Kliptown è un vasto insediamento informale che sorge alla periferia della SOuthWEstern TOwnship (Soweto), a una ventina di chilometri da Johannesburg. L’importanza del luogo – rifugio storico dell’African National Congress e luogo nel quale è nata la Freedom Charter (1955) – è in violento contrasto con il degrado che caratterizza l’area, nonostante i lavori di riqualificazione avviati nel 2005. Lo storico cinema Sans Souci, uno dei pochi luoghi destinati all’intrattenimento della popolazione di colore durante i decenni dell’apartheid, è stato distrutto da un incendio nel 1994 e, da allora, i resti della struttura originaria sono stati utilizzati dalla popolazione residente come materiale da costruzione riducendo il complesso in un mucchio di macerie. In seguito a un’inchiesta avviata nel 2002 e nonostante il fatto che del fabbricato fosse ormai rimasto ben poco, emerse che il cinema costituiva ancora un importante “luogo della memoria”. Nell’ambito del programma volto alla trasformazione di Kliptown in un Eco Museo, basato principalmente sull’interazione fra visitatori e residenti, e nel tentativo di riaffermare il sito del vecchio cinema nella nuova veste di aggregatore sociale, il luogo che ha visto esibirsi star del calibro di Miriam Makeba e Abdullah Ibrahim ha ripreso vita utilizzando un insolito materiale da costruzione: le relazioni umane. Sfidando le definizioni proprie della museografia contemporanea come della critica architettonica, il progetto, dunque, si prefigura come un percorso volto a ricostruire tanto la memoria del sito quanto la struttura stessa, assegnando ai progettisti il ruolo di coordinatori di questo percorso formativo collettivo. Bandito un approccio progettuale top-down, si è proceduto adottando modalità operative flessibili, che trovano la propria ragione nella ridefinizione costante di obiettivi a breve termine. I fondi messi inizialmente a disposizione per la realizzazione del progetto sono stati affidati alla comunità locale che, istituito il Kliptown Our Town Trust, ne usufruisce procedendo nella costruzione compatibilmente con l’affluire di nuovi finanziamenti. — Kliptown is a sprawling collection of informal settlements on the outskirts of the South-Western Township (Soweto), twenty kilometres away from Johannesburg. This place’s significance – historic refuge of the African National Congress, and the place where the Freedom Charter was signed (1955) – is in stark contrast to the urban decay that plagues the area and lingers despite the renewal efforts launched in 2005. The legendary cinema Sans Souci, one of the few authorized sources of entertainment for the black population under apartheid, burned down in 1994, and since then the local residents have picked its charred remains clean to scavenge for building materials, leaving it little more than a pile of rubble today. Nevertheless, following an investigation carried out in 2002, it emerged that the practically non-existent cinema was still considered to be an important “memorial”. It had, after all, hosted performances by the likes of Miriam Makeba and Abdullah Ibrahim. So it was that while Kliptown itself was being transformed into an ecomuseum, based mainly on the interaction between visitors and residents, the old cinema – now given a new role as a social aggregator – was brought back to life thanks to a most unusual construction material: human relationships. The project challenged the received wisdom of contemporary museology and architectural criticism, and took the form of an experience that would reconstruct the memory of the site as well as the building itself, with the architects in the role of coordinators of a collective journey to awareness. The top-down approach to the project was discarded in favour of flexible operating models, with the constant redefining of short-term objectives as their raison d’etre. The funds that were initially provided to realize the project were entrusted to the local community, which established the Kliptown Our Town Trust. The trust draws on these funds to proceed with the construction, the arrival of new financing permitting.
