ENVIRONMENTAL ROADMAP Every year about twenty environmental projects based on sustainable technologies are under implementation in the Polar Division. In 2015, particulate emissions in Norilsk Region dropped by 731 tons (8%), i.e. copper oxide by 80 tons (24%), nickel oxide by 18 tons (8%), lead and its inorganic compounds by 3 tons (19%); as well as inorganic dust emissions containing silica by 223 tons (11%). Furthermore, carbon monoxide emissions decreased in comparison with the 2014 by 1,320 tons (25%). In 2016, major projects of «New Norilsk Environmental Roadmap» were implemented: Talnakh Concentrator modernization and expansion to switch Nickel Plant feed to Nadezhda Plant; closure of Nickel Plant to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 380,000 tons in the residential area. Nickel Plant is the oldest asset of the Company (commissioned in 1942). The plant shutdown in 2016 allowed to modify the process and to significantly improve the environment in Norilsk. This project was fulfilled in cooperation with the government.

56

In July 2014, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree to anticipatorily set zero export duty rates on metals, which allowed Nornickel to speed up ecological events realization. The resulted funds – about 11 bln rubles – were entirely spent to the program of outdated operations shutdown and relevant environmental and social issues. «Sulfur Project» being Stage 2 of the program (Stage 1 is related to Nickel Plant closure) is aimed to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions of the Polar Division operations by 75%. The Company has engaged the leading construction engineering company SNC Lavalin (France) to design the project. «Sulfur Project» is unique in terms of its scope and complexity. As a result of the Nornickel environmental programs Nadezhda Plant will cut down sulfur dioxide emissions by 1.2 mln tons per year. The total long-term effect of the program is a reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions to one quarter of the current levels. The main positive result of the year is Nickel Plan shutdown as its closure will prevent 380,000 tons of harmful substances from being released into the air, it corresponds to about half of all emissions of Moscow.

EXPERTS’ COMMENTS

First Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce of the Russian Federation Gleb NIKITIN: «On implementing its investment projects Nornickel is among the first to comply with Russian environmental regulations being amended. A perfect example of the Company intentions is step by step shutdown of Nickel Plant. The Company is running its business and demonstrating the unprecedented social responsibility. The modernization program is a multi-billion ruble effort to improve the environmental parameters of the Company operations. Key projects of Nornickel under implementation will allow to significantly reduce sulfur and other pollutants air emissions. Such technologies would be acknowledged as top-of-the-line regarding as well international experience and Russian potential». «Zapolyarny Vestnik» August 11, 2016

EXPERTS’ COMMENTS

Krasnoyarsk Territory Governor Viktor TOLOKONSKY: «Results of Nornickel operations largely define industry and budget performances both at federal and regional levels. Focus of Company’s efforts to solve issues including environmental ones contributes towards welfare improvement in Norilsk Industrial Region. Nornickel plans its activity using integrated and detailed approach and today we may rate the progress, for example, obsolete Nickel Plant closure as a considerable qualitative change. There are 12 large-scale companies in Krasnoyarsk Territory with strong environmental impact plus almost half a million vehicles exhaust, boilers and power stations emissions – they all are polluting the environment. Clean-up costs are very expensive. In order to make the air more breathable most of the companies spend millions of rubles. Nornickel spends a thousand times more – billions of rubles». «Zapolyarny Vestnik» August 14, 2014

Chairman of Krasnoyarsk Territory Legislative Assembly Alexander USS: «Since Nornickel is one of the main taxpayers which generates about one third of the region budget it is important to fully keep its tax payments during nickel production optimization. If so, Nickel Plant closure is an evident advantage: it is impossible to continue outdated production particularly within the city boundaries. Today environmental conditions of Norilsk Industrial Region are completely different. The Company also successfully handled the program in social dimension. Case study shows that Nornickel solves any issue and this can be considered a positive result». «Zapolyarny Vestnik» August 11, 2016

Environmental Programs Director of All-Russian Public Organization «Green Patrol» Roman PUKALOV: «Nickel Plant closure in Norilsk is one of the major ecological events in Russia. Upon completion of all projects aimed at sulfur dioxide reduction, the Company may challenge the title of the environmental leader among all Russian large-scale operations. To realize the enormity of the program suffice it to say that total sulfur dioxide emissions in Krasnoyarsk Territory amount to about 1.9 mln tonnes. Meanwhile the plan is to reduce it by 372,000 tons (about 20%) just in two years. It is a breakthrough for the region environment as annual variations of sulfur dioxide emissions have not exceeded 15,000 tons in recent years». «Zapolyarny Vestnik» November 26, 2015

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION The Company actively cooperates with the natural reserves of Taimyr and Kola Peninsula and supports their initiatives. The total land area remediated with the Nornickel assistance is 123 hectares. It took 96 mln rubles. Over 10 years 1 mln trees and shrubs has been planted. A number of large projects on biodiversity preservation were fulfilled under the Polar Division support and financing. One of the large-scale projects was to save lesser white-fronted geese listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation. Consequently, the population of the endangered breed has reached 4,000 birds on the Taimyr Peninsula.

LESSER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE

Another significant national project on monitoring of the polar bears habitat was implemented jointly with Russian scientists and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Some polar bears were equipped with the satellite collars to analyze their travels. Every year the Polar Division of Nornickel releases into waterways of Taimyr about 200,000 fingerlings of valuable fish species. Thus, the Company encourages the natural diversity in water reservoirs of Taimyr. The Russian national public organization «Green Patrol» highly appreciated the environmental program of Nornickel and stated that «thanks to the Company's initiatives Krasnoyarsk Territory appeared to be one of the leaders in the environmental protection financing in 2015.»

TAIMYR

THE TAIMYR PENINSULA IS THE NORTHERNMOST PENINSULA OF EURASIA. IT IS UNIQUE IN MANY ASPECTS AND PRIMARILY IN ITS SIZE, IT STRETCHES NEARLY 1,000 KM BOTH IN LATITUDE AND IN LONGITUDE. ITS AREA IS 400 SQ. KM. THIS IS COMPARABLE WITH THE TERRITORY OF NETHERLANDS, FRANCE AND ENGLAND PUT ALTOGETHER.

79

14 / TAIMYR

EXPLORATION

GEOGRAPHY

CLIMATE

Taimyr remained uninhabited for a very long time due to its harsh climate. The first people appeared here in the Neolithic age. They were nomadic reindeer hunters. At the end of the 10th century AD, the ancestors of the present natives settled here. The Russians have colonized Taimyr since the end of the 17th century and have founded villages with the settled population – Khatanga, Volochanka, Karaul, etc. In 1667, Dudinka was laid as a wintering quarters which grew into the trade center of the Northern Yenisei and the Taimyr administrative center later on.

Taimyr is the only Russian region that is located entirely inside the Arctic Circle, between the 68th and the 78th parallels north. It runs between the Yenisei Gulf of the Kara Sea and the Khatanga Gulf of the Laptev Sea. Its northern tip, the Cape Chelyuskin, is the northernmost point of Eurasia. The Taimyr coast is heavily indented. Geographically, the region is highly remote from major cities and other populated areas of the continent. That’s why the people of Norilsk called the rest of Eurasia the ‘mainland’.

Being the witness of the glacial period Taimyr keeps its traces in the form of permafrost. In winter, many rivers and lakes freeze solid and the ice at the ponds bottom does not melt even in summer. The air is rarified and the atmospheric pressure is low, and the daily temperature varies within the range of 20 degrees. The bulk of precipitation falls in summer season. In summer, northern wind prevails and southern wind blows in winter. Most of Atlantic cyclones fade away on Taimyr, this explains why the region is often called the graveyard of cyclones.

80

MINERAL RESOURCES

Only 5% of the Taimyr resources is explored, although nearly all kinds of mineral resources were found here. The region stores the world’s largest copper-nickel ore deposits as well as uniquely extensive deposits of industrial-grade diamonds, precious metals, coal, semiprecious stones and other minerals. More than 30 oil and gas fields were discovered on the peninsula and the adjacent areas. The largest Russian Mining & Metallurgical Company «Nornickel» operates on Taimyr.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The Arctic is a unique region with peculiar nature. Taimyr is the home to 35 species of mammals, 140 species of birds and 30 species of fish. The world's largest population of muskoxen and reindeer live here. Generally speaking, many things on Taimyr can be referred to as «the northernmost». For example, the world's northernmost Museum of Mammoth in Khatanga, the northernmost and the only surface gas pipeline in the world and the northernmost world's largest nature reserve with total area of 4.17 mln ha.

82

POPULATION

Taimyr is sparsely populated. If we divide the peninsula area by its population size, then about 20 sq. km will fall at each inhabitant. The Taimyr is a native place for five small-numbered indigenous ethnic groups of the North, namely: the Dolgans, the Nenets, the Nganasans, the Enets and the Evenks. As per national census 2010, their population on the Taimyr Peninsula totaled 10,132. Since the earliest times their main activities were reindeer herding, hunting and fishing, and until now their most important holidays are Fisherman's Day and Reindeer Herder’s Day.

83

14 / TAIMYR

INDIGENOUS TRIBES The low-numbered peoples of the North have cherished many vibrant traditions and identity arose from reindeer herding and hunting life pattern and distinctive way of living in the severe North.

The Evenks live in the peninsula south since they migrated from Evenkiya. The Nenets are the native tundra and forest tundra inhabitants.

84

The Enets reside in between the Yenisei and Pyasina rivers being the smallest nation in the Far North. The Nganasans is the most ancient people of Taimyr populating the entire central part of the peninsula between the Pyasina and Khatanga rivers.

The Dolgans is the most numerous and young nation of Taimyr originated from the mixture of the Evenks, the Yakuts and Russian peasants in 17-19th centuries.

CULTURE Despite of the language impoverishment, most native tribes cherish their folklore: fairy-tales, legends, narratives and riddles. The collected northern folk epics are published though in short –run printings. The tribes maintain their traditional games such as jumping over the sleds and throwing ‘a maut’ – a kind of a lasso to catch reindeers. Annually during their great event – the Reindeer Herder’s Day – representatives of the tribes hold reindeer races.

FOLK GROUP «KHEIRO» Kheiro is a well-known folk group and a cultural brand of the Taimyr natives. Kheiro is Dolgan for «the rising sun». All the group members are from different Taimyr tribes. They sing folk songs and perform folk dances, revive old customs and traditions of their peoples. Their bright and colorful dresses keep up the history of their national costumes. Alexander Koryukov, a composer, and Vitaly Tselishchev, a choreographer, created the folk group in 1969. They recorded songs and stories of tundra, studied ritual movements, sounds, costumes and all of that underlay Kheiro songs and dances. The folk group won numerous awards and diplomas. In 1970, it was honored the title of The People’s Folk Group.

THINGS TO DO IN NORILSK AND ON TAIMYR

To take a helicopter to the Putorana Plateau in the south of the Taimyr peninsula – there is no other way to get there and some areas are inapproachable even with a helicopter. UNESCO inscribed the Plateau in the World Heritage List. Thousands of lakes spread over 250,000 kilometers, together they form the second largest capacity of open freshwater in Russia after Lake Baikal.

88

To nutrify yourself with energy at the Shaitan mountain which is located in 17 km from Lama. It takes a 6-8 hours ranger guided walk to get there. Shamans used to perform their rituals at the foot of the mountain. Prehistoric stone structure ruins with faded carvings were discovered there. On a clear day one can see «Shaitan’s face» – an enormous human face half profile – on the mountain flank.

To participate in a sledge dog race. Sledge dog sports began to evolve in Norilsk recently - local photo artist Gennady Poltorykhin has made his home in the country and has founded husky breeding kennels here. Now his big ‘husky’ family has clear hierarchy. Quick and strong Ayan is the pack leader. But the alpha dog is Gennady himself.

TO TRAVEL BY SHIP FROM DUDINKA TO KRASNOYARSK. THE TRAVEL TAKES 5 DAYS AND 8 HOURS AND COVERS 1,984 KM

To run ice-cold rivers. Many nautical tourists take motor boats up the Norilskaya and Talaya rivers, and go through the Melkoye lake to the Lama lake far end. The distance is 150 km. By the way, the ticket price could easily exceed that of Moscow to Norilsk flight.

To take a motor boat up the Norilskaya river to Lama – a lake of singular beauty which is located in 120 km from Norilsk. Lake surface area is 318 sq.km, its depth is over 250 m. Lama bed is a salt deposit, but the water remains fresh.

To take part in an ethnic winter welcoming festival the Grand Argish in November, to witness reindeer sled races at the Reindeer Herder’s Day in spring or attend the Fisherman’s Day in summer.

89

15 / TOURISM. THINGS TO DO IN NORILSK AND ON TAIMYR

To take part in mass insanity – smelt ice fishing on Yenisei in spring. Smelt is a small fish smelling of fresh cucumbers. In general, fishing is very popular among Norilsk and Taimyr inhabitants. Whitefish, sturgeon, grayling and taimen are found in waterbodies of the peninsula.

90

To witness Yenisei ice-drift – generally the river becomes open in the beginning of June. Half of Norilsk population seeks to go to Dudinka at this period to see this incredible scene. Harbor facilities of piers, runways and cranes of the Dudinka sea port are especially demounted to avoid their being demolished by drifting ice.

To take a quad bike (in summer) or a snowmobile (in winter) and ride around the tundra. These vehicles are extremely popular among Norilsk citizens who are fond of hunting and fishing. Or you can go skiing, or simply walk: there are several hiking fellowships in Norilsk.

To take part in the Russia’s biggest professional holiday celebration – the Metallurgist’s Day in July. In 2015, it fell at Nornickel 80th anniversary and the celebration became one of the most grandiose events in the history of Norilsk.

To get caught in a black blizzard and experience a strong adrenalin rush. Black blizzard is a Norilsk term for a snowstorm with wind speed above 40m/sec, which is turning into a hurricane.

To enjoy northern lights. Sometimes they hang over the city. But not in the midnight sun season which is another focus of many Norilsk visitors. During this period, the sun never sets.

NORILSK SOUVENIRS 1. Fish – As a present Norilsk people compliment their northern fish: fresh-frozen, salted, smoked. 2. Venison – in a different form, for example, sausage or yukola (jerked meet). 3. Local bone carvings – reindeer antler and mammoth ivory statuettes, some of them are true works of art. 4. Unty (high fur boots) – footwear made of reindeer skin. A perfect choice of winter shoes to protect against the most severe frosts. 5. Reindeer fur and skin handicrafts of northern style. Some think them as a talisman.

CARPACCIO OF VENISON Ingredients: • Venison - 70-80 g • Cowberry – 5-10 g • Salt (coarse) • Pepper - to taste • Honey • Balsamic vinegar • Salad rocket Cooking time: 15–20 minutes

SAUCE FOR CARPACCIO

Meat quality is a matter of priority You need fresh frozen venison to prepare the dish. The best choice is fillet with no sinews or films. Cut the meat into medium slices. Then cover the venison slices with clingfilm or plastic bag and tenderize the slices toward their edges until thin, but without rupture. Spread the meat over the pre-cooled plate. Salt, pepper and pour with the sauce cooked beforehand.

94

Let balsamic vinegar and honey evaporate until thick and viscous, then add some cowberries (or pomegranate or anything to your taste) to the sauce. Serve chilled. Decorate with a few rocket leaves rather to make visual effect than to expose its flavor. A dish should be smelt, then seen and afterwards appreciated. You may use grated Parmesan cheese for topping. But it is for foodies. Cheese pairs well with the beef, but should be carefully combined with venison so as not to spoil specific game taste by rich taste of ripened Parmesan cheese. Venison is ideally emphasized by the sweet & sour flavour.

VENISON MEDALLIONS WITH COWBERRY SAUCE AND GRILLED VEGETABLES Ingredients: • Seasonal vegetables: - Courgettes - Eggplants - Zucchinis - Cherry tomatoes - Bell peppers of different colors • Fresh mushrooms (oyster and field mushrooms) - total 230 g • Venison (fillet) - 200 g • Cowberry sauce - 25 g This is an ideal dish for those who takes care of their health. Meat and vegetables are easy to digest. Venison is dietetic food. Coarsely chop vegetables and mushrooms, wash them, add salt and pepper and grill. If oil is used for frying, put vegetable afterwards on the disposable paper towel to get rid of excess oil. It is important not to overcook vegetables. Cooked vegetables remain juicy on the inside. Meanwhile, cut meat into slices and fry them on both sides until half-cooked. Bake it in the oven until ready-to-eat alike medium fried steak. Venison remains juicy and tender. Dish out ready-made ingredients. Serve with cowberry sauce. The dish looks picturesque and colorful.

COWBERRY SAUCE Spread cowberries over the frying pan, add some sugar, salt and pepper to taste. Boil until the mass thickens. When crowberries get tender, rub them through the sieve. The sauce should have balanced sweet-sour taste. It harmonizes not only with venison, but with any game (partridge, hare, etc.), as well as beef.

SUGUDAY

Ingredients: • Cooled fish: pollan or whitefish • Vegetable oil • Vinegar diluted with water • Onion • Lemon Ingredients ratio – to taste Cooking time: 30 minutes, time for fish cutting included The premise of successful dish is fish freshness. Whitefish or pollan is the best choice for suguday. Fish should be slightly frozen. Initially, the northern natives, who had no onion or lemon or pepper, prepare suguday as «stroganina» (a kind of sashimi) – one of the most popular dish of northern national cuisine for today: scale and skin frozen fish and cut in strips. Over time, the recipe was adapted. Today, marinade is used in addition to fish and salt while preparing suguday. In the restaurants suguday is usually prepared with fillet. When at home, you can take the whole fresh-frozen fish. Cut off its head and tail. Gill and skin the fish. Cut the fish into slices along with spinal bone. Put the sclices into the bowl, salt and pepper, pour oil, top with onion rings. Sprinkle with freshly squeezed lemon juice. If you want to make the dish more sour, you can add a little diluted vinegar. Stir up. In 10 minutes the dish is ready. Ideally suguday should be prepared just before serving.
