Spring Lambs

More spring lambs were forward today selling to a similar trade on the week, Texel lambs sold to £192 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore with Suffolks from the same home to £178. First cross Suffolks sold to £171 from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. More spring lambs are needed on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers requirements.

Prime Hoggs

Less hoggs were forward but a super trade was seen for all types, with an averaged of 376p/kg achieved. Heavy well bred hoggs were in strong demand with Beltex cross hoggs to £242 from T Taylor, Woodplumpton with others from the same home to £233 and £230. A pen of super heavy hoggs from T&D Wright, Roeburndale sold to £225 for Mashams. Pens of Cheviots sold to £223 from J&H Davis, Cabus. Best bred hoggs saw a sharp trade, with the best to 455p/kg for Beltex cross from AG Butler, Hambleton with others to 450p/kg from T Taylor, Woodplumpton. The best bred hoggs were regularly 420p/kg plus and over thirty pens sold over £200.

The ewe trade went up a gear, with an overall average of £138 per head. Charolais cross ewes topped at £262 from GS Lander, Cheshire who sold others to £252. Texels sold to £250 from R Doran, Preston and Beltex cross to £232 from I Richardson, Catforth. Mule ewes would be the dearest for some time, with the best at £193 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead and other pens to £175 from GS Lander, Cheshire. Hill ewes saw Cheviots to £170 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead, with the best of the Swaledales to £138 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. More ewes could have easily been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

A nice run of aged Texel ewes with Beltex cross lambs from TR Gorst, Bay Horse saw pens with twins to £290 twice and pens of single to £210. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with young Texel cross lambs sold to £242. Please note the annual show and sale of hoggs with lambs will be held next Monday.

Spring Lambs

More spring lambs were on offer this week, which were met by the keenest ring side of buyers seen this season. Dorset sold to £237 from N Waller, Killington with Texel cross Dorsets to £218 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. Beltex cross lamb sold to the same price from JT&A Armistead, Selside with this home also selling their best bred lambs to 480p/kg and 475p/kg. An overall average of 452p/kg was achieved.

Prime Hoggs

850 hoggs were forward with many being vendors last draws. Once again well meated and hard fed hoggs were keenly bid for a Junction 36. Heavy Texels sold to £234 from JB Airey, Kendal with Beltexs to £230 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. Suffolks sold to £218 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. The best heavy hoggs would be a shade less than last week but many pens were still £200 plus. Handy weighted hoggs were in the keenest demand, with these regularly 430p/kg to 450p/kg. The best bred hoggs sold to 500p/kg from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet with others to 490p/kg from L Parson & Sons, Levens. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviot to £210 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh with Mules topping at £186 from SH & LE Birkett, Carnforth. Pens of BFL’s sold to £180 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston with Swaledales to £170 from WI&AM Atkinson, Bleasdale who also sold pens of Dalebreds to the same price.

Cull ewes were a phenomenal trade, with all sheep sold averaged £138.05 for 412 forward. The best heavy pure ewes sold to £350 from R&E Ladds, Kendal, with others at £295 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and endless pens at £250 to £280. Heavy first cross ewes sold to £230 for Texel cross from G Beresford & Son, Kirkby in Furness with others at £228 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby. Other heavy end were £195 to £215, mediums £160 to £180 and smaller meated ewes £120 to £140. Mules sold to £205, with others at £190. Heavy mules were regularly £175 to £185, the stronger end £150 to £165 with medium meated £110 to £130. Pure hill ewes sold to £210 for Cheviots, Lleyns £190, Rough Fells £162, Dalesbreds £152, SBF £150, Swaledales £138 and Herdwick £138. Medium hill ewes were £90 to £110z, with only the leanest and smallest less.

Cull rams sold to £290 for a Charolais from T Pye, Leece. Other continental were £180 to £225. Hill rams to £205 for Cheviot, £165 Welsh and £100 Swaledale.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

902 lives were forward at the weekly sheep with lambs at foot sale, which were met by a busy ring side of travelled and local buyers. The sale peaked at £348 for first cross Texel shearlings with twin lambs from G&KM Atkinson, Colby. Other Texel shearling with Beltex cross twin lambs sold to £335 from R Allison & Son, Kirkby Stephen. Aged Texel ewes with strong Texel twin lambs sold to £315 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby. A ring full of Suffolk cross ewes with Texel lambs sold to £302 from A&RA Middleton, Cowan Bridge. Mule ewes sold to £300 with Texel lambs from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with other Mule ewes to £290 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby. Aged Texel ewes with Beltex cross single lambs sold to £282 from Northern Trading, Kirkby Thore. Other singles sold to £278 from R Allison & Sons, Kirkby Stephen. Mule hoggs sold to £252 from RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck. More hill bred ewes were forward today, meeting plenty of demand. Cheviot ewes with Texel lambs sold to £235 from J Whitton, Cartmel with single Cheviot ewes with Texel lambs sold to £180 from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Great Annual Grass Day- Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle and Store Cattle, Thursday 2nd May 2024.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of calves at Junction 36 saw a strong entry sell to a good trade. Bull calves sold to £480 on two occasions both for British Blues, firstly from Dolphenby Farming, Penrith and JW& TE Sharpe, Lyth. Others sold to £470 from A Pickthall, New Hutton with generally all Blue bull calves selling over £350, with only a few baby calves less. Limousins bulls sold to £380 and Aberdeen Angus’s reached £375. Dairy bulls sold to £225 for a Friesian from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with the next best generally £100 to £150.

A good show of weaned bulls were forward which saw British Blues sell to £550 from JR&S Handley, Haversham with Aberdeen Augus at £480 from W&S Airey, Whittington.

The best of the heifer calves sold to £400 for a British Blue from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with others at £380 from JW& TE Sharpe, Lyth. A good show of young heifer calves saw month olds sell to £240 for British Blues from TK Robinson & Sons, Old Hutton.

The best of the weaned heifer calves sold to £450 for an Aberdeen Angus from W Stamper, Chipping with other Aberdeen Angus’s at £420 from W&S Airey, Whittington. Weaned Charolais’s sold to £400 from G&SM Stephenson, Ravenstonedale. A freshly weaned beef Shorthorn from GA Sunter, Kirkby Lonsdale sold to £310.

The sale topped at £2250 for a British Blue cross heifer from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness. Strong Limousins bullocks saw a top of £1900 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor who also sold full pens to £1750. Yearling bullocks were in keen demand with Limousins to £1700 from N Cooper & Sons, Broughotn in Furness with others at £1680 from R Allen, Staveley and £1620 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside. The best were regularly £1460 to £1500 and nice grazing sorts £1100 to £1150.

Away from the show heifers sold to £1730 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead with a pen of Limousins to £1700 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. Aberdeen Angus’s sold to £1580 from HW Robinson & Son, Gatebeck and British Blues to £1550 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Yearling heifers sold to £1540 from RH&C Ayrton, Abystead for British Blues with Limousins to the same price from JA&KJ Allen, Ings. The best yearling heifers were regularly around the £1400 mark, with nice grazers £1080 to £1150.

Several bulls forward today, selling to a top price of £1060 for young Stabiliser cross from M Allen, Carnforth with other younger bulls generally £850 to £850.

The younger handler show had a small but outstanding line up forward, which we congratulate all the competitors. Limousin heifers sold to £2000 from Lilly Shuttleworth, Barbon and Limousin bullocks twice to £1820 twice from Masie Beresford, Kirkby in Furness.

68 cull cows were forward which sold to an overall averaged of 168p/kg, with over half the entry being diary cows. The best beef cows sold to 229p/kg for a Limousin cross from E Dodgson, Kendal with others at 219p/kg from CI Briggs, High Wray with medium beef cows regularly 190p/kg to 210p/kg. A keen interest in those suitable for feeding. Top grossing being a Aouth Devon from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston achieving £1652 with Simmentals to £1606 from JT Proctor, Flookburgh and Hereford cross £1603 from Ireland Farm, Kirkby Lonsdale. Best meated dairy cows were regularly 190p/kg to 200p/kg. Topping at 227p/kg from Stickland Hill Farms, Witherslack. Top grossing also from Stickland Hill Farming, Witherslack achieving £1481.

OTM heifers sold to 214.5p/kg and £1416 from RG&J Clark, Endmoor.

Calves and Weanlings

98 rearing calves forward today which sold to an extremely fast and competitive trade, with more required every week. Rearing beef bulls sold to £440 for a pair of British Blue cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others stronger end £380 to £420. Medium reares sold to £290 from Barber Farms, Garstang. Young Limousin cross sold to £255 from D&K Howarth, Hambleton. Native sired bulls sold to £400 from Miss J Miller, Barnacre with others at £400 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. Young Longhorn bulls sold to £250 from JE&S Seedall, Mellor. Dairy bulls sold to £185 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with others regularly £90 to £130.

Rearing heifer calves sold to £360 for a British Blue cross again from JP&C Robson, Garstang with month old heifers to £355 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and Limousins to £340 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Young native sired heifers sold to £330.

54 weaned calves and young stirks sold to a packed ring side of buyers, all keen to purchase ahead of the immediate turnout. Bulls sold to £850 for a six month old Aberdeen Angus cross from CR Dickinson, Thurnham. A consignment of four month old Hereford cross bulls from JR Newsham, Conder Green sold to £660, with others regularly £600 to £640. Younger weaned bulls sold to £565 for a British Blue cross from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore who sold others at £500.

Weaned heifers sold to £640 for a four month old British Blue cross from JC Morphet, Hale with others at £615 from J&CG Redmayne, Samlesbury and Aberdeen Angus cross to £580 from CR Dickinson, Thurnham. Stronger heifer stirks sold to £690 and £685 for Hereford cross from AV Bailey, Westhouse. Weaned steers sold to £650 for British Blue cross from JC Morphet, Hale and J&CG Redmayne, Samlesbury who also sold Aberdeen Angus at £605 and £600. Stronger Hereford cross steer stirks sold to £855 from E Lund & Son, Ingleton who sold others at £800 and £795 for the best from AV Bailey, Westhouse.

A real bonanza in the store ring saw all vendors leave well suited with prices achieved. Steers sold to £1810 for a trio of British Blue cross from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh with a trio of Limousins to £1800 from H Chapman & Son, Carnforth and Aberdeen Angus cross £1780 from C Hargreaves & Son, Overton. Other strong steers were regularly £1500 to £1700, with all sold averaging £1322. Heifers sold to £1800 for British Blue cross from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh with others at £1680 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling and Limousin to £1660 from L Parson & Son, Levens. Other strong heifer were regularly £1400 to £1450, with all sold averaging £1244.

An increased entry of cull cows forward sold to an overall market average of 188p/kg, with a large proportion of the sale being diary bred cows. Beef cows sold to 244.5p/kg for a Stabiliser from J&A Smales, Ingleton with others generally 195p/kg to 220p/kg. A top price of £1695 was achieved for an Aberdeen Angus from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Heavy well fleshed diary cows also sold to 244p/kg from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with others regularly 210p/kg to 250p/kg. Top grossing being another from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine achieving £1736. Strong parlour type cows were regularly 175p/kg to 190p/kg, achieving regularly £1150 to £1280.

OTM heifers sold to 259p/kg and £1826 for Aberdeen Angus cross from I Atkinson & Son, Warton with dairy heifers to 244.5p/kg and £1907 for a Holstein Friesian from Drinkall Bross, Over Wyresdale. Other diary heifers were generally 195p/kg to 210p/kg.

OTM steers sold to 281.5p/kg for a Limousin from H Chapman & Son, Carnforth with others regularly 240p/kg to 260p/kg. Topping at 236p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus cross from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton.
