Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, OTM's and Store Cattle. Friday 5th January 2024. STORE CATTLE TO £2100, OTM TO 279.5p/kg and £1969, WEANED CALVES TO £570, REARING CALVE £550. The opening Friday sale at North West Auctions Lancaster saw all classes and types of cattle sell to a fast and competitive trade, with all sellers leaving very suited with trade and new customers in attendance, both buying and selling. Calves & Weanlings A good start to the year with 112 calves forward, with new customers once again in attendance. Ten week old British Blue bulls from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale sold to £565 with other stronger rearing bull calves to £550 for British Blue cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang. A consignment of Hereford cross from TE&M Kidd, Ellel sold to £550 with others at £545 and £540. Medium rearing bulls sold to £495 for a Limousin cross from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall who sold month old Charolais cross at £480, with others at £435. Other younger bull calves sold to £365 for a twenty three day old Limousin cross from D&K Howorth, Hambleton. Other month old bull calves were generally £250 to £300. Weaned bull calves sold to £570 for a five month old Aberdeen Angus cross from JK&B Birkett & Son,

Store Cattle Stores sold to a fast and competitive trade, with buyers eager to fill sheds after the Christmas break. All classes and types sold ahead of vendors expectations, with more needed to satisfy buyer demand. Steers sold to a top price of £1840 for a Limousin cross from H Chapman & Son, Middleton, who also sold a trio of Charolais cross at £1800. British Blue cross sold to £1770 from KG&LM Park, Witherslack with a ring full of Charolais cross from WJ&LA Barker, Arkholme achieving £1700 and Aberdeen Angus cross to £1680 from FJ&R Coar, Clitheroe. Other stronger end steers were regularly £1500 to £1660. Dairy bred steers sold to £1470 for Fleckviehs from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling with others at £1450 form CG Birkett, Carnforth and £1220 for Holstein Friesian from FJ&R Coar, Clitheroe. OTM Cattle The sale commenced with 125 cull cows, with an overall market average of 165p/kg achieved. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to a top price of 254.5p/kg for a Limousin cross form JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside with others at 209p/kg from RG&H Preece, Roeburndale and 199p/kg from B&SE Carter, Ellel. Other were regularly 180p/kg to 195p/kg and medium types 160p/kg to 175p/kg, with a keen interest in those suitable for finishing. Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin cross from JG&PH Thompson& Sons, Selside achieving £1666. Closely followed by another Limousin cross from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby at £1643. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 174.5p/kg for heavy well fleshed Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham and Lawsons Dairy Ltd, Cockerham and G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel with Montbeliardes from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. OTM heifers beef heifers sold to 279.5p/kg and £1869 for a Limousin from AR Thompson, Selside with Simmental cross to 264.5p/kg and £1484 from EJ&P Burrow, Storth. Diary heifers sold to 254.5p/kg for a Montbeliardes from SJ Gunn, Milnthorpe and £1718 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. OTM steers sold to 264.5p/kg and £1969 for Aberdeen Angus cross from J Oddie, Balderstone.
