Welcome

When the kids are little, a lot of parental worry stems from food and eating. Are they getting enough of the right things? How do I get them to try new foods? Why won’t he sit up nicely at the dinner table and stop banging his knife and fork? Or maybe that one is just me!

By the time they're teenagers, how to hide the good stuff so it’s still there when you sit down to watch Netflix is a more likely food scenario. At this stage of their lives, schoolwork and their future career path are high on the agenda.

In this issue of Family Times, we have tackled both of these sticky subjects. For those caring for young children, Kate Barber spoke with nutritionist Helen Potter about littlies and food. Her article ‘Raising great eaters’ (pg 17) offers solid, practical strategies for getting to grips with the mealtime madness.

For those sharing their home with teens, neuroscience educator and parenting expert Nathan Wallis shares his knowledge of the teenage brain and offers advice for choosing the right moment to talk about the future in ‘Career talks with teens – setting the scene’ (Pg 18).

In the last few weeks, the crisp breezeless mornings and darkening evenings have lifted my spirits, knowing autumn is here bringing with it the settled days that bless Christchurch at this time of the year. See our Out & About pages for outdoor play inspiration, and let’s hope the sunshine lasts through the holidays.
