Thoughts for Personal/Family Worship: Chapter 4
Satan tempts us to doubt God’s Word and goodness and resisting the Devil by exercising faith in specific truths of Scripture. The power: although our first Adam fell under temptation, casting all mankind under the Devil’s power, Christ stood firm and therefore can effectively lead us to conquer sin (Heb. 2:18; 4:15; 1 John 3:8). How do we find victory over temptation in Him?
Though these men would be specially trained by Christ for apostleship (ch. 10), Christ’s call is essentially the same in every age: “Follow me.” Discipleship involves submission to Christ’s teaching, fellowship with His person, imitation of His ways, and setting aside everything that hinders our allegiance to Him (vv. 18–22). He has a right to each of our lives. He alone deserves to be followed. The life of faith is one of following the Lamb wherever He leads (Rev. 14:4). What does this mean in your life right now? The Sermon on the Mount (5:1—7:29)
5:1 This is the first of the five great discourses of Christ v recorded in this gospel (chs. 5–7; 10; 13; 18; 24–25). went up into a mountain. As Moses did when God revealed the law (Ex. 19:3,20; 24:12). Christ is the new and greater Moses, the supreme Prophet (17:3–5; Deut. 18:15). Jesus’ message holds together in Himself as King of the kingdom (13:41; 16:28; 21:5; 25:34; 27:37). His kingdom or reign has already begun in His people (vv. 3,10), transforming their lives by changing their nature (7:17; 12:33; 15:13). Christ’s standards of obedience are impossible apart from His grace, and His laws constantly press His people to seek more grace from God (6:9–13). 5:3–10 The Beatitudes of Christ are a pithy exposition of repentance in light of the kingdom (4:17). Blessed. Rich in the benefits of God’s grace, regardless of their present, outward condition (Pss. 1:1; 2:12; 112:1). theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The present tense (vv. 3,10) implies that these people already partake of God’s reign in this present life by the Spirit (12:28), though the full experience of God’s glory is yet to be experienced in the future (they shall; cf. 13:43). 5:3 poor in spirit. Recognizing their complete spiritual bankruptcy (Isa. 57:15; 66:2; Luke 18:9–14; Rev. 3:17). 5:4 mourn. Not the sorrow of the world, but sorrow over sin against God, producing repentance and zeal for the Lord (2 Cor. 7:10–11). comforted. Christ’s Spirit-anointed preaching announces that God will heal the brokenhearted sinner and replace sorrow with joy (Isa. 61:1–3; cf. Ps. 30:5). 5:5 meek. Not weakness or passivity, but humility, gentleness, and patience in doing good as they wait on the Lord for vindication and blessing (Ps. 37:11). inherit the earth. Receive the promised covenant inheritance (Rom. 4:13) in the new creation (Isa. 65:17–18; 2 Peter 3:13; Rev. 21:1). 5:6 hunger and thirst.
