Are herbs therapeutic? The usage of plants for pharmaceutical reasons is as old as civilization and the first writings on therapeutic plants comes from the Sumerians in 2200 BC. The father of medicine, Greek Hippocrates, recorded about 400 herbs whose usage was already known in the 5th century BC. In the 1st century BC Dioskouridis wrote a botanical manual in which 600 plants are mentioned. Later botanical research was based on this work. Claudius Galinos (129-199 AD) was the 2nd most important Greek doctor, after Hippocrates. The complex pharmaceutical preparations he produced himself are known as Galenics in literature and were based on pharmaceutical herbs, numerous of which are still used today. 11

Herbotherapy and adaptogens Gl is on top of the list of adaptogens. The term adaptogens refers to plants which have the ability to adapt to every organism depending on its uniqueness and offer it exactly what it needs, balancing and correcting its functions. That is, the same herb taken by two different peopleone suffering from hypertension and the other from hypotension- will regulate both people’ s blood pressure. Adaptogens can identify the particular needs of every organism and stimulate the organic functions that will restore the balance in the human body. It should be pointed out that adaptogens have no unpleasant, undesirable or even dangerous side effects that can occur during treatment. Besides, most adaptogens form part of the food chain, as they are actually food. 17
