On Farm Dispersal Sale: JM Taylor & Son Farm Sale, Saturday 29th July 2023.

North West Auctions conducted the dispersal sale on behalf of JM Taylor & Son, Russell Farm on Saturday 29th July, buyers from throughout the northern counties were in attendance.

A Kubota RX900 sold at £5300, Transpread Lime Spreader £4100, Amazone Fert Spreader £2750, 12m Sprayer £2700, Weigh Platform £2150, Toyota Forklift £1800. Other items of interest included a ride on mower achieving £1050, log splitter £500, horse trailer £220, PTO Generator £160.

Prime Lambs

A better entry of lambs was forward this morning at Lancaster Mart, best bred and meated lambs continuing to sell to a fast trade with leaner types a little less. An overall market averaged of 258p/kg was achieved. Heavy lambs would be a shade sharper on the week, Texels sold to £158 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham with others to £150 from B&J Preston, Caton. First draw lambs from J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton saw his best pens sell to £149 for Texels. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £140 from J&R Waller, Killington. Lancaster always has plenty of demand for the best butcher bred lambs with Beltexs selling to £133 or 302p/kg from JS Horner, Ingleton. The best bred lambs regularly sold at 285p/kg to 300p/kg. Continental bred lambs were regularly selling at 270p/kg to 275p/kg. More lambs are required on a weekly basis, to fulfil our strong ringside of nine active buyers.

Cast Sheep

140 ewes were forward with meat continuing to sell to a fast trade, and leaner ewes looking less money on the week. Suffolks led the way selling to £134 from WN&D Smith & Son, Cockerham. Charollais ewes sold to £133 from CP&V Cowgill, Bentham. Mule ewes saw the best pen sell to £128 for a pen of seven from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham with heavy Mules regularly selling either side of the £110 mark and medium types selling at £80 to £90. Hill ewes saw a top price of £70 for Lonks from A Brown, Littledale.

Breeding Sheep

A selective trade was seen for breeding rams, with buyers looking for well grown tup shearlings with good skins and a good carcass and a little selective over second class tups. Texel shearlings sold to a top of £480 from S Roberts, Clitheroe with other Texel shearling to £400 from RT&ME Sutton, Stainton. Charollais x Texel shearlings sold to a top of £380 from M&S Blease, Carnforth.

The opening sale of breeding ewes at Lancaster Mart had a packed ringside of buyers, with a real buzz around the ring. The sale topped at £205 for pure Suffolk shearlings from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine who sold other pens to £200. A pen of ten home bred Texel shearlings from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale sold to £200, with Beltex x shearlings selling to £190 from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale. A lovely run of well farmed gimmer shearling from DJ Casson & Sons, Slyne attracted plenty of interest with their best pens selling twice to £185 and their run of 75 averaging £180.

Ewe trade was a little selective, with buyers keen to purchase strong, fully vaccinated ewes. Young Texel ewes sold to £158 from PD Anderton, Scorton. Four crop Texel ewes from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale sold to £148.

Prime Lambs

1100 lambs forward sold to an overall market averaged of 252p/kg with lambs ranging from 34kg to 64kg. The best heavy weight lambs continue to sell to a premium this week, peaking at £155 for Texel x lambs from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Suffolk x sold to £151 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other heavy weight lambs (48kg plus) generally achieving £130 to £140. Medium weight lambs sold to £136 for Texel x from J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton and £134 from D&S Robinson, Old Hutton and others generally £114 to £122. Buyer showing caution towards under finished lambs. Well finished light weight lambs continue to attract a keen buyer interest, selling to £97 for Texel x from Messrs Beaty, Troutbeck with others at £95 from JR Robinson, Endmoor. Top price today of 295p/kg was achieved on two occasions for Texel x lambs form J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton and AJ&SE Burrow, Milnthorpe. Other well finished pure and ¾ bred lambs were generally 270p/kg to 290p/kg with first x lambs 250p/kg to 275p/kg. Hill bred lambs are starting to come forward in greater numbers, with Mules selling to £112 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

An entry of 557 local farmer ewes saw buyers keen to fulfil orders for all classes and types, to include several grazing orders. A shortage of real heavy ewes saw Texel x sell to £154 from JC Dunning, Orton with others at £144 from R&E Ladds, Kendal and £143 from IL Dixon, Cantsfield. Medium pure bred and ¾ bred ewes were keenly sort after at £120 to £140. Other heavy first x ewes generally £128 to £140 depending on breed and quality. Mules sold to £140 for Cheviot Mules from R&E Ladds, Kendal, North Country Mules selling to £138 from Calderside Farm, Garstang with others at £123 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Other heavier Mules generally £100 to £112, with medium sorts £88 to £98. Hill bred ewes sold to £90 for Rough Fells from I Carridice, Tebay with Swaledales selling to £85 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Cheviots to £80 from NP&CE Buckley, Staveley and Herdwicks sold to £73 from BR Harrison, Staveley. A large entry of smaller ewes, having worked hard this summer were generally £45 to £65, depending on bred and quality. A pen of goat weanlings from GA Guy, Tebay sold at £89. Cull rams sold to £160 for BFL’s with others at £154.

Rearing and Weaned Calves

A record entry of weanlings and weaned calves saw 164 forward, with an ever-expanding ring side of new buyers and sellers in attendance. K Wrathall Ltd, Broughton in Furness waited patiently to sell the penultimate calf of the day to a new centre record of £640 for a one month and twenty seven day old Limousin x bull. Other strong Continental bull calves were regularly £380 to £450, to include a British Blue x at £440 from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall who also sold Charolais x at £430. A quality run of Limousin x calves from Bambers Farm, Cockerham sold to £405 with others to £400. Younger calves sold to £360 for a Limousin x from Langley Park Farms, Millom with others at £355 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. Simmental and Aberdeen Angus x achieved £350 from Bambers Farm, Thurnham. Hereford x bulls sold to £310 from W Stamper, Chipping with other medium native sired bull calves regularly £280 to £300. Young rearing calves sold to £300 from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby with Limousin x to £300 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton with the very smallest £175 to £220. A pair of Belted Galloway bull calves out of Friesian cows from TW Handley, Sedbergh sold to £385. Dairy bulls sold to £165 for a three week old Montbeliarde from Colby Farms Ltd, Appleby with other rearing types £90 to £140, with the smallest £30 to £50 depending on breed and quality.

Heifer calves sold to £400 for a Limousin x from Langley Park Farms, Millom with British Blue x selling to £400 from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall and £390 from W Stamper, Chipping. Rearing heifers were generally £270 to £340, with mediums sorts £220 to £260 and the smallest and youngest £140 to £200.

57 weaned calves and stirks saw five month old Aberdeen Angus x bulls sell to £540 from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal who sold other beef bred bull at £450 to £500 (4-6 month old). Diary bulls sold to £485 for Fleckviehs, again from JS&KM Wilson & Son with Holstein Friesians selling to £430 from Whitestone Farm, Penrith.

British Blue x steers sold to £865 from Bambers Farms Ltd, Cockerham who sold others at £830. Limousin x steers sold to £740 from JR Pye, Stalmine with younger steers selling to £650 for Limousin x from D Wightman & A Mason, Burton in Kendal.

Heifer sold to £740 for a pair of Limousin x from Bambers Farms Ltd, Cockerham, Aberdeen Angus x at £650 and British Blues x at £600. Other younger beef heifers sold to £595 for British Blues x from MW&PA Rollason, Meathop with others at £590 from D Wightman & A Maso, Burton in Kendal. Recently weaned Aberdeen Angus x heifers from Messrs Young, Lindale sold at £400.

A seasonal entry of store cattle saw a top price of £1280 achieved for a fifteen month old Hereford x steers from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. A two year old Parthenaise x form S&M Cooper, Leece selling at £1260 and Simmental x from S&M Carter, Witherslack achieving £1240. Other stronger steers were regularly selling at £1100 to £1250, to include Friesians from AJ&H Clark, Sedbergh achieving £1235 and Dairy Shorthorns achieving £1170 from S&M Cooper, Leece. Younger steers sold to £1120 for a Hereford x from RJ Stalker, Ulverston with Limousin x achieving £1090 from K&S Troughton, Sedbergh and Aberdeen Angus x to £1085 from MW&PA Rollason, Meathop.

Heifers sold to £1375 for a Limousin x heifer from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton who sold other full pens at £1320. A full pen of British Blue x heifers sold at £1275 and £1265 from S&M Cooper, Leece with others at £1200 from JT&A Armistead, who also sold Charolais x at £1175. Younger heifers were generally selling at £850 to £950.

OTM Cattle

Despite the reports of the falling deadweight price, an overall market averaged of 158p/kg was achieved for all cull cows sold today. Beef cows sold to 219.5p/kg and 214.5p/kg for Stabilises from A Dixon & Son, Selside. Feeding type cows sold to 184.5p/kg from JT Proctor, Grange Over Sands with other feeding type cows generally 175p/kg to 185p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 201.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby. An

entry of predominately leaner parlour type cows sold at 130p/kg to 155p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing cow was a Limousin x from JT Proctor, Grange Over Sands achieving £1370, with dairy cows selling to £1248 for a Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.

OTM heifer sold to 175.5p/kg and £1254 for an overage Limousin x from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. OTM dairy heifers sold to 174.5p/kg and £1113 for a Holstein Friesian from JN&JD Bowes, Crook. Stock bulls sold to 134.5p/kg and £1521 for an Aberdeen Angus from JW&E Woof & Son, Sedbergh.

91 rearing and weaned calves were forward at the popular weekly sale with buyers attracted by the quality and quantity on offer. Rearing bull calves sold to a top price of £400 for a British Blue x from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock with Aberdeen Angus x just a bid behind at £395 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Pilling with others at £385 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Month old well bred bull calves sold to £330 for a Charolais x from JE&SM Seedall, Mellor with others regularly £290 to £320. Younger bull calves sold to £265 for a three week old British Blue x from RT Halhead, Cockerham with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £250 from Wallbank Farm Ltd, Over Wyresdale and Charolais x £240 from WG Farms, Cockerham. Dairy bulls sold to £200 for a British Friesian from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with Holstein Friesians selling to £170 from TE&MM Kidd, Ellel. Other stronger rearers were £80 to £120 and mediums £50 to £70.

Additional buyers ring side saw all classes sell to their full value, despite the falling deadweight prices. Today sale peaked at £1820 for an Aberdeen Angus x steer from R Townsend, Freckleton with a Parthenaise x achieving £1740 from J&H Bland & Son, Levens. A ring full of Aberdeen Angus x steers from T Robson & Son, Singleton achieving £1590 and British Blue x from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling sold at £1550, with others at £1520 from D&N Davis, Nateby. Other well grown steers were regularly £1380 to £1460, to include a ring full of Montbeliarde at £1460 from D&N Davis, Nateby and Holstein Friesians selling to £1410 from BW&G Robinson, Ingleton. All steers forward averaged £1260.

Other stronger heifers were generally £1300 to £1460, to include British Blue x at £1450 from J&H Bland & Son Ltd, Levens. There was a keen interest in heifers suitable for grazing, selling to £1180 for a pen full of Limousin x from JP&L Eccleston, Grimsargh who sold two ring fulls of Aberdeen Angus x at £1130 and £1120.

Cast/ OTM Cattle

Cull cows sold to an overall market average of 151p/kg and £999, with 90% of the entry being dairy cows. Of the beef cows forward a top price of 224.5p/kg was achieved for an Aberdeen Angus x from SJ Gunn, Milnthorpe who sold others at 214.5p/kg. A top price of £1483 was achieved for a Welsh Black from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer. Heavy weight dairy cows sold to 174.5p/kg and £1430 for a Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham with other medium dairy cow generally 145p/kg to 165p/kg with the leanest 115p/kg to 130p/kg.

OTM dairy heifers sold to 164.5p/kg and £1135 for a Holstien Friesian from J&N Hull & Sons, Winmarleigh. Steers sold to 239.5p/kg and £1389 for a British Blue x from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham with Holstien Friesian stock bulls sold to 179.5p/kg from JE&ME&JP Seed, Claughton on Brock. Other selling to £974 from J Burrow & Son, Barton.
