Unwind in the wilds of Dunedin

Looking to explore the roads less travelled for your summer getaway this year? Cruise down stunning coastal highways and through tussock-lined roads to boutique hinterland hideaways and seaside sanctuaries. Ideal for families or couples, Dunedin city and its picturesque outer hamlets are perfect escapes away from overcrowded holiday hotspots.

SEASIDE ESCAPE

The drive down the north coast into the Dunedin boundary is spectacular. Charming settlements frame the bays and inlets. On a summer’s day, the sheltered lagoon, white sand beaches, and relaxed vibe of Karitāne make it feel like a tropical getaway. Channelling barefoot luxe, the beautifully appointed Longhouse commands panoramic ocean views and is the perfect retreat for friends and family. Nearby is the spectacular historic Huriawa Pā site, which can be toured by walking, cycling, and waka.

PENINSULA PARADISE

Home to albatross, sea lions, and penguins, the Otago Peninsula also hosts scenic wonders like the Okia Reserve pyramids, Victory Beach shipwreck, and night skies ideal for stargazing tours. Head up the spine of the peninsula past the iconic castle and over to Sandymount, where there are amazing beaches and a gin distillery which will soon open for tastings, before spending a couple of nights at the waterside oasis of Kaimata Retreat.

HEAD FOR THE HILLS

Head slightly inland from the coast and take a backroad adventure into the Waikouaiti hills to a hinterland haven. Nestled amongst rocks and tussock, overlooking a valley, is Fallow Ridge Retreat. A luxurious two-person stay with an outdoor bath and rugged rural views. To fully immerse yourself in nature, take a short drive to the amazing Orokonui Ecosanctuary, a genuine cloud forest populated with native birdlife and New Zealand’s tallest tree. Head there via Arc Brewery, which makes a tasty selection of craft beer.

CITY SAFARI

You can pedal your way from the peninsula around the harbour on the nearly complete shared path, which takes you past quaint inlets and colourful boatsheds to the city. Enjoy a seafood lunch at the waterfront at Harbourside Grill or Plato’s selection of panfried fish for dinner. Explore the colourful canvasses of the city with a Dunedin Street Art walk and hunt out the veritable jungle of murals depicting all manner of creatures, from kākāpō and Haast eagles to wolves and bulls.

A home (and income) away from home

Christchurch-based homeowner, Casey, owns two houses in Hanmer Springs which he advertises for short-term rent. For second homeowners, there can often be a toss-up between whether to have the home as a long-term tenancy or holiday rental. For Casey, the choice was obvious; renting it shortterm means he can cover some of his costs, plus have the flexibility to use the homes. Once he had decided that short-term was the way to go, then came the research into how that property would be rented. Given that Casey lives in Christchurch and was aware of the added work that comes with renting out a holiday home, he was after a fullservice management solution. After shopping around, Casey came across Bachcare and found it was the right fit for him. “Bachcare offered us a complete package to look after our rental properties and, when compared with other service providers, was the most cost-effective and straightforward option.” When the houses were completed at the end of 2018, it made for an easy choice to list them with Bachcare. Having Bachcare and their local Hanmer Springs property managers who take care of cleaning and linen for guests makes short-term renting a hassle-free experience for Casey. He notes that “cleanliness and service are to the highest standard,” and the online portal is easy to use for blocking calendars for their own stays, as well as seeing what level of income is expected. Bachcare takes care of the whole holiday home rental process, so Casey can sit back and relax, knowing his properties are in safe hands. “Bachcare provides the complete suite of services, from listing our properties to cleaning and servicing. We are also really happy with our local property managers, who are on the ground representing Bachcare in Hanmer Springs.” If you have a holiday home sitting empty, make sure you contact Bachcare’s team of advisors. Also, visit the website for details on your free income appraisal.
