J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fell Pony Society Show & Sale, Mountain Moorland Ponies & Shetland Ponies, Saturday 26th October 2024.
North West Auctions held its annual sale of Mountain and Moorland ponies, registered Fell ponies on behalf of the Fell Pony Society and for the first time a sale of registered Shetland ponies on behalf of the Shetland Pony Society. The Auction Mart was filled to bursting with vendors, buyers, visitors and ponies with an excellent atmosphere and some good prices.
Mountain & Moorland
The day started with the Mountain and Moorland section which was topped by a very smart, full up and beautifully presented black Section A Dales mare, Cleatlam Calamity Jane from G & R Dunn. After some brisk bidding she was knocked down for 6,200 gns to K McClements. The same stable also sold Wearside Lottie a 2 year old Section B Dales filly at 2800gns and Sowermire Queenie a 13 year old bay Dales mare at 1600 gns.
G & R Dunn also sold Login Bullseye a 2 year old Welsh Section D gelding to make over 15hh for 1400gns. Welsh Section As sold to 500gns for Wolverton Tommy, a 2 year old 11.2hh gelding from M Smallman and 300gns for Bryntwrog Serena a 6 year old 11.2hh mare from L Moss. Welsh Section Cs sold to 600 gns for Tyntyla Lady Catkin, an 11 year old driving and show winning mare from Mrs A Caunce who also sold a Welsh Section B yearling colt at 250gns.
Two Shetlands registered with the British Spotted Pony Society from Anwen Jones, sold to 1000gns for Talog Miss Spotify, a filly foal to make about 32” and Talog Mr Spotify, a colt foal at 600gns. This stud also sold Talog Lady Daphne, a homozygous 2 year old registered Shetland filly, in-foal to a few spot stallion at 850gns.
Other Shetlands sold to 700gns for Lowmill Rainbow a palomino and white yearling filly from D Cartmel, 500gns for a dun and white filly foal from W Railton and 450gns for a registered 3 year old colt from Edwina Headley.

The Fell Pony sale was topped by Dalewin Xtreme, a lovely, unbroken 4 year old bay mare and again well presented, from long time supporters, E & H Winder, selling to 4200gns to B Campbell, closely followed by Bybeck Mervyn, a 12 year old, quiet to ride gelding at 4000 gns. Two newly broken mares, Lathomdale Blossom and Lathomdale Amy from J Baxendale sold for 2200gns and 2000gns respectively, whilst The Shelby Stud sold Greenholme Onyx a 4 year old mare ready to break at 2800gns. Youngsters were led by Lunesdale Courtney, a 3 year filly, scanned in-foal for 2025 also from the Shelby Stud and selling for 3200gns to BAR Taylor, followed by the Show Champion, Oscar II, a 2 year old black colt by Lunesdale Black Ice and FIS clear, selling for 2800 gns to Mr RN Beaty.
Foals were headed by Greenholme Sienna, a black filly by Heltondale Prince V from the Greenholme Stud, selling for 3000gns to F Lawson. The Greenholme Stud also sold filly foals at 1300gns and 1200gns. The Hardendale Stud sold Hardendale Cortina at 2200gns, Mercedes at 1600gns and Capri at 1400gns.
Colt foals were headed by Lunesdale Frankie at 1000gns with Mr AW Morland winning the Fell Pony Heritage Trust trophy in memory of Isobel Potter for the highest priced colt foal too. The Lunesdale Stud also sold Lunesdale Freddie for 800gns. Other colts sold at 700gns for Dalewin Blizzard and Dalewin Billy Joel from the Dalewin Stud and Greenholme Starman from the Greenholme Stud.

There was a pleasing entry of 93 registered Shetland ponies for the first Society Sale at North West Auctions and we would like to thank all vendors and buyers for supporting this sale.
A lovely, tiny filly foal from Anwen Jones of the Talog Stud, Talog Daisy Love, topped the market at 3600gns selling to Mr R Hunter.
She was closely followed by Breckenlea Klassic, a 3 year old skewbald, licensed stallion from Amanda Slater who had travelled all the way from the Shetland Isles and sold for 3500 gns to L Joslin. Mr Richadson of the Lunespring Stud sold his 15 year old piebald stallion for 2700gns.
Leading the mare prices was Halstock Daisy May at 2000gns and Cadno Midnight Pixie at 1500gns both from S Calvert. Mr A Kirkby sold his Gilsland Wells Moonsonee mare at 1100gns and in the 2 and 3 year old fillies Ms D Dale sold Sandfold Honey a 2 year old bay filly for 2000gns.
Young colts were sold to 2200gns for Granville Clonmel for Mr J Watson, with yearlings topping at 2000gns for Lunespring Poppy May and 1600gns for Newlandsgreen Misty from Ian Fleming.
As well as the sale topper, Anwen Jones also went on to sell foals at 2000gns for Talog Lady Saphire, Talog Calvin Klein at 1600gns and 1500gns for Talog Midnight Fantasy. The consignment from Craig Eland’s Lowmill Stud was led by Lowmill Violet selling at 1100gns.

Prime Lambs
Another strong entry of 674 prime lambs saw an SQQ of 270p/kg, well bred and hard fed lambs continue to attract the keenest buyers attention. Selling to £162 and 345p/kg for Texel cross from M Coxhead, Preston with others to £160 and 340p/kg from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby. Other well finished pure and ¾ bred lambs were regularly 290p/kg to 320p/kg, well finished first cross lambs were 270p/kg to 290p/kg. Grass finished lambs were ranging from 240p/kg to 265p/kg, depending on quality and type. Pure hill lambs sold to £129 for Cheviots, £123.50 for Mashams, and £117 for heavy Mules. To ensure maximum returns from your lambs, vendors are strongly encouraged to feed lambs.

Dairy Dispersal
North West Auctions had the pleasure of conducting the complete herd dispersal on behalf of DJ A & L Sutcliffe, Winmarleigh. Which saw buyers in attendance from throughout the northern countries and midlands, all keen to secure additional and replacement stock. The sale peaked at £2400 for a Holstein Friesian cross heifer with second calved cows to £2250 and older cows in their fourth lactation selling to £2000 and others regularly £1600 to £1900. Dry cows sold to £1550, in calf heifers sold to £1500, yearlings to £850 and young calves to £220.

Successful weekly sale of prime lambs sees numbers up on the week and an impressive show of young handler sheep met with a strong trade. Top pound per head on the day went to H Huggonson, Whinfell with a 50kg Texel lamb selling for £200. The top pence per kilo of the day was for a Beltex from Masie Bereford, who was awarded champion with this lamb selling to 425p/kg. Heavy lambs prove harder work on the week with lambs over the 52kg mark reaching 298p/kg from Messrs Winder, Gaisgill. Lighter lambs sold well, topping at £136 for 36kg Beltexs from J Knipe, Kendal. 44kg lambs top at £174 for Texels of Messrs Atkinson & Partners, Selside.

Calves today were sharper on the fortnight, rearers sold to £510 for 6 week old British Blue bulls from A Pickthall, New Hutton with others at the same age at £480 for an eight week old from W&S Airey, Whittington. Limousin bulls sold to £420 for a twenty seven day old from Colby Farm, Appleby. Rearing heifers sold to £400 for a five week old British Blue from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton with the real youngest to £320 for a Limousin at twenty nine days old from Colby Farm, Appleby and others at the same age from J&S Brakewell, Kirkby in Furness returning £310. Aberdeen Angus heifers achieved £160 for real babies from FB Dunning, Orton.
Weaned calves sold to £640 for British Blue bulls from A Handley, Haversham with other British Blue bulls to £590 from AK&BM Robinson, Arkholme. Heifers sold to £600 twice for British Blues from A Handley, Haversham. Stirks saw a top price of £940 for seven month old Shorthorn steers from IM Clegg, Kendal with a pair of four month old British Blues reaching £920 from JD Dixon, Longsleddale. A seasonal entry of breed breeding cattle, saw a dispersal sale of behalf of Messrs Helm & Proctor, Grimsargh who sold Limousin cross heifers with British Blue cross bull calves to £2250 with continental cows with both bull and heifer calves at foot from the same home regularly £1500 to £1800. Several in calf cows sold to £1350 for Limousin cross from A Thompson, Carnforth.
Store Cattle
A very weather show of cattle were also met with a much enthusiasm. British Blue heifers from Messrs Proctor, Kirkby Stephen sold to £1410. Limousin bullocks from S Whitehead, Middleton also sold to £1410. A pair of British Blue bullocks from Messrs Moorhouse, Grange Over Sands achieved £1380, with the same home selling others to £1340. More cattle are required again in a fortnight with many buyers going home empty handed.

A great day all round for those selling calves off the low, with an incredible ringside of buyers proving J36 is the place to sell them.

A bumper entry of 99 cull cows sold to an overall average of 178p/kg, with a large proportion of the sale being dairy breds. Beef cows sold to a top of 249.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from B Heys, St Helens with other better quality feeding types 195p/kg to 220p/kg. Top grossing beef cows was a Blonde from T Atkinson, Ulverston totalling £1799. Dairy cows sold to 174.5p/kg for British Friesian from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness with an entry of leaner parlour type cows 130p/kg to 150p/kg. Heavy weight Holstein Friesians sold to £1371 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack. OTM beef heifers sold to 244.5p/kg and £1513 for a Limousin cross from W Atkinson & Son, Crook with diary heifers to 199p/kg and £1349.
OTM steers sold to 204p/kg and £1264 for Galloway cross.
A single cull bull sold to 194.5p/kg and £1793 for a Limousin from J&J Whaley, Hawes.

Calves & Weanlings
A slightly smaller show of calves today, rearers were still easy to place with British Blue bulls to £445 from T&CM Kelsall, Chipping and £440 from JP&C Robson, Claughton on Brock. Native calves sold to £430 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from JK&BJ Birkett, Morecambe. Younger bull calves sold to £350 for a British Blue at twenty seven days old from TL Baldwin, Forton and a twenty three days old Hereford to £235 from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore. Rearing heifers sold to £390 twice both from JP&C Robson, Claughton on Brock with Aberdeen Angus cross to £260 from the same home.
Weaned calves were possibly sharper, selling to £620 for a pair of British Blue steers from PS&H Eckersley, Mellor with others at £590 from the same home. TE&MM Kidd, Ellel presented very nice Herefords to £530 twice for bulls and £450 (x4) for Herefords.

Store Cattle
The weekly store cattle sale at Lancaster saw an increase in numbers with 290 going through the main ring. Taking top spot today would be regular Lancaster supporters Pilling Hall, Pilling with a well-formed Limousin steer at £1900. Not far behind also with a Limousin at £1880 was EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet who had other Limousins at £1700 and continued their good days trading with Charolais steers to £1840.
JS Clark & Sons, Catforth saw their Hereford steers to £1880. Simmental steers sold to £1760 for a pair from SH&LE Birkett, Carnforth with other Simmental steers to £1660 for a pen of four from Low Moor Howe, Winster. British Blues sold to £1780 from H Birkett & Son, Overton with others at £1680 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Friesian steers would be the trade of the day, topping at £1680 from R&E Ladds, Kendal at twenty months old, with others at £1480 from L Parsons, Levens. Plenty more pens were around the £1200 to £1350 mark. A consignment of IOM cattle saw their cattle top at £1540 for Shorthorns with other good farming cattle from across the water round the £1200 mark.
A decent average of £1240 for all heifers today, topping at £1660 from JC Prickett, Mewith for a Limousin. Other Limousin heifers sold to £1540 from EJ Ward, Nether Kellet. EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine usual run of well farmed cattle saw Simmental to £1560 and Shorthorn to the same price. Angus heifers were easily sold today, with L Parsons & Sons, Leven seeing his pen of four cattle reach £1540. British Blues sold to £1650 for a pair from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling with others at £1540 from J&JA Burrow, Grayrigg.

OTM trade holds firm, with what was a leaner then average show today.
Top pence per kilo was 264.5 for a Bazadaize cow from BD&PM Gill, Ingleton grossing £1692. OTM heifers sold to 259.5p/kg from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale. A Saler cast bull from TW&C Shepherd achieved 259.5p/kg and the best of the dairy cows reaching 209.5p/kg from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. Parlour type cows regularly 170p/kg to 185p/kg.
Top grossing price reached £2058 for an Aberdeen Angus bull from P&M Crackles, Burrow and £1733.15 for a Limousin cow from JL Atkinson, Kendal. Black and whites sold to £1525.48 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham with the best of these the top side of £1400.
