FOOD
& WINE GUIDE for South Walton

The South Walton culinary scene continues to expand, giving diners more options than ever before
From grills to grapes and everything in between
Happy summer fellow foodies and welcome to the latest installment of the Food & Wine Guide for South Walton.
Having the privilege of being the publisher of the only food and wine magazine in South Walton, it can be a daunting task selecting which stories and profiles make it into the magazine each issue. This past year we have had a large influx of new establishments open here in paradise. Be sure to check out “Six new spots to sample” on page 14 for a starting point for all 30A has to offer.
As I have told anyone who will listen over the last 10 years, South Walton is America’s next great culinary destination. Our chefs and restaurateurs draw influences from all over the world to bring elevated dishes and cocktails to diners all year long.
In addition to great chefs and restaurants, South Walton boasts some of the best fall food and wine events in the country. Check out our stories on the upcoming Harvest Wine & Food Festival (page 44) and the Alys Beach Crafted event (page 48) taking place in October and November, respectively. And we are proud to be a media sponsor once again for the Eggs on the Beach cooking
competition (page 64) taking place on Nov. 2.
Looking for a comprehensive list of South Walton restaurants? Flip to pages 74 to 82 to start your summer bucket list of favorite places to dine here along the Emerald Coast.
And finally, a special thank you to all of our advertisers who make this magazine possible. With the cost of doing business increasing on a regular basis, it is an honor that our partners have chosen to work with us to help promote their establishments here in South Walton.
Until next time, bon appétit,

As a food writer and editor of this magazine, I have the honor of sampling much of what the South Walton culinary scene has to offer. Emerging trends aren’t hard to spot, like farm-to-table, clean-eating and plant-based cuisine, charcuterie boards – and from behind the bar – hard seltzers, ginger beer and the seemingly omnipresent dehydrated fruit. It is fun to watch an idea catch on and quickly spread across menus everywhere.
One trend I’m seeing that is quietly gaining some ground is the rise of mocktails. Move over Shirley Temple, these aren’t just the “special drinks” your kids ask for on vacation. These creations go much further than ordering that strawberry daiquiri “virgin.”
There are plenty of reasons for of-age adults to bypass the wine list in favor of something else. For all the designated drivers, expectant or nursing mothers, health-conscious sippers, folks living a life of sobriety or participating in “Dry January,” or those who never developed a taste for alcohol, bartenders nationwide have begun to take notice. Gone are the days you must settle for sparkling water, iced tea or soda. You have real, hand-crafted options!
The names for this section of the drink menu are as varied as the ingredients used. Look for monikers like Zero Proof, Unleaded, Spirit-Free or Temperance Drinks.
For example, over at Beach Camp Brewing Co. in Grayton Beach, you might select their Blackberry Mint Smash, a mix of blackberries, citrus, simple syrup and mint. Dining at
Havana Beach Bar & Grill? Look for the Garden Grove with its cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño, zero-proof spirit, vanilla and tamarind syrup, and lime juice. Or should you find yourself at Pescado, try the Summer Dreamsicle: an apricot, lemon and whipped cream concoction.
Where else can you find these marvels of mixology? You’re in luck, dear reader, as we have an entire list of local watering holes who see you and have a booze-free shaker at the ready, found on page 25. Don’t miss the other Top Spots list in this issue, a look at the best places in town to seek out international flavors, found on page 51.
And so, a toast to those of you who wish to dine without the wine. Let’s normalize the option of having a good time without the aid of ABVs – sometimes or perhaps all the time. This mocktail is for you, and perhaps best of all, no hangover included!

LaCo • By Jennifer Thompson
SEACREST BEACH – LaCo is the rebranded, shortened name from the original La Cocina, which opened in 2009. The transition was much more than a name change.
“In 2018, the menu transitioned from traditional TexMex to one featuring Latin coastal cuisine. These dishes are inspired by Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and more,” explained Tim Antignane, executive chef and overseer of culinary operations at LaCo. Former Executive Chef Eric Bartholomew was behind the new theme and menu.
“Prior to the cuisine switch, the restaurant was serving typical Tex-Mex dishes with rudimentary flavors and ingredients. The team found guests had very specific Mexican food they either liked or didn’t like, so Bartholomew and his team made a concerted effort to increase variety and to showcase more small plate-style dishes. The menu now features items from different regions of Latin America, as each area provides unique dishes and flavor profiles.”
Of course, the wonderful flavors of Florida are also a factor in the recipes.
“We source fresh, high-quality proteins and produce from Florida purveyors. For example, we receive deliveries every week from Water Street Seafood in Apalachicola.”
The location influence is seen when comparing LaCo to parent company Spell Restaurant Group’s restaurant BABALU, located in Memphis, Tenn., and with a similar theme. Though they are sister restaurants, there is no crossover.
“LaCo’s offerings feature more fresh seafood due to its location and BABALU’s dishes have more of a Southern spin. Both brands focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients and make their menu items from scratch. I served as executive chef for all BABALU locations from 2013 to 2020. Small world!” Chef laughed.
LaCo’s goal is to offer guests great meals with the freshest ingredients. This approach is also used at brunch, which is a local must-do.
“Think brioche french toast, steak and eggs, crab cake Benedict, and more,” Chef explained. “We have lighter
and more health-conscious options, too. The Buenos Dias Bowl features yogurt, fresh fruit, local honey, and gluten-free granola. Our two most popular food items are lobster avocado toast and sweet potato breakfast hash. The Mimosa Flight is a favorite, as well.”
The menu does not change seasonally, but does get adjustments at the first of the year.
“THE MENU NOW FEATURES ITEMS FROM DIFFERENT REGIONS OF LATIN AMERICA, AS EACH AREA PROVIDES UNIQUE DISHES AND FLAVOR PROFILES.”
– Tim Antignane executive chef
“In February, we added two amazing entrees guests are absolutely loving – Coconut Snapper and Mahi Tostadas,” Antignane said. “We started serving three popular desserts from our sister restaurant in Rosemary Beach, La Crema Tapas & Chocolate. Guests can now enjoy La Crema’s Chocolate Fondue, OMG Cookie, and Classic Cookies here at LaCo.”
These desserts are made in-house at LaCo using the exact La Crema recipes. When something is excellent, there is no need to change it!
LaCo has found itself and the future is bright for great food.
“I appreciate a menu driven by fresh ingredients, so I feel right at home here. I look forward to getting creative in the kitchen to develop new offerings guests will love,” Antignane concluded.
LaCo is located at 10343 E. County Hwy. 30A in Seacrest Beach. They are open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., happy hour from 3 to 5, and the full menu from 11 to 3 and then 5 to 9. They do not accept reservations, with no exceptions. Phone number is 850-231-4021. All checks paid by credit card are subject to a 3% non-cash adjustment. For more information go to laco30a.com.
Edward’s • By Liesel Schmidt
ROSEMARY BEACH – In a collection of restaurants that have become institutions along the Emerald Coast, Edward’s is one of The Spell Restaurant Group’s gems, boasting a menu that shows how magic results when refinement, technique and creativity come together in one dish. As much as each restaurant in the Spell family’s portfolio represents its own concept and possesses its own “personality,” Edward’s offers a more buttoned-up feel –with the tie loosened and one button undone.
“Edward’s atmosphere is upscale yet inviting,” said Christy Spell Terry, co-owner of The Spell Restaurant Group. “We’ve created a fun environment that is suitable for date nights, family dinners and everything in between. When walking through our doors here at Edward’s, guests can expect a welcoming atmosphere, beautiful decor, and a hospitable and knowledgeable staff ready to help create an unforgettable dining experience.”
Dishes tend toward what the team at Edward’s refers to as “Southern coastal,” pulling inspiration from the flavors
and traditions of Southern cooking that are so familiar, and combining them with the local seafood the region has become famous for. Coming alive under the deft hand of Johnson & Wales University alum Chef Joshua Smith, who has stood in the role of executive chef since 2017, each item on the menu speaks to his proficiency, expertise and passion for his craft.
“His dedication to working with local producers to source high-quality ingredients truly makes a difference in what we serve our guests,” Spell Terry said.
Signatures like the Simply Grilled Grouper and Capellini Pomodoro have been on the menu since Edward’s opened and have remained guest favorites over the years – and with good reason. Both show the elegance of simplicity, a balance of flavors and a respect for the ingredients being used. Joining the popularity contest amongst dishes on the menu are Bacon-Wrapped Quail with Grits and Tuna Za’atar – the former offering a nod to some very Southern flavors in its use of grits and molasses, while the latter
brings in the essence of the Middle East through its spices.
Menu options change with the season, three to four times per year, depending on changes in climate and the resultant availability of ingredients that drive said changes.
“This helps ensure the freshest ingredients possible are featured in our dishes,” said Spell Terry.
Joining their impressive menu is an extensive wine list boasting 92 bottles of domestic and international wines, covering all major regions and varietals. Incidentally, Edward’s wine program has received the Wine Spectator “Award of Excellence” for multiple consecutive years. All red wines are kept in the restaurant’s red wine coolers and served at cellar temperature, ensuring the best flavor at presentation and uncorking.
Naturally, the restaurant’s design is one that engenders the feeling of intimacy and creates a fine dining atmosphere, with a small, cozy dining room, as well as a beautiful courtyard perfectly sized for accommodating larger parties and families.
“WE’VE CREATED A FUN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS SUITABLE FOR DATE NIGHTS, FAMILY DINNERS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.”
– Christy Spell Terry co-owner
“The focus here is the food and the wine,” said Spell Terry.
“Edward’s is beloved because of our ability to provide a consistent dining experience for the entire family using quality ingredients, along with a unique and extensive wine list that can’t be found everywhere else.”
Edward’s is located at 66 Main St., Rosemary Beach. Open for brunch Wednesday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinner runs Sunday to Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday to Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. Reservations are not accepted. For more information, call 850-231-0550 or visit edwards30a.com.

WALTON COUNTY – Whether a local or a visitor, keeping up with all the new restaurants South Walton has to offer can be a challenge – although an enjoyable one! Our area continues to see unprecedented growth; check out these half a dozen dining destinations, new to the market!
Marrow Private Chefs has been a favorite on the private chef scene since 2018. You may have even seen this band of bearded foodies cooking up their latest creations at
many local charitable events around town. But the urge to put down some roots with a brick-and-mortar location arose, giving us the new Marrow Chefs’ Bar. Located in the plaza at 3906 U.S. Hwy. 98W in Santa Rosa Beach, this 75-seat venue currently offers beer, wine, cocktails, and small bites and shareables from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, and is even available for private bookings. For example, you might split their crawfish and corn dip with house cracklins and scallions, order a small plate of boudin-stuffed shrimp with spicy grape jelly and crispy leeks, and sip on a Smoked Chocolate Swine Envy cocktail, fearing pork belly s’mores-washed bourbon, orange Demerara and chocolate bitters.
Plans are to expand to curated tasting menus, interactive cooking classes and more! Reservations are not required, but they are available. For more information, find them online at marrowprivatechefs.com/chefsbar
The Outcasts have been making quite a name for themselves here in South Walton, first with Outcast Seafood in Miramar Beach, then Outcast Bar and Grill in Santa Rosa Beach. Now for your consideration comes the latest iteration of the Outcast Restaurant Group, Outcast Sushi. Located at 10859 U.S. Hwy. 98W, Suite 404 in Miramar Beach (the former location of the recently relocated Outcast Seafood), Outcast Sushi is open for lunch and dinner, closed Mondays, promising to serve up some of the freshest fish on the Emerald Coast.
Here you’ll find classics like gyoza and edamame – the latter comes in “sweet, salted, or hotter than hell flavors” – assorted rice bowls, and bento boxes. From the specialty rolls menu, try the Outcast Roll (Alaskan snow crab, shrimp tempura and jalapeño), the Black Dragon (crab salad, shrimp tempura, eel and avocado) or the literally flaming Volcano Roll (smoked salmon, avocado and cream cheese, deep fried). A selection of nigiri and sashimi is also available, as well as mochi and green tea ice cream for dessert. Explore the menu and more at www.outcastsushi.com.
M&P by Farrington Foods – a play on the phrase “Meat & Potatoes – is an American Omakase restaurant offering chef-determined multi-course meals at its Blue Mountain Beach venue, 3375 W. Co. Hwy. 30A.
The menu at M&P changes based on seasonality and availability, and gives chef/owner William Farrington a chance to display his culinary technique preparing sophisticated American food. Chef walks diners through contemporary cuisine and how he elevates traditional fare into something new and creative.
Seatings are offered at 7 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday. Reserve a table and learn more about this unique dining experience at farringtonfoods.com.
Zen Japanese Grill & Sushi Bistro is a Japanese restaurant with one simple goal: to create great sushi everyone enjoys.
Find a selection of salads and poke bowls, sashimi and all your favorite sushi rolls. Or step into the exotic with the signature rolls menu, like the Angel’s Kiss Roll (soft-shell crab, snow crab and spicy tuna with pickled red onions), the Crazy Burrito Roll (salmon, tempura shrimp, snow crab and furikake rolled in soy paper), or the Filet Mignon Roll (steak, crabstick and creamy garlic sauce). Small plate offerings include crispy tofu, spring rolls and shrimp tempura, or go big with noodles, fried rice dishes, or hibachi entrees. There are even fun fusion dessert options, like the PB&J Roll, tempura cheesecake and tempura ice cream.
Open for lunch and dinner daily, find your Zen at 11394 US Hwy. 98 in Miramar Beach, and online at www.zenjapanesecuisine.com.
Those in the mood for French cuisine – something not super well-represented in our area – might check out Renaissance French Restaurant at Gulf Place, 118 Spires Lane, Unit 2A.
The interior is quite a sight to behold, featuring green velvet booths, herringbone floors, white wall panel moldings, gold mirrors and marble bistro tables, it bills itself
as being “bistro chic” and stands in stark contrast to the more “beachy” establishments nearby.
On the menu you’ll find French classics including foie gras, steak tartare, caviar and – of course – escargots. For entrees, consider the beef bourguignon, duck confit or the salmon and asparagus, all with a decidedly French preparation. As you would expect, the wine menu is solid, and a selection of European beers is also available.
Book your table online at www.renaissancefrench.com for dinner Tuesday to Saturday; seating begins at 4:30 p.m.
Jimmy Buffett fever hit Sandestin last year with the opening of LandShark Bar & Grill in the Village of Baytowne Wharf, and now sister restaurant 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill has joined the party a few doors down! Located at 11 Cannery Lane in Miramar Beach, this eatery is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, and until midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays, and a full calendar of live entertainment each week.
This place offers indoor and outdoor dining space, as well as seats around the sizable 5 o’Clock Bar, and can even accommodate large groups and events with advanced notice.
To eat, you’ll find classic island fare like peel and eat shrimp, crab claws, wings, fish tacos, lobster rolls and burgers. Fried seafood baskets, salads and key lime pie are also plentiful, as are the drinks: cocktails, beers, wines and, naturally, Margaritas aplenty. SANDESTIN – For more than 25 years, Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood has set the gold standard for an exceptional dining experience. Ensuring an extraordinary dining experience is a daily commitment that begins the moment guests enter our doors.
Sanjeev Manchanda, Seagar’s general manager, said that commitment is evident in the reviews they receive.
“Feedback often highlights the predictably impressive culinary offerings and the personalized service provided by our team each night, while weaving in new seasonal options to enjoy,” Manchanda said. “It makes all the difference.”
The entire Seagar’s team works in unison to provide personal service and attention to detail as guests enjoy the elegant atmosphere and one-of-a-kind menu crafted under the direction of concert-pianist-turned-chef Fleetwood Covington III. His unique background has prepared him well for his position as executive chef.
“Having lived primarily in the south of France, I had a unique opportunity to immerse myself in a distinct lifestyle, participate in the culinary elite, and observe the practices of some of the world’s best restaurants,” Covington relayed. “It allowed me to draw from a rich tapestry
of culinary influences which now informs my approach in a coastal setting.”
He noted a couple of his culinary initiatives, so far.
“I identified key elements such as Japanese Wagyu and caviar that could elevate our menu. Emphasizing the importance of sourcing the finest ingredients – including local options when feasible – is a fundamental aspect of our culinary philosophy,” Covington said.
The chef was recently named the Honorary Chef for the 2024 Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation’s annual fundraising weekend.
“This is an important local event that our culinary has had the honor in participating in over the past few years and it is a testament to our partnership and Chef Fleetwood to be recognized as an honorary chef this time around,” explained Manchanda.
Located in the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort, Seagar’s is the only AAA Four Diamond steakhouse in the area and recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.
The restaurant is renowned for our top-tier steaks, but don’t overlook other options like seafood or the Red Stag Venison – a pan-roasted filet with black currant demi-glace.

SANTA ROSA BEACH – Mississippi native Brannon Janca camped on the coast’s barrier Islands throughout his childhood, where he learned to fish, smoke, and cook over an open fire. These early influences stayed with him as he learned classic French techniques at the Culinary Institute of New Orleans and while working with his partner Jim Richard at The Lake Place, Stinky’s Fish Camp, and Trenasse.
After years working with Richard, Janca felt the push to follow his own dream. Moving up in management had taken him out of the kitchen; he wanted to return to what inspired him. His vision was not just about food; it was the Southern hospitality experience, and the location was important. The goal was for guests to feel they were coming into the Janca home.
That location was Dave’s Glas Haus, modeled after a Seaside beach home.
“For years he saw that building and loved it,” his wife Stefani Janca recalled.
But it was not for sale. Brannon introduced himself to the owner, Dave Hillgenberg, built a relationship, and learned glass blowing. In the end, Janca not only got the building, but a lifelong friend who helped with installation of the glass and mirrors in what would become his restaurant.
Thus, Down Island Gulf Seafood Restaurant became reality.
Illness cut Brannon’s life short in March of 2023, but his legacy continues. Down Island remains chef-owned and family-operated. The people you meet are all family. Stefani now co-owns with Brannon’s mother, and GM Lindsay Hedglin is Stefani’s sister.
Years ago, Brannon picked up now Executive Chef Taylor Tucker when he landed on 30A to join his uncle, Jim Richard. Tucker worked with Brannon there and Down Island ever since. The glassware and most of the dinnerware was hand-thrown, glazed, and fired by Chef Brannon, alongside barrier island driftwood and concert posters from his collection.
The food concept is a combination of the almost primitive cooking of Janca’s youth, seen in wood-fired dishes in an Italian brick pizza oven; and classic French techniques, seen in elevated regional seafood and stellar non-seafood dishes.
“A customer asked us how we got octopus so tender, and it’s just using the correct technique,” Stefani shared. Influences range from “Apalachicola to New Orleans, south through the Gulf Coast and on through Pensacola, which has a big Asian community,” so the menu may
include boudin dumplings and Korean fried broccoli alongside Buffalo crawfish and BBQ shrimp.
About 75% of the menu is set, with the produce swapping in seasonally. Every night there are multiple features: a fish special, a soup, and a steak. Sometimes there are different small plates. But there are four staples always available: fish, oyster, shrimp, and crab.
Justin Wilson, the opening bar manager, and former bartender-turned-GM Hedglin built the opening cocktail menu to complement those four staples. Tom Richardson created the wine program alongside.
“WHILE DIETARY NEEDS ARE BECOMING MORE ACKNOWLEDGED IN THE INDUSTRY, BRANNON WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO ACCEPT IT.”
– Stefani Janca co-owner
“They are all sommeliers and design drinks and pairings custom to the cuisine,” Janca said.
Everyone was part of bringing Brannon’s vision to life and now it’s moving forward. Stefani is a certified dietitian, passionate about food effects on our health. At first, Stefani substituted ingredients from a back-end ingredients cache on a case-by-case need. They are now developing specific guest-facing menus for special diets: Celiac, gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian. This enables customers to peruse options at leisure.
“While dietary needs are becoming more acknowledged in the industry,” Stefani said, “Brannon was the first person to accept it.”
Down Island is a love story of a man’s vision, a family, and friends united in that dream. The result is great food and authentic connections welcoming all in true Southern grace.
Down Island does not accept reservations and is first come, first serve only. It is located at 2780 US Hwy. 98 West in Santa Rosa Beach. Phone: 850-777-3385. Learn more at downislandsrb.com. Open daily for lunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Happy hour runs 3 to 5 p.m. Dinner is Sunday to Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m., Friday and Sat until 10. Sunday brunch is served 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ALYS BEACH – The world was newly awakening from the pandemic when husband and wife team Jeremy and Angela Walton opened The Citizen to Alys Beach in January of 2021. Jeremy’s degree in hospitality and long career in destination resorts as food and beverage program manager, coupled with his time as a consulting partner for James Beard Award-Winning Chef Chris Hastings, gave him a solid background and an incredible foundation on which to build a dream of restaurant ownership.
The Waltons had been living in Alys Beach since 2014 when The Citizen opened its doors, after the two had recognized a need in the local food scene for something unique. To that end, the Waltons envisioned a coastal-inspired restaurant offering an experience of the caliber usually found in larger cities. Together, Angela’s inherent design acumen and Jeremy’s industry experience became two pillars of The Citizen’s concept.
Named for the driving concept behind it, “A love for the community, commitment to finding purpose and an
aspiration to define what it means to be a ‘good citizen,’” as Walton said, the seaside tavern features coastal cuisine whose inspiration is drawn from around the world, giving it global flavor with a serious nod to Southern fare. Driven by locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, the food and beverage menus are indicative of a desire to provide the highest flavor, with quality that speaks to a dedication for excellence.
The Citizen was designed by local architecture and design firm Khoury-Vogt Architects – the Town Architects for Alys Beach – and uniquely features seating at an 18-seat bar, 12-seat raw bar, and a spacious 120-seat dining room and patio. Naturally, the restaurant follows Alys Beach’s cleanly minimalist aesthetic, with an interior influenced by Scandinavian modern design and a focus on simple and refined design elements: coffered ceilings, marble and gold accents, and a vibrant splash of royal blue gives a bold statement of color in an otherwise white space.
Continued on page
The Citizen continued from page 22
Led by the talents of Executive Chef Coleman Jernigan, the menu is an inspired array of dishes conceptualized by the mind and heart of someone who has spent his life in the kitchen. Raised by a mother who worked as a sous chef, Jernigan has always been driven by the creativity of cooking. Prior to joining the opening team at The Citizen in 2020, Jernigan honed his inherent skills and applied them to learning the intricacies of bread, pastry, fine dining, casual dining and wholesale production. His career took him through some of the most regarded restaurants in New Orleans before he moved to Pensacola and joined the team at both the Waltons’ ventures, The Citizen and Fonville Press.
Best sellers include the Calabrian shrimp with Calabrian chilies, crispy shallots, fresh herbs and freshly made focaccia as well as the whipped feta with grilled naan bread, herbed almonds, espelette and orange blossom honey. The charred avocado salad with red onion, garden greens, pepitas, cilantro and lime shrub is also incredibly popular, and the yellowfin tuna with charred sweet chili, mezcal, leche de tigre, red onion and scallion salad has become a favorite. These are but a few examples of the ways in which The Citizen’s menu distinguishes itself from the typical.
“WE WANTED TO ENSURE EVERYBODY WHO CAME THROUGH THE DOORS WAS CARED FOR AND VALUED, AND THEY FELT IT EVERY DAY.”
– Jeremy Walton
co-owner
The culture created by the Waltons is another point of distinction.
“When we sat down and really thought about opening a restaurant, we knew that, no matter what we did, culture would be the most important part,” said Jeremy. “We knew that people would be the priority, and we developed our ‘7 Cs’ comprised of seven separate values/ideals/behaviors –though two really stand out: caring and collaboration. If nothing else, we wanted to ensure everybody who came through the doors was cared for and valued, and they felt it every day.”
Food, community, caring and collaboration. All elements that make The Citizen a successful concept and one that embodies the spirit of its name.
The Citizen is located at 20 Mark Twain Lane #101, Alys Beach. Open Wednesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch; dinner Monday to Sunday, 5 to 10 p.m. Brunch hours are 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Reservations accepted. ALYS BEACH – While Fonville Press has been a treasured presence in Alys Beach since 2004, new ownership in 2022 brought with it a refreshed location, along with additions that expanded its offerings, its atmospheric appeal and its demographic. As they put their own stamp on the iconic café, husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Angela Walton has the goal of paying homage to the original concept –with a twist.
Re-imagined with an in-house market and bar, Fonville Press’s café environment now extends to include eye-opening morning brews as well as specialty beverages and a full bar, along with a selection of grab-and-go sundries and gourmet market essentials.
“Our intention remained the same as that of the original,” said Jeremy Walton. “We wanted to serve as a community gathering space to bring people together over tasty bites and shared memories. Fonville Press is really just beginning. It’s such a diverse concept that we knew from the start we would need to focus on the fundamentals of
being a cafe-market-bar-bakery-coffee shop that caters to breakfast, lunch and dinner.”
As Walton said, “Our first year of ownership was very much learning what the people wanted from Fonville.”
It was these findings that led to their focus on such changes as an expansion and enhancement of the outside patio to feature additional landscaping with more shade. They are also working on expanding their dinner experience to include full service at night. On the market side, the team at Fonville are working toward offering more take-home meal options and eventually adding delivery.
“We also want to do even more events and live entertainment to really make it a community gathering spot,” Walton noted.
Perfectly imagined to create an appealing atmosphere, Fonville Press boasts a casual, cool and coastal feel in its new location on the first floor of The Lucian, brought to life by the collaborative efforts of the Waltons and Anthony Vallee. Perfectly at home within the coastal community
of Alys Beach, dark green- and salmon-colored accents, natural wood elements and midcentury Malibu-inspired décor exude a casual-yet-glamorous feel that is balanced by the unexpected presence of whimsy. Look around and you’ll see tiki mugs adorning the open shelving, multi-colored tabletops that bring pops of visual interest and pink-tasseled umbrellas over the outdoor patio seating – all bits of quirkiness that are oddly suited to the space.
“WE WANTED TO SERVE AS A COMMUNITY GATHERING SPACE TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER OVER TASTY BITES AND SHARED MEMORIES.”
– Jeremy Walton co-owner
Fonville Press’s continuously evolving all-day menu offerings include café favorites such as coffees, teas and specialty drinks as well as rotating seasonal cocktails. Their inhouse pastry and bread program, spearheaded by Chef de Cuisine

ROSEMARY BEACH – While there are many restaurants on 30A that offer great food and service, few are fine dining. This makes sense in a beach setting; you’re on vacation, with or without kids, and probably spent all day at the beach. Do you really want to dress up and adhere to time restraints where you must arrive within 15 minutes of arrival time, or it’s gone?
No need to worry here. Paradis is four-star food with a coastal feel and local charm.
Restaurant Paradis is a small, fine dining restaurant, with a full-service lounge, in Rosemary Beach. Opened 15 years ago, Danny and Monica Cosenzi bought the restaurant and moved to Northwest Florida. Both brought extensive restaurant experience. But perhaps what is most important is that they are continuing the Restaurant Paradis superior food and commitment to the community.
This is seen with the retention of many original Restaurant Paradis staff that are still here to this day, including the “Same Chef Mark Eichin, same GM Mike Wood, same MVP Donnie Sellers, since the restaurant opened 15 years ago,” Danny Cosenzi said.
Unlike many fine dining establishments, Restaurant Paradis operates on beach time and beach atmosphere, with a neighborhood feel that locals call home. Whether you’re in flip flops and shorts or dressed for a night out, the staff
will welcome you and provide the same stellar service and food featuring the coast’s rich flavors and local produce, along with prime steaks and fine wine. The official attire is smart and beach casual.
However, you will need a reservation. This isn’t to make things difficult but to ensure their standards are met.
“Reservations are required due to the size of the restaurant,” Cosenzi explained. “We could not deliver the food and service experience we do serving 400 people. We do 170 and try to deliver a night you will remember.”
While the atmosphere and attitude are casual, the food is not. Paradis pulls from the Gulf waters for fresh seafood and shrimp. The menu changes with the seasons to source locally grown products. Sustainability is also a priority. In addition to sourcing local produce and proteins, the crucial resource of clean water is addressed directly. Water is distilled to 0.5 microns, allowing trace minerals to remain, and converted to sparkling on site.
“We distill our water through a 3-filter system that produces the best you could ever imagine,” Cosenzi described. The water is served in their signature blue, reusable glass bottles, preventing thousands of bottles a year from going to landfills. All their carry-out containers are compostable.
For 30A residents, Restaurant Paradis is not just a great dining experience, it is as involved in the community as it

is with its menu. The annual Prohibition Repeal dinner brings both attention and money to much needed causes.
“Prohibition has always been very important to my Monica and me,” Cosenzi said. “It’s been a great venue to give back to our small community and to others doing things we could never do. There has been a wide range of causes through our time.” For the Dec. 9, 2024, event, Neurodiversity Resource of the Panhandle is the recipient. Paradis offers three atmospheres: a warm, country elegant dining room; patio dining with gas lanterns and brick flooring; and a relaxing lounge. It is fine dining food and service with a welcoming attitude. Paradis is located at 82 S. Barrett Square in Rosemary Beach. They are reservations-only, 850-534-0400 or via email at their website, restaurantparadis.com. Open daily at 5 p.m. To-go orders may be placed between 5 and 6 p.m. only. Dining is open Monday to Saturday till 9:30 p.m., Sunday till 9. The lounge is open until midnight.

DESTIN – Embark on an exciting culinary journey, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the majestic Gulf Coast – and you don’t even have to remember to pack your toothbrush!
Henderson Beach Resort launched its 2024 Dinner Series this spring, offering cuisine from all across the country. Each dinner is a separate ticketed event, set in a different space on the resort, featuring an array of eats, drinks and entertainment, according to Amanda Lewis, who handles PR for the resort.
“The series highlights all the resort’s venues, so join us each month for a new locale and dinner with a view, at varying price points,” Lewis explained. “It’s not just for wine/pairing connoisseurs, but also for anyone that enjoys food and deems themselves a foodie at heart.”
Inspiration for the lineup is a collaborative effort.
“The dinner series was the combined vision of Director of Food and Beverage Chris Matthews and Executive Chef Tyler Simmons’s ideas,” Lewis said. “This is a way to present
a variety of unique themes that highlight the capabilities of the resort as a foodie destination for locals and visitors.”
While the Napa Wine Train event has already taken place, fun-loving foodies can still enjoy a quartet of upcoming dining opportunities.
Sample a taste of Louisiana with the Friday, Aug. 16 Low Country Boil. Held on the Henderson’s Sunset Terrace, guests will dine on a traditional low country boil while watching the sunset amid live entertainment. Tickets are $89 per person.
Later in the fall, be mesmerized by the Bubbles, Truffles and Stars dinner on Friday, Oct. 18. Located on the newly renovated rooftop, indulge in high-end delights such as foie gras and caviar and – of course – some Dom Perignon. Stargaze through telescopes as you enjoy a perfect beach front evening; tickets are $195 a head.
To round out the series, the Henderson draws inspiration from the changing season with its Aprés Ski night,

Thursday, Dec. 5. Held at Horizons, which will be themed as a ski chalet, diners will be warmed with hearty fare like bison, buffalo, fondue and s’mores. The Horizons dining room features sweeping panoramas of the Gulf Coast and Henderson Beach State Park and an octagon-shaped bar.
“IT’S NOT JUST FOR WINE/PAIRING CONNOISSEURS, BUT ALSO FOR ANYONE THAT ENJOYS FOOD AND DEEMS THEMSELVES A FOODIE AT HEART.”

A Latin American Fusion Dinner was rescheduled from the spring; details are expected to be released soon. For more information on this and the other dinners, as well as the specific menus for all four events, Lewis invited guests to follow Henderson Beach Resort on social media.
These unique dining experiences are geared more toward an adult crowd, as the menu is preset and there isn’t a kid-specific menu. Lewis said the dress code is “dressy casual.”
“For women we’d suggest a dress, skirt and dressy top, dressy pants outfit, or nice jeans and dressy top. Men would be comfortable in a seasonal sport coat/blazer and slacks; dress shirt, casual button-down, open collar or polo shirt, tie optional,” she added.
Henderson Beach Resort is located at 200 Henderson Resort Way, Destin. Dinner series tickets can be purchased online at www.hendersonbeachresort.com or by visiting the resort’s front desk.

SANTA ROSA BEACH – Thanks to a perfect blend of great food and drink, along with its own private beach overlooking Choctawhatchee Bay, it’s easy to see why North Beach Social is such a popular spot for dining. There is something here for everyone.
“Whether you’re coming with you and some girlfriends and want to sit at the bar, have a good time and look out over the sunset, or you’re here with your family, we have an experience for everyone,” said Madison Shirley, vice president of Jim Shirley Enterprises. “We’ve got 700-plus seats on the beach itself, so you can dine out and let your kids play, with relative safety, of course.”(Guests are always warned to be careful, as there’s no lifeguard on the premises.)
People often get to the restaurant via the water itself, coming by paddle board or boat. And while access to the beach and the view of the beautiful bay are big draws, people tend to love the food, as well.
“Our menu is a little bit of a hybrid of beach bar meets higher quality food,” noted Shirley. “You’re going to get your tacos, your fish sandwich, and your fried shrimp, but
we have some really awesome seasonal items we’re seeing people order more and more often.”
One of those recently added items is the Popper Burger.
“It’s got a fried jalapeño popper on top of it that just gushes delicious cheese all over the place,” Shirley said. “It’s decadent and delicious, and everything you want if you like a good burger.”
The NB Social Burger is also a longtime favorite. And all burgers and sandwiches come with French fries.
“
WE’VE GOT 700PLUS SEATS ON THE BEACH ITSELF, SO YOU CAN DINE OUT AND LET YOUR KIDS PLAY.”
There are plenty of healthy options, too, like the recently added zucchini pasta dish. It’s a terrific stand-alone dish, but you can also add to it, if you like.
– Madison Shirley VP, Jim Shirley Enterprises

North Beach Social continued from page 34
“We can add proteins whether it’s grouper, snapper, chicken or beef,” Shirley said. “We can mix and match it however you like.”
The bar on the beach offers a wide variety of cocktails, it might be difficult to choose. Shirley has one she likes to recommend, especially during the summer months.
“We have a fantastic Grey Goose Lemonade that has fresh juice and is just delightful, really refreshing. And it’s not overly sweet, which for me is a big thing.”
The outside venue makes North Beach Social a perfect spot for live music, which it offers six days a week. It’s also a great spot, given so much outside space, for anyone planning a party or gathering.
“Whether you’re throwing a birthday party, a graduation party, or any type of celebration, we’re glad to help. Just send us an email and we’ll go from there.”
The restaurant definitely lives up to the “social” in its name. And if the sun or sand ever gets to be a bit too much, there’s a sister restaurant right upstairs called Farm & Fire.
“It’s a different experience with craft cocktails, sushi, pizza, and a variety of options,” Shirley said. “It’s a different experience, but also very good.”
North Beach Social is located at 24200 US-31 in Santa Rosa Beach. The phone number is 850-622-8110. The hours are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. No reservations needed. Visit their website at www.northbeach.social.

In marketing, names are everything, and for the owners of the Outcast brand of restaurants, the aha moment came one day when the two men were FaceTiming each other. At a time when they were near to being locked into a name for their first restaurant, Alan and Justin were at a loss for something they considered perfect – until, that is, Justin caught sight of the shirt that Alan was wearing during their call. “It was a faded old motorcycle shirt, and you could barely make out the word ‘Outcast’ on it,” Justin recalled. “I chuckled and pointed it out, saying, ‘Outcast, kinda like we are.’”
And so, Outcast Seafood was given its name, one that has spawned two other restaurants also owned by the business partners. Opened on Jan. 1 of 2022, Outcast Seafood was followed by Outcast Bar & Grill in March of 2023, with Outcast Sushi quick on its heels with an April 2024 opening. And while the trio of establishments may all have their own flavor, all have one common thread.
“We are Outcasts through and through,” said Justin, who
has been in restaurants since the age of 14, while Alan comes from a 30-year business background at a Fortune 100 company. “In each of our restaurants, we want to consistently deliver on great food, vibes and high-energy, friendly service. These things have been suffering in the service industry for a long time, and we strive to bring back the glory days of affordable, delicious food with outstanding service.”
“We make everything from scratch, yet try to keep prices as reasonable as possible for all of our guests,” Justin said of all three of their restaurants. “We also never want to come across as too stuffy or like a tourist trap. Alan and I live here and love the Emerald Coast, so we want our neighbors, friends and tourists to all get the same experience at fair prices – all while jamming out to ’90s rock and getting to know all of our very own motley crew.

Geared towards fresh seafood that is as unpretentious as one would hope from the decidedly tattoo-style logo of the brand, Outcast Seafood’s biggest player on the menu is The Big O, aptly named for its large portions: two pounds of head-on shrimp and two snow crab clusters, two corn cobs, two new potatoes and andouille sausage, all boiled together and finished in their signature Outcast sauce.
“WE MAKE EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH, YET TRY TO KEEP PRICES AS REASONABLE AS POSSIBLE FOR ALL OF OUR GUESTS.”

Outcast Seafood is located at 10859 Emerald Coast Parkway, Suite 203/204, Miramar Beach. No reservations. Open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, call 850-719-4212 or visit outcastseafood.com.
Outcast Bar & Grill, meanwhile, offers more of the bar feel and pub food you’d expect, and Justin and Alan are nothing if not transparent in exactly what they offer. Topping the favorites list here are, of course, the beer and the fantastic mixed drinks, but also the wings, which are brined overnight and then flash-fried to order, and their creatively titled Little Sin Burger. Comprising a half-pound beef patty topped with house-made barbecue sauce, “Outcast Candy,” bacon, mayo and cheddar cheese, it’s dripping with flavor and hits all the notes of indulgence. Both the bar and grill and seafood restaurants are under the watchful eye of Chef Dave, the overall executive chef of the brand, whose 35-plus years of culinary shows in the menus.
Outcast Bar & Grill is at 4942 Highway 98, Santa Rosa Beach. No reservations. Open Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. For more information, call 850641-7630 or visit outcastbarandgrill.com.
Newest to the team, Outcast Sushi boasts imaginative rolls, sashimi and nigiri. Their signature is the Outcast Roll, made with Alaskan snow crab. Under the guidance of Executive Sushi Chef Carlo Go, who boasts over 15 years’ experience and directly trained under a Michelin Star chef in Asia, Outcast Sushi is destined to become a local favorite. Outcast Sushi is located at 10859 Emerald Coast Parkway, Suite 404, Miramar Beach. No reservations. WATERCOLOR – Picture it: a warm October afternoon spent strolling under the shade trees in idyllic Cerulean Park, sipping wine while nibbling on some of the finest food the Emerald Coast has to offer. This scene is reality during the Grand Tasting of the Harvest Wine & Food Festival, held each year by the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation.
The festival is actually a four-day affair, back Oct. 17 to 20, 2024, for its eighth year, and DCWAF Director of Marketing & Communications Kate MacMillan said planning is already well underway.
“In addition to our flagship Grand Tasting, two of last year’s most popular events were Friday’s Harvest After Dark and our festival finale, the cocktail brunch, hosted on Sunday morning. Both will be returning this year along with our line-up of intimate wine dinners to kick off the weekend.”
Those Thursday evening wine dinners are held in various locations, each featuring a specific winemaker and private chef or restaurant.
New this year will be a Parisian lunch, to be held Friday afternoon and hosted in a private WaterColor home.
Friday evening’s Harvest After Dark brings wine and food enthusiasts together under a large tent to enjoy an upscale, intimate evening of “elevated wines, unlikely pairings and culinary delights crafted by talented celebrity chefs from across the Southeast.”
Saturday’s Grand Tasting is the aforementioned 3-hour extravaganza in WaterColor’s Cerulean Park, offering guests unlimited opportunities to sample wines from around the world, as well as regional food.
A VIP experience is also available, giving the lucky ticketholders exclusive access to the VIP tent, featuring impressive wine, beer and culinary options amid an elegant lounge area.
Event organizers already have a few special guests slated for this year’s fete, and will announce all the headliners by early July before ticket sales open.
“We’re excited to welcome Lang & Reed, William Cole, Gamba, Phifer Pavitt and Mending Wall to the event this year,” MacMillan said, also hinting that those interested in attending any of the events should consider purchasing tickets early, as they have sold out in advance the last several years.
A virtual auction is also held during the weekend, giving those unable to attend the festivities another avenue to support the DCWAF’s work, as all this merriment is indeed for a good cause.
“DCWAF’s mission is to connect wine enthusiasts to help children in need in Northwest Florida,” MacMillan explained. “We do this by hosting world-class wine and culinary events throughout the year, to include Harvest Wine & Food Festival and our signature Destin Charity Wine Auction, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this April.
“We currently support 17 local charities, all providing critical services to children in our area. Since our inception, DCWAF has donated more than $35 million.”

M&P by Farrington Foods • By Liesel Schmidt
SANTA ROSA BEACH – When you navigate your way to the website for M&P by Farrington Foods, there is no menu page on the menu, no listing of their signature dishes or tempting descriptions of the plates that have been designed over the course of many brainstorming sessions between chef and owner. There is only a stark, black and white canvas posted with photos and an explanation of what the restaurant’s concept is – and who it is behind the curtain.
Opened at the start of 2024, M&P was the creative vision of chef and owner William Farrington, whose own journey to chef-dom is quite an interesting tale. It begins in Chef Will’s own personal kitchen, where he would often break down whole pigs “for fun,” experimenting with new flavors and techniques to perfect the end result. After deciding to pursue his dream of becoming a professional chef, he left his career behind, sold everything and moved across the country. Like so many chefs, he started his professional kitchen career washing dishes for a meager, hourly wage, simply to learn.
He eventually went on to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, working his way through some of the most renowned kitchens with the single focus of learning as much as he could, quickly. Now the master of his own kitchen, Chef Will is a solo act whose talents are on display in every meal he creates.
“He’s been called the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ in the kitchen by his peers,” said Elizabeth Case, Chef Will’s wife, marketing manager and the interior designer for M&P by Farrington Foods.
Versatility is clearly an asset he possesses, as evidenced by his
being named Best Chef of the Emerald Coast in 2022, as well as his ability to play all the roles to be found within the kitchen while he constructs every plate for his guests. And, unlike most of the restaurants in the area, M&P has the distinction of being based on the Japanese concept of omakase, which literally translates to, “‘I’ll leave it up to you.” For a creative like Chef Will, being given so much freedom is a dream come true –especially in the context of American cuisine.
“An American omakase is unique in and of itself since omakase is a Japanese concept. But on 30A, there are very few restaurants that offer a chef’s tasting menu personally curated by the owner of the restaurant, celebrating American fare and the history of our country’s food culture,” said Case. “Chef Will comes out, greets the dining room and explains every dish, which is also quite special.
M&P is a small, immersive dining experience designed to bring people together over their love of food. Dinner service will include a multicourse tasting menu of small plates featuring American dishes. An all-American wine pairing can be added, with wine and beer also available a la carte.
“Generally, this concept is showcased in sushi restaurants, and we thought it would be interesting to do it with an all-American fare,” Case continued. “Omakase gives the chef the freedom and control to create incredible meals featuring seasonal ingredients, highlighting special farming or cooking techniques, and providing an element of surprise and adventure for the diner.”
“OMAKASE
GIVES THE CHEF THE FREEDOM AND CONTROL TO CREATE INCREDIBLE MEALS FEATURING SEASONAL INGREDIENTS, HIGHLIGHTING SPECIAL FARMING OR COOKING TECHNIQUES.”
– Elizabeth Case marketing manager
Naturally, there is a story behind the name.
“M&P is tongue-in-cheek for meat and potatoes – which is what so much of the world thinks American food is – but to us, it’s so much more,” Case explained. “The name is also a play on the old B&O train line, which was the first steam-operated railway in the United States to be chartered as a common carrier of freight and passengers in 1827.”
Playing up the latter reference, the dining room was designed to look like a Pullman dining car, offering an experience loosely evocative of a cross-country train trip highlighting the various terrain, lakes, rivers and oceans in the different regions of the U.S. Furthering the unique ambiance is soft lighting and American movie theme music playing in the background. Guests are greeted with a complimentary glass of bubbly and toasted sunchokes. M&P by Farrington Foods is located at 3375 West Co. Highway 30A, Santa Rosa Beach. Reservations required. A single nightly seating is offered at 7 p.m., Wednesday to Saturday. For more information, call 850-739-2950 or visit farringtonfoods. com/m&p30a.

ALYS BEACH – A festival born from a chic beer event has grown into a five-day celebration of craftsmanship, telling the stories of food, beverages, artistry and workmanship.
Back for its third year, Diana Lane, director of public relations for Alys Beach, said the 2024 Alys Beach Crafted will have a few new things to look forward to in the week’s action-packed lineup.
“The Makers Market will have a ‘Holiday’ theme,” Lane explained. “We will also hold a (private) Sunday ‘Pickle Ball & Pickle Backs event.”
In years past, guests have enjoyed an October timeline, but this time festival organizers are moving things back a few weeks.
“October has become a very busy month for our area and, as Crafted celebrates a spirit of collaboration that’s especially notable in our local events community (who all work together beautifully and support each other’s efforts), we wanted to spread things out a bit for the community as a whole – participants and guests,” Lane said.
And so the party kicks off Wednesday, Nov. 13 with the Emerald Coast Storytellers event. Held around the Pedestrian Path Firepit, the evening features performances
the Santa Rosa Beach-based creative writers group. Celebrate the craft of written and spoken word. This casual 21-and-up event features drinks and light bites.
Moving on to Thursday night, a lineup of cocktail dinners will delight. Themes have not yet been released, but last year included features on agave, wine and mixology.
On Friday, ticket-holders turn their attention to the afternoon’s Spirited Seminars, as well as the event that inspired it all, the Firkin Fete beer fest. Held under the glow of lights, Alys’ Beach’s Central Park is filled with regional vendors, tapping their finest brewed selections. Guests are issued a commemorative stein and turned loose to sample anything that catches their fancy, along with premium bites from local restaurateurs. Fear not, a selection of wine and spirits are also made available, and a live band keeps the mood, well, festive!
The 2023 installment included the likes of Idyll Hounds Brewing Company, Birmingham’s Ghost Train Brewing Co., Grayton Beer Company, Odd Pelican Beer Co., as well as Palm Folly Hard Seltzer for something a little different.
The Holiday Makers Market will hit the Alys Beach Amphitheatre Saturday and Sunday, while the enchantingly elegant Spirited Soirée is the festival’s proverbial cherry on top!
Stroll the North Pedestrian Path, soaking up the fall sunshine while sipping on a vast selection of handmade cocktails, mixed right in front of you. Mixologists from near and far will bring their best recipes, happy to discuss ingredients, inspiration and technique. Enjoy food from local restaurants, as well as live music along the path.
For those who have never made it to Crafted, all the events can’t help but be inspired by the ethereal beauty of the venue itself. It is a place to see and be seen, for sure!
“Dress for the events is really a resort or beach chic –hats are a big accessory, avoid heels for walking on cobblestones and green spaces; flowy dresses or sets, linens, tropical attire,” Lane suggested.
Of course there is the matter of getting to-and-from events, and festival organizers have a handle on that as well.
“Parking is available for guests in the Town Center around the amphitheater, along the slip roads that run parallel to 30A, north and south; and in the parking lot behind George’s. Parking courts and other marked parking spots are allocated to vacation rental guests and homeowners, so it’s recommended that guests carefully mind the signage,” Lane reminded. “Also, Alys Beach does not allow low speed vehicles.”
Proceeds from the 2024 festival will benefit the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, which aims to foster creativity through the inclusive and collaborative advancement of the Arts.

SANDESTIN – While the incredible sunset views offered from their second-floor balcony may not have changed in the past 23 years, The Crazy Lobster only bears a passing resemblance to the restaurant that was originally launched as Poppy’s Seafood Factory in 2001. After 10 years under that name, the owners rebranded as Poppy’s Crazy Lobster, specializing in whole lobster and steamer buckets and offering a fun, family atmosphere.
In 2022, the new face of The Crazy Lobster emerged, updating the concept of basing the menu around whole lobster, to appeal to a more contemporary, younger crowd of guests. The result was still all lobster-based, but in fun and creative re-imagined dishes. In addition, they upgraded their bar program to feature hand-crafted cocktails, premium well brands, and an extensive wine program. To fit the new vibe, the restaurant also underwent a major renovation, giving it a more light and airy, more coastal feel.
“We wanted our restaurant’s interior and our food to be more aligned with today’s local foodies,” explained Lindsey Spalding, who co-owns The Crazy Lobster with her husband, Mark.
The Spaldings have a long history with the restaurant. In fact, Mark was the general manager and sommelier for the original Poppy’s Seafood Factory and was part of the opening team. He later took a leave of absence to devote more time to his family, and eventually, the couple entered into a partnership with the original owner, AJ “Poppy” Tusa, and took over the restaurant.
Recently promoted to executive chef, Jamaican-born Chef Tajay Riley has been with the restaurant for many years and brings to bear his passion for cooking and using fresh Gulf seafood, along with locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes seasonally, and daily specials highlight their unique offerings.
To set them apart from other restaurants of the same ilk, being “unique” is, in fact, one of the driving forces of their menu. Still offering such perennial favorites as simple-yet-deliciously steamed and fried seafood in all its variations, The Crazy Lobster lives up to the “crazy” in their moniker with such dishes as the Lobster Brie Melt,
The Crazy Lobster continued from page 52
Lobster and Waffles, Lobster Fire Tacos and Lobster Ravioli – all of which seem to play nicely in the sandbox along with other bestsellers and signature items including the Surf and Turf, Seared Sea Scallops on a Goat Cheese Grit Cake with Poblano Butter, Steamed Seafood Platters, Shrimp & Grits, Snapper Pontchartrain and Blackened Redfish.
“WE HAVE NEWLY RENOVATED BARS, BALCONY SEATING UPSTAIRS WHERE THEY CAN WATCH BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS OVER THE BAY, AND A FRIENDLY, SMILING STAFF.”
– Lindsey Spalding co-owner
In addition to the uniqueness of their menu, The Crazy Lobster is the only restaurant in the Village of Baytowne offering “white tablecloth casual fine dining service, where you can have a great meal while wearing your casual beachy attire,” said Lindsey.
“When people come here, they enjoy the light, lively, coastal vibe that we’ve created. We have newly renovated bars upstairs and downstairs, balcony seating upstairs where they can watch beautiful sunsets over the bay, and a friendly, smiling staff that will make their dining experience even more unforgettable.”
Adding to their appeal is an award-winning wine list.
“We offer generous wine pours and Mark brings his expertise and passion as one of the most knowledgeable wine sommeliers on the coast to the team,” Lindsey added. “That’s something our guests really enjoy.”

AQ: Care to share your family’s stats?
A: I have the most amazing family, and I opened Fine Coastal Cuisine so that I could spend more time with my beautiful wife, Jennifer, and my two brilliant sons, Cole and Carter. Out of all of us, I am the only one not a Florida native, but I am working on it.
Q: How long have you lived along the Emerald Coast?
A: Florida is the sort of place where everyone wants to live. In total, I have lived in Florida for a little over 20 years, and we have been here for just over 12. Even if you move away temporarily as we have, you will return because there is no place like the Emerald Coast.
Q: Tell us about your culinary education.
A: Like most chefs, I fell in love with cooking from a very young age, cooking at home with family. I believe in exposing the culinary arts to high school students, and was fortunate to have decided to take those classes my school offered. We are lucky to have many great culinary programs in the schools along the Emerald Coast. Our oldest son is in his second year, and loves it, just like I did. I received my formal education at the Baltimore Internation-
al College and trained under six Certified Master Chefs. Currently, there are only about 60 in the U.S.
Q: Where have you worked prior to Fine Coastal Cuisine?
A: I worked for the Hilton Sandestin as the chef of Seagar’s and then as the executive chef of the hotel. Having lived in the area and beginning cooking here in the late ‘90s, I moved back to Maryland to attend culinary school and a four-year apprenticeship. Before returning to the Emerald Coast, I worked for the two Ritz Carlton properties of Naples, Fla. Working my way up to the level of executive sous chef, I was also fortunate to travel internationally for the hotel and company. My incredibly supportive wife and I took a couple years’ break to move to Martha’s Vineyard to open The Boathouse Yacht and Tennis Club before returning to the Ritz Carlton at the executive level. We then decided to move back to the greatest place in Florida to raise our family.
Q: Do you have any help, or are you a one-man operation?
A: On the occasions where I am cooking for a larger event, like a wine dinner or charity event, then I feel blessed that my beautiful wife, Jennifer, joins me. I enjoy focusing on groups under 25 because it allows me to create a personable experience without any assistance.
Q: What does your typical day look like?
A: After my wife and sons leave for school, I start working. Owning a small business means there is always something to do, and I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I answer emails, prepare and type up menus, shop for the evening’s booking, and I try to keep up with social media posts and any publications for the business. Then, I normally get dinner ready for Jennifer and the boys and hang out with them for a bit when they get home from school before heading out to that evening’s dinner.
Q: What is the most interesting dish you’ve made for a private client?
A: I feel lucky because being a personal chef means there are so many opportunities to share my passion and knowledge. One of my favorite services is the “Themed Cooking Demo.” They are hands-on events and I love teaching everything from hand-made pastas and gnocchi, shaping different styles of Asian dumplings, beef Wellingtons, spanakopitas, to a variety of decadent desserts. The demos can be as hands-on and detailed as the guests want. Then, the guests get to sit back while I finish preparing, and enjoy a multi-course meal featuring the items they just learned to make. It is always a huge hit.
Q: Your motto is “Subtly Elegant Southern Hospitality.” What does that mean to you?
A: To me, the best dining experience is built around the finest ingredients, skillfully prepared and simply yet
elegantly presented. I combine the finest local ingredients with my genuine enjoyment of providing a warm and welcoming hospitality to all of my guests on the Emerald Coast, creating Subtly Elegant Southern Hospitality.
Q: At home, do you go gourmet or keep things simple?
A: I can’t express how much joy I get from feeding my family. I love cooking for them and with them. My family taste-tests everything that I make. Every season of the year means a new wave of menu selections, and my wife and sons are my taste-testers and gourmet food critics. After 25 years together, my wife Jennifer has picked up a lot and is a very talented cook herself, and our sons love baking and cooking.
Some days we have simplistic meals like a taco bar or Asian buffet, and other days are more elevated like a multi-course meal.
Q: What do you enjoy doing for hobbies outside of work?
A: I love spending time with my family. Living on the Emerald Coast means we get to spend a lot of time in and on the water, and I love taking my sons fishing and kayaking. I also love surfing and making surfboards. Shaping and building surfboards is a really fun hobby and creative outlet for me.

SANDESTIN – Open since February of 2021, Hotel Effie has become a premier destination on the Emerald Coast for tourists and locals alike. In addition to 250 guest rooms, a spa, and banquet and meeting spaces, the hotel offers several culinary options – all open to the public!
Hotel Effie’s food and beverage program recently welcomed a new executive chef with the addition of Juan Bochenski, according to hotel GM John Jenkins.
“Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bochenski has had an impressive career, working at luxury resorts across the globe. The chef combines his extensive experience with a passion for teaching and sharing his culinary knowledge,” Jenkins said. “Since Chef Juan started, he has updated our brunch and dinner menu, with lunch menu changes coming soon. He has also implemented mouth-watering weekly dinner specials, in addition to previous weekly brunch specials.”
The flagship is their fine dining restaurant, Ovide, located on the ground floor. Open year-round for breakfast, lunch
and dinner seven days a week (brunch on the weekends), reservations can be made online for the bar area, dining room or the covered patio.
“With our new chef and menu items, you can expect the best in culinary dishes with inspiration from Mediterranean cuisine infused with Southern culinary traditions,” Jenkins pointed out. “Ovide is in the development phase of launching a Prix Fixe lunch menu that will undergo weekly changes. The approach involves incorporating seasonal influences into weekend specials and consistently evolving the à la carte menu.”
Voted Best Special Occasion and Most Romantic Restaurant on the Emerald Coast, Jenkins said the space offers a real “romantic ambiance” with its warm wood tones, artwork, and a stunning floral mural on the ceiling. The restaurant also offers special seasonal events, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners, a New Year’s Eve experience, and an Easter brunch.

Ride the elevator to the rooftop deck for some sunshine at Ara Rooftop Pool & Lounge, open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily., and order from the food and drink menu. The bar pours beer, wine and cocktails. Sip on the likes of the Missionary’s Downfall (Brugal 1888 rum, peach, pineapple, lemon and mint), the Blue Bayou (Grey Goose Vodka, Blue Curacao, Falernum, banana and pineapple) and frozen coladas and daiquiris.
Balance out the beverages with an assortment of finger food-friendly appetizers, salads (including some vegan and vegetarian options) and kids menu classics. Entree highlights include the Mega Toast (smoked salmon, Boursin cheese, heirloom tomato and lemon aioli) and the crab quesadilla, featuring queso fresco and cilantro aioli.
“Ara boasts panoramic views of both Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort and the Choctawhatchee Bay with views of the Gulf of Mexico on the horizon,” Jenkins relayed. “This is the best place in Miramar Beach to view fireworks and sunsets. With DJs on Fridays and Saturdays during peak season, it is the ultimate spot for vacation vibes.”
Diners not already staying at Hotel Effie can reserve a cabana to have access to the area’s only rooftop hotel pool for the day.
If your evening needs a little something, but you’re not wanting the full dining experience, The Lobby Bar (TLB) offers drinks and signature small plates from 4 to 9 p.m. daily (until 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday). With a nice selection of bottles – everything from sparkling to rosé to red; to craft and commercial beers; to half a dozen cocktails, there’s something to sip on as you enjoy an evening in the well-appointed Hotel Effie lobby.
The Lobby Bar offers validated valet parking with a purchase of $50 or more (this is the same for Ara and Ovide) and occasional live performances.
“TLB is a local favorite with talented live musicians Thursdays to Saturdays during peak season, often including Jared Herzog from Season 17 of The Voice – Team John Legend,” Jenkins said. “It’s been said that the craft cocktails at TLB are the best in the area.”
For a little nosh, TLB serves the likes of pimento cheese, half-shell oysters with mignonette and sourdough crackers, crispy pork ribs, and poached Gulf shrimp.
All three spaces are available for full or partial buyouts, should you be planning a larger gathering.
“Whether you’re planning an intimate 12-guest gathering or a grand social or corporate function, the Hotel Effie Special Events Team is here to assist,” Jenkins concluded.
Hotel Effie is located at 1 Grand Sandestin Boulevard, Miramar Beach, within the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. For more information, visit www.hoteleffie.com or call 833-873-3343.

Red Curry Mussels combine sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. Simmered in a rich and aromatic red curry sauce which offers a spicy, fragrant base for the mussels, and elevates the dish. The coconut milk provides a creamy, slightly sweet richness that balances the spices. Served with grilled ciabatta bread, offering a crusty texture and smoky flavor.

SEAGROVE BEACH – Ask many 30A visitors and you’ll find that “dinner at Café Thirty-A” is on their must-do list before they even leave home. This has been a constant since its opening in 1995 under local visionary restaurateur Harriet Crommelin. Her passing marked the end of an era in 30A dining. Her foresight and wisdom in passing Café Thirty-A on to two longtime employees, Jackie Maliszewski and David Kessler, ensures that her legacy of fine dining in a casual setting and the community spirit that signify Café Thirty-A continues.
When you hear the story, it all makes sense, as the relationship between owner and employees was more of family. Maliszewski worked for Crommelin for 20 years, and Kessler for 28.
“I moved from Georgia to find a summer job,” Maliszewski shared. “A friend that lived here suggested Café Thirty-A because I had fine dining experience. David was born and raised in Fort Walton Beach. He started as a server and quickly moved to management.”
Such longevity in a restaurant is rare, but few restaurants are like Café Thirty-A.
“Harriet always treated her employees like family,” Maliszewski said. “She didn’t have children of her own; we were her children. When I became her office manager 10 years ago, she became more than a mentor, she was like a second mom. David shared an office with Harriet and over 28 years their bond was strong. She trusted David and me to run things while she traveled, and we are beyond humbled that she trusted us to continue her legacy now that she is gone.”
Café Thirty-A is more than a dining establishment. The award-winning restaurant (the latest being named 2023’s Best Fine Dining in the Perfect in Walton County awards) is also a major part of the 30A community, hosting two of the area’s biggest charity events: Soiree on the Bay and the annual Christmas Charity Ball.
Maliszewski and Kessler promise to continue this spirit and what diners have grown to love over the last decades.
“Both locals and visitors love the ongoing experiences of our beloved community; the commitment to conservation of the white sand beaches and turquoise waters; the stunning architecture that heralded the New Urban movement; and our restaurants,” Maliszewski assured. “Nothing will change except for some touch-ups here and there. We have updated a few things, but we will continue Harriet’s legacy and keep the ‘casual fine dining’ that Café Thirty-A has been known for.”
“WE HAVE UPDATED A FEW THINGS, BUT WE WILL CONTINUE HARRIET’S LEGACY AND KEEP THE ‘CASUAL FINE DINING’ THAT CAFÉ THIRTY-A HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR.”
– Jackie Maliszewski, co-owner
From the menu, you’ll still find customer favorites and signature dishes, like the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, Lobster in Paradise, and Quail & Grits, just to name a few.
The café is dedicated to local and seasonal ingredients, which is so important when creating the best in fine dining.
“Our top vendors for protein are Ben E. Keith and Buckhead; Destin Ice for Seafood; JV Farms, and City Produce for produce. We usually change our menu a couple of times a week based on the fresh ingredients we can get and the local seafood. We will continue to carry on that concept. As Harriet would say, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’ Maliszewski promised.
Café Thirty-A is open daily for dinner starting at 4:30; reservations are required. Call 850-231-2166 or go to www.cafethirtya.com to reserve a table. The café is located at 3899 East Scenic Hwy. 30A, Seagrove Beach, about 1.5 miles east of Seaside and 6.5 miles west of Rosemary Beach.

MIRAMAR BEACH – Eggs on the Beach is one of those culinary events that makes living on or visiting the Emerald Coast even more magical. Held each fall, this grilling competition centers around The Big Green Egg outdoor grill and brings hundreds to Seascape Towne Center to partake in the grilling greatness. Cook teams put out their best bites, competing for top awards, all while raising money for two fantastic local causes. From savory to sweet, and even a little somethin’ to sip on, this festival has all the bases covered!
The Eggs on the Beach event is hosted by Bay Breeze Patio owners Susan Kiley and Wayne Paul, with event co-organizer Tracy Louthain, who gave us a sneak peek on what they’ve got cooking for the 2024 installment.
Q: What does the schedule of events look like this year?
A: The big news is our date change! The 2024 Eggs on the Beach will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 at Seascape Resort in Miramar Beach. The event is held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and we’re anticipating the comfortable November temperatures and spectacular cook teams will make this year’s event the best ever!
“WE’RE ANTICIPATING THE COMFORTABLE NOVEMBER TEMPS AND SPECTACULAR
COOK TEAMS WILL MAKE THIS YEAR’S EVENT THE BEST EVER!
”
Q: This is the 10th anniversary, are you planning anything special?
A: We are excited about the 10th anniversary celebration and this year we’ll be celebrating the best of years’ past while introducing some new surprises for 2024. We are inviting back all the winning cook teams for a return appearance, as well as our honorary judges. After having Chef Jude Tauzin of Tony Chachere’s as an honorary judge last year, we’re collaborating on some fun ideas that would involve cook teams infusing the delicious flavors of Tony Chachere’s seasonings. While we don’t have all details yet, we’re looking forward to an incredible reunion of world-class chefs and foodies.
– Tracy Louthain co-organizer
Q: Which fan favorite events will return for 2024?
A: A highlight of last year’s Eggs on the Beach was our partnership with Angel’s Envy. We’re looking forward to welcoming them back and having their Whiskey Guardians “wow” tasters with their knowledge while serving samples and hosting games and prizes. We’re hopeful they will also return with the custom engraving machine for those who want a personalized bottle to commemorate the event.
Q: Talk to us about ticketing.
A: We encourage tasters to purchase tickets in advance to take advantage of lower advance ticket pricing and avoid lines at the gate. For those who prefer to wait, tickets may be purchased at the gate at the “day of” price.
Q: For those who have never attended before, what do they need to know?
A: Eggs on the Beach is a gathering of foodies who are ready to enjoy some of the most creatively delicious bites cooked on a Big Green Egg. The Big Green Egg is an all-in-one smoker and grill that results in the most flavorful foods. Tasters come ready to sample bites and vote for their favorites. The casual outdoor garden party takes place rain or shine, and tasters enjoy live music, college football, and tasty samples of all kinds. Complimentary parking is available on-site at Seascape Resort.
Q: Update us on your two partner charities.
A: Eggs on the Beach benefits The Fisher House of the Emerald Coast, which provides a home away from home for military families during medical treatment, and Food for Thought, which aims to fight childhood hunger and food insecurity among students in Walton and Okaloosa counties. Since its inception in 2013, Eggs on the Beach has donated more than $295,000 to local nonprofits.
Q: What else?
A: We’re excited to be voted “Best in Destin” Event by the readers of VIP Destin Magazine! With so many amazing food and wine events in the area, we’re honored to be recognized as the best in Destin.
For more information on the Eggs on the Beach event, or to purchase tickets when they become available, visit www.eggsonthebeach.com.

SANTA ROSA BEACH – Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar in Santa Rosa Beach has been popular for its fresh caught seafood and waterfront views for the past seven years. Two years ago, owner Thomas Gallion opened a sister restaurant in Rosemary Beach that also features the freshest seafood available, but offers more of a fine dining experience. Both restaurants are award-winning but target a different clientele.
Gallion said Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar, which offers pristine views, focuses more on casual dining.
“It’s more of a beach restaurant or a beach bar, being right there on the beach. And we have a great relationship with Water Street Seafood in Apalachicola, so we bring in fresh oysters and fresh seafood every day.”
The menu lists oysters, appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and entrees like Blue Chair Bay Shrimp Tacos, Gulf Coast Seafood, NY Strip, and much more.
“We’ve definitely have the No. 1 grouper sandwich and we’ve won awards for our tuna dip every year,” Gallion pointed out.
A kids’ menu is available, and specialty desserts include Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, Key Lime Pie, and Beignet Fries (with powdered sugar and caramel).
After years of success with Shunk Gulley in Santa Rosa, Gallion decided to open a different type of restaurant in Rosemary Beach.
“I’m a builder and had built houses in Rosemary Beach and it’s one of my favorite neighborhoods,” he explained. “So, when the opportunity came up, we decided to open Gallion’s.”
Gallion’s serves a family-friendly lunch during the day, but at 3 p.m. switches to adults-only, 18 and older. In addition to exceptional food, it offers an extensive collection of wine, spirits and cocktails, as well.
Continued on page 68
Shunk/Gallion’s continued from page 66
“We wanted to do something a little more upscale,” Gallion said. “So, we have great relationships in the beverage industry and can bring in a lot of fine wines, bourbons, and whiskeys.”
Gallion’s has been recognized by Wine Spectator and voted a local Best Fine Dining hot spot both years it’s been in operation. When it comes to food, there are elevated small plates such as Shishito Peppers, Shrimp Scampi, French Deviled Eggs, and more, as well as chef-inspired entrees.
“We also have great steaks and great seafood,” Gallion said. “Our steaks are extremely popular. We have 90-day dry-aged bone-in rib-eye and bone-in filet. And our Parmesan crusted red snapper is a best-seller.
He says Gallion’s has two executive chefs, so there’s one at the restaurant seven days a week. They are part of a strong and dedicated staff he describes as “one big family.”
“We love our people,” he said.
The goal behind opening Shunk Gulley’s Oyster Bar, then Gallion’s, was to serve both the community he loves.
“I’m an extremely social person and I love getting to meet people coming to our area,” Gallion says. “My grandfather built a house in Seagrove Beach in 1951, so I’ve been coming to the beach my entire life. Then, 15 years ago, I was drawn to move down here and raise my family. I love this area and I love developing relationships that last a lifetime.”
Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar is located at 1875 S Highway 393, Santa Rosa Beach. The phone number is 850-6222733 and hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. No reservations needed. To learn more visit www.shunkgulley.com
Gallion’s is located at 104 N. Barrett Square, Unit C, Rosemary Beach. The hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., but limited to adults 18 and over after 3 p.m. daily. Reservations are accepted and you can make them via the website, www.gallions30a.com or over the phone, 850399-4909.

ROSEMARY BEACH – Boasting unparalleled views of the Gulf, elegantly executed plates of freshly-caught seafood and premium steaks, handcrafted cocktails, and an atmosphere that is both casual and refined, Pescado Seafood Grill & Rooftop Bar in Rosemary Beach is an incredible dining experience that also offers an escape from the world around it.
Glance around Pescado’s rooftop bar or its open, airy dining spaces, and you’ll notice that, after 1:30 p.m., the age minimum for all clientele is 18 years old – a fact which ensures the very ambiance they wish to create and maintain. Uninterrupted elegance allows each diner to focus on the food, the views and the experience as a whole. There is also a dress-code that keeps the restaurant’s vibe from falling into the beach-casual category so common to the local area. Appropriate to a restaurant whose name means “fish” in Spanish, Pescado takes a farm- and Gulf-to-table and seasonally driven approach to their food, building on the concept of shareable plates and seafood-centric items that are both eclectic and sophisticated. The menu, while hardly extensive, is one that shows a careful curation of flavors and focused intent.
“Our greens and vegetable produce are sourced from local farms,” said Joseph Freer, one of the three partners of Last Call Restaurant Group, the team behind Pescado Seafood Grill and Rooftop Bar and The Courtyard at Pescado. “We aim to utilize the freshest line of all ingredients, researching and receiving daily from our butchers and suppliers.”
It seems only natural, as Pescado explores dishes that are not only unique, but bold in flavor, created by Executive Chef John Engle. Featuring a raw bar that offers nary a whiff of oysters, the menu reflects their dedication to freshness, with ceviche whose accompaniments are determined seasonally as well as such dishes as ahi tuna tartare, amberjack tataki and a chilled seafood platter large enough for at least two.
Their concept is one that has served them well, combined with a creative menu of craft cocktails and that incredible view. And since opening in spring of 2018, the men of Last Call Restaurant Group – Freer, along with Greg Wakeham and Steven Sapp – have seen a steady stream of success, creating a following of clients who have great appreciation for their policies for dress and age, as well as for the food.
“Not much can beat the 360-degree panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico, though an incomparable dining experience at the same time adds to the singularity of the location,” said Freer. “Not only do we offer great views and dishes, we offer a knowledgeable bar program with a wine list from around the world and spirits that are much sought after.”
Pescado’s main dining room menu changes seasonally, with daily chef features. Any guests looking for a tasting experience have the option to book The Chef’s Table at The Courtyard at Pescado each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. The tasting menu is by reservation only and can be made by visiting the website or by calling the reservations team.
“NOT MUCH CAN BEAT
THE 360-DEGREE PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE GULF OF MEXICO, THOUGH AN INCOMPARABLE DINING EXPERIENCE AT THE SAME TIME ADDS TO THE SINGULARITY OF THE LOCATION.”
– Joseph Freer, Last Call Restaurant Group
“We also try to stay ahead of the rest with an exciting event program and by offering multiple styles of events to reach all demographics of our clientele. We run multiple in-house, but also offer an upscale array of weddings, rehearsal dinners and special events that guests will never forget,” said Freer. Theirs is a restaurant that certainly achieves the partners’ original vision for casual fine dining paired with matchless views, incredible food, drinks and service. And while they could easily bend to convention and play it safe, it’s their determination to swim against the current that has put them at the top.
Pescado Seafood Grill & Rooftop Bar is located at 74 Town Hall Road, Suite 4B, Rosemary Beach. Open Monday and Tuesday, 4 to 11 p.m.; Wednesday to Sunday, 9:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Reservations accepted. For more information, call 850-213-4600 or visit www.rooftop30a.com.

SEAGROVE BEACH – It’s been a much-loved part of the community for generations and this year Seagrove Village MarketCafé marks its 75th anniversary.
Well-known for its seafood baskets and po-boy sandwiches, someone once coined the phrase “Deep fried love” to describe the food and it stuck.
In fact, owner George Hartley says his love for the Shrimp Po-boy is the reason he bought the restaurant 25 years ago. And year after year, the food continues to get rave reviews.
“We were written up in Travel & Leisure as a great place to come get great fried seafood,” Hartley recalled. “Then in an article in Garden & Gun in 2008, they listed ‘100 Southern Foods You Must Try Before You Die.’ And they featured our grouper sandwich in the piece.”
When Hartley bought Seagrove Village MarketCafé, it had already been a longtime local mainstay.
“It never occurred to me when we bought it in 1999, it was the 50th anniversary then. That’s very cool in an area
where everything is new and coming up out of the ground.”
Sixteen years after buying Seagrove Market, the Hartleys did finally have to raze the old structure and build a new one. But they kept the “heart and soul” of the place, which included the same booths, decor, red baskets, and menus from the original restaurant.
In recent years, they’ve adjusted the menu slightly, to add a few healthier items.
“We’ve kept a lot of the old mainstays which of course are the grouper sandwiches, the fish baskets, oyster baskets, oyster po-boys, and all the good things everybody comes in daily to eat,” said Gregg Smith, executive chef for the Hartley Restaurant Group. “But we added an assortment of salads and lighter dishes, as well.”
There are many other items on the menu, too, such as burgers, tacos, quesadillas, and more. Side dishes are a big deal, too, like macaroni and cheese, broccoli salad, and don’t forget their famous hush puppies, and key lime pie for dessert.
This year, in celebration of 75 years of culinary excellence, Seagrove has temporarily introduced the George-normous Po-boy. It’s a huge specialty item with a lot of different ingredients.
“It’s got shrimp, oysters, fish, hush puppies, onions, pickles, sauces, and much more,” Hartley says. “It weighs about four pounds, costs $99, and comes with a free t-shirt.”
“ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS BUY IT FRESH, COOK IT TO ORDER, AND SERVE IT WITH A SMILE.”
– Ernie Walker, via George Hartley owner
When Hartley bought Seagrove Village MarketCafé decades ago, he had no restaurant experience. But the former owner, Ernie Walker, gave him some advice that has served him well.
“He said, ‘George, all you need to know is buy it fresh, cook it to order, and serve it with a smile.’”
Hartley has since opened other restaurants and currently owns Seagrove, Surfing Deer, and the newer Village Market at Watersound Town Center.
Seagrove, however, is where it all started. And Hartley says he’s grateful to have watched it continue to grow.
“We’re on the third generation since I bought it 25 years ago. People that came in as children with their parents back then are now married and bringing their kids in. This is an iconic place and I’m just fortunate to be the guy that got to carry the baton and the torch.”
The Seagrove Village MarketCafé is located at 2976 S. Highway 395, Seagrove Beach. The phone number is 850231-5736. They’re open seven days a week, 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended, but not required. Visit their website at seagrovevillagemarket.com.
