Happy Anniversary! We are delighted to present our readers with this collage of vintage photos highlighting the history and heritage of the 31st Fighter Wing. This year, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 31st Fighter Wing activating at Aviano Air Base — and what an incredible 25 years it has been! Still, there is so much more history to celebrate. The 31st Fighter Wing was first established in 1947 and has had multiple names, assignments, and stations since moving to Aviano in 1994. Much has changed through the years, yet one thing remains the same — we strive to “Return with Honor.

Find the Wyverns! In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the 31FW arriving in Aviano, we’re changing things up in this month’s issue! Instead of finding ONE Wyvern, we have hidden MANY Wyverns throughout the Grapevine. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find all the Wyverns and send us the total amount you find. Email your answer to 31fss.marketing@us.af.mil for a chance to win a $25 FSS gift card! Check inside the cover each month to see if you were last month’s winner! Hint: All the Wyverns count, including the ones on this page! Congratulations, Jason Wade, for winning last month’s drawing! The Wyvern was located on page 13, in the water of the Water Fitness Mania ad. Lt Col Michelle Mobley

Sam Child Sam’s primary role at the A&FRC is in the Transition Assistance Program, but he does so much more! He is instrumental in ensuring that everyone separating or retiring from Aviano — 277 personnel for FY2019 — are afforded the valuable resources needed for a smooth transition to civilian life. Sam provides ongoing support to our partners, including a recent Ghedi visit to teach Four Lenses and provide much needed video teleconferencing equipment. He was the Wing point of contact for the July USAFE Wounded Warrior event at Aviano, and he also coordinated with the Wounded Warrior Ambassadors to connect them with 554 Aviano members through 20 visits to different units on base. Thanks to Sam’s efforts, Aviano had the highest recorded unit visits for USAFE. Additionally, Sam is studying to become an accredited personal financial counselor and volunteers his off-duty time working with children in the local community. Way to go, Sam — keep up the great work!

GOOD LUCK TO

CAPT ADALYS RAMIREZ–AMADOR Representing Aviano Air Base at the Alpha Warrior Final Battle Championship in Texas on Sept 12 A Conversation with Capt Ramirez–Amador

What would you consider your fitness level and how did you get there? “I have always gravitated toward fitness. As a little girl instead of watching cartoons, I would turn on the exercise channel and would do aerobics in a leotard and leg warmers. My mom even bought me my own set of mini dumbbells! I also did gymnastics when I was younger. In October 2018, I deployed to Kenya and to pass the time and motivate my Airmen to get into shape, I taught High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes and did CrossFit daily.”

Advice to Airmen and their families who are looking to improve their physical fitness?

“You lose nothing in trying. I didn’t think I would make it this far but did. Oftentimes waiting for the perfect moment (the moment when you feel completely ready) will prevent you from reaching your full potential.”

Outdoor Rec’s skydiving trips in Venice have been my favorite. I’ve been on four jumps so far.

31st CES HVAC Team Since the first week of June, the 22 member HVAC team (Civil Engineering’s most undermanned shop) has selflessly and tirelessly worked to sustain Aviano and Ghedi’s air conditioning systems. During the last two months, the team has battled against severe heat and electrical storms that have caused 150 emergencies and urgent responses on 188 facilities. Determined to ensure the base populace (our Airmen) were taken care of, they diligently worked through contract issues, antiquated system failures, and competing priorities. The team successfully restored cooling to Aviano Youth Programs, Ghedi Air Base’s DFAC, the Italian Mensa, and five dormitory buildings… just to name a few. Additionally, the team proactively installed and upgraded new chillers at the PAHA, Mass Briefing Facility, and the Aviano DFAC. Despite 48% manning, this team of Spartans stands ready to respond and live by their motto, “Hot or Cold, We Can’t Be Beat!”
