Sudden Injuries inAthletes and Life Saving Procedures

I have one favor to ask of each and every one of you who have long loved the power of positivity that the sports world can bring. As this football season draws to an eventful close, this is a year that will never be forgotten by any of us.This year beyond any other brought to light unity and positivity and generosity like no other year I have witnessed. What is the favor I ask of you? Learn CPR.

The events of Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest in front of our collective eye as a nation exposed some amazing heroes behind the scenes that rarely get attention. Something I learned is the hour before an NFLgame there is a meeting of the medical, technical, coaching, referees, etc…They actively plan for medical emergencies and name where all theAED’s are (defibrillator kits,) who plays what role if some event occurs, who responds how and where, where the ambulance is, where trauma center is, etc, which played a huge roll in saving Damar Hamlin’s life.At the base of it all was CPR. No matter who you are or where you are, signing up for a simple $15 CPR course… could make you a hero.

So many issues were brought to the forefront by this tragedy turned blessing but no matter who you are, where you are, you could save someone’s life, someone’s loved one, child, friend on a field, plane, playground, concert etc… because of the events we watched unfold for this NFLplayer and the hero’s who saved his life.YOU could be that hero or someone could be a hero for you, forbid that day arise.

Knowledge, a quick response and quick assessment of a dangerous situation can be planned and must be planned. CPR is used and saves lives everyday and don’t hit the national news because the victim was not someone famous. That person may not be famous but they are important to some one. CPR classes teach you how to be calm and recognize that a person is in cardiac arrest and how to perform the procedure correctly There are many online CPR courses and extremely inexpensive and at a low level of difficulty so no reason not to learn this simple procedure.

I pray events like what we witnessed as a nation never happens again, but know planning and prevention are key and can be done at any level and should be done. Do me this favor which really isn’t for me but for someone’s somebody to arrive home. I’m proud to say Damar Hamlin was discharged and back in Buffalo all because of that prevention and planning. Search online “CPR courses near me” and be a hero in the making.

I’m certainly going to miss my football but until next year… you have your marching orders! Learn CPR!

Do I hearTriple Crown?

Everyone knows that winning a championship isn’t easy. But trying to win again? An even taller task. That is exactly what the Men’s University of the Incarnate WordTrack & Field team is aiming to do this track season.

In 2022, the mens team was able to win the Southland Conference Indoor title as well as the Outdoor title. Both of these wins were not only record setting point totals for the men, but also the first titles in program history for the SanAntonio Catholic university. The team is led by local stellar Decathlete Isaiah Hudgens who placed second in the Heptathlon and had a top in finish in the 60 meter hurdles, and pole vault during the indoor season. In the outdoor season, Hudgens scored a total of 24 points alone during the decathlon and 4 other individual events. When asked about what it feels like to be a big part of this championship squad, he quickly directed the attention back to the team as a whole. “We were a unit, let me rephrase, we are a unit. It was a lot of fun to come together and have a good time in Birmingham and Humble. The rings were an added bonus”. With the Southland conference expanding and adding two more teams to the eight that were apart of the 2022 season, it is clear that the cardinals have a target on their back.

There is always added pressure when having to defend a title. “Yes, we are defending champs, and there is definitely added pressure” stated Hudgens when asked if he feels pressure going into the 2023 season. “But as track athletes our job is not to beat other teams, it’s to beat ourselves, so, all we need to win another championship is improve more than the other team, and I’m confident we have that in the bag”.

The Cardinals mens cross country team kicked off the beginning of cross country season with a bang by winning the first even cross country Southland title in school history. They were led by Student athlete of the year Griffin Neal and second team all conference winner Chris Daniels. With a title in each possible categories under their belt, the mens team looks to be the first Southland team to pull off the triple crown (a cross country title, indoor title, and outdoor title all within one school year) in over 30 plus years.

The cardinals kicked off their indoor season this past weekend in Lubbock at the Corky Classic. During the meet, 4 mens school records were broken and within those 4, 3 of them were broken by freshman. With this new class coming in and making noise early, it is clear that the defending champs went and got even stronger in their quest to pull off what is seen as the impossible.

My entrance into the professional sports world started with a phone call. I was eang dinner at Texas Roadhouse, when my friend called and simply asked, “How would you like to be a trainer with a professional basketball team?” Shocked, I responded with “I’ll call ya when I am done with dinner.” It was as close as I could get to Lou Brown telling the Cleveland Indians, “I’ll have to think it over and call ya back. I have a guy on the other line about some white walls.” I really didn’t take the offer seriously, but 24 hours later, I was standing on a court in front of the University of Texas and San Antonio Spurs legend Johnny Moore.

One of the quietest professional athletes I had ever come across, Johnny Moore is the epidemy of the phrase “the quietest man in the room, who is being observant, is the smartest and the strongest in the room.” But would you expect anything less from a man who defeated death and bears the scars to prove it?

His college career is rarely talked about today, but by the me the dust seled on the court in the Erwin Center in 1979, he had helped Abe Lemons win Coach of the Year Honors in 1978, started every game in his 4-year career, and le as one of UT Ausn’s greatest stascal leaders of all me. His stascal feats include scoring more points than any Longhorn in the previous 2 decades prior to his arrival and with his 714 assists, which is sll holding as a record over 3 decades later.

Aer being draed in the 2 nd round by the Seale Super Sonics in 1979, the Basketball Gods had a plan to keep Johnny in Texas, as he was traded to the Spurs shortly aer being draed. During his time in the NBA, it was evident Johnny was playing chess while many others were just playing checkers. With his ability to ancipate his teammates moves, understand their abilities, and with his situaonal awareness, he was able to feed the ball at the right me creang future hall of famers and basketball greats. Even though Johnny Moo re went on to be one of the Spurs all-me greats, as a basketball fan I feel sad for the fans that were unable to see him grace the courts before his career was tragically cut short.

SanAntonioFCBringsSuccesstoSanAntonio

After being so close yet so far in 2021, San Antonio FC went all the way in 2022, claiming the USL Championship crown.

In front of a packed house at Toyota Field on a cold night on November 13th San Antonio FC completed the double, backing up a regular season crown with a 3-1 win over perennial contenders Louisville City FC.

The win was nothing less than San Antonio FC deserved for a dominant season. SAFC had never lost two games in a row all season, and despite criticism from vanquished Western Conference Finalists, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, proved that they were a very good team.

Head Coach Alen Marcina had a style in mind and to achieve that style he needed the right players “mentality monsters” was the phrase that went around. That was the kind of player he wanted, and the kind of player he got.

Like many teams in the league, it’s not made up of superstars, a reality of non-top flight soccer anywhere in the world, but especially in the United States. But they became superstars, they became legends of the 210, and there’s no doubt that much of this squad will go on to bigger and better things, even if it’s not here in San Antonio.

The season begun with a 1-0 win over Detroit City FC, thanks to a 68th minute goal from Fabien Garcia. Even that early there were signs of what this team would produce through the long season.

14

Marcina knows that it’s defense that won championships, he’s the only Head Coach in San Antonio soccer history that’s won, and now he’s done it twice. In winning in 2014 with the Scorpions his team had the strongest defense, and that was the same again.

As a result it was no shock that the two San Antonio FC players that made the USL Championship All-League first team were defensive. Mitchell Taintor was a vital cog at the heart of the San Antonio FC defense, he controlled things well and seemed to have a magic ability to keep the ball in front of him. The other, Jordan Farr, was a brick wall in the goal for the Alamo City. Much like the defenders of the Alamo he always fought until the very end, he made sure that he gave his all and if his team lost it wasn’t without him giving everything he had.

So it was unsurprising that one of the images that summed up the season was from Jordan Farr. It wasn’t even a league game but it was perhaps the most emotional night San Antonio soccer had seen outside of league Championships. Facing Austin FC, the team given admission to Major League Soccer, in dubious circumstances, ahead of San Antonio in the US Open Cup, a brave performance from Farr gave San Antonio a memorable win. Following his win his backflip was the image that reflected the joy of the city at beating a team they have plenty of animosity with.

It's often felt like this was San Antonio FC’s best chance at winning a league title. In the USL Championship it’s hard to keep a team, especially a successful team, together. With so much success for San Antonio it’s only natural for these players to think about bigger things. That’s why the club has structured so many option years into many contracts, to try and keep the core of the squad together.

2023 will see some significant changes for the club, every year does, the league will also see changes. The MLS reserve teams will be departing the league, which should make for a much tighter competition. This team is special and Marcina will make sure the “mentality monsters” have the right mind-set for 2023 to try and defend the title.

Cowboys:ContendersorPretenders?

No one can deny that the Dallas Cowboys are having an exceptional season. Let's face it… Can they really pull this o ffand bring a Super Bowl home?

Jerry Jones has promised a championship since 96’. From then on, the Cowboy’s have come close and fallen short each year. Fans across the country are eager to see if Mike McCarthy’s coaching skills and Dak Prescott’s field play will finally pay o fffor “America’s Team”.

The Cowboy’s were originally projected to finish their season 11-6 before entering the playoffs. They currently boast a record of 12-5 at the end of their regular season despite facing injuries and other inconsistent efforts from their questionable coaching staff. Dallas successfully beat 6 of the first 8 opponents they faced during the height of their season.Although the stats were great, Dallas has fostered an example of overtaking underachieving teams while missing the win against tough opponents like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Philadelphia Eagles who both finished leaders in their divisions.

18

Many questions have been raised throughout the season about the team. Is Mike Mcarthy on the hot seat with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for constantly fumbling the bag each year and lacking the coaching skills to bring home a championship? Will Dak Prescott stay healthy enough on the field and prove he is actually worth 160 million dollars? Lastly, the question we all ask ourselves; Will the team be consistent enough to win the whole thing?

The Dallas Cowboys ranked top ten in least amount of penalties and had a top ten defense in the NFL this season. Presscot has had a questionable season with an injury in their first official game. Sadly, he couldn't make it through the first four quarters of the game before fracturing his thumb. While recovering, Dak missed 5 games but was able to finish the season strong. Ranking 13th in touchdown passing and 12th in QBR rating. Some say he could achieve better with the amount he is paid, but after recovery and tensions on the field, Prescott was tied for the most interceptions thrown this season.

In the last half of their season, The Cowboys secured three key wins. One against The NFC North leader Minnesota Vikings where the Cowboys defense successfully shutdown one of the high power offenses in the league cruising 40-3. Other wins were against two division foes; New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles (tying their season series at 1-1). During their quick winning spree, The Cowboys also endured two tough overtime losses against The Green Bay Packers and The Jacksonville Jaguars. Going into the last week of their regular season the Cowboys still

Monthly Combat Sports column!

A year in Review! 2022 brought us a whole new view into Combat Sports! Myself as well as the World got to see a Change in the throne...Not just the one in the U.K (our condolences) The UFC received a new Royalty in both the Welterweight and middleweight division as unbeatable fighters not only received their first lost in the Promotion, but both losing their Championship Titles.

Kamaru Usman losing to Leon Edwards and Isreal Adesanya losing to Alex Pereira. We also received some tough losses in both Anthony Johnson who lost his battle against non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and also in Ultimate Fighter Season 1 veteran Stephan Bonnar who passed away at age 45 from “presumed heart complications” .

The PFL (Professional Fighter League) reigned Supreme, as the #2 MMA promotion in the World (this just in; Jake Paul signs 2 fight contract) So the World is watching. Bellator MMA coming in 3rd and Combate Global whom has been hailing from way of Miami,FL coming in #4 but, #1 as the leading Spanish Speaking combat MMA league in the U.S.

Here in the Regional circuit (Texas) we had a surge in Combat Sport platforms. With now more MMA Promotions taking charge and picking up momentum. We have the oldest Promotions in the State such as the XKO (Xtreme Knock Out) who put on both Muay Thai/MMA bouts in both amateur and Pro , Fury FC who are the only Promotion in the State on the “UFC Fight Pass” platform. They as well put on both amateur / Pro bouts and not to mention “grappling only” format which they have been doing for years.

Paradigm Combat Sports out of Houston Texas have been doing their own Hybrid Style) platform with both Boxing and MMA... Amateur promotions include; Texas Clash , Tap or Scrap and the newest Promotion MG Fighting Championship with their first event going down Jan 14th in Lake Jackson,TX.

The Texas Catch Wrestling bringing catch wrestling back to life! Submission only style platform inside a Cage. Takedowns only and slams are allowed, talk about intense..

For those local to San Antonio,TX. Don’t miss out Jan 29th Fury FC 73 invades the Alamo City. TWO-DIVISION CHAMPION REYVARGAS BATTLESTOPCONTENDER

O’SHAQUIE FOSTER FOR VACANTWBC SUPER FEATHERWEIGHTWORLD TITLE LIVE ON SHOWTIME® ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY11 IN

PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS EVENT

SanAntonio-Native and Former Champion Mario Barrios Duels Jovanie Santiago in Co-Main Event and Cuban Heavyweight Sensation Lenier Pero Faces

Undefeated Viktor Faust inTelecast Opener Live from theAlamodome in San Antonio,Texas

Undefeated two-division world champion Rey Vargas will battle top 130-pound contender O’Shaquie Foster for the vacant WBC Super Featherweight World Championship in a showdown that headlines action live on SHOWTIME Saturday, February 11 from theAlamodome in SanAntonio,Texas topping a Premier Boxing Champions event.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIPBOXING® telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PTand also features former champion and all-action SanAntonio-native Mario “ElAzteca” Barrios, now trained by top trainer Bob Santos, returning to the ring in a 10-round welterweight duel against Jovanie Santiago that serves as the comain event. Kicking o ffthe action, hard-hitting unbeaten heavyweights go toe-to-toe as Cuba’s Lenier Pero takes on Ukraine’s Viktor Faust in a 10-round attraction.

“One of the best fighters representing Mexico in the sport today, Rey Vargas will look to continue to add to his resume in a tough fight against O’Shaquie Foster for the vacant WBC Super Featherweight WorldTitle,” saidTom Brown, President ofTGB Promotions. “Vargas has continued to pass every test put in front of him, and he’ll hope to do so once again on Saturday, February 11 on SHOWTIME. SanAntonio is one of the best fight towns in the country, and with their hometown star Mario Barrios in the co-main event, plus an explosive clash of unbeaten heavyweights as the telecast opener, there’s no doubt fight fans will want to be out in full force at theAlamodome.”

Vargas (36-0, 22 KOs) is a former WBC 122-pound world champion and current WBC Featherweight World Champion who will compete in his third weight division since 2019 when he faces Foster for the vacant WBC crown.Amaster of distance with every punch in the book at his disposal, Vargas captured his 126pound world title in his last bout with a decision victory over Mark Magsayo at theAlamodome on SHOWTIME last July That marked his second outing at featherweight after the 32-year-old returned from a layo ffdue to injury to score a near shutout decision victory over Leonardo Baez in his featherweight debut in November 2021.The product of Otumba, Mexico went on the road to the United Kingdom to capture his super bantamweight title in 2017, winning a decision over previously unbeaten Gavin McDonnell, before racking up five successful title defenses. He has fought in the United States seven-straight times since picking up the 122-pound title.

23

“TheAlamodome is definitely a beautiful venue and a place where I have wonderful memories, and we’re coming back to do it again on February 11,” Vargas said. “I want to thrill the fans so Foster can come at me with whatever he has. Let’s give the fans what they want. I’ve fought all kinds of styles, so nothing really surprises me. I have a hunch that Foster is going to come forward and be aggressive. If he fights me tactically, then I’ll be ready for that too.”

Following an extensive amateur career, Foster (19-2, 11 KOs) turned pro in September 2012, winning his first eight bouts. The 29-year-old, who has fought four times on SHOBOX:The New Generation®, bounced back from decision losses in 2015 and 2016 to put together his current nine-fight winning streak.Anative of Orange,Texas, who now trains in nearby Houston, Foster scored a 2018 victory over the previously unbeaten Jon Fernandez that set him on his path toward the top of the WBC super featherweight rankings. Foster solidified his spot with a knockout of veteran former title challenger Miguel Roman in November 2020 and followed that up with a 12-round unanimous decision over the previously undefeated Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov in March of last year.

“I appreciate Vargas for coming up and challenging me for the world title,” Foster said. “I’ve had to take a lot of ‘0’s’lately and Vargas is going to be another one on the list. I’m looking to become the first world titlist to come out of my city so that I can make history for Orange,Texas and raise the bar for the next generation. I’m ready to show the world that I’m one of the top fighters.”

The 27-year-old Barrios (26-2, 17 KOs) returns to the ring after challenging former unified welterweight champion KeithThurman in February 2022, dropping a decision in a hard-fought clash. The SanAntonioproduct, who now trains with Santos, a top coach, in Las Vegas, became a 140-pound world champion in September 2019, using his aggressive style to edge out BatyrAkhmedov and earn a unanimous decision. Barrios lost the super lightweight title in another action packed, highly competitive bout, as he was defeated by three-division and five-time world champion Gervonta Davis in June 2021.

“Everyone knows I come with everything I got when I step into the ring, and I’m excited to be back for this big opportunity on SHOWTIME,” said Barrios. “I’m even more motivated knowing that I get to fight back at home in SanAntonio and give my people a great fight. Everyone is going to see pure boxing entertainment as I’ll be putting my skills on display with bad intentions. I’ve proven that I’m a warrior every time I get into the ring and I’m bringing that same energy for Santiago.”

Born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and now residing in Dorado, Santiago (14-2-1, 10 KOs) impressed in his U.S. debut in February 2021 despite losing a competitive decision against four-division championAdrien Broner on SHOWTIME.The 31-year-old followed that up in May challenging top 140-pound contender Gary Antuanne Russell in a bout he lost by sixth-round stoppage. Prior to those fights, Santiago had won four of five contests by knockout, a streak that followed a 10-round decision triumph over DeMarcus Corley in 2017. Santiago’s only blemish before the Broner fight was a majority draw in just his third pro contest.

“This is going to be a very exciting fight,” said Santiago. “I’m ready to go in there and throw a lot of punches. Barrios and I are both looking to bounce back from losses and show that we’re elite fighters. That’s going to make this an action-packed fight and I know that I have everything it takes to leave with my hand raised. The fans in SanAntonio can expect us to give it our all from start to finish.”

24

A2016 Olympian from Camaguey, Cuba, Pero (8-0, 5 KOs) had an extensive and highly successful amateur career that spanned over 100 fights, including multiple victories over countryman Frank Sanchez and efforts against heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, heavyweight prospect Filip Hrgovic and Olympic Gold Medalist Bakhodir Jalolov. The 30-year-old now fights out of Miami, Fla., and made a successful U.S. debut on NewYear’s Day 2022, defeating then-unbeaten Geovany Bruzon. He’s added two more victories since then, most recently knocking out Joel Caudle in a bout streamed via the SHOWTIME SportsYouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook page inAugust.

“I’m really looking forward to making my SHOWTIME debut on February 11,” said Pero. “Ever since I started boxing, I’ve been working toward my goal of becoming the first Cuban heavyweight world champion. Faust is a good opponent, and this is by far the biggest fight of my career Avictory will skyrocket my career and put me in a great position. I’m going to seize this moment and bring home a victory for my people in Cuba.”

Faust (11-0, 7 KOs) returns to fight in the U.S. after his last stateside outing saw him engage in one of 2022’s most unpredictable and fast-paced slugfests. The 30-year-old squared o ffwith Iago Kiladze in January 2022 with both men hitting the canvas an astonishing five times combined in less than five minutes of action before the Ukrainian closed out the action in round two to earn aTKO. Faust has followed that up with decision wins over veteran title challenger Kevin Johnson inAugust and Franklin Lawrence in December before he returns to fight in the U.S. for the third time.

“This is a great opportunity for me to show o ffmy talents in the U.S.,” said Faust. “I’m especially happy to be back against a great opponent like Pero. He was a good amateur, and I know we’ll both be very confident heading into this fight. I’m going to win and show everyone that I’m ready to do everything possible to reach my goal and become world champion.”

J.J. Spaun Set to DefendTitle at ValeroTexas Open

Early Player Commitments Include Six Past Champions

SanAntonio GolfTournament Continues to Make Impressive Local Economic Impact

SANANTONIO,TX —As the ValeroTexas Open heads into a new century this spring, tournament officials announced today some past champion commitments for the 144-man field scheduled to compete in the historical PGATOUR stop onTPC SanAntonio’sThe Oaks course March 27 -April 2, a week precedingThe Masters tournament.

2022 champion J.J. Spaun, currently ranked 25th in the FedExCup standings on the strength of two top-12 starts the past few weeks, will defend his title. The San Diego State grad and current World No. 61, will attempt to become the first ValeroTexas Open champion to win back-to-back since this year’s U.S. Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009.
