A DIAMOND anniversary!

Congratulations Mr James (Jim) and Mrs Mary Buggy on the occasion of their Diamond (60th) wedding anniversary. Jim and Mary were married at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cabramatta on 9th October 1954. A dinner celebration – with their children James and Maree, and grandchildren Matthew, Lachlan, Natalie, and great-grandchild Zach – marked this wonderful occasion, as did a joyous afternoon tea party with neighbours and friends. Sleepless in the park

Before dog owners try to claim our beaches I think these people should learn some neighbourhood manners and control their dogs for the other 23 hours of the day. These people who let their dogs bark out of control in Stanwell Park is arrogance at its best, have some common courtesy for the people

who live here and restore the peace and quiet we once had, the reason you chose to live here. – Kevin Morton, via email

Farewell to Otford Jack

Jack Bishop, known by some locals as “Otford Jack”, passed away peacefully at Kennett Home, Stanwell Park on 6 August 2014, just three days short of his 93rd birthday. His family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the following people for their care, kindness and friendship over the past 33 years: Firstly, to Dr Martin Gellatley and all the other doctors and staff at the medical practice who were always so kind and caring. I’m sure Jack would have credited such wonderful care with ensuring his great quality of life and longevity over the past few years. To all the staff at Kennett Home, Stanwell Park: You took such extraordinary care of him

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we know his last few months were made so much more comfortable because of you all. To Denise Binner and family: Thank you for being such an important daily contact. He valued your friendliness immensely (as well as loving his fruit!) To the staff at Helensburgh Library: He was a weekly visitor for many, many years and was always treated with patience and kindness. Thank you all. To everyone at the Newsagents, Post Office, Coles and other businesses of Helensburgh – thank you all for your kindness to “Mr Magoo” who was a common sight driving around town and managed to (somehow!) maintain his licence until the beginning of this year, enabling him to make the daily trip to Helensburgh from Otford and helping him maintain his independence and social contacts. From his wife Kathy, son Colin, daughter Jenny, son-in-law Paul and granddaughters Jessica and Erin. Thank you.

'SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE’ NEAR HOCKEY’S HOUSE

Backpackers might want to think twice about where they park their vans in Stanwell Park.

2508

2508p006_NEWS CATCH UP_NOV.indd 6

During the school holidays, the police were called to Federal treasurer Joe Hockey’s coastal residence in response to a call about a suspicious vehicle parked near the house. A spokesman for Mr Hockey told 2508 that he believed Mr Hockey had called the police. “There was … for want of a better term, a suspicious vehicle. It turned out to be … a backpackers’ van or something that the police did move along.” Mr Hockey and his family were on the premises at the time. “They were uninterrupted,” the spokesman said. “There was no security scare as such; it was just a suspicious vehicle that was moved along.” The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, September 27. Despite anecdotal reports of a special operations unit responding to the call, the spokesman said that only local police had attended the scene. “In the current heightened security … there are just no chances being taken. It was a very minor incident that the local police handled very well … and with minimal disruption.” After the alarm, one resident went to make a cup of tea, but was disappointed to find her taps were dry. A water main in The Drive had burst during the operation, she told 2508. NSW Police had not responded to a request for comment at press time.

scarborough art show success

This year’s Scarborough Art Show, held on the October long weekend, was an outstanding success, reported principal Jeff Whitham. More than 150 artists submitted work with well over 1600 people attending. This year’s art sales were almost double the previous record set last year. Art purchases ranged from under $100 to $8000. This year’s show included the Artspark school student competition. Well done to the People’s Choice award winner, Rebecca Robinson, of Stanwell Park Public School, who also won first prize in the year 5/6 category.

SKY-HIGH tribute By Rob Deacon, organiser of the 8th Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Kite Day for Public Schools. When Lawrence Hargrave was lifted 16 feet in the air by four box-kites he became the first man in history to achieve heavier than air vertical lift-off. It was November 12, 1894 at beautiful Stanwell Park Beach and it was one of the most significant breakthroughs in the development of the airplane. On the 120th anniversary of this event, hundreds of school children will participate in a

living lesson and will colour the skies with hundreds of kites as a spectacular tribute to Lawrence Hargrave. Historical aircraft will also fly over picturesque Stanwell Park – it will be an unforgettable vision. The 8th Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Kite Day is a NSW Department of Education and Communities event that brings 1000 Illawarra primary school students together at Stanwell Park to celebrate the achievements of Australian aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave. The Kite Day commences at 11am with an official ceremony in Stanwell Park Picnic area. Skydive the Beach Sydney will deliver the Kite Day Flag from 14,000 feet. At 12.30 the students move onto Stanwell Park Beach to fly their kites. At 1pm the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) from Albion Park will stage the Lawrence Hargrave-Eric Waite Memorial Fly Over in the skies over Stanwell Park. Several Historical Aircraft including HARS flagship the Super Constellation,”Connie”, will participate in the fly over. Kite Day is sponsored by the NSW Teachers Federation, Wollongong City Council, the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society and Sky Dive the Beach Sydney and the Lawrence Hargrave Centre Inc. 2508 FUN FOR ALL: The annual Festival of Flight is on at Stanwell Park Reserve, 10am-4pm, on Sunday, November 16. 2508 REPORT E AT URE COVER F

BETH’S bucket list

Photos by Anthony Warry Photography; www.anthonywarry.tumblr.com

A Stanwell Park mum and daughter are fundraising for the adventure of a lifetime. 2508 reports. Beth is 11, in Year 5 at Stanwell Park Public School. She suffers from a severe brittle bone disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type III and has been in a wheelchair since kindergarten. Her first bones broke in the womb. In her short life, Beth has had 35 fractures and spent months in hospital, including one long summer as a preschooler in a full-body cast. Yet Beth is a joyful, quirky child, who loves swimming at Coalcliff, acting in the local pantomime and busking with her flute outside Coles. She also has an incredible quality to inspire others – her mother, 32-year-old Katie Cooper-Wares, calls this “her gift”. “I call her my little guru,” Katie says. “She always says the funniest things to me. Like, if I say, ‘What should I do with my life?’, she goes, ‘Just live it.’ She is my biggest teacher. She’s just so happy, it’s ridiculous. “They used to call them cottonwool babies. Basically the idea was that you would have to keep them as safe and protected as possible. I haven’t really done that with her as much. I’ve always had the frame of mind that I’d rather she go out and do as much as she can.” Beth, whose physical condition is likely to worsen as she ages, will be taking on the world in April next year, when mother and daughter set off on a global adventure to tick off 101 things on Beth’s bucket list. Her dreams include “get a henna tattoo in India”, “kayak with killer whales off Vancouver Island” and “visit a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica”. Katie is raising funds via donation website Go Fund Me – within 48 hours of launching, her appeal had raised more than $2000.

The Big Adventure

There are several reasons for Beth’s gap year (or two). “I want to help further her ability to rise above life’s obstacles,” Katie says. “Yes, life is hard, more so with disability, but that’s OK. Nothing is impossible. You can always find a

2508

2508p010-11_COVER FEATURE_OCT.indd 10

way. I also want people to be inspired to live a joyful life, no matter what hardships they have. It’s a choice you make every day.” Biggest travel challenges for a girl in a wheelchair: stairs, escalators, platform gaps and rain. So they’ll start off with the easiest mode of transport: a car. The plan is to buy a van, explore the UK and Ireland, then drive through Europe to Russia. There they’ll board the Trans-Siberian train to China. In Australia, Beth’s treatment is covered by Medicare. On the road, she’ll need hefty health insurance, one reason Katie has set the fundraising target at $100,000. “I’m sure we’ll break somewhere along the line, it’s probably inevitable,” Katie says. “Her doctors are OK, they think I’m a bit crazy, but that’s OK …” Katie and Beth will film their trip and blog about it at bethsadventure.com. Perhaps there’ll be a documentary or a book one day…

The Bone Disorder

There are many different types of OI. “Beth’s is the second most severe,” Katie says. Her most recent break was earlier this year, when she broke bones in her hip and ankle, simply by overextending to pick up something. “A young woman with the same OI as Beth died two weeks ago,” Katie says. “She was only 19. But you just don’t know, because they are so individual… Some people with OI live till in their 60s.” What we do know is people with severe OI have a shorter life expectancy. It’s a genetic disorder and there is no cure. Today, the rare brittle bone disease has high-profile spokespeople, such as comedian Stella Young. But when Beth was born in Lismore Base Hospital in 2003, little was known. While Katie was pregnant, a specialist misdiagnosed her with achondroplasia. “Basically he showed me a picture in a book of a sausage dog, with the long body and short legs… “So they didn’t know how fragile she was – even though she was delivered by caesarean, they broke her bones pulling her out. They broke her clavicle and her arm and her rib.”

Fundraising for adventure … Beth and her mum, Katie Cooper-Wares.

It wasn’t until the next morning when Katie unwrapped her that she realised something was very wrong. “She started crying and her arm was really limp and her legs were also really really bowed…” Katie, just 21 at the time, was straight onto the phone to her paediatrician. “I was so young ... but when you’re a mum and you’ve got sick kids, when you’ve got to protect them, you become this lioness.” It was the first case of OI her paediatrician had seen, but he was a pillar of strength, Katie says. “He’d be like, you know best, you’re the mother. Use your instincts.” Katie returned home with a computer printout on how to deal with OI babies. “I couldn’t ever pick her up under the arms at all. Everything had to be padded. The midwife that came out a week after the birth to check her broke her other arm. I had to sew her all these clothes that she basically Velcro’ed into.” Mother and daughter have endured many long hospital stays. “When she was little she

Ride a donkey up a street in Greece, just like in the movie, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. 4. Swim with snow monkeys in thermal pools in Japan. Plus go to a gaming conference. 5. Eat 10 different flavours of gelato in Italy. 6. Wheel around Amsterdam for a day wearing clogs. 7. Go to a goat farm in Germany to learn how to make goat’s cheese. 8. Snorkel in Micronesia. 9. Visit Enid Blyton’s house in the UK. 10. Get a henna tattoo in India. Donate at gofundme.com/bethsadventure or call Katie on 0414 414 170. Corporate sponsors would be welcome too.

used to break her femurs quite often and they’d break all the way through, so then you’re in traction for six weeks. She was in that twice, and they were the worst. She was 2, 3. But since then she has had her legs rodded: she has titanium rods in her legs.” Katie’s family are “amazing”, she says. Once, when Beth was laid up in Westmead Hospital, her two preschool teacher aunts decorated her bed, transforming it into a mermaid’s cave. Katie spent long hospital hours gaining a degree in environmental science, and burning off steam on 10-minute sprints on the fire stairs. “You’ve got to find ways of coping. Parents who’ve spent time in hospital … you go insane, you become like a patient yourself.”

Happy school days

Katie and Beth live in Stanwell Park, supported by the close coastal community and public school. “Her principal [Keith Tomlinson] has been great. They’ve had ramps built all through the school and disabled toilets put in. She’s got an amazing aide that she’s had since Kindy … They shifted her classroom; Year 5 used to be upstairs and they put it downstairs this year. They work around it.” People see a physical disability first, Katie says. But her school friends, who’ve grown up with Beth since Kindy, are an exception. “I don’t

think they think of her any differently, and they are probably the only bunch of people that will probably think like that. “They pick her up, carry her down the beach. She’ll teach them how to play bottom shuffling races in the playground, things like that. “Beth never whinges,” Katie says. “She is really grateful and happy with small things … maybe it’s the more hardship you go through the more character you build.” Beth loves acting (she’s in the Stanwell Park Arts Theatre pantomime). She finds relief in swimming at Coalcliff almost every afternoon in summer (“She was instrumental in saving the Coalcliff pool, she was on the news and in the paper”). She is an avid reader (Enid Blyton, Morris Gleitzman) and writer (“she’s got about eight novels on the go”) and plays the flute in the school band. She also enjoys busking. “You will see her busking at the front of Coles,” Katie says. “She makes a killing. She is good! She is very dedicated. She is seriously independent. It’s made her really confident.” Beth plans to busk with her flute in Europe too. Hoping to depart in April 2015, Katie is using her savings, plus selling all she owns to finance the adventure. Donations have also been pouring in. “And the most beautiful messages, I just keep crying. Beth gets this giggle, and says, ‘I feel so loved’.” 2508

“To say I love the interaction with our property owners and their families is an understatement.”

ABOVE AND BEYOND, THE CALL OF DUTY.

We receive some lovely testimonials, but the ones I hold close are those where the property owner has been sick or doesn’t have family close by. The whole process becomes so much more than a property transaction. Here are two of them: "Living interstate meant that I couldn’t keep an eye on my Mum who was living by herself in Helensburgh. Mum wasn’t well and Julie Humphries would pop in with groceries and kind words. Mum had a short stint in hospital and asked Julie to sell her villa while she was away from her home, which she did and for a great price. Mum didn’t want to come home and have strangers walking through her villa. Julie also visited Mum in hospital. She was wonderful to my Mum and I will never forget that. You rock Julie! The best of the best. Mum is now with us in W.A., happy and healthy and we could never have done this without you." - Sharon Davis

2508p013_LJ AD_NOV.indd 13

"My brother Alan had been very ill for some time but refused to go into care. As we lived quite some distance from Helensburgh we were unable to be there all the time. Julie Humphries made it easier for us and Alan in a number of ways, like dropping in home-made meals and ensuring he was eating, keeping warm and had clean clothes to wear. She even massaged his legs and feet when the pain became unbearable. We just had to make a phone call, day or night, and we rested easy knowing that Julie would do whatever she could to ease the situation. Julie found out that Alan loved jelly iceblocks, so Julie’s daughter Alana made a batch and Julie took them to the hospital and watched him make a real mess of himself. He wasn’t eating much at that stage but he loved those iceblocks. After Alan passed away there was no question about who would look after his properties. Julie sold them for fantastic prices (even Alan would have been impressed!). Julie is such a caring and compassionate human being, running a close second is being a first class real estate agent." - Neil and Wendy Creighton

winner! Well done to Stanwell Park’s Matt Smith, who has been named Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year. His over/under winning shot, “Physalia”, was taken using a special waterproof housing that Matt designed and built himself. The prize included $10,000 cash and two spots on a National Geographic expedition around the Kimberly. “Since the announcement of the award it’s been pretty busy,” Matt said. “I’ve had to do several media interviews and film a short doco for the ABC. Nikon Australia have also been in contact and offered me a sponsorship, which I’m totally thrilled about.” Matt was also recently a finalist in “the Oscars” of wildlife photography, the Natural History Museum/BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year. year 6 camp fun A girl at Helensburgh Public School has the inside story on Year Six camp at Point Wolstoncroft. ‘BEEP BEEP BEEP!’ My loud alarm woke me up at 5.30am sharp. I felt like I wanted to turn it off and go back to sleep. I only slept for six hours that night because I was so excited I couldn’t go to sleep. I got ready in 15 minutes. Finally, it was time to say my goodbyes. I got my bags and slowly trotted 11 doors up the street to my friend’s house. We drove down to the school.

2508

2508p016-17_NEWS_NOV.indd 16

We got into two groups. I was in group two on the bus and we watched the movie Rio, sang songs and annoyed the teachers. We got to Point Wolstoncroft at five past 10 and when we got there we unloaded the bus and we got salad sandwiches. After lunch we got into three groups: yellow, red and purple. First we did archery, then the wombat hole. Archery was very fun. I got a score of 15 and we used a compound bow. It was quite hard to fire the arrows. The other exciting activities we did were sailing, the giant swing, rock climbing and canoeing. Camp was amazing, a great experience and super-duper fun.

Help! my dog pulls on the lead Don’t let Fido take you for a ride, writes Philip Comans. It’s annoying when Fido leads the way. Why, oh why, you dream, can’t he be like that dog over there, walking next to its owner on a lovely, relaxed and loose lead? Well, Fido insisting on being the boss of the walk is a symptom of a more fundamental issue that, if addressed, will improve his behaviour, and make for a more relaxed, content and peaceful dog (and home). Fido is doing what comes naturally. He is acting on an ancient instinct that centuries of domestication have not removed. Fido is taking on the huge responsibility of being the Top of the Pack. It means he needs to lead the rest of his pack (you and your family) when it leaves the den (your home or yard) on its important

1

expeditions into enemy territory (anywhere outside the home). He needs to be ever vigilant and focus on external events that might pose a threat to his travelling pack. His job includes checking out who has been near his den (sniffing every post) and marking his territory. But frankly Fido would love to give up the position and be able to relax under the strong leadership of the better pack leader – you! So what to do? One of the best and easiest ways to reestablish your position as pack leader is to make sure Fido does not go out the front door or garden gate in front of you on walks. Make him wait. Once you are on the other side of the threshold then it’s his turn. Simple! Keep this up and Fido may well realise that it’s not his job to be Boss of the Walk. 2508 Philip Comans is a dog behaviour therapist and trainer with Bark Busters Illawarra & Southern Highlands, 1800 067 710.

Gardening with sara It’s time to stop and smell the roses. And the lavender, the Corsican mint and the penny royal, writes Sara Newnham. Our home has recently been uplifted by a Rothmannia globosa planted near our front door. Its soft, vanilla flowers have been blooming for weeks and every time I open the door sweet drifts of spring waft through our house. So, I have decided to ditch fake toxic air fresheners and to plant as many fragrant plants as possible. The first step is to identify smells to cover up around the home. Then strategically plant outside, as close to the source as possible, such as near windows or doorways. It’s also a good idea to place vases of fragrant foliage or blooms indoors, such as near pets’ beds, bathrooms and wherever stinky teenagers or kids congregate. The right foliage can also help repel insects. Place a bunch of citronella or tea tree near the barbecue or, when dining outdoors, encourage guests to brush the foliage on their clothes or crush a few leaves to release their repellent oils. Penny royal is a fragrant foliage ground cover that repels fleas and ticks. I have planted it in my lawn and around where pets like to lie. Most fragrant foliage plants need to be brushed against or touched to bring out their beneficial perfume. It’s good to plant these

along pathways near playgrounds. Wonderful, sensory plants for kids to touch and smell are rose geranium, herbs, pineapple sage or ‘Fruit Salad’ salvia (which is also very tasty). I have planted Corsican mint around the base of my kids’ slippery dip as a ground cover they can walk on to release an amazing peppermint fragrance. Plant lawn chamomile in areas you’d like to sit on a soft carpet of fragrant lawn – it has a calming effect. I once used it in a meditation space in a yoga lover’s garden. Lavender near the clothes line is lovely – let the laundry brush against the plants; sheets will smell great! Good fragrant choices for summer include ‘Mr Lincoln’, ‘Heaven Scent’ or, my favourite, David Austin roses. Ground covers of sweet alyssum smell of pure honey. Plant stock: it’s a perfect cut flower. Rondeletia is a very powerful, fragrant large shrub. Use Brugmansia, Angel’s trumpet, as a small feature tree. Spectacular climbers such as hoyas and stephanotis, shell gingers, lilies and cardamom are tropical beauties. If you are unsure what would work, contact me or your local nursery. It’s time to stop and smell the roses. Happy gardening!

meet baby bradley By Symbio’s Michelle Aldred Ever wondered why alpacas spit? I know from first-hand experience … they value their space. A lot. When humans or other alpacas get too close, alpacas spit to express displeasure. Just before spring arrived, our mum Ivy, who has been with us for three years here at Symbio, welcomed her first newborn, Bradley. I have to say, a newborn alpaca is about the cutest thing I have ever seen, especially when they are learning to stand. Bradley is thriving, and at the age of six and half weeks is now galloping around the paddock with proud mum watching on – also very cute! We have a video of this on

our Facebook page if you’d like to see it. Bradley joins our two resident males, Boston and Latte, while Ivy, Coco and Princess Tahini are our females. Alpacas have an 11-month gestation period, and will normally delay the birth until there are favourable weather conditions. Not our Ivy, though, she gave birth during a wild storm in which 100mm of torrential rain fell overnight! A baby alpaca is referred to as a cria. They are naturally curious and intelligent and – if you let them approach you, rather than rush at them – they can be quite affectionate. 2508

2508 BUSINESS Guided walks … from left, Brad Chilby and Alex Marlos.

power of two Photographer Brad Chilby and Sublime Point restaurant owner Alex Marlos are leading Illawarra Trekking Adventures. They met thanks to Google.

ALEX SAYS:

Prior to purchasing Sublime Point, I always wanted to start a bushwalking business, with a photography mix, and being from a restaurant background include camping overnight with a chef cooking for the bushwalkers – for example, homemade dampers – and the sky would be the limit with food, depending on the budget. Once I purchased Sublime Point, everything fell into place, the only thing missing was someone like Brad. I went on to Google photographers in the local area, saw Brad’s inspirational work online, called him. Once meeting with Brad, his passion for both activities confirmed to me that he was the right partner for the business. We have made a great team ever since. What I like about Brad’s photography is Brad, and his day-to-day passion for taking that next unique local photo. With his bushwalking passion, that really leaves him in a league of his own. The Sublime Point walk is apparently one of the steepest walks you will come across, with

2508

multiple ladders bolted into the face of the rock with over 1000 actual steps. Once you get to the bottom of the trail, you almost feel as if you’re in a rainforest setting and not knowing you are only two kilometres from the main highway and two kilometres from the ocean. There is an array of bird life, wallabies and other native animals. The Sublime Northern Bushwalk is flat, level, accommodates most ages and fitness types. There are a lot of vantage points, including views as far as south as Kiama and as far north as southern Sydney. It’s known for its bird life, it’s a nature photographer’s heaven. Both of us are extremely passionate, with food, bushwalking and photography. Brad and I seem to have a lot in common, we can float ideas from day to night and we want to make a difference in the local area and inspire people by introducing the bush to the people. Some of the Illawarra people seem to forget about the northern escarpment, which has so much to offer.

BRAD SAYS:

I have been doing photography professionally for seven years and I am self-taught. I have always had an interest in bushwalking, mountain climbing and exploring the escarpment and have been doing so since I was very young. I specialise in Australian landscape

2508 BUSINESS photography, with a major focus on the Illawarra. I was already planning bushwalking and photography lessons on the Illawarra escarpment. Alex saw one of my photos from Sublime Point that I had posted on Facebook, with a bit of information about some of the hiking adventures I do to get the photographs I take. He then gave me a call to have a chat about it, we met up and realised we both had very similar plans and that both of our businesses could work well together to offer something unique to the Illawarra. On our bushwalks we photograph the sweeping views of the Illawarra from many of the great lookouts along the track. Waterfalls, rainforest scenes with cabbage tree palms and tree ferns, Gymea lilies in the forest, native flora and whatever else our customers find interesting. I teach them how to compose a shot, how to shoot in different weather conditions and times of the day, how to use manual camera settings, including aperture, ISO, shutter speed, and I run through all the options in the camera’s menu.

Sublime Point Cafe is in an amazing location with one of the best views in the Illawarra. We offer a restaurant style of food on the bushwalk as part of the package … Alex is a very good business operator and is very passionate about Sublime Point and the local area … between us we have developed many plans and ideas to expand the concept. Illawarra Trekking Adventures has two walks on Saturdays and Sundays: Austinmer Ladder Track ($80pp, depart 6am) and Sublime Views Track ($99pp, 11am). 2508 NEWS Who needs a feed? You would be surprised … Families and individuals who have been hit by a sickness in the family, medical bills can be extremely high so food can get pushed to the bottom of the list, or the bread winner in the family losing their job, or a wife who has escaped her abusive partner and left the house, taken the kids, with nothing but the clothes on their back, these are some of the families we are supporting. It has also come about that we have helped people who have lost a loved one and find it hard to cope with the shopping, or people who have been in an accident by providing their carers with food to cook for them while they are incapacitated. The list goes on... By working in partnership with various organisations we have supplied emergency food parcels and food to nearly 1000 families both directly and indirectly. We are also finding that we have become the “channel” for unwanted or excess food. At Need a Feed we have built up a strong network of partner organisations who we can direct this food to. Organisations like Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre who cook for hundreds in the community each week on a very, very tight budget appreciate any extra food that comes their way. 2508 BUSINESS

why you need a mentor business mentors can help you turn ideas into reality, writes Annelies Voorthuis.

Being a start-up and small business operator can be isolating and overwhelming. Issues about trust, confidence and competition can also make it harder for business owners to open up and talk to others. This is where the role of a business mentor, an advisor or coach can assist. A mentor is someone who serves as a counsellor or guide. They can offer fresh, experienced insight and have no emotional attachment to your business. They will can provide you with a step-by-step guide to move your business to the next level. An example of where Small Biz Connect has helped a local business is Michael Berghuis

from Evolved Bush Fire Protection, who met with a Small Biz Connect advisor. Michael was looking for a fresh approach to promote his Bushfire Protection Sprinkle System. He had tried marketing via flyers, a website and social media. While discussing the system and how it protects a house during a bush fire, it hit Michael that he needed to target women! Since the change in marketing strategy Michael‘s business is growing. So, an independent mentor can reflect ideas, produce solutions and support their implementation in a way that few insiders could do. Where can you find business mentors? * State Government business mentor programs, such as Small Biz Connect * Business networking organisations. * Asking friends, relatives and colleagues. 2508 Annelies works for the Enterprise & Training Company, which offers mentoring in the Illawarra via the Small Biz Connect program. So the ones that leave to creatures travel via Air. summer to beat

escape the conditions that would be too harsh for them to survive aren’t the same ones that return – it’s their greatgreat-grand-offspring.” In Australia, Bogon moths are great aerial migrators, fleeing the heat by flying from Queensland’s Darling Downs down the Great Dividing Range to the Australian Alps. “That’s a lot of beating on very tiny wings,” Martyn says. “They go into the coolest part of the country, up in the Australian Alps, and they fatten up along the way by feeding on nectar and they wait out the hot summer months before travelling back and, in that case, it is the same individuals that go back.”

the heat.

“The most all encompassing medium that life can travel in is air… it touches the surfaces of all the other mediums by which you can travel. Air travellers get about the furtherest,” Martyn says. Birds are famous for their great migrations. “A classic example of that is the Arctic tern, some individuals go for a 71,000km annual round trip. Over in America, you have got the little Rufous hummingbirds, which are barely the size of your little finger, and some of those can travel distances of 7060km, one of which was banded and recorded as doing just that.” Four migratory bird species that are now turning up in our area are: Channel-billed Cuckoo, the Eastern Koel, Black-faced Monarch and Rufous Fantail. The fantail returns to breed here in late spring/summer, then flies north for winter in March or April to avoid the cold and possibly because flying insects, their food source, are less abundant and active in winter.

butterfly magic

Butterflies are also long-haul travellers. In the US, Wanderer butterflies will travel a round

Accidental tourists

The wind may also catch animals and blow them off course. “You can end up with that insect, exhausted, reaching land somewhere far from where it started out,” Martyn says. “So a number of our Australian butterflies and moths, and even flying foxes, have turned up in New Zealand. “If they can find a suitable food plant there where they can lay their eggs, and the

24

2508 NATURE caterpillars can survive and go through to maturity on those new plants, you’ve got a new colony started, or potentially a new colony.”

Ballooning spiders

Wings are not compulsory for air travel. “Spiders sort of drift with the air currents,” Martyn says. “Usually young spiders, but sometimes larger ones as well, on windy days, they will release a streamer of silk up in the air. When the wind catches it, they just let go and the wind will sort of carry them … of an evening, usually the wind activity stops, the warm air starts to sink and if they’re lucky there will be land underneath them… “They have recorded little spiderlings travelling on gossamers of silk three kilometres up from the earth’s surface … it’s called ballooning. “If you go out into a farming area, go out into a paddock early on a misty morning and have a look, you sometimes get the phenomenon known as angel’s hair, where everything is covered in gossamer. The gossamer is these little ballooning silk lines that the spiders have travelled on.” When this fantastical stuff picks up the dew, it becomes visible.

It’s raining sea monkeys!

Tiny eggs – typically the size of a grain of sand – can also travel via air. Usually, they’ll be the eggs of aquatic animals. “So things like brine shrimp, which are sold in the shops as sea monkeys, and some of the little water fleas and tadpole shrimps,” Martyn says. “If you get hot westerly winds, they will actually blow the eggs, sometimes across the Great Dividing Range and we end up with these little desert crustaceans appearing in puddles around Sydney. That usually gives people a bit of a shock, particularly if it’s something like the tadpole shrimp, which can

be about as long as your middle finger.” In Central Australia, the eggs of some species can survive for decades, in temperatures below freezing and above boiling, until they finally get washed into a puddle by rain and conditions are right for them to hatch.

winged Seeds

Plants usually let their seeds do the travelling. Dandelion, pine or gliding vine seeds can travel for kilometres if the wind is right. “That’s why so many of the weeds are so widespread, because many of the weeds have those fluffy seed heads, like the thistles, the dandelions,” Martyn says. In our area, look out for Callitris muelleri (Illawarra pine). The genus is known for its winged seeds. “They’ve got that long fin on the seed, so when they come out of the pod they spiral in the wind, which slows their fall,” Martyn says. “If the wind is blowing and catches that slowly falling seed, it will transport it some distance, as long as the gust lasts.” Next month: how life travels via land. 2508

Festival of Flight

By Wayne Turner

Stanwell Park Arts Theatre (SPAT) started way back in 1974 with their first play, a Christmas Pantomime called Babes in the Wood, written and directed by Joy Wiedersatz, a local teacher and librarian at Stanwell Park Public School. To celebrate our 40th birthday, we are planning to have an anniversary night with a show and party on November 22 in the CWA Hall. We plan to invite SPAT members from the early years, those who started SPAT and kept the flame alive. To close our 40th year, we are rehearsing the same play that SPAT started with, Babes in the Wood. It’s directed by Lauren Mitsak, who played Robin Hood in the original play back in ’74! Stanwell Park’s annual Festival of Flight is back in the beach reserve on Sunday, November 16. The festival raises funds for the CWA and pays tribute to aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave (hence the name of our main coastal road). Hargrave became the first man in Australia to fly “16 feet” (hence the name of a local cafe). He did this using specially designed box kites on November 12, 1894. To celebrate, there will be historical displays, flight-related activities and more than 50 market stalls. The CWA members will be selling delicious cakes, jams and plants. Live entertainment starts at 10am with the Burgh Big Band. Local country music singersongwriter Jackie Dee and her band will be onstage for the grand finale at 4pm. 2508

2508 CLUBS

jolly good work, nina By Northern Illawarra Neighbour Aid manager Tracey Schroeder Now in our 11th year, we are still going strong! We are looking forward to our two Christmas luncheons that are planned for the 5th and 12th of December at Panorama House and the Cliffhanger Restaurant. We are also very excited about what’s coming up in 2015! Northern Illawarra Neighbour Aid Inc. (NINA) runs the Café Club program and provides its customers with opportunities for social interaction, friendship, entertainment, activities and to enjoy talks by guest speakers. We also organise outings on the second and fifth Thursday of the month to different venues.

view club report By publicity officer Virginia Dowson At our meeting and luncheon in September, we were entertained by two representatives from the Shen Yun Performing Arts, who gave a PowerPoint presentation of their colourful cultural performances, which go back 5000 years in China. They are based in New York, but will be giving performances in Sydney in February. In October, we were looking forward to the ladies from “Poetry and Pretty Things” telling their stories and poems, and showing their craft items. Committee members, please note that the next meeting will be January 20, 2015, 10am.

Christmas is coming … Jill and John, two dedicated volunteers, pictured at last year’s Christmas luncheon. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for clients and volunteers alike to celebrate the end of the year in style!” Tracey says.

One such outing involved a scrumptious barbecue at Woronora Dam on October 9. The 25 people who attended all agreed it was a delightful day with perfect weather and wonderful company. To find out more about NINA or Café Club, call Jessica or Tracey on 4294 1900 or visit www.nina.org.au 2508 News has come through about the VIEW National Convention next year. It will be mainly held in the Novotel, Wollongong, from September 11-13, as well as other venues for special events, including the Chifley, Wollongong. The theme is “Women of Influence”. There will be lots of stalls, raffles and sample bags. Our little club will be responsible for the last two items. There is a morning tea on the Sunday and it is open to the public. More details later. Chris is taking bookings for Dirty Dancing, 2pm matinee, Lyric Theatre, February 21, 2015, pay by November 18, and Les Miserables, 2pm matinee, Capitol Theatre, April 25, 2015, pay by February 20, 2015. Be quick for these tickets. Please phone Chris on 4294 1103 for details. The next luncheon will be our Christmas Party on Tuesday, November 18, at the Centennial Hotel, with a Hawaiian theme, a trivia quiz, lucky door prizes, raffles, and Secret Santa. So, ladies, join us for our final happy luncheon this year, and wear your colourful muumuus or tropical shirts. Please phone Nerida for bookings or cancellations on 0429 004 298, by November 12. 2508

2508 CLUBS

Big birthday for probus publicity officer Jean Doherty reports on the 10th birthday outing. As we drove from Stanwell Park to Belmore Basin that morning, the coastal houses, cliffs and sea all hung in mist. We remarked how lovely it was. It was the Helensburgh & District Probus Club’s 10th anniversary and about 60 members and friends came to celebrate. The Harbourside Restaurant was an ideal choice for our group. We had great views to the lighthouse, the little boats, beach, harbour and cliffs beyond. There were no stairs to negotiate, parking was good and the temperature spot on. The chatter was amicable and loud, but we could hear each other! Well done! The food was good, a choice of three dishes for all three courses. The staff were friendly and efficient. The courses were all spaced enough to allow some mingling in between. Drinks were available at the bar. All in all, this gave rise to a

satisfied feeling of having a leisurely meal amongst good friends. President Joan Gardner spoke, telling us that Mark Henderson, one of the founding members, was to be awarded Life Membership for the consistent and tremendous contribution he has made to the club. He is the club’s first life member. Congratulations Mark. Also, Joan introduced the remaining eight founding members and, with her usual flair, recited some poetry appropriate to the occasion. Often it is more difficult to make friends as one grows older, but Probus gives us the opportunity to make new friends through many wonderful activities, such as meetings, outings, dining, walks, sports, theatre parties and holidays. (Have you noticed some of your best friendships started through shared activities?) Hopefully in another 10 years, good friends will be celebrating our 20th anniversary. 2508 See page 26 for meeting details.

boat crew wins surfboat captain for helensburgh stanwell park SLSC, Mark Lea, reports that crews have been training hard. After one of the best seasons on record for the boaties – the Open Women’s crew came second and the U19 Men’s crew came fifth at the Australian Championships – they are keen to improve this year. The Open Women’s crew have set their goals on going one better and are aiming for gold at this season’s Australian Championships at Kirra Beach next April, as well as defending their Australian Surf Rowers League gold medal from last season. The crew has just finished a full pre-season of weights, cardio and rowing to prepare them for the season ahead. The first hit-out of the year was a 12km surfboat marathon against about 30 other crews, along the Georges River, from Revesby to St George Sailing Club under Captain Cook Bridge. The girls rowed superbly to win the Open Women’s division by more than four minutes, in a time of 1hr 23min. A strong run-in tide and hot weather made the going tough for all crews but our girls led from start to finish.

The Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Open Women’s crew doing what they do best – going hard. Also competing for HSP was a mix-and-match crew of rowers from our U23 girls, U19men and Open Women’s crews. This crew, rowing together for the first time, battled hard and finished third in their division. The first surf carnival for the year is on November 8 at Corrimal Beach; Open Women’s, U23 womens and U19 men will compete. Like the club at Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club and visit the website at www.stanwellparksurfclub.com/web/. 2508

stanwell scramble

Get ready for the Stanwell Scramble, a fun walk or run along Stanwell Park Beach, on Sunday, November 30. The event, organised by the HelensburghStanwell Park Boaties, is aimed at encouraging family participation. You can walk or run one lap (2km) or three laps (6km) in soft sand events, or run the 75m sprint skins event. The skins event is an exciting concept: races are run on a knock-out basis and the last two remaining sprinters race head to head. Races are run consecutively, with the starter’s gun firing every minute. Great fun to compete in and fantastic to watch!

2508

walkathon! A sombrero, a cowboy hat and an egyptian mummy were some of the sights at Stanwell Park Public School’s Walkathon. Held on October 10, the fundraiser had an international theme. Children grabbed red cardboard “passports” and walked laps of the school grounds to receive stamps at “check points”, which parents had decorated. The Europe table even had cheese and biscuits. The Walkathon raised almost $4000 for the school’s P&C. Organiser Kylie Park said: “The students appeared to be having a ball and some of them even became quite competitive in the end, desperately logging as many countries on their passport as they could!” 2508

This bmx brother-sister duo are getting ready for 2015, Saya Sakakibara reports. The BMX World Championships were held at the end of July, and with 55 riders in my class – 15 Girls – I came away with the win for the second year in a row. It was an amazing day and it was my fourth World Championship! In October, we competed in the State Championships, held over two days. Day 1: I raced a 14+ Pro Women class, crashed in the final and came 8th but I was happy with my efforts. On day 2, I raced in the 15 Girls class – and I won for the eighth year in a row! At the awards night on day 1, I was lucky enough to receive the Female Senior Rider of the Year! It was an amazing feeling as supporters from NSW had voted for me. Now my training has eased off a bit but I am keeping active. I’m looking forward to getting

Kai and Saya Sakakibara. Photo: Anthony Warry Photography back into serious training to get ready for a busy year next year. ■ Kai, Saya’s brother, fractured his finger while overseas and that’s forced him off the bike for “the past couple of months” he told 2508. “I also had my HSC to manage, so the injury actually came at a good time, as I had more time to dedicate to studying.” 2508

TIGERS’ great start Teams have started well, reports Helensburgh Cricket Club publicity officer Sean Mulally. First Grade’s premiership aspirations are on the right track with two resounding victories. The Tigers’ first round clash was a one-day game against Corrimal. Despite being in big trouble at 5/31, the side clawed its way to 9/146, thanks to Man of the Match Steve Blissenden’s 55. The side went on to dismiss Corrimal for 115, thanks to Blissenden’s 6/49. The Tigers defeated Northern Districts in round two. It was the side’s first outright win in a number of seasons. An unbelievable run chase of 164 in just under 30 overs on the final day

sealed the win. The McCrae brothers, who posted a 104-run partnership, led the charge. Second and Third Grade are also undefeated. Standout performances by Hayden McCrae in Second Grade, scoring 104 in round one, and Matt Forshaw, taking 6/40 in round two, ensured the victories. In Third Grade, four wickets to John Lynch and 55 runs to John Walker sealed the round one victory. In round two, captain Greg Heffernan’s 76 not out was the highlight in an all-round team performance. On December 20, HCC will host a Charity Day, with two Twenty20 matches being played, to raise money for Sydney Children’s Hospital. well done, juniors What a great year 2014 has been for the Helensburgh Junior Rugby League Club. We had 164 players this year, including six young ladies, something we hope to build on. Our U17s took out the Illawarra GF against Dapto. Congratulations to Mark Dee and his boys – you all did us proud. Our U10s won their GF with a great performance. Well done to Andy and his boys! We again supplied our fair share of representative players: U13 Illawarra reps: Matthew Anger & Jackson Hall; U14 Illawarra CRL rep: Alex Sargent; U16 Illawarra CRL reps: Shea Innes & Dave Lawrence; Illawarra Harold Matthews rep: Jonathan Griffiths; Illawarra SG Ball rep: Phillip Astill; U18 Illawarra CRL reps: Phillip Astill, Corey Phillpott, Dylan Issa & Chris Slater-Raptis; U18 Redbacks: Corey Phillpott & Chris Slater-Raptis. Alex Sargent trialled for Harold Matthews – an U14 being asked to try out for U16 Reps! What a huge effort! Phil, Corey, Chris and Dylan trialled for SG Ball, with Phil making the squad. Congratulation Phil! We had a heap of 100- and 150-game recipients: 100 games: Hayden Shoemark (U14);

George Whayman (U14); Shannon Austin (U15); Shay Brady (U17); Jake Lowder (U17). 150 games: Shea Innes (U16); Adam Dee (U17); Bryce Blackwell (U17). Clubman of the Year 2014 was back-to-back winner Phillip Astill. Phil puts in a phenomenal amount of work on and off the field. The Club Services Award went to a very deserving Nicole Oldfield. Congratulations! Player of the Year 2014 was Jackson Mattock. What a talent this young bloke is, always giving his all for his U13 mates. He has a huge future. Our Club Committee needs a huge pat on the back for their hard work. Also, without our sponsors’ generous support this season would not have been the success it was. In other news, we’ll unveil a new playing strip for next year. The AGM is on November 18, 7pm at the Tradies. Any coaching applications must be in before November 16 and can be submitted by email (presidenthjrlfc@gmail.com) or post it to PO Box 91 Helensburgh 2508. Our regos will be at the end of January. With what we offer for your rego dollar, plus the fact we are the Illawarra’s best family club, let’s get all our boys and girls playing the Greatest Game of all. Go the mighty Tigers! 2508

touch reps impress! Seven local touch footy players were part of Australia’s historic 10-7 Trans-Tasman series win! In cold, windy conditions in Porirua, near Wellington, our five teens – Tyra Thwaite, Kobe Bell, Hayden Shoemark, Jayden Thwaite and Adam Dee – played well against much larger NZ sides but didn’t win their age groups. The Mixed 15s (Kobe, Hayden and Tyra) lost 2-1 in three very close games. The Mixed 17s (Jayden and Adam) went down 3-0 in their series. Our adults were victorious: the Men’s 40s (Adam Thwaite and Jason Bell) won 3-0 and Mixed Golden Masters (Donna Thwaite) 2-1.

We provide a professional friendly storage solution for local Residents and Businesses. We are conveniently located at Heathcote & Helensburgh, and offer a great range of short and long term units, in various sizes to suit your needs.

the workers golf club Geoff H wins, Jammu enjoys divine intervention and Barry Thompson flukes a third! Core blimey! The newly cored greens made putting a nightmare during our October tournament. Geoff Hammonds used his accumulated skills to overcome the adversity and walked away with the Parrino’s Pizza voucher and first prize money. Jammu Fagerström came a deserving second and I fluked enough to come third. Bob Scullion’s won the Helensburgh Driving Range voucher, so that will help him prepare for next month’s championship round.

Laurie Thompson surged in a late finish to overcome Jammu by one hole in the match-play final. Congratulations and commiserations; it was a great match played in the sporting spirit always displayed by these two friendly rivals. There could be moves to have Jammu’s score on the 7th stricken from our records. His misshit skipped across the water surface, hit a garden edging, bounced onto the green and allowed him an easy putt. We attribute this to possible divine intervention, which is forbidden under the by-laws of our club. We have two November tournaments, both at Boomerang – double the fun. The first is on Saturday, November 15. Tee off 7am. This is the third championship round. We tee off at 7.45am on Saturday, November 29 in a Stableford event. If you enjoy your golf, come and join us. Just turn up early and introduce yourself; you’re assured of a warm welcome. Musing: He who has the fastest golf cart never has a bad lie! Sunday social golf club Fabulous wins the coveted Bell plate, Kung Fu kicks a puddle’s a*** and Vicki “The Hair” Little gets the biggest stirrer. We had plenty of starters for a fine and beautiful long weekend. I had the company of the biggest stirrer of the group, Kevy “Cyclone” Brown, which was quite amusing, and the two quiet achievers, Craig “Kung Fu” Nichol and Chris “Smells great” Emmit. It’s nice to play with great blokes as they all are. One incident tickled my fancy when Kung Fu found himself in a spot of trouble on the 7th hole with a puddle of water on the edge of the dam. Instead of taking a drop like most players would, he carefully studied the situation and hit it out well, but absolutely saturated himself!

Lucky it was a hot day. Freddie “Fabulous” Tilden took out the day again with 39 points and he also won the Brenda and Normie Bell Plate. I think everyone would have liked to have their name engraved on the plate this year as Normie passed this year. What a great bloke! Kung Fu came in second place – what a great game he had. Rob “Indiana” Jones, who we haven’t seen for a while as he’s been a world traveller, was third. We have the semi-finals in match-play in November between Dave “Never Late” Flewin and Rob “Big Brass” Miller. Whoever wins will play Dave “Irish” Morris. From The Confused Golfer: Golf is a passion, an obsession, a romance, a nice acquaintanceship with trees, sand and water. 2508

SOCCER STAR ON THE RISE Helensburgh teen Christian Papas is headed for the A-League if he continues his meteoric rise. Christian Papas, 13, is a left winger in cracking form on the field – such great form that St George Football Club signed the youngster to a player’s contract during the most recent school holidays. The humble lad told 2508 when we contacted him that he was “very happy”. Training starts at St George FC in a few weeks’ time, ahead of the next season of the Premier Youth League, which starts at the end of March. Christian’s goal is to play for Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League and then for Manchester United in the Premier League. 2508
