Mmmmm. Beer. Those two words sum up the best reason to patronize The Bomb Shelter Bar on S. 2nd Street. While they have the beer that brings back my childhood (not that I was drinking them at the age of 8, but I remember them) like Schlitz and PBR Tall Boys, as well as the beer built for mass consumption like Miller and Budweiser, it is the vast variety of microbrews – both domestic and international – that steal the show. At last count their “Quick List” was
10
at 331 selections. No kidding, it was posted on the chalkboard at the entrance (and on the website). And as if that was not enough, it was thoughtfully written that if “you do not see your favorite on the list, just ask, as the list is changing continuously.” In other words, what you are looking for in a beer is probably found at The Bomb Shelter.
not have a closed “Members Only” feel. I was able to ask the bartenders about their selections (of which they were very knowledgeable) in order to narrow the “Quick List” to something a bit more manageable and hopefully find a new favorite.
The second best reason to patronize The Bomb Shelter – it is friendly, relaxing and inviting.
What undiscovered favorite will you find at The Bomb Shelter? For cheap drinks and intense specials, visit the Bomb Shelter during Packer’s games & throughout the week!
I was able to chat it up with the “regulars”. The atmosphere did
I know I found my new favorite – Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Ale.
HUÉ
(PRONOUNCED HWAY)
2691 S KINNICKINNIC, 414.294.0483 SUBMITTED BY: JAMIE ROHDE
When I arrived, I actually passed the unassuming façade located at KK & Logan. Upon a second pass, I saw the understated, yet fashionable sign welcoming me to Hué. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful hardwood floor; an elegant patchwork of dark and light wood. Complimenting the floor were natural wood tables and chairs. The walls, in contrast, were on one side of the room painted mustard yellow, and on the other side, dark red. A mix of photographs and paintings, both artsy and traditional, adorned the walls. The music was contemporary, eclectic, and unobtrusive. Each of the items on the menu (made of corkboard and metal) is in Vietnamese, so be adventurous and try to order a dish in its native language. And while the beer list is impressive for a small restaurant, try a Vietnamese “33” Export. Chopsticks are encouraged, yet if you find that, like me, you are too “American”, the kind servers will bring you a fork. Though small, the menu is packed with so many good choices of fresh food built for maximum culinary effect. The spring rolls were filled with fresh herbs and crunchy vegetables. The “shaking beef” was tender and well-seasoned on a bed of fresh greens. The Vietnamese “crepe” was rich and comforting and the flashed fried tofu with peanut sauce was light and classic. I definitely have to go back for more.
SABBATIC 700 S 2ND ST, 414.220.9440
SUBMITTED BY: LINDSEY KILLIPS
If you’re still looking to check out 2nd Street’s Union House Saloon- good luck. Last December marked the changing of the guard: the green and gold Union House sign was replaced by the Sabbatic S. Walker’s Point may not be one of your happy hour destinations, but Sabbatic should be. An almost life size painting of Sid and Nancy greet you as you step into what is a surprisingly open bar. Sure there are the required televisions and pool table, even a touch screen video game at the end of the bar- but they don’t get much use. With a hand selected jukebox that has artists from Tool and Talking Heads to Rancid and Ozzy, and bartenders that are itching to talk and roll dice, there isn’t much reason for other distractions. Unless your other distractions include alcohol- opening at 5pm and continuing until 9pm is Sabbatic’s almost unheard of happy hour- buy one, get one, ANYTHING in the bar. Monday nights might mean Rockabilly night with Billy Boy Brad and Sunday’s is Wizard Staff night with PBR tall boys. With Power’s as the official Sabbatic (rail) shot, it’s easy to add another hour or two to your stay. Getting out the door at closing may not be your only problem- ask about the Power’s shot at the end of the bar “for the ghost”, as he leaves around closing.

ALL BUSINESSES ARE OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION THAT SHOULD END IN NOVEMBER!
With a diversity that’s all too rare in Milwaukee, the neighborhood of Walker’s Point is home to a wide variety of night clubs, antique shops, arts groups and fantastic Mexican cuisine. Featuring some of the most beautiful Civil War and Industrial era architecture in the city, the neighborhood’s past is truly on display wherever you turn. Situated across from the Third Ward condos lining the Menomonee River, Walker’s Point started out in 1837 as a fur trading post for the eponymous George H. Walker. The German and Scandinavian immigrant population boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s contributed to the factories and warehouses that
dot the neighborhood to this day. The neighborhood became home to a new generation of Hispanic immigrants in the 1920s. Today, Walker’s Point is not only home to three generations of Hispanic families and businesses, but also serves as one of the premier LGBT districts in the Midwest. With an assortment of LGBT-friendly dance clubs and bars, not to mention the countless other clubs and restaurants that are equally friendly to all, the neighborhood is truly an example for all to experience. And experience it -- and love it --they have. The neighborhood’s popularity grows every year,
as vacant warehouses provide a canvas for renovated luxury condos and some of the last remaining open space will soon become home to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Science. It’s not just the autumn sun shining down upon Walker’s Point, the future is equally brilliant for this neighborhood success story.

TROCADERO GASTROBAR 1758 North Water Street 414.272.0205 Since our state has gone smokefree, three east side bars have preemptively cleaned their acts up by reinvigorating their spaces.
VINTAGE 2203 N. Prospect Ave. 414.276.2303
VON TRIER 2235 N. Farwell Avenue 414.272.1775 The beer and the atmosphere remain German. They have made a few changes, such as reviving the popcorn machine and adding TVs. While popcorn is a welcomed bar food in any setting, the TVs are a bit of a distraction. It is disappointing that the collage of old-world flair, which covers the walls of this bar, has to compete for your attention with whichever sport is in season.
14
The “new” Von Trier is just like it used to be, but tidier, with a clean interior. It’s nice to add to the North Ave bar scene. It is also the best outdoor patio in the area.
A new bar, Vintage, has taken over Vox’s great space, which features long walls of windows that make it a prefect location to enjoy either a warm summer night or to watch the snow fall. Very little was changed about the layout of this bar, except the removal of the small stage and the addition of a free pool table. The new owner has slowly been adding Pabst decorations, a tribute to his legacy as great-great-great-grandson of Capt. Frederick Pabst. Sadly, Vox’s collection of English-themed music is gone. As of now, this bar seems to be seeking to define itself within a crowded bar scene, hopefully over time it will find its niche. Here’s to hoping that the arrival of the indoor smoking ban will encourage many more local bars to follow this trend and refresh their own spaces.
The Diablos Rojos Restaurant Group, which has impressed local diners for the last several years with its take on the European café, recently renovated Trocadero’s space and menu to create a “gastropub.” The renovation included a needed reconfiguration of the space, specifically improving traffic flow by moving the bar to the front. The new menu is heavy on Mexican-inspired dishes, but of the type you would expect to find the Diablos Rojos staff to prepare. The final effect of the change is something like an American interpretation of a French cafe’s worldinspired restaurant (i.e. a bit confusing). The food and drinks are all very well done, the only complaint is that the new theme isn’t as consistent as we expected from them. The change has disappointed many who enjoyed the French cafe theme & wine bar. To go from French wine to Mexican margaritas is a big leap. A little pricey for what it is, but worth checking out the changes. Patio has stayed the same & is still a good brunch spot.
I think people forget that we have one of the Great Lakes outside our back door. I suppose if you don’t see it everyday, it’s easily done, but should not be forgotten about. We have one of the best resources to get out on the lake, that’s nationally acclaimed & provides lessons & boats to amateurs & enthusiasts: the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center. Have you ever seen the city from out in the middle of Lake Michigan? It’s pretty rad and much more possible than you thought. Not to mention-how green can a sport get? You’re learning how to harness wind power for recreation. Sounds pretty cool to me! Sailing doesn’t have to be a rich man’s sport. My family was never into boating, I didn’t have some uncle that took us out on his yacht, and I never thought I’d be able to learn how to sail unless I fell into some money or got myself a sugar daddy. Until, I joined MCSC. Looking at the lake dreaming about being out on the water was not as far out of my reach as I thought. Two weeks. That’s all it took to learn
the basic ropes and to meet a community of people that were enthusiastic about teaching me to sail and getting you out on the water. I did it after work from 5:30pm to sundown and was completely excited to be learning something new (my family in Florida was pretty jealous too.) Once you become a member and test for a light, medium or heavy air rating, you can sail til your hearts content! They have a fleet of nearly 80 boats that you have access to as a member & check out like library books. No joke. You can even take guests, free of charge, once you’re rated. Think about that guys-you get points just for taking a girl out on a date sailing. The ratings depend on your skill. Light air is mandatory for anyone to take out a boat, but can only do so for wind under 10 knots (not very fast at all.) The more wind under your sail, the more enjoyable, and the classes are great practice. It truly is a community where I’ve met all kinds of sailors through MCSC events like the Moonlit Sail to watch the moon come over Lake Michigan, or during races. If you aren’t rated for
heavy air and really want to sail that day, just hang out at the dock & any friendly person will take you aboard. Almost every time I go, I meet someone new & learn to become a better sailor. Besides, you gain a pretty cool title once you learn, you can now call me Skipper Kate. The MCSC is not-for-profit organization that has a brand new stateof-the-art building on Milwaukee’s Lakefront accompanied by a large fleet of boats, volunteers & instructors. Oh and as a member you get access to the lakefront & parking anytime of the year. You don’t have to be on the coast to sail, but right here in your city, Milwaukee. It’s a great resource to take advantage of, they have kids classes (I wish my parents sent me to sailing lessons instead of violin-that’s for sure!) & accommodations for physically challenged members as well. It’s affordable, unique & offers something most cities can’t. Check it out at www.sailingcenter.org

We recently attended the ever-growing Milwaukee Food Tours for their inaugural Brady St. tour. It was filled with delicious food, stories & enough time to walk from each place to digest and dig into the next dish. As a Brady Street resident & pseudo Milwaukee guide, I thought I knew everything interesting about the area, I walk up and down it everyday. Oh my-I was wrong! Apparently I didn’t know half of it! I was completely entertained and found such delight in the tour as a local. There were 4 other people on the tour, from Green Bay & from Brookfield: in otherwords, locals. We met at Zaffiros on Prospect on a warm Sunday. Honestly, I never ate there & was pleasantly surprised about this family owned pizzeria. There’s
26
an ongoing debate of square vs. triangle cut pizza. Thersea was our tour guide, owner & creator of Milwaukee Food Tours. She grew up in MKE & being Italian, visited Brady street often with her family since it was filled with Sicilian hertiage. Hence why Brady St. was the set for the first tour. Two of the main stops & most historically interesting were to Scortino’s Bakery and of course, Glorioso’s (Best deli ever.) There were 6 stops that took us over a mile’s walk. There was a table and food set out as soon as we arrived so we could dig in and be on our way to the next. They were healthy portions too, and things I wouldn’t have normally ordered, which was a treat and really appealed to the foodies. But over the two hours, you found yourself on a relaxing trip down history lane & quite satisfied, not stuffed.
We walked through the residential areas and made a few more stops to eat. Not all the places were filled with history, but simply had good food & offered something diverse to the area, although it would’ve been nice to have each place truly a landmark. But, you can’t forget that you’re on foot...gotta get back somehow! We were left at the Lakefront Brewery with cold brews, new friends & a satisfied appetite. It was great to see that locals were interested in their own city. Theresa said there are school groups and many tourists that join as well. But I found our day to be quite intimate & a great group. So if mom’s coming to town or the in-laws, take ‘em on the Third Ward Bloody Brunch Tour or even one through Wauwatosa. Totally worth
it for foodies, locals & history buffs alike. If you’ve got a few hours, are hungry & want to learn something new, check out Milwaukee Food Tours. They’ve got a Ghosts & Spirits tour coming up for Halloween which sounds fantastic, where they’ve combined food, drinks & MKE ghost stories! Check it out at www.milwaukeefoodtours.com.
DID YOU KNOW: That the big blue tiles that line the length of Brady Street are a symbolic art piece that connects the Milwaukee River to Michigan Lake? I bet you’ve crossed them a million times and never took notice. Look down, Each tile represents a key business or person to the Brady Street area.

Macaroni and Cheese has a history in the United States dating back to 1802 when our 3rd President Thomas Jefferson first served the dish in the White House. And what better to pair with your noodles than one of the many delicious cheeses from Wisconsin. Wisconsin cheeses have an illustrious heritage of more than 160 years of quality and craftsmanship. Today, Wisconsin produces more than 600 varieties, types and styles of American,
28
international-style and original cheeses that win more awards than any other state or country. With such a traditional dish such as Macaroni and Cheese, there are many different interpretations that have set each apart and make your taste buds scream for more. But, where in Milwaukee are the most delectable plates of cheese and pasta? We scoured the city and came up with the Top 5 definitive list of Absolute-Must-Have Mac n’ Cheeses.
TRISKELE’S 1801 SOUTH 3RD
Tucked away in the outskirts of Walker’s point and Bay View, is a small restaurant that harbors the absolute gem of Milwaukee’s Macaroni and Cheeses. Triskele’s talented chef adds quality cheeses and no “fillers” to a heavy cream and a parmesan reduction. The customer can choose between 3 different cheeses (aged cheddar, goat AND/OR gorgonzola), as well as the option of adding chicken or Andouille sausage. 2 Cents and the Chef both recommend getting all three cheeses on your plate to create a experience your mouth will not soon forget.
STACK’D 170 SOUTH 1ST
The Third Ward has gained a new staple for delicious burgers and Stack’d Bar definitely enters the Macaroni and Cheese world swinging. Featuring Wisconsin cheddar and smoked gouda cheese it has become a standard among many, but adding a touch of blue cheese gives this dish a suckerpunch! If you’re looking to add an extra something to your dish, this menu includes the unconventional option of adding turkey. After one bite, you will never add chicken again. The turkey is so moist in comparison that it deals the final blow to an amazing meal.
GINGER 235 SOUTH 2ND
As if Ginger wasn’t already a wonderful place to enjoy wine and tapas, featured on their menu is a small plate so full of flavor you are sure to be ordering it time and time again. Ginger’s talented treatment of combining 6 different cheeses (asiago, romano, grana padano, mozzarella, parmesan, and fontina) and added use of rosemary, sets this ‘Mac’ apart. And with the added option of a succulent garlic herbed chicken. This is sure to be one dish that will not disappoint. Try it out during happy hour (5-7 Tues-Fri) when tapas are only $3!
TIMES SQUARE
BISTRO 605 SOUTH 1ST
Hidden in a most uncommon place is a pizzeria and bistro that packs a punch. The Macaroni and Cheese here is one for the books. Using a cavatapi noodle that is made with semolina rather than wheat, which most macaroni contains, the pasta has a better bite to it. Using Wisconsin cheeses and a mozzarella that is also used on their pizzas, this bowl has a dab of Sriracha sauce, which you don’t quite taste, but would miss if it wasn’t there. And at such a great price it can double as a tasty lunch or dinner as well!
CAFÉ
HOLLANDER 2608 NORTH DOWNER
Hollander has a long standing flame for creating comfort food that warms the soul, and their debut of a goat cheese puts them on 2 Cent’s map! Created with a tasty goat cheese from New Holland, Pennsylvania, where they specialize in Belgian cheeses, This dish turns Mac and Cheese on its head with its unique flavors. They also use a Rosemary Oil which adds a subtle sweetness and goes well with the goat cheese. This plate is so great that even the employees love it too!
