Holiday Heritage Norskedalen Old-Fashioned Christmas By Michael Scott You know the scene. There are variations but it is usually bathed in twilight; a horse-drawn sleigh carries revelers with gifts to the snow-covered yet warmly lit farm house. The barn is bedecked with a large evergreen wreath as children construct a snowman in the front yard. Off in the distance, skaters enjoy a frozen pond as the moon rises over the rolling hills. It is the scene of an idyllic rural American Christmas. And this year, as they have for the last 30 years, Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center (near Coon Valley, Wis.) is inviting you to step into this very scene 6

with their Old-Fashioned Christmas in December event. Held the first Saturday and Sunday of December, this event is as cozy and inviting as they come. Imagine snuggling together as two large draft horses gently pull a jingle-bell-jeweled wagon by the holiday-decorated Norwegian pioneer buildings. Over the snow-crusted prairie drift the songs of carolers outside the Benrud Little White Chapel, a Lutheran church which was originally built in Sparta in 1886 and moved to Norskedalen in 2009. Taste the Norwegian meatballs,

the lefse and rommegrot, and a cream pudding at the a la carte buffet of foods. Smile for a photo from Santa’s lap atop an old-fashioned sleigh. You can even pick up your Christmas tree and do your gift shopping. This event kicks off the holiday season, and I’d venture that you’d be hardpressed to find a more charming event. There are demonstrations that include spinning, wood stove cooking and kids’ crafts. There is also a scavenger hunt for the kids. Raffle tickets will determine the winners of fresh Red Angus beef and a Christmas quilt created by award-winning artisan Joyce Abernathy.

FAMILY FUN With bright, fluffy snow cover, guests can enjoy cross country skiing or snow shoeing. Imagine exploring the 400 scenic acres that surround the area. Enjoy pine groves, natural bubbling springs and wooded hillsides that are home to a wide variety of birds and animals. Yes, if you haven’t already, you simply must make Norskedalen’s Old-Fashioned Christmas a holiday tradition in your family. And, once the festivities are over, I’d like you to take your brand new calendar for 2015 and write

7

“Norskedalen” in the margin of every single month. That will serve as your reminder. Norskedalen is open year-round. “Some people think we hibernate in the winter,” said Tammy Potaracke, operations manager at Norskedalen. “It’s not the case, and we have programs running throughout the entire year.” As part of their mission of preservation, interpretation and education, Norskedalen offers a wide variety of activities, classes and special events. The events are as inviting as their titles: Sweet, Sweet Spring; Midsummer Fest; Ice Cream Social; Threshing Bee; The Civil War Immersion Weekend;

One Ugly 5K

The Ugly Sweater 5K Run By Sara Walters

If you’ve ever participated in a road race, you’ve given some thought to your attire. But when you lace up for the Ugly Sweater 5K, there’s no guesswork involved. For once, donning your most appalling apparel is protocol.

would help give the event a fresh spin. “Last year many participants had a lot of fun dressing up in their ugly sweaters and covering themselves in holiday decorations,” shared Meg Carey, event chairman. “We decided to continue the theme again this year.”

The idea behind this funny, familyfriendly event, scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 14, came from the rebranding of the original Rotary Lights 5K. When Rotary After Hours, a La Crosse-based group of young, enthusiastic business leaders, took the reins in 2013, they decided a hilarious holiday theme

Although the race, previously attended by such holiday celebrities as Buddy the Elf and The Grinch, is held in jest, the cause it supports holds true to the spirit of giving. The funds raised support two important literacy projects, one internationally and one locally. Carey and the rest of Rotary

After Hours are “dreamers and doers who passionately drive projects to develop our youth, our community and our world,” she explained. The Ugly Sweater 5K embraces this passion by raising money for a school district in Uganda where students are in desperate need of supplies and accommodations. In the Coulee Region, the race also provides funding for the R.E.A.D Clinic, a youth tutoring center. Community support from Rotary After Hours doesn’t stop there; the group’s efforts continue yearround with a Mini Masters mini golf tournament and an annual Halloween event.

An energetic team of organizers combined with a fun-loving theme has proven to be a winning combination for the Ugly Sweater 5K. It also doesn’t hurt that the race, which starts at 4 p.m. outside the Radisson near the Three Rivers Lodge, gets runners in the holiday spirit by finishing through the tunnel of lights at Riverside Park. For those deterred by the uncertainty of winter weather, Carey and her team have thought of everything. “In Wisconsin, that [the weather] seems to be a common question no matter what time of year an event is scheduled for,” she said. “We are always hoping that the weather will be fair for our event and it will not be too cold. We

arrange with the La Crosse Park and Rec department to help clear the roads and race route in the park,” she added. With safety in check, participants are left to worry about only one thing — digging deep in their closets for their ugliest of sweaters.

Stick a Feather in It!

The 20th Annual UW-L Turkey Trot By Michelle Jerome

Gobble gobble! It’s the time of year we start seeing six-foot-tall turkeys running through the marsh … six-foot-tall Turkey Trotters, that is! Don your feathers and race shirts and join over 2,000 runners at the 20th Annual UW-L Turkey Trot! Jenny Larson, sport club and events coordinator, explained that the Recreational Sports Department at UW-La Crosse holds this annual 5K run to raise funds for various causes. 16

2do

LaX.com

The proceeds provide Multi-cultural Department student scholarships and scholarships to allow students to attend Recreational Sports conferences. In addition, an annual community benefactor is named, and a large portion of the funds are gifted to them. The 2014 recipient is the Outdoor Recreation Alliance. Larson stated that her department “looks for organizations with upcoming big projects that will need help” to determine the annual community benefactor.

When you’re registering to trot, grab some fellow gobblers and sign up your rafter (group of turkeys) to join the team contest! The community team with the most members will win a Subway sub platter party, and the UW-L campus team with the most members will receive a Toppers pizza party. If that’s not enough, dress up for the Turkey Trot costume contest. Larson said in years past, super heroes and even a “whoopee cushion” joined the turkeys.

The race will use MyLaps BibChip chip timers and will award the top overall male and female finishers and the top three runners in each age division. Kids can join the fun and sign up for the Jr. Gobblers dash, half-mile, or mile races. Nearly 200 kids register each year!

Raising Money for the Red Cross By Heidi Blanke Eleven area celebrities are dusting off their dancing shoes, ready to show their moves at the ninth annual Red Cross Dancing with the La Crosse Stars event. You can help them win the competition by making a donation or buying tickets; all profits go toward Red Cross projects.

Get Ready

wanting to get in on the action. Each pair is responsible for selecting their costumes and choreography, assisted by pros in the field. No tights and tutus here, but, instead, creative outfits and dance steps, from the can-can to the tango. This year’s dance studios include Amanda’s Academy of Dance, La Crosse Dance Centre, and Nicole’s School of Dance.

Celebrities from areas as diverse as entrepreneurship, government and medicine are teamed with professional dancers from local dance studios. It’s not only an honor to be chosen; there’s a waiting list of celebrities

The dance performance is the culmination of the event, but fundraising is what it’s all about. The money goes to the Red Cross, and it “helps with all the services and programs we deliver here and

throughout the community,” says Kyle Kreigl, CEO of the Northwest Wisconsin and Scenic Bluffs chapters. Of course, there are numerous blood drives held throughout the year. But the Red Cross, Kreigl explains, also provides disaster relief, such as that during house fires or tornadoes; supports military, their families, and veterans dealing with the challenges of military service; and offers health and safety programs like CPR, first aid and baby-sitting training. “One of the programs we just launched this year, with help from the money that we’ve raised, is the Certified Nurse Assistant Program. We’re training individuals to become CNAs in our community. This is a need we’ve been told about by our community,” Kriegl explains.

Get Set This year, the Red Cross anticipates the event will raise $160,000, up $20,000 from last year. Aside from sponsorships, the celebrities raise the money, and they do some fancy footwork to get there. From Facebook pages, to brat sales, to their own fundraising letters, celebrities pull out all the stops when it comes to fundraising. After all, a portion of the competition is based on the amount of money the celebrities bring in.

SHOW TIME

Celebrities also earn points from ticket sales. With up to 3000 tickets available (a sell-out crowd at the La Crosse Center), celebrities aren’t just tiptoeing around; they’re racing to sell tickets at break-dance speed. Kreigl says, “I’ve seen sales as high as 400 tickets sold, and the tickets are $20 apiece; each ticket sold counts toward their total.” Winning is a combination of dollars raised and dance score. The dancers “have two totals,” Kreigl explains, “a fundraising total and their score from their dance. So, to give an example, let’s say a celebrity finished first in fundraising, so that’d be 10 points,

plus the judges’ score, that’d be 30. They could have up to a potential score of 40.” It’s easy to help out your favorite celebrity. Simply go to www.redcross. org/wi/la-crosse and look for Dancing with the La Crosse Stars. You’ll find photos and bios of each couple and a donation link.

“It’s completely up to them on what they choose. But, they work with their professional dancer/partner, who really walks them through on some steps.” A few celebrities offer sneakpeek videos on their Facebook pages. Dancing with the La Crosse Stars reaches near sell-out status, so get your tickets now. Rumor has it a national Dancing with the Stars celebrity may just pirouette into town to join the judges. With your help, a crew of Coulee Region celebrities will be dancing the night away. Don’t miss this once a year event. One-two-cha-cha-cha.

If You Go

Go This year’s judges are Madeline Sky from WXOW, Jen O’Brien from MidWest Family Broadcasting Group, and Bob Mock from Family Tree Floral and Greenhouse. Dances and costumes vary each year, with some celebrities theming their costume and dance with their occupation. They have free rein when it comes to samba versus polka. “It kind of goes with their personality and what they want to do,” says Kreigl. 22

In La Crosse, Wis., a tradition started that resonates still today: the Annual Holiday Fair now hosted at the La Crosse Center, which was built in 1980.

GET FESTIVE Nov. 20-23 of 2014, vendors and eager shoppers will descend upon the La Crosse Center to produce the area’s most spectacular craft show. Families in the area have made it a not-to-bemissed tradition. “I can remember coming with my mother and sisters when I was a little girl,” said event organizer Sue Wieman. “This is the only event produced by the La Crosse Center, and over the weekend we will have around 10,000 attendees,” continued Wieman. There is something for everyone at this much anticipated event.

the holiday magic. La Crosse Dance Centre gives guests a preview of their annual Nutcracker production. Donations made by area crafters and downtown merchants are given away as door prizes. Six winners are announced every hour, every day. All of this adds up to a whole lot of holiday cheer and fun for the entire family. It’s going to give all who attend a heaping dose of Christmas cheer and give our community an official kickoff to the Christmas season.

There will be over 130 booths crammed full of great holiday gifts and crafts. Among the wide array of items for sale you will find ornaments, decorations, clothing, toys, homemade candy and fudge. You can make your holiday gift giving even more special by supporting local craftspeople and artists. A certain resident from the North Pole will be there, as well as his guiding light, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Kids can get some valuable face time with the big fella as you get photos for memorable Christmas cards, family newsletters and gifts. Adding to the festivities, local vocal groups provide carolers to enhance 25
