BACKGROUND

What’s your physical characteristic of body? Nasal Curve is a characteristic of my body.

018

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept Using the nasal cavity resonation as a concept, taking the specific shape and resonation function to design different amplifiers, allowing the user to choose their own favorite music style and create different musical effects with the amplifiers. In the future I hope this concept can be used in the design of musical halls, using the change of the musical halls to offer the best performance environment to performers.

034

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept The robot ball shooting contest is a cross-industry collaboration between the engineering department and the art & design department, in which each art & design student will be paired with two engineering students and through the exchange of ideas co-design the ideal robot for each team. Through this project we were able to successfully combine engineering and design.

035

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

V.S.

The rules of this competition is that the robots of both sides need to be in a specific range, and the first robot that manages to align the ping pong ball into a line into a three by three grid wins.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Biological Observation - Snake Snakes are elongate, limbless and carnivorous reptiles. They belong to the Order Squamata which is distinguished by their skins which are covered in scales. The eyes of snakes are covered by their clear scales rather than movable eyelids. With the help of horny scales, muscular contraction and movable joints and ribs , snakes have developed several different modes of locomotion to move on land. There are four basic modes of serpentine movements: rectilinear locomotion, lateral undulation, sidewinding and concertina locomotion.

Snake Mechanism After watching a film of snake locomotion, it showed that the intercostal muscles connect ribs and ventral skin. When the muscle contracts, ribs move forward and cause a series of ventralt scales to stand up, looking like millions of tiny feet stepping on the ground. At this moment, the body of snake is not moving. By the time the intercostals muscles relax, the back edge of ventral scales generate force to press against the ground and then the counterforce propel the body forward while keeping the entire body in a straight line.

059

MODEL

Observation of the Prototype Based on the previous research about the snake’s mechanism – the dynamic balance relation between intercostal muscle and transversus ventralis, the prototype is designed in a series of units, each one of which is composed of two octagons inclined and which can turn around and swing up and down, Footwall and connected at one side and equipped with a connecter for vertical and horizontal rotation. Also, between the upper and lower octagon plates is positioned a transmission mechanism, through which and the connecter in each unit, the prototype could wiggle up and down, swing left and right. Together the prototype can make locomotion like a straight line or an s-shaped curve. Upon observing the prototype, we found that the direction of its action is largely along the axes of x and y.Therefore, the dimension in Z axis was added to make the movement of the prototype more smoothly and dimensional, which enrich the way it turns and rotates.

FINAL DESIGN

Artificial Mutation Motors were added as joints to connect each unit which is now composed of three prototype units, generating new constructs which are able to turn laterally. Combining this with the original movement in straight line, the “Red Ends could produce more actions, such as rotation and lateral movement.

NEILI / IN BETWEEN : PART 1

BACKGROUND

Neili - In Between 2011 Art in the Neighborhood Project, Ministry of Culture, Executive Yuan (Jointly organized by Yuan Ze University, rt & Design Department and Ministry of Culture, Executive Yuan) Through this project, we brought art into the neighborhood of Neili, Taoyuan country .It was hoped that stronger ties between the school and the neighborhood could be created through the collaborative art between residents of the neighborhood and the university students, and that a local consensus of beauty would lead the art deco style of the neighborhood.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept Using automatic iron roll-up doors as a concept, and utilizing air pipes as material, through the shaping of the material we hope to express a transformation of the roll-up doors, transforming the cold iron into an armor of protection. The hometown is a quiet little road, at the ends of the road are the most busy streets of the region, the stark contrast between these street and the quiet side street, the closing of the iron door is a symbol of safety.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept Using a boat as a concept, my partner of this project has spent the past 30 years on the sea, while his wife and child wait for his return at home. I developed this story into a boat mooring image in my design. The door is the entrance and exit of a space, in Taiwan we are used to cold, emotionless metal doors, a convenient and purposeful device, therefore I’ve designed a special door, forming a pair that collaborates with the original door, it reduces the protectiveness of the door, and attempts to increase the communication between neighbors. It also echoes the topic In Between and evokes a deeper reflection between people and the space of a door.

091

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Mr. Zhu - My partner of this project

My partner of this project, Mr. Zhu has lived in Taoyuan county for over 40 years, he’s 75 years old this year, he used to be a chief engineer on a boat and spent most of his time on the sea, while the wife and child waited for him at home.
