PUBLISHING

Welcome W

We have put this publication together to provide you with information on acquiring a car as a disabled driver. In these pages you will find an overview of a selection of the cars available on the Motability Scheme, important information about what you are entitled to through the Motability Scheme and many other features. If you turn to page 32 you will find an article on electric cars. Many people are still unsure of these environmentally friendly vehicles so we have looked into the pros and cons of going green. Motoring enthusiast, Tim Saunders, has also tackled the age old argument of ‘Petrol vs Diesel’ as he considers fuel, emissions, drive

The right car

THE BIG

DECISION C

hoosing the car that is right for you can take a lot of time and research. As a disabled driver you have even more areas to consider including adaptations and accessibility. It may be an idea to start making a list of things that are important to you in a vehicle and try to prioritise these points. This will help you narrow down your search and make it easier to choose the car that will suit your accessibility needs and your lifestyle.

travel as a passenger? This then poses the question of where you want to travel as a passenger and how many seats you need available for other passengers.

We have comprised a checklist to help you with the decision process.

There are over 400 adaptations available to ensure your driving experience is as comfortable and safe as possible. The adaptations available include: t )BOE DPOUSPMT TVDI BT FMFDUSPOJD BDDFMFSBUPST PS push/pull devices to action the accelerator or brake t -FGU GPPU BDDFMFSBUPST GPS JOEJWJEVBMT XIP IBWF MJNJUFE mobility in their right leg t 4UFFSJOH XIFFM CBMMT UIBU BTTJTU XJUI TUFFSJOH UP HJWF you more control t "UUBDINFOUT UP BMMPX ZPV UP SFBDI TUBOEBSE controls in your car such as the indicator or lights

• Accessibility You must consider what kind of car is going to suit your needs. Can you transfer into a car easily and store your wheelchair safely in the back or do you need a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)? If so, do you want a drive-from wheelchair vehicle that allows you to get straight up to the wheel via a ramp without you having to transfer or move from your wheelchair, or do you simply require a WAV so you can

Some vehicles available nowadays can offer the option for you to drive the vehicle from your wheelchair or travel as a passenger, this offers a great freedom of choice. Check out our WAV section on page 38 for more information.

The Motability Scheme allows disabled people to use their government-funded mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair. Since it was set up in 1978 Motability has helped over three million people get a new vehicle.

Motability

Case study Aaron 23, was left paralysed from the waist down following a Motocross accident at age 15.

“There are over 2000 cars available to lease through the Motability Scheme” A parent or guardian of a child aged three or above who receives the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance is entitled to lease a car on their behalf. There is no upper age limit on the Scheme, however there can only be one driver under the age of 21 and anyone under 25 is restricted to cars with a power output of 115bhp or less and with an ABI Insurance Group of 16 or lower. You can check if you, a family member or a friend is eligible on the Motability website at: wwww.motability.co.uk/ understanding-the-scheme/eligibility. With over 2000 cars available to lease through the Motability Scheme it can be daunting to choose the most suitable car for you, but with the vast array of vehicles and adaptations on offer it’s easy to find one to suit your lifestyle. Around a quarter of the cars on offer cost the same, if not less, than your allowance, but should you opt for another vehicle, many of them are available with no advance payment - this is a one off lump sum which covers the difference between your allowance coverage and the overall cost of the car. The Motability Scheme offers a wealth of information to help you make the most informed decision on what car is best suited to your needs and the Motability website even hosts a handy search function to help you narrow down your choices. It also helps locate dealers in your local area who you can visit to discuss your options with a Motability Specialist.

Adaptations are also fully available through Motability to help you get in and out of the car as well as helping you drive your car, or stow your wheelchair or scooter. Over 37,000 Motability customers have had their vehicles adapted but before you make any final decisions on a car, you should work out what type of adaptation you may need. To help you specify the adaptations you need you can visit www.motability. co.uk/cars-and-wavs/adaptations-andadjustments for a clear, interactive guide. When ordered from the beginning of your lease, most of the common adaptations can be completely free! However, some more complicated adaptations must be paid for, a full list of which can be found on the Motability website. Motability host an annual two day show called The Big Event, held in EventCity in Manchester on the 8th and 9th of May. The event showcases the UK’s largest display of vehicles available through the Motability Scheme with over 100 cars from 27 different manufacturers and over 40 scooters and powered wheelchairs. Adaptations from a wide range of companies are also exhibited, as well as giving visitors the chance to test drive a range of adapted and unadapted vehicles. So if you like the sound of the Scheme and are keen to find out more, you can visit the Big Event, or one of their smaller “One Big Day” events across the country. Full details of the events and how to get involved are on the Motability website, www.motability.co.uk

“I’ve always been a massive fan of motor sports and would love to become a racing driver,” says Aaron. “After the accident, there was no way I was going to give up on my dream.” After passing his driving test Aaron decided to use his Government mobility allowance to lease a brand new car through the Motability Scheme. His automatic car was adapted with hand controls instead of pedals to make it suitable for him to drive. Aaron has even now managed to race an adapted BMW and has taken part in track days against non-disabled drivers at Silverstone and Brands Hatch. “My Motability car is very important in allowing me to travel to my races and trackdays. I have recently got a handcycle and this is something that I am really enjoying, despite the short amount of time I have owned it.” He added: “My Motability vehicle has helped me so much. It has enabled me to live at university independently, travelling home when I need to and also aiding with shopping trips when on campus. “It has enabled me to travel safely, quickly and practically to work in my short career this far. Finally it has enabled me to pursue my hobbies. I have been able to travel to my races, as and when needed. “Having my Motability vehicle has lifted a huge pressure off of my family as they do not need to worry about how I am going to travel to where I need to go.”

TOP TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF MOTABILITY’S ‘THE BIG EVENT’ THIS SUMMER The Big Event is a great opportunity to find out more about leasing a car, scooter or powered wheelchair through the Motability Scheme. Taking place at EventCity in Manchester on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May, visitors can explore the UK’s largest display of vehicles available to lease through the Scheme, test drive a selection of cars, talk to Motability advisors and gather a range of helpful information, while enjoying a great day out with their families and friends. Here are our top five tips for making the most of The Big Event: 1. The Big Event will showcase over 100 cars, from 27 manufacturers as well as Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles, adaptations, scooters and powered wheelchairs, all available to lease on the Motability Scheme. Stay tuned to the website where the makes and models on display and available to test drive on the day will be revealed: motability.co.uk/thebigevent

2. Make sure you bring your full driving licence with you and book a test drive when you arrive. It’s a great way to find out if the car you’re considering is right for you 3. Keep the kids occupied with a visit to the dedicated children’s activity area - there’s plenty to keep them entertained with free face painting, colouring packs and the opportunity to meet Motability’s mascot, Billy the Bear! 4. Don’t forget to redeem your token, (handed out at reception on arrival) for a free cup of tea, coffee or a soft drink! 5. To stay up to date with all the latest news, photos and films from The Big Event, make sure you ‘like’ the Facebook page at Facebook.com/MotabilityEvents For more information on The Big Event in Manchester on 8 - 9 May and other regional One Big Day events throughout the summer, visit motability.co.uk/thebigevent or Facebook.com/MotabilityEvents.

Available in two petrol engines – the 1.0 and the 1.2 – the i10 is most comfortable nipping around the city, but can also hold its own on the motorway and for longer journeys. Wind and road noise is kept to a minimum and the engine is also much quieter than its rivals in the same class when building up speed. The basic model comes with electric front windows, central locking, CD player and a USB socket, as well as anti-lock brakes with braking assistance and tyre pressure monitoring as standard. Of course if you can’t live without those added luxuries you may wish to opt for a higher spec model. The S Air will get you air-conditioning, whereas a step up to the SE will add remote central locking, electric rear windows, driver’s seat height adjustment and electrically adjustable heated door mirrors. The Premium model adds alloys, LED daytime running lights and a leather steering wheel. Safety has also been a priority in the design of the i10. All models come with six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system and stability control. Whatever model you choose, you will get the added bonus of Hyundai’s generous support package which offers a five year warranty with roadside assistance and free annual vehicle checks.

The look A sleek exterior design is complemented by an interior to match. The dashboard is simple and well laid out, with all the vital controls within easy reach in a compact central panel. You can even colour coordinate a panel across the dash and around the gearstick with the exterior colour to brighten things up inside.

planning a longer journey. The i10 is only available in a five-door model so access to the back seats is good. There is also ample storage in the cabin thanks to a number of clever storage solutions. The i10’s boot is the biggest in its class with 252 litres of space and the back seats are also split folding to offer additional room for transporting luggage or equipment.

Comfort If you have chosen to opt for a city car, you have already decided to make the compromise on space. But the i10 will surprise you. There is ample space in the front for a comfortable journey for both passengers and although it is neater in the back, you could still fit three adults, albeit not as comfortably, especially if you were

MINI COOPER The car When it comes to having fun behind the wheel, you really needn’t look any further than the MINI Cooper. Compact, efficient, and with bags of style, the MINI is one of the most popular and recognisable cars on the road today. Previous models have been criticised for having firm suspension, however the latest MINI Cooper feels much softer, handles well and feels comfortable travelling round the city or on the motorway. The cabin is well insulated from engine and wind noise and its shape offers good visibility for the driver. The MINI may be more expensive than its rivals in the same class, but it’s cheap to run and the car also holds its value well in the second hand market. Whichever spec you choose you will find 15 inch alloys, air-conditioning, keyless engine starting, Bluetooth, DAB radio, USB socket, front foglights, electric windows and climate control. And of course, when it comes to making a car your own, MINI does customisation like no other manufacturer.

The look The iconic look of the MINI is instantly recognisable on the road, with its distinctive round headlights and curved lines. The stylish interior maintains its retro feel with its circular features, however the large centrally mounted speedometer, synonymous to so many with the MINI name, has been replaced by the new infotainment system. Of course, part of the MINI’s appeal is just how much of the car you can customise to your own taste. You can choose from a variety of body work colours, alloys and interior trims, as well as adding little luxuries such as satellite navigation and leather seats. Comfort Inside the cabin is comfortable and attractive, offering a good driving position and plenty of legroom for the front passenger. The driver’s seat and steering wheel can both be adjusted so it’s easy to select a driving position that’s most comfortable for you. Although the MINI is slightly larger than some of the other vehicles in the same class, space in the back for the two passengers is still limited. The boot is also significantly smaller than similar models in the class, at just 211 litres.

SKODA FABIA The car The Skoda Fabia may not be renowned for its sleek design, but what it lacks in style it more than makes up for in reliability and value for money. Good to drive and cheap to run, the Fabia was even voted overall winner at the What Car? Car of the Year 2015 awards, also picking up best small car as well. The Fabia is available in three specs – S, SE and SE L, and in a five door model only. Each model comes with a three year or 60,000 mile warranty. The entry level S model is generously equipped with Bluetooth, a DAB radio, a USB socket, remote central locking, Start/Stop technology, electric front windows and electrically adjustable door mirrors. If you opt to step up to the SE model you will get air-conditioning, alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, upgraded stereo and leather steering wheel. The look The Fabia may not be the most stylish car on the road, but it is reliable and secure. On top of a range of colours, you can also choose to have a panoramic sunroof, or choose from a range of contrasting colours for the roof. The latest models feature a five inch central screen for the car’s easy to use,

The SE and SE L models come with a slightly larger 6.5 inch screen and also feature MirrorLink, which syncs with your mobile phone and effectively mirrors what’s on your screen, for example if you want to select music or use an app for directions. Comfort and safety Although smaller than the previous model, the latest Fabia is in fact bigger inside offering good headroom and legroom in the front and back. There is good seat adjustment and visibility for the driver. The Fabia’s safety features are also impressive; six airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock braking system, hydraulic brake assist and a tyrepressure monitoring system all come as standard and it received a five star crash test rating from Euro NCAP. There are great storage solutions within the cabin and the boot is very impressive with 330 litres of space. www.skoda.co.uk/motability

VOLKSWAGEN UP! The car Cheap to run and fun to drive, the Volkswagen up! is ideal for negotiating busy city streets, while its compact size makes it easy to park. With comfortable suspension, the up! can handle most bumps in the road without causing too much discomfort, while the light steering makes it easy to manoeuvre. The entry level Take up! comes with only the basic features such as a CD player, auxiliary socket for your MP3 player, stability control and airbags but a number of packs can be added to give extra features such as the Comfort Pack which adds electric front windows, remote central locking, driver’s seat height adjustment and a parking light. The look The simplicity of the up!’s exterior design makes it one of the most attractive small cars on the road. You can choose from a variety of colours and alloy wheels to suit your taste. The interior has a feeling of class about it, thanks to the quality of materials Volkswagen have opted to use. The sleek

dashboard is uncomplicated and easy to navigate. Comfort and safety For a car that is so compact, the interior is surprisingly spacious for those in the front seats. The driver can also adjust the steering wheel for height, but not reach. The back can fit two adults with relative comfort but it can feel a bit snug for taller passengers. The boot is one of the biggest in its class; at 251 litres it’s ample for some shopping or light luggage, but may be too small for those who need to transport a wheelchair or equipment regularly. The up! is also one of the safest cars in its class, having achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Its safety features include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, a seatbelt reminder buzzer and six airbags.

BMW 2 SERIES ACTIVE TOURER

W

hen you think of the brand BMW the images that pop into your mind will most likely be of sleek, luxurious models or dominant and impressive models from the BMW X range. What you may not associate with BMW is a practical, middle of the road family car. However, the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which has recently become available on the Motability Scheme, is exactly that – minus the ‘middle of the road’ part. It transpires that following research, BMW discovered they did not have a model to compete in the family car sector. So they decided to create an MPV that would cater for the modern day family; spacious, affordable and fun.

The Drive The first front-wheel drive that BMW has ever produced, the 2 Series offers a smooth and stable drive changing easily through the gears. We tested the vehicle on both city streets and the motorway and it handled both with ease and was very quiet inside the cabin, with wind and road noise kept to a minimum even at high speeds. You can choose one of three driving modes: Comfort mode, ECO PRO mode and Sport mode. We found ECO PRO mode the most impressive; geared towards efficiency, ECO PRO mode helps to save you fuel by monitoring the accelerator, transmission, heating

and air-conditioning and adjusting these accordingly to their most efficient level.

inTerior The BMW 2 Series offers a surprising amount of space once inside. They have used the same engine as used in the MINI and have cleverly reversed the position of it underneath the bonnet to maximise space. Both the driver’s seat and steering wheel are fully adjustable to ensure a comfortable driving position. There is ample head and legroom in both the front and back so no matter who is travelling in the back, they will have plenty of room. The cabin is home to lots of useful storage areas, there is a large box in the centre armrest which also has a top layer made especially for a mobile phone, with a surface that holds the phone in place. There is also a handy 12V power socket. The iDrive was one of the stand out features of the 2 Series. This infotainment system controls all the car’s entertainment, such as the DAB radio and CD player and allows you to access information about the car’s systems, such as tyre pressure and oil level. This is also the viewing screen for the Reversing Assist camera, which makes it easier to reverse park into tight spaces; handy if you are a frequent city driver. The screen is located on the centre of the dashboard, in easy view for both the driver and passenger and is controlled using the iDrive controller on the centre console. This can also be used as a sort of drawing

board, which may sound odd, but it allows you to simply write a letter with your finger to locate names in your phonebook or a destination for the sat nav. You can also connect your mobile phone which allows you to make hands-free calls through the system and can also enable you to access features such as Facebook, but only when the vehicle is stationary.

Helpful additions As with the majority of cars coming into the market, the 2 Series has Start/Stop technology and operates without a key. The BMW Comfort Access system allows you to unlock, lock and start the car, just by having the key fob on your person. The boot is equipped with a smart-opener which enables contactless opening of the boot lid. This can also be closed by the touch of a button, which is great for those who maybe struggle to pull the weight of

the boot lid down. Inside, the spacious boot has a foldable floor (40:20:40 ratio) that can be stowed away to make the boot larger. If in place, the shelf offers a more accessible space for those who perhaps struggle to reach into the depth of the boot. Another great tool that the 2 Series comes with is a Speed Limiter. This allows you to set a top speed and once you have reached that, no matter how flat your foot is to the floor on the accelerator, the car will not go over that speed.

safety The Optional Driving Assistant uses cameras to reduce the risk of potential collisions. For example if a vehicle in front of you brakes suddenly, Forward Collision Warning alerts you so you can react in time. There is also Lane Departure warning and it is also equipped with Traffic Jam Assist. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, BMW Emergency Call is a

great feature that will contact the local emergency services to alert them. You can also alert the emergency services manually, if you are involved in or witness an accident, by pressing the emergency services button on the roof above the centre of the windscreen.

added extras If your budget will allow, BMW offer a number of optional packages you can add to get some additional features: Driver Comfort and BMW Navigation including ConnectedDrive technology packages. One of the most impressive of the extras is the Head-Up Display system. This is a transparent screen above the steering wheel, directly in the driver’s field of vision that projects important information such as speed, navigation instructions, telephone and music listings. www.bmw.co.uk/motability motoring | 17

NISSAN PULSAR The Car The Nissan Pulsar 1.2 Dig-T 115 Visia was the winner of the 2015 What Car? Best Family Car under £16,000 award. Ticking all the boxes for spaciousness, refinement, safety, technology and price, it beat off some tough competition to win this accolade. The drive is smooth and solid with precise steering. Wind and road noise is kept to a minimum, especially in the petrol engines and space inside the cabin is in abundance.

FORD FOCUS The Car One of the most popular family cars in Britain, the Ford Focus offers reliability, affordability and a solid drive. It may not be the flashiest car on the road today but it makes up for that in other areas. Driving is enjoyable as it cruises through gears easily and grips the road well. It is wellcontrolled on corners and road noise is kept fairly quiet, even on motorways. It is reasonably cheap to run and the range includes the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine and the 1.5 litre TDCi engine which both offer tax free CO2 emissions.

The Look The Pulsar is a nice looking hatchback, there is nothing particularly stand out about it to look at, but once inside it is deceptively spacious. It will comfortably seat three adults in the rear seats and the robust interior will stand up to any sibling fights. The dashboard is laid out clearly and there are various storage compartments to accommodate life’s essential gadgets. The boot offers plenty of room with 385 litres of space that will extend to 1395 litres once the seats are folded down, but they do leave a big lip that can hinder the storage of some items. The Range The range offers four trim levels; the

The Look The Focus was given a facelift in 2014, refining its style and resulting in a more upmarket look with a chrome grille and narrower headlights. The interior has been improved too, the modernised dash now boasts soft-touch plastics and a clearer layout of dials that are lit with a blue light from behind. The facelift has benefited the Focus massively and the finished product is a very desirable car. Comfort and Safety The driving position is fully adjustable and provides great comfort for the driver. Up front there is plenty of space but the back seats aren’t quite so generous. The boot remains a little on the small side for this class and you will have to raise the seat bases to fold the seats down to create a big boot area. Not ideal if you often have big items to stow. The Focus achieved a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating and includes six airbags and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard. Ford also offers a £550 Driver Assistance Pack that provides you with pre-collision city braking, a lane keeping aid, traffic sign recognition, auto lights and wipers and a driver alertness monitor. www.ford.co.uk/FordMotability

VOLVO V40 The Car An attractive hatchback that rivals some of the premium models in this car sector. The Volvo V40 is great to drive, easy on the eyes and has a strong focus on safety. Another great appeal of the V40 is the economical fuel consumption. There is a choice of three diesel engines; the D2, D3 and D4 and four petrol engines; T2, T3, T4 and T5. The 1.6 litre D2 diesel is the smallest engine in the range and it offers an incredible 83.1mpg and with CO2 emissions at just 88g/km it means that this model is road tax free. Entry level ES models are well equipped with City Safety, Pedestrian Airbag, Bluetooth, DAB radio, Electronic Climate Control, Electronic Stability Control and 16” alloy wheels. Moving up the range adds various luxuries including leather upholstery, 17” alloy wheels, autofolding power door mirrors and aluminium trim. The Look The interior of the V40 has all of Volvo’s trademark stylings, from the slim centre control panel to the high quality finish at all trim levels. The dials are all displayed clearly and are easy to use. There is a centre column behind the gear box which may interfere with gear changes for some.

It is designed with the style conscious in mind. Ideal for a young family who have practical needs that they want incorporated into an attractive car. Comfort and Accessibility Seating is fully adjustable to ensure you can find your optimal driving position. The seats are comfortable and good for long journeys. The overall space inside the cabin is quite impressive for a hatchback and allows both front and rear passengers ample head and legroom. The boot will manage a couple of large suitcases easily and will provide ample storage space for prams, wheelchairs or other everyday paraphernalia that today’s drivers require. www.volvocars.com

“The Mazda6 is one of the most attractive large cars on the Motability Scheme, thanks to a sleek exterior design”

MAZDA6 The car The Mazda6 is an attractive and stylish vehicle that’s fun to drive and cheap to run. The latest model has been slightly updated, with a new design for the cabin and improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions. The Mazda6 is available in three trims – SE, SE-L and Sport – and each offer a generous list of standard equipment and plenty of optional extras to choose from at an additional fee. A 2.0 petrol and 2.2 diesel engine are available through the Motability Scheme in all three trims. The look The Mazda6 is one of the most attractive large cars on the Motability Scheme, thanks to a sleek exterior design. The curved shape of the roof does however impact on passengers in the back seats, as it slightly restricts

their headroom. Inside, the cabin has a robust feel to it and the dashboard is clear and uncluttered. The seats are comfortable throughout, with plenty of adjustment for the driver, however legroom is slightly neater in the back for tall passengers. Equipment The SE model comes with daytime running lights, electric door mirrors, keyless start, air-conditioning and a touch-screen infotainment system. Stepping up to the SE-L model will add rain-sensing wipers, climate control and front and rear parking sensors. There is also the option of the SE-L Nav which adds the TomTom sat nav system. The top of the range Sport trim gets 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, a reversing camera, leather trim and keyless entry.

The boot can hold an adequate 483 litres, expanding to 1,632 litres with the rear seats down. These also fold completely flat which helps use the space to its full capacity. There is also decent storage within the cabin itself, with storage under the armrest, door bins and a glovebox. www.mazda.co.uk

SKODA OCTAVIA The car Practical, spacious and efficient, the Skoda Octavia offers all the qualities required for tackling journeys with the kids, so much so that it has been voted Best Family Car by What Car? in 2014 and 2015. The Octavia is available in four petrol and four diesel engines, with even the smallest petrol engine offering great fuel economy for a car of this size. As with other Skoda models, the manufacturer has been generous with its equipment, even for the basic S model. Standard equipment includes: air-conditioning, alloy wheels, Bluetooth phone connectivity, DAB radio and USB socket. A step up to the SE adds rear parking sensors, dual climate control and rear electric windows. The Octavia achieved a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. Safety equipment is limited compared to other cars in the same class but all models come with seven airbags and electronic stability control. You can also opt for emergency city braking at an extra cost. An alarm and engine immobiliser are also fitted to every model. The look Skodas are often commented on for not being the most stylish, and although the Octavia is not the exception to the rule,

there is nothing too objectionable about its appearance. Alloy wheels come as standard and you can choose from a great range of colours to suit your taste. The Octavia’s cabin is huge and kitted out to withstand the wear and tear of family life. Soft touch plastics can be found throughout, with silver finish trim around the gearstick and on the doors. All models come with a soft, leather trimmed steering wheel. Comfort and practicality Passengers will be comfortable in both the front and back with ample head and legroom even for tall passengers. The driver will also have no problems finding their optimal position thanks to the masses of adjustment in the steering wheel and driver’s seat. The rear doors are large and open widely, offering good accessibility for those who perhaps struggle getting in and out of a car, as well as for getting the kids in and out. The boot is enormous, offering a staggering 590 litres, or 1580 litres with the back seats folded down. Which Engine?

By Tim Saunders

Petrol vs Diesel

‘F

ears over diesel engines are misplaced’, so claims the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), along with BMW, Ford and Jaguar Land Rover.

“Today’s diesel engines are the cleanest ever and the culmination of billions of pounds of investment by manufacturers to improve air quality,” said Mike Hawes, the chief executive of SMMT. “Bans and parking taxes on diesel vehicles therefore make no sense from an environmental point of view,” he added.

petrol emitting less carbon dioxide (CO2); a significant contributor to global warming. However, traditionally diesel engines emit more nitrogen oxides (NOx) than petrol cars and these can cause health problems, such as exacerbation of asthma symptoms, inflammation of airways and the reduction in lung function. Yet the SMMT points out that the latest Euro-6 vehicle emission standards, affecting all new cars sold from January 1 2015, drastically reduce NOx pollutants.

It is feasible that Ford’s Dagenham plant alone could soon be making a million diesel engines a year.

London Mayor Boris Johnson is thinking about introducing an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) where drivers of diesel cars would be charged an additional fee to drive into central London on top of the existing £10 Congestion Charge.

In the past, consumers had been encouraged to purchase diesel cars because diesel is a more efficient fuel than

Newer diesel vehicles adhering to the Euro-6 emission standard would be exempt.

So What iS bEttEr, diESEl or pEtrol? Today’s smaller petrol vehicles are often much more attractive than the diesel equivalent. For instance, the Skoda Citigo, Seat Mii and Volkswagen up! are all superbly efficient, returning around 67mpg. They are all basically the same funky looking small car produced by Volkswagen and it is this diminutive size that is the drawback for many. Great for those singletons looking for a sensible city run around. You will not find better economy when all costs are taken into account. It might also make a good second car but it is not suitable for an executive wishing to make a statement in the corporate car park or indeed for the family with 2.4 children and a Dalmatian. A car that feels much more spacious and able to cope with a family and perhaps even a dog in the boot is the Peugeot 308, Car of the Year 2014. The remarkable thing about this car is the fact that to drive it feels

Facts at a glance rear bumper. It is those exhausts and the fairly low stance of the car that hint at its sporting credentials, which are really rather appealing. And yet it’s a diesel. And only a 2-litre. But it can reach 0-60 in just 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 140mph. Not so many years ago this performance would only have been the domain of petrol-engined models. It is remarkable how this technology has improved so rapidly. And what’s more those engineers at Volvo have developed a wonderful raspy note to the exhaust when it is worked hard, making it an absolute joy to put your foot to the floor.

like a car with a much larger engine and yet it’s only powered by a tiddly 1.2-litre petrol unit producing a sporty 130bhp. It returns around 54mpg. Needless to say it’s a joy to drive and the smooth six-speed automatic gearbox can even be driven like a manual should the mood allow. If extra oomph is required simply press the sports mode button. While it doesn’t provide lightning performance it does increase the revs and a little ‘s’ appears on the dash. If conditions become icy there’s an ice mode too, giving the driver extra security that the vehicle isn’t going to slide down the road. The issue of family and executive transport is solved in one fell swoop by Volvo and its slick V60 range. From the moment you clap eyes on this estate you know it is not going to disappoint. Just looking around the outside there are numerous features about the design that are pleasing to the eye. From the distinctive black grille to the alloy wheels and the way the twin chrome exhausts are flush with the

The model I tested is the V60 D4 Business Edition GT, which comes laden with goodies including a heated steering wheel, which proves very nice on cold mornings. Equipped with engine stop start it is efficient, returning up to 67mpg and around 700 miles on a tank when travelling at typical speeds. This model is automatic which is generally very smooth. There is a useful intelligent cruise control which also measures the distance of the Volvo from the car in front. It brakes and accelerates accordingly and makes the brake and accelerator almost redundant. Its boot is large enough to accommodate youngest daughter Heidi’s pushchair and two sizeable luggage holdalls as well as various carrier bags of shopping. Having been a sat nav hater for many years I am slowly being converted especially by Volvo’s userfriendly system. A few turns of the dial and the journey is calculated with the driver being directed with helpful voice commands. It is also possible to talk to this system and ask it to direct you to locations. I tried this but it didn’t seem to recognise my voice. Overall the V60 is a fantastic vehicle with a comfortable driving position. Not only is it great for the family it provides smart executive transport, too. If a sports coupe is more your thing then for the first time ever the infamous MercedesBenz SLK is now available as a diesel, too. It just shows that regardless of the green lobby, there is fundamental support for the diesel engine from both manufacturers and customers alike.

NISSAN QASHQAI The Car For the second year running the Nissan Qashqai was named as the winner of the Best Small SUV in the What Car? 2015 Awards. So it appears that the Qashqai has continued to be unbeaten on performance, refinement, practicality and value for money. A popular choice with families, the Nissan Qashqai offers a smooth, responsive drive that handles well on corners. The elevated driving position adds a sense of confidence and security on the roads and wind and road noise is low even on motorways, ensuring an enjoyable and peaceful journey.

HONDA CR-V The Car The Honda CR-V offers a comfortable drive with good suspension, soaking up bumps and potholes easily. It’s a good cruiser on the motorway and ideal for the family drop offs and pick ups around town. The trim levels are S, SE, SR and EX. The S trim however is not well equipped so it is recommended that you look at the SE and above to get more for your money. The SE trim includes front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the SR trim adds heated part-leather seats and

The Look The Qashqai was given a bit of a revamp recently and this has resulted in an even more aesthetically pleasing crossover. The final product has more of an off-road look with a raised ride height, roof rails and some black trim giving it a more expensive look. Inside, the cabin offers plenty of space in the front and rear of the car. The dials and infotainment systems are attractive, well laid out and easy to operate. The

materials used are good quality and durable, designed to withstand family life. Overall the interior is stylish yet functional. The boot offers an impressive 430 litres of space and the rear seats fold down to give a flat storage area of 1,585 litres. It also features a flat loading lip and base making loading easier. The parcel shelf can also be stowed under the false boot floor to get it out of the way when not in use – this function is available in all models except for the Visia.

Safety The new Qashqai has benefited from the improved Safety Shield technology. This includes front collision avoidance (autonomous braking), lane departure warning, drowsiness detection, blind spot warning, traffic sign recognition, reversing cameras and sensors. www.nissan.co.uk/motability

VOLVO V70 The car Comfortable, spacious and with plenty of safety kit, the Volvo V70 is the go-to choice of many when it comes to buying an estate. There are four diesel models available on the Motability Scheme ranging from 1.6 to 2.4 litres, all scoring well for economy. The entry level ES model is generously equipped with 16” alloy wheels, four electric windows, LED day running lights, rear park assist, dual zone climate control and roof rails. The V70’s infotainment system is easy to use and controls the DAB radio and MP3-compatible CD player. You can also connect devices using the built-in USB and AUX connections. SE spec adds leather faced upholstery and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity and a step up again to the SE Lux gives you satellite navigation. Safety Volvo prides itself on its impressive safety

features and the V70 is a great example of what the manufacturer offers. The IntelliSafe system includes the likes of Adaptive Cruise Control which makes sure your car keeps its distance to the car in front, Park Assist Pilot which can help out with tricky parallel parking using ultrasonic sensors and Active High Beam which automatically switches between low and high beams when required. Volvo’s City Safety technology prepares the brakes to respond quicker if the person in front of you comes to a sudden halt, or if there is no time, it will automatically brake for you. Comfort The V70’s cabin is extremely comfortable. The practical interior has been made with quality materials and is built to last, making it ideal for the wear and tear of travelling with the family. The dashboard is very clean feeling, with most of the controls situated on the large centre console that separates the driver and front passenger’s seats. All the seats are very supportive and the driver’s seat and steering wheel can be

adjusted to suit your individual preference. Off black textile comes as standard but you can upgrade to leather for extra cost. The boot, although smaller than its rivals, still offers 1600 litres of space when the rear seats are folded down. The rear seat can split 40:20:40 and can be folded flat, offering extended cargo space if you are travelling with a lot of equipment or luggage. The low boot lip also makes it easy to load things into the boot. www.volvocars.com/uk/motability

Electric cars

Electric Cars There is still a bit of mystery surrounding electric cars today. Many people remain a bit nervous about making the leap to a fully electric vehicle for a number of reasons, so we thought we would produce a pros and cons list to help you understand the reality of owning an electric vehicle.

PROS ChaRgiNg If you are opting to own an electric vehicle you will most likely want your own charging point at your home to enable you to charge your car overnight. A typical charging point costs about ÂŁ1,000 but there are some equipment suppliers who can install basic chargers for free due to Government funding. There are three charging speeds: t 4MPX $IBSHJOH VQ UP L8 o JEFBM GPS overnight charging at home, taking 6-8 hours to fully charge your vehicle t 'BTU $IBSHJOH L8 o UIJT XJMM GVMMZ charge your vehicle in about 3-4 hours t 3BQJE $IBSHJOH L8 o EFTJHOFE to charge your vehicle to about 80% in just 30 minutes There are charging points being added every day in the UK and currently there are: t $IBSHJOH 1PJOUT JO UIF 6, t "U 6, MPDBUJPOT t 3BQJE $IBSHFST

Lower Running and Maintenance Costs To charge a fully electric car can cost from as little as £0.96 depending on tariffs, it is very unlikely to cost more than £3.40. And by not using a petrol engine there are arguably fewer maintenance issues and no expensive oil changes necessary. Doing Your Bit for the Environment By choosing to drive an electric car you are going very green as they produce no CO2 emissions. This also means you don’t pay road tax. Great Drive Driving an electric car you will notice how smooth and silent it is, there is no noisy engine intruding on your peaceful journey. They also deliver 100% torque at zero rpm so pulling away is fast and acceleration is excellent. Grants Available The Government will fund 35% of the purchase cost of any plug-in car, electric and hybrid, up to a maximum of £5000. No More Petrol Station Visits Instead of queuing up at the garage you

can plug your car in at your home and charge it overnight. Wave goodbye to that lovely fuel smell on your hands.

CONS Range Anxiety On full charge an electric vehicle will only travel up to about 100 miles. This common concern amongst drivers has become known as range anxiety. Unless we are regular long distance commuters this shouldn’t really be too much of an issue, however we are so used to driving cars with a much bigger range that we feel nervous at the thought of being stranded. Expensive to Buy The purchase price of an electric vehicle is generally more expensive than that of their petrol or diesel counterparts due to the high cost of the batteries. Residual Values are Low The resale values of electric cars are currently low. This is mainly due to the high cost of the battery, approximately £8,000 £10,000, which may need replaced in older vehicles. This uncertainty on battery life will unfortunately keep resale values low, but there are more affordable battery leasing

Electric cars

“you will notice when driving an electric car that it makes little to no noise at all” options becoming available which will help. Maintenance Costs A contradiction occurs here, while you don’t have the upkeep that traditional petrol and diesel engines require, if you do have a problem you can’t just drop into a nearby garage as they will probably not specialise in electric vehicles. This means you have to go to the main dealer.

NissaN LEaf The only fully electric car available on the Motability Scheme is the Nissan Leaf. It runs on a 107bhp electric motor and can travel up to 124 miles per charge. This is dependent on the model, individual driving and your use of the extras such as the car’s heating system. On a cold day you are much less likely to reach 100 miles. The entry level Visia comes with climate control, keyless entry, Bluetooth and a USB socket. Moving up the range to the Acenta will give you sat nav, a reversing camera, 16” alloy wheels, cruise control and automatic lights and wipers. The Tekna adds 17” alloy wheels, an around view monitor that gives you a 360 degree view of your car, heated steering wheel and front seats and LED front headlights with auto levelling. Driving Experience The Leaf offers a comfortable driving experience and the most obvious difference you will notice when driving an electric car

is that it makes little to no noise at all when driving, making for a very peaceful journey. The Leaf scored the full five stars in crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP and there’s even an audible exterior sound to warn pedestrians of your presence. The Car This five-seater hatchback has a spacious interior that you can customise to your own taste by choosing the interior fabric and trim. It’s very comfortable for four passengers, but less so if at maximum capacity of five. The stylish dashboard features clear and concise dials and includes a touch screen sat nav system. There’s a range of instrumentation to give you various information about economy, charge levels (including how many miles you can go before recharging) and local charging facilities. They also display how much energy is being used by the drive motor and ancillary power drains. The Acenta and Tekna grades can communicate with your smartphone and laptop, meaning you can check out charging points on your route and start the cabin heating or cooling so it’s comfortable as soon as you get in. The neat packaging of its lithium-ion batteries means there is no compromise on boot space; in fact, it boasts 370 litres on Visia and Acenta grades. www.nissan.co.uk/moability

Learner drivers

earning to

DRIVE F By Dionne Kennedy

reedom is important to everyone. Learning to drive is often the first step to this coveted idea of freedom. No more lifts from your parents, no more stuck at cold bus stops restricted by timetables. Driving gives you a sense of independence and for many living with disabilities this sense of freedom is even more important. With increasing numbers of adaptations and modifications available, driving is open to more people than ever before. With the right vehicle and the right adaptations you too can enjoy the freedom that driving can bring. But before you jump into the driving seat and whizz off into the sunset in your adapted car, you have to learn to safely drive on the road first. Safety on the road is the most important thing and research shows that it’s lack of experience that causes accidents with newly qualified drivers. So it’s even more important to take your time with lessons and become confident.

The Young Driver Scheme The Young Driver scheme offers those aged 11 or over the chance to learn to

drive earlier, before they are 17 and can apply for a UK driving licence. Being able to have lessons this early means you are able to become the safest driver you can be, by learning over an extended period of time.

Claudia is deaf but that hasn’t stopped her becoming one of the Young Driver’s best students. She came in 6th in the 14-16 age category of the Young Driver Challenge 2014 - a national competition to find the UK’s best young drivers.

The scheme regularly works with both young and older people with a wide range of disabilities, including those who are deaf, have prosthetic limbs, are in wheelchairs or have learning disabilities or neurological disorders. For many of the students of the Young Driver scheme, they never thought they’d have the opportunity to experience driving a car and unfortunately some may never be able to drive on the roads.

She’s had 16 lessons in total, with her first beginning in December 2012.

A number of students are often told they will have to wait several years before being able to apply for a provisional licence, which can be hard when all your friends are already learning. Because these lessons take place on private property, the rules are more flexible than on the road. Lessons take place in real, dual control cars (some specially adapted) with a fully qualified instructor. Claudia, 15, has been learning to drive through the scheme for many years now.

“Over the course of my lessons, I had different instructors, some with clearer voices than others. “They were all very willing to make any adjustments that I needed. “I didn’t ask for any special assistance but they volunteered to add an extra mirror so I could lip read the instructor while driving. The instructors understood that I was deaf and were always happy to repeat things. “Having these Young Driver lessons has really given me the confidence that I can take part in any activities I want to, despite being deaf. “I would definitely recommend it to other people. It is well worth the money and opportunity to get a chance to drive.

Post Office or download from the DVLA website, www.gov.uk/apply-firstprovisional-driving-licence. You must provide proof of your mobility component award as well as giving details of your disability or medical condition. You can find a full list of conditions that could affect your ability to drive on the DVLA website, www.gov.uk/health-conditionsand-driving. “I love learning to drive, it is so much fun and enjoyable. It has given me the opportunity for when I’m 17 to already know the basics and have the skills. I can’t wait to get onto the road and get my licence.”

GettinG Started Before beginning any practical lessons on the roads you must apply for your provisional licence through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). If you are receiving the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you can apply for a provisional licence at the age of 16. You can start the application three months before your 16th birthday by filling in the D1 form, which you can get from your local

When the DVLA receives your application they will usually ask for more details of your condition and seek permission from your doctor or specialist and ask for a report to be sent to the DVLA. A specialist advisor will consider the report, if they’re at all uncertain of the effect your condition will have on your ability to drive safely you might be asked to attend a medical examination. Once you have received your provisional you’re able to start learning to drive. There are numerous specialist instructors who are trained and experienced in teaching people with disabilities. You can find a suitable instructor online at www.disabilitydrivinginstructors.com.

Insurance

If you own a car and want to drive it on the UK’s public roads you are required by law to have a minimum of third party insurance.

sponsored by

Get Insured types of Cover Whilst third party insurance cover agrees to pay for damage caused to other people’s property or compensation and costs related to any injuries they may sustain, it is very basic. This would only pay out if you caused an accident and injured another driver, or their passenger, it does not cover the cost of repairs to your own vehicle and wouldn’t cover you if your vehicle was stolen or damaged by fire. In recent years this type of cover has become popular with young or new drivers because of its low cost. But because statistically new drivers are the most likely to crash, insurers are putting up the price of this type of cover. So before opting for the most basic of insurances it’s worth having a look at what policies are on offer and what each company’s specialist policies are. The next tier from third party is third party fire and theft insurance, which covers you for all the same basic levels as that of third party, but also offers protection in the event of loss or damage if your car is damaged by fire or stolen. Finally, fully comprehensive insurance covers both damage to your own vehicle as well as any damage suffered by others from a range of different causes, including accident, fire and theft.

Get the Best polICy It is important to note that not all companies have the same features covered in their fully comprehensive cover, and you should check which additional benefits are the most important to you and who offers them, sometimes it is often even cheaper to buy these separately. For example, it could often be cheaper to buy standalone breakdown insurance rather than buying it as part of your car insurance.

Comparison websites are a great way to get competitive quotes and narrow down the best deal, but if you have a disability and your vehicle has been modified with adaptations then it might be worth looking further afield to find the best deal for you, to find a company whose policies cover you in the most beneficial way. John Garrard, managing director of disability specialist Fish Insurance advises: “Your starting point should be the cover you need not what, in particular, the mass market is trying to sell you. For example most mainstream policies will not cover as standard any adaptations you have made to accommodate your disability. Should you need to claim that could leave you seriously out of pocket.”

speCIalIst Insurers There are several specialist insurance companies out there who cater specifically to drivers with disabilities and the great thing is that they understand what’s important to their customers, many even recognise that disabled drivers pose a lower risk than many other driving groups and reflect this in their premiums. There are hundreds of different adaptations that can be made to your vehicle and the costs of these can pile up, it is important to know that your expensive adaptations are properly covered in your policy, as well as ensuring that should you be without your own vehicle for any specific length of time, you are provided with a suitable vehicle to use. To get the best policy possible for you, make sure you do your own research and compare the best quotes. This will ensure you secure a deal that suits your specific needs and requirements.

WAVS

One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Choosing the Right WAV When it comes to choosing a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV), it’s certainly not a case of one size fits all. There are many different factors to consider when you decide that it’s the right time to buy a WAV, including the vehicle size and dimensions, access, seating arrangements, safety, and of course, cost. We explore these factors to help you make the right decision.

Size And dimenSionS The first and most essential question to ask when buying a wheelchair accessible vehicle is: will my wheelchair fit comfortably inside? By measuring the wheelchair width, length and the height while seated, you will be able to work this out. In general, most vehicles can accommodate a wheelchair with a width of up to 30 inches. If the wheelchair user is quite tall, then they will have less forward view, so head space will be an important consideration. To

By Dave Jones

increase headroom, many WAVs have lowered floors. Most wheelchair passengers will be able to find a vehicle with the right height.

enough room to get out of the vehicle without denting the vehicle parked alongside. In this case, rear access can be an easier and more usable proposition.

AcceSS

Vehicles which have manually operated ramps will require the carer to be able to manually lift the ramp. The ramps are lightweight and easy to use so this is never a problem. Larger sized vehicles will have a lift instead of a ramp. While this is an excellent option for those who don’t wish to use a ramp, a lift will take up more space inside the vehicle and can take longer to use in general. Don’t forget that a lift also needs maintaining.

All wheelchair accessible vehicles are fitted with either a ramp or a lift on the back or side, although WAVs with side access are very rare. Ramps on the rear of the vehicle can work well for those who have driveways or plenty of space behind the vehicle when parking. Side ramps, on the other hand, mean the wheelchair user can disembark straight onto the pavement. However, in car parks side ramps mean that you must find an appropriate space with

SeAting ArrAngement One factor that doesn’t immediately come to mind for many people is the seating arrangement. If the vehicle is wheelchair accessible and doesn’t require the user to be transferred into a car seat, there are two options: having the wheelchair in the up-front passenger space or positioned in the back of the vehicle. The front passenger seat can be adapted and removed to allow for a wheelchair

docking system. This may be the preferred option if there are usually only the driver and the wheelchair user in the car. If there are several passengers, middle seating in the rear of the vehicle can be a good option. There are many configuration possibilities when it comes to an accessible vehicle with a side entry. If the carer is not the driver, this can be a better option because it allows the wheelchair user and the carer to sit side by side.

Safety As with all vehicles, safety is of the utmost importance. Most wheelchair accessible vehicles will have restraint belts that attach to the front and rear of the wheelchair to keep it locked in position. These are often adjustable and self-locking, working in a very similar way to traditional seatbelts. Make sure to test this out during a demonstration or test run of a new vehicle. It’s vital to feel both safe and comfortable.

CoSt and ConCeSSionS There’s no doubt about it, buying a new vehicle is a big investment and not one that you want to make lightly. If budget is a concern, it can be worth looking into second hand wheelchair accessible vehicles. There are many reliable dealers of

second hand vehicles, who will hold a large stock of vehicles to give you a choice to ensure that the vehicle suits your needs. Concessions are available for those who need to use wheelchair accessible vehicles. The Blue Badge Scheme entitles holders to free on-street parking without time limits, and parking on yellow lines for up to three hours in England and Wales, or without any time limit in Scotland. The scheme does not apply to off-street car parks such as supermarkets, but it does entitle badge holders to use the allocated disabled parking spaces.

one Size doeSn’t fit all At the end of the day, one size doesn’t fit all. When it comes to finding the wheelchair accessible vehicle that suits you, it’s essential to consider your specific needs and decide on a vehicle accordingly. Size, access, seating arrangements, safety and price are all factors that need consideration. A specialist dealer will have the expertise to help and advise you as to what vehicle may suit your requirements. Don’t be afraid to ask your dealer any questions and make sure you try the vehicle out for size, comfort and safety before making a final decision.

The Brotherwood Envy has arrived.

he Nissan eNV-200, on which the Envy is based, uses Nissan’s trusted plugin technology: sharing the 24kW battery and 80kW motor ePowertrain from the world’s bestselling electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf. This proven platform endows the Envy with a range of 106 miles, which when equipped with the Rapid Charge facility enables the battery to be fully charged in four hours, or topped up to 80% within just 30 minutes. The zero-emission powertrain offers significant savings in running costs for service providers requiring a multi-purpose vehicle with wheelchair accessibility, becoming the first WAV to offer Congestion Charge exemption, 0% Benefit-in-Kind until 2015, and ‘fuel’ cost reduced to as little as 2p per mile. Servicing costs are also thought to be approximately £350 lower than an equivalent petrol or diesel powered vehicle. With CO2 emissions of 75g/km or less, until March 2018 all Ultra-Low Emitting Vehicles (ULEVs) will benefit from 100% FYA First Year Allowance unlike the vast majority of petrol and diesel models available today.

Brotherwood ramp system, which slides neatly into the boot floor when not in use to create a flat luggage area when no wheelchair passengers are on board. Commenting on the launch, Brotherwood Managing Director John Daniel said: “Reaching this milestone in designing and manufacturing Europe’s first Fully Electric Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle has been embracing for the company in so many ways. The Nissan eNV-200 has enabled us to understand electric power and to embrace the new technology that is here to stay. We are very fortunate to have the technical support and direction from our local supplying dealer, F.J Chalke of Wincanton.”

The Brotherwood Envy conversion offers a true multi-purpose vehicle without compromise; the five standard passenger seats are retained, whilst the wheelchair user travels on a low, level and flat floor. Wheelchair loading is made fast and easy with the shallow, counterbalanced Brotherwood ramp and easy-use restraint system. The Envy is also the first vehicle to benefit from the newly designed

Car tips

HealtH CHeCk

A

car is one of the most expensive items that you can have in your possession. Whether you own or lease a car, it makes sense to look after it as best you can. These tips will help you keep your car in perfect working order all year round and help you identify any warning signs of problems so you can pre-empt potential issues. Your car should also be regularly serviced, but small investments of time and money can help avoid a big bill and most importantly, ensure the safety of you and your passengers.

3mm). Place the coin into the groove and if you can see the outer rim of the coin then they need changed. Tread less than 1.6mm isn’t just dangerous it’s illegal. Under-inflated tyres reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy so check the pressure often to ensure maximum performance, including your spare tyre.

Brake maintenanCe

The belt can become cracked, brittle and frayed or loose but it is critical to successful functioning of the electrical system, air-conditioning, power steering and cooling system so make sure to listen out for screeching warning signs.

Healthy brakes are paramount to your safety. Warning signs include screeching, vibrations, the car pulling to one side, the pedal being close to the floor before braking or hard to push. Brake shoes eventually wear out, causing damage to the break rotor that can be expensive to fix.

Oil Oil should be changed frequently as it flushes dirt and metal particles out of the engine, thus prolonging its life. Changing will also prevent the old oil from mixing with the new. The oil level can be observed on the metal wand and should be between the two markers.

ligHts Do not allow visibility to be compromised by checking all lights work from outside the car including fog lights. Inside lights are also very important as they allow you to examine interior instruments. Ensure lights are clean as dirt can obscure your vehicle to other drivers.

tyres Your tyres will wear at different rates and you must ensure that there is enough rubber to handle corners and slick surfaces. Simply use a 20p piece to check whether the tyres are safe and legal (over

50_taking_care_of_your_car_rt.indd 1

If snow and ice are forecast consider special tyres or snow chains. During winter, tyre pressure should be checked weekly.

Fan Belt

Be alert tO smells The smell of burnt carpet means trouble with your brakes, burnt rubber could signal a problem with the fan belt and an aroma of rotten eggs could mean that your catalytic converter is not converting hydrogen sulphide into sulphur dioxide in the exhaust.

maintain a Beauty regime A regular wash and wax can keep your car free from corrosion as waxing protects the paint, slowing oxidation and creating a barrier against pollution and debris. Wipe dashboard lenses and clean the car engine to help it run cooler and enable you to easily spot leaks and service components. Anti-freeze should be cleaned and flushed every two years.

rOad-side emergenCy kit Rain or shine (or snow) the last thing you want is to have a breakdown and be unprepared, especially with disabled travellers. Pack an emergency bag with a first aid kit and all necessary medication, a tyre jack and pressure gauge, jump leads, a torch, a scraper, and a blanket.
