Sports & Culture - TU Delft

/ Introduction

Introduction The Sports & Culture Division is an important part of TU Delft. It is where students and staff have the chance to practise a sport and broaden their cultural and personal horizons. We have a huge range of activities on offer. You can choose from approximately seventy different sports and some seventy creative courses and workshops. All our teachers are professionals with a wealth of experience in their field.

It is up to you whether you use our halls, workshops and modern studios individually or as part of group following a dynamic programme packed with amazingly invigorating new activities. As we couldn’t possibly describe the entire range of courses and activities in this brochure, we have decided to highlight a few of the main ones. For the full range, please refer to our website.

TU Delft - Sports & Culture

Sports & Culture is open all year round. All Dutch and international students and staff are welcome. In addition, Sports & Culture is the home base for six student culture associations and forty sports clubs. More information about these clubs and associations is available on www.sc.tudelft.nl. ÂŤ

Cultural activities We have an extensive range of cultural pursuits on offer. The activities can be divided into six disciplines, all of which represent an area of cultural development.

Some of the courses will be useful in terms of your work or study programme. Consider, for example, a course in presentation skills and techniques, a graphics course in DTP or a photography course to get the best out of your holiday snaps. Culture allows you to take individual courses and workshops, attend stage performances or take out a subscription. If you opt for a subscription, you will have to pay a fixed amount per year. Depending on the type of subscription you sign up for, you will be entitled to spend two hours per day in the rehearsal rooms, workshops or dance studios. ÂŤ

Art There´s nothing like being creative with your hands. We provide courses in a number of crafts such as sculpture, instrument and furniture making, ceramics and screen printing. For these courses, you will work on real assignments and soon get to grips with the techniques needed to make your own work of art, piece of furniture or printed bag. Drawing and painting shows you how to build up the visual elements of a painting or if you prefer, how to excel in figure painting. You will be taught how to observe, how to develop your own ‘signature’ and how to work out the best composition for wide format paper. «

Photo & Film

This discipline entitles students to use the darkroom facilities and the photo and film studio. If you would like to learn more about photography, sign up for one of our photography courses. The courses teach you about lighting, using various lenses and other techniques. Or take a course in darkroom techniques.

TU Delft - Sports & Culture

This will show you the best way to develop your photos and achieve marvellous effects using modern techniques. If moving pictures are more your forte, learn about scenarios, camera angles and special effects in one of our film courses. ÂŤ

Music It’s great to be able to play a musical instrument, and it’s a skill you´ll never get tired of improving. The music course teaches you more about the instrument of your choice. Alternatively, you could form your own band and write and record your own songs. Or you could take the Pop Rock band course, a course that will put you into a band right from the start. In that way you experience to play together and play both your own songs and covers. Alongside courses involving instruments, we also offer singing courses and a DJ course for the technical music lovers amongst us. «

Talking of singers; did you know that Dinand Woesthoff of the Dutch Rock band 'Kane' studied at TU Delft?

Dance Dancing is good for bodyawareness, concentration and coordination, but above all, it is hot! Programmes like "Dancing with the stars" and "So you think you can dance" have become real hits. So bearing this in mind, Sports & Culture has devised a full programme of hip-shaking dance courses with music to match. Classical ballet is obviously a beautiful form of dance. But we also offer Modern dance, Jazz or Salsa or Zouk courses. Classes are set to exciting music that is guaranteed to get you up from your seat and onto the dance floor. ÂŤ

Theatre Enhancing your spontaneity on stage will give you the power to improvise wonderful, funny or moving scenes on the spot. This Theatre course gives you the opportunity to show what you’re made of. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes and throw caution to the wind! The exercises you do here will also help with your presentation or public speaking skills. Handy tricks in the business world! You could also take a production course or join a theatre company such as The Babylon Group. This international group of students is always on the lookout for new talent with or without acting experience. «

In 2010, The Babylon Group appeared at the street art festival 'MooiWeerSpelen’ in Delft, where it performed its own adaptation of the brilliant but crazy play ‘Accidental death of an Anarchist’. In 2009, they performed Othello.

Media Knowledge and experience in the area of media (new or other-wise) are useful both during and after your studies or work. It is handy if you can master at least some of the programmes. A course in DTP or Graphic Design will enable you to design an attractive cover and a professional (and legible) lay-out for your thesis. By the end of a course in Web design, you will even have launched your own website! ÂŤ

Martial arts

TU Delft is renowned for its technical breakthroughs in the world of top-class sport. These include innovations such as the special speed-skating suits and the revolutionary bobsleigh of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.

TU Delft - Sports & Culture

In martial arts, the aim is not to hit your opponent, but to defend yourself. We offer lessons in Judo and Karate, Aikido, Budo or Self-defence for women, as well as martial arts such as Boxing, Thai boxing and Fencing. Lessons take place in the specially designed dojo. ÂŤ

Fitness & Aerobics How do you fancy a fun class that leaves you feeling energetic and actually helps you to burn fat? Then look no further than an aerobics class such as Sambaerobics or the immensely popular Zumba. The infectious atmosphere and scintillating music during the classes will help you improve your physical fitness. Alternatively, you could opt for a Hip hop or Breakdancing course and master the trendiest moves. But if you are not one for dance steps or choreographed moves, you can come to the sports centre for Spinning or Body shape and Body & mind lessons, such as Pilates, Yoga or Tai Chi. These classes aim for total mental relaxation

16

interspersed with controlled physical exertion. The equipment in the modern gym is not only suitable for individual use, but is also used in various courses designed to make training with fitness equipment both fun and challenging. How about circuit training where you follow a fitness circuit as part of a group? Or the ‘15-minute abs workout’ which involves a tough 15-minute session training your tummy muscles? «

After a total refurbishment, the fitness gym was reopened in 2010. It is now fitted with all the latest equipment, and personal trainers are always on hand to give you advice.

Ball sports This discipline includes all the obvious sports such as basketball, soccer and korfball, as well as less common sports such as Futsal, Lacrosse and Rubgy 7s. Sports & Culture has numerous sports halls and pitches with extensive facilities. Training sessions, matches and tournaments are organised on a regular basis. ÂŤ

Racket sports The Sports & Culture terrain boasts a number of highquality tennis courts, where you can knock a ball around to your heart’s content. You can play individually or as part of a group. Table tennis tables and badminton courts are also available. What’s more, your sports card will give you access to various squash centres throughout Delft. «

Water sports Although Sports & Culture does not have its own swimming pool, we can still offer team water sports thanks to agreements we have made with pools throughout Delft. You can join a club to swim or play water polo, and even take part in the student championships. Rowing and sailing facilities are provided in the outdoor rivers and lakes. «

Endurance sports The idea of an endurance sports is to push yourself to your limit to experience the ultimate high. What’s more, they are good for your stamina and mental prowess. There are several clubs offering endurance sports in group form, such as speed skating (inline skating in the summer months), mountain biking and cycling.

Other activities Unfortunately, there simply isn’t room enough in this brochure to tell you about everything we have on offer. We haven’t even mentioned courses such as climbing, (one-off) workshops for Pole-dancing, Clothing and Style Advice or Wine Tasting. You will find a complete overview of our agenda on www.sc.tudelft.nl. The website also gives details of opening hours, prices and information about other student sports clubs and culture associations affiliated to our organisation. «

Specifically for women Who says Soccer and Rugby are men’s sports? Certainly not Sports & Culture. We organise Soccer and Rugby especially for women, as well as Futsal, Lacrosse and Thai boxing. Do you want to work on your confidence? A Self-defence course for women is a good place to start! «

Top-class sports TU Delft is keen to support top-class sporting talent. We do this by means of sponsoring and a top-class sports scheme. Under the scheme, top-class sportsmen and women can qualify for extra study months to compensate for the time they spend training at this level. “Combining semi-professional sports with a university degree programme is both demanding and time-consuming. The Sports & Culture top-notch fitness facilities allow me to enjoy this rewarding combination right here on campus.” - Robert Bouten -

We give top-class sportsmen and women all the encouragement they need. «
