. “Making the decision was the hardest thing,” Alison told 2508. What will Alison miss most about the area? “The people, the different people you meet and I’ve got regulars that come in all the time – and chatting to them and chatting to the shopkeepers … I’ll miss all that contact.” And her plans now? “Just spend more time in my Bowral shop, and have weekends to myself.”

child persists then Fido may escalate the warning to a snap. Not meant to cause injury, but sometimes coming close to the child, this snap may alarm the child (and its parents). If the snap is also ignored and Fido feels no other option exists, then a real bite is the likely next level of response. It would be great if dogs could talk and say, “Look here, little Cloe is really hurting me by pulling my fur, and if you’d be so kind as to move her that would be just grand!” But all Fido can do if he can’t move away is communicate in canine, which means growl, snap and, if pushed, bite. And you don’t know what experiences Fido has had with children. If he’s been worried or hurt before, he may bite with little or no warning. So my no. 1 tip for parents is: never leave a child or baby alone with a dog. And my no. 1 rule for children is: never pat a strange dog, even if its owner is present. 2508 Philip Comans is a dog behaviour therapist and trainer with Bark Busters Illawarra & Southern Highlands, 1800 067 710.

2508 CLUBS

soldier identified By Jenny Donohoe, Research Officer, Helensburgh and District Historical Society

Private Thomas Wood

In September’s 2508 we published an article about 2508 servicemen and an unidentified soldier. It has now been confirmed that the picture is of Private Thomas Wood who was listed as “Killed in Action on 21 September 1915” in Gallipoli. Thomas was born at Bulli, to parents James and Mary Wood. He attended the Helensburgh Public School and gave his address on enlistment as Helensburgh North, the residence of his parents. Thomas enlisted on February 2, 1915 in the 17th Battalion, C Company AIF, Regimental No: 1030. His unit embarked at Sydney per Transport A32 ‘Themistocles’ on May 12, 1915. He died at Gallipoli at the age of 23 years 11 months, and is buried at Shrapnel Valley Cemetery (Plot 1, Row D, Grave 8), Anzac, Gallipoli.

His brother Sapper James Wood, No. 5867, returned to Australia May 11, 1919. James enlisted with the AIF 3rd Tunnelling Company, on the 8th May 1916, age 32 years. He served his country on the battlefields of France. On returning to Australia, he was discharged on the November 3, 1919. James Wood married Annie Greenfield in 1912 and it was Annie’s two brothers, Stephen and Albert Greenfield, who were killed within five months of each other in France. All these families were part of the early mining pioneering families of the Helensburgh district. The society is interested in any WWI servicemen connected to the 2508 district. 2508 HISTORY

father of flight local filmmaker Geoffrey Sykes has made a documentary about Lawrence Hargrave. He fills us in on bringing science to life. Lawrence Hargrave is a great Australian and international aviation scientist, as well as a pioneering resident of Stanwell Park. His research into wing structure, kites and bi-planes, as well as rotary engines, from 1885 to 1915, helped lay the foundations for stable, safe and efficient modern flying machines. Father of Flight is a high-quality, full-length documentary about this Australian legend. It includes interviews with science and engineering experts such as Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and representatives of the Hargrave Society, as well as comments by well-known Sydney journalist Peter FitzSimons. I am the film’s director; I also produced the well-known Black in Time documentary on the history of Helensburgh. A documentary should be entertaining as well as informative, I believe. It is important to bring science to life, and capture the character, family and ideals of Lawrence. He was such an idealist for world peace, and his death in 1915 was a tragedy. There is an amazing amount of rich material – including aerial and hang-gliding as well as footage from Dayton, Ohio, where the Wright Brothers worked. Cameraman Richard Jones was able to include rich local scenery. The production commenced more than a year ago and used specially designed interiors and studio shots to recreate models and the work of Hargrave. It involved generous assistance by many individuals in its research and production. It was great to use Stephen Goldrik, an ex-Helensburgh resident, to play Lawrence. He is most convincing! Every word he says is Lawrence’s own. Productions like this require determination and a lot of work – qualities that can be found

in the life of Lawrence. We were fortunate to have a small team – something Lawrence never found. Father of Flight will be screened the Helensburgh Tradies Club on Saturday, March 7, and Friday, March 20, with two special screenings at the Hargraves’ old residence, Hillcrest, in Stanwell Park, on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28. All nights at 7.30pm, all tickets $10. Bookings and best seats can be made on www.trybooking.com/GSSS, at Helensburgh Newsagency or 16 Feet Cafe, Stanwell Park. Inquiries: 4294 4124. ocean swim prep Get ready for the 2.3km Stanwell Park Ocean swim, writes swim instructor MEL WHITESIDE. The March 22 event starts out from Coalcliff surf club and heads around the cliffs

to Stanwell Park. Many are put off by the fact that the shore is not easily accessible, so you must be a reasonable swimmer and be prepared. But this also makes it a major accomplishment when it’s done. Last year’s swim was called off due to large seas, so a big crowd is expected this year. Here’s a few training tips to get you started: Start now! The best improvements come from doing things 3-4 times a week. Start at a comfortable level and build slowly. Swim 2.3km at least once, so you KNOW you can do it. Try to swim in the open water (Coalcliff pool, Thirroul pool or the ocean) once a week. Practice ‘spotting’ buoys and landmarks. Make sure you can breathe to both sides, you

Mix up your training. Here’s a basic session: 400m freestyle with fins – warm-up 200m freestyle pull 200m (1 lap easy, 1 lap hard) 200m kick (fly, free, breast or back) x 2 200m hard – 90% 300m cool-down, your choice fins on. This session is 2.3km. You can halve the distances, only do the main set through once, or swap things around. need to be flexible as the sun and swell can get in the way. Vaseline under your arms can help as salt water can be a bit rough. Tighten your goggles a little tighter than your usual swim sessions. Crawchy’s and the Ocean Swim committee will hold two free open-water swimming workshops on Sunday, March 8 and 15 at 9am, meeting at Stanwell Park surf club. Please come along and get some tips from seasoned ocean swimmers. ■ Mel runs Crawchy’s swim school at 5/17 Cemetery Road, Helensburgh; 4294 9999. 2508

taking the plunge Clubbie Ralph Hall is a real inspiration, Heather Smith writes.

Ralph Hall

Stanwell Park lifesaver Ralph Hall first dipped his toe into the increasingly popular sport of ocean swimming in 1984 when the Cole Classic was run from Bondi. Now, aged nearly 75, he’s on target for his 14th Stanwell Park Ocean Challenge when he takes to the water on Sunday, March 22. “I’ve done every one of them,” Ralph said. “I’m one of the hundred-percenters.” He claimed a few third places in the over 60s age group in the early years of the swim, but he’s reaching the upper end of his category. “It’s getting a bit difficult keeping up with the young blokes in that age group,” he said. Ralph joined the Organising Committee for the Ocean Challenge this year and has been an integral member of the Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club since his daughter, Vivienne, started Nippers in 1995. He completed his Bronze Medallion in 2001 and has been a Patrolling member of the club ever since, completing 12 patrols each season. He is now Vice-Captain to his daughter in the Patrol 7 Group! “I recently qualified as a trainer and assessor to assist the club with training as well as assessing bronze medallions and proficiencies,” Ralph said. Although living most of the week in Balmain, his home of the past 32 years, Ralph says he would be hard pressed to see someone he knows when he walks down the street. Yet in Stanwell Park, his holiday home of the past 21 years, he bumps into someone he knows every 10 minutes. Despite his double life, Ralph and his family are firmly entrenched in both suburbs, with his swim club affiliations culminating in his position as Secretary of the Metropolitan South East Area swimming club. He is also a member of the Stanwell Park Sea Eels winter swimming club and has picked up a few bronze medals at the South Coast Winter Swimming Championships.

“But these are 50-metre events and I’m much better at the longer distances,” he said. His passion for ocean swimming took hold as soon as he dived into his first event. “It’s just exhilarating getting out through the breakers and into the ocean instead of following a black line up and down a pool,” he said. Ralph still works at the University of NSW as a Social Science Professor, teaching a few courses each year. 2508

little athletics Shannon Scutts leads a golden summer for Helensburgh Little Athletics, David Scott writes. It looks like Helensburgh & District’s Little Athletics Club may have its most successful season ever and U14 athlete Shannon Scutts has been a major part of the club’s success. The season started with the relay championships on November 22 and 23. Helensburgh took six medals with eight teams participating. Shannon teamed up with twin sister Michaela as well as Matthew Anger and Nicholas Beattie to win the gold medal in the U14 mixed 4x100 metres. This group has won medals in previous seasons, however, this is the first time they’ve won gold. Other medal-winning teams were U10, U11 and U15 (silver); and U8 and U13 all 4x100 mixed (bronze). Next on the competition calendar was the Southern Met Zone Championships on December 13 and 14. At this meet, 55 athletes qualified for the Regional Championship. Shannon won the

This was the first time our centre has won a relay at these championships. Then Shannon became one of 13 automatic qualifiers for the State Championships, finishing 2nd in the 100m at the Region 8 Championships held at Sylvania Waters on the weekend of January 31 and February 1. This was the first time she has qualified for State. The State Championships will be held at SOPAC on March 20, 21 and 22. Other automatic qualifiers were: • Krystal Blackwell – 100m, 200m, 400m • Brianna King – 800m • Tom King – 800m and 1500m • Mitchell Pepper – Discus, Shot • Dane Burgmann – Discus • Bethany Arentz – 800m • Jane Vodiciar – 400m • Tierney Dunne – 100m and 200m • Charly-Rose Dunne – 100m and 200m • Oskar Oxenbury – High Jump • Caylah Lumb – High Jump • Hayley McKinlay – Long Jump. We could have up to eight more athletes qualify for the State Championships and some of these athletes may even add events as next best competitors after all of the regions have had their carnivals. 2508 Thanks to our new major sponsor Tradies Helensburgh for their support.

paddle power The Rod Stevens Memorial Paddle was held on Sunday, February 15.

This year’s Rod Stevens Memorial Paddle was a huge success, Jenelle McWilliam writes. After it had been postponed due to large seas, the sixth annual Rod Stevens Memorial Paddle was held in near-perfect conditions on Sunday, February 15. The paddle is the second event of the Black Iron Person Challenge. First over the line was Ryan Archer in a time of 29.30, closely followed by Richard Leghissa in 29.45; Richard has won the event four times. New member Cara Van Wyk was the ďŹ rst female over the line, with an excellent time of 36.27. Cara has done very little board paddling, so we are expecting a much better time next year, once she has gained her Bronze Medallion. Another outstanding paddle was by one our younger members, Alexandra Firmstone, who was the second woman over the line. Leo Stevens, a past winner, was third this year, with a time of 32.30. The Beach to Bombie Swim, the third event of the Black Iron Person Challenge, will be held on Sunday, March 8. This event is open to the general public. 2508

Tradies social golf Barry Thompson and the Tradies Helensburgh Sports and Social Golf Club are in full swing. Tar and feathers were distinctly mentioned in the muted mutterings following the announcement of our February results. We were willing to accept that Frank Egan’s +4 for third place represented an honest effort in the conditions. However, it was only impassioned pleading by playing partners that convinced us that there was nothing dodgy about Terry Mane’s +7 second place or Mick Carroll’s scoring +8 to take top money and the Parrino’s

Pizza voucher. Torrential rain had made it a heavy track so these blokes must have played well above themselves … well done! We welcomed Travis Mc Kinlay into the fold and Dave Astill worked toward his handicap. Bob Scullion won the Helensburgh Driving Range voucher. This seems to be a regular enough occurrence to have some suggest he should move his bed out there. The match play list has been opened. If you intend playing please ensure your name is down for next month’s draw. Steve has arranged a visit to Bowral on Sunday, April 26. Details will be up on our Facebook page. We are gaining new members and, in the spirit of “the more the merrier”, we invite golfers of all standards to join us. Just turn up early and introduce yourself. Our next tournament is on Saturday, March 14 at Boomerang. Tee-off is at 7.30am. Musing: is a Double Bogie watching Casablanca then African Queen? Contact me at bazto78@yahoo.com. 2508

sunday social golf club Vicki ‘The Hair’ Little and the Club welcome some new blood to the play hard crew. I’M BACK! And right in the swing of it. Sorry to my readers who missed my column last month. They call it the silly season and we don’t play until the middle of January so I have to report on two games. The January game, which I can hardly remember due to killing off a few brain cells over Xmas, but I know Chris ‘Smells good’ Emmet came in on a count-back of 39 points and took out 1st place. Rob ‘Big brass’ got knocked off also with 39 points, and Pete ‘Doc’ Howes was 3rd with 39 points. Guys, one of you should have tried a little harder. At the end of the day it was great to play because over the Xmas period you just can’t fit in your fix of GOLF. Then our game in Feb was a beautiful day. I can remember this one! There was a huge roll-up and some great scores with lots of

2508

count-backs like last month. Also the Rinnai Cup was up for grabs, which is a yearly event and a privilege to win. We had five new faces join our crowd, which is great. One is a Scotsman named Ed – taking a bit of pressure off Dave ‘Irish’ Morris with the stirring side of it – plus there is Mick ‘The butcher’ Bowran, Frank, Chris and Dan. I’ll have to get to know them before I can name them! HA, HA! Tim ‘Pommy’ Lowe flew in with 41 points, taking home that beautiful cup. Tony ‘Beautiful’ English is doing so well at golf, they reckon he should be drug-tested before he plays. (My response to that is: sharing is caring. He had 41 points and Kevy ‘Cyclone’ Brown came in with 37 points. If he was tested for alcohol, he would be disqualified. If you would like to come and join us, we play on the first Sunday of the month at around 7.30am at Royal Boomerang. Just turn up or call Tony on 0418 863 100 or email gersback@ bigpond.net.au. 2508

bandits’ victory! The Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Club’s women’s surf boat crew fought hard to win this year’s Ocean Thunder series, coach and sweep Mark ‘Bluey’ Lea reports. The women’s crew from Helensburgh-Stanwell Park were in second spot on overall points going into the fourth and final round of the 2014/2015 Ocean Thunder Pro Surf Boat Series held at Dee Why on February 7. The BMX Bandits – Brooke Dent, Courtney Overell, Stephanie Barlow and Georgia Leach – were two points behind their rivals Austinmer. The H-SP crew rowed the series without a sponsor so they decided to compete for – and raise awareness of – the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. The day started well in 2-4ft waves and the girls progressed through early rounds with four wins and a second. They were focused, determined and everything was going well. We lead our quarter-final all the way until near the end when we were sent sideways by the wave and had to scramble to get to the beach. In a photo-finish we just touched out another crew in the run to the flag, making it into the semi-final. With that bit of luck used up we had to refocus and lead the way in the semi to reach the final. Austinmer had also made the final so we were faced with the scenario of having to win the final and hope that Austi finished no better than third. The final of Ocean Thunder is always a double race, where boats go out and back twice. It really tests the fitness of the crews. We got a great start in the first leg and reached the break with some big sets coming. We had good boat speed and decided to go for it. The girls powered through three big waves. When we had cleared the break, I could see two crews South Curl Curl and St Kilda out the back just in front of us, to my right. To my left I could see that Manly and Austinmer hadn’t made it out. This was our chance.

The crew show their winning style during a training session. Photo: Anthony Warry By the first turning can we were level with the leaders. On the way back to the beach we rowed into the lead. By the time we hit the beach for the end of the first leg we had built a good lead. Austinmer had been hammered on the first leg, breaking oars, and they were just getting off the beach when we started our second leg. We knew we just had to negotiate the break one more time. The girls were hurting but knew if they could just finish off the race the title would be ours. This time we got out the back cleaner without any big waves and the girls rowed well to increase our lead. We caught a nice wave into the beach for the run finish where we got a big cheer from the crowd. We had won the last round and, with Austinmer not finishing, we had also taken out the overall series. We feel for Austi as they are a great crew but the girls were so stoked with the win. We have been in the series for three years now and have won a couple of rounds before but to win this series was a great reward for all the hard work in training that the girls have been putting in. It was also great to win for JDRF and get them some exposure which you can see when the event airs on Foxtel. Next up for the girls is the ASRL (Australian Surf Rowers League) Open in which more than 300 crews from around Australia compete. 2508
