Prime Lambs

Numbers and prices are rising at NWA Lancaster with an entry just short of 600 forward, selling to an overall market average of 258p/kg. Heavy well finished lambs sold to a top of £149 for a pen of Texel cross from HJ&BE Kelsall, Gressingham with others regularly £125 to £135. Standard weight lambs sold to £127 for Beltex x from A&E Clarkson Ltd, Thurnham with others also achieving £127 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green and D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Well bred light weight lambs sold to £110 from J Gardner, Bay Horse. Today sale peaked at 305p/kg for Beltex x lambs from GR&A Foy, Conder Green with other pure and ¾ bred lambs regularly 275p/kg to 290p/kg. The best first cross lambs were 250p/kg to 270p/kg. Light weight lambs sold to 282p/kg from J Gardner, Bay Horse. Hill lambs are coming forward in greater numbers, with Masham’s selling to £110 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale with Mules to £109 from D&D Huddleston, Wray and Cheviots to £106.

Cast Sheep

Cull ewes sold to £118 for a Texel cross from KA Purtill, Wigan with other stronger cross bred ewes £105 to £116. Mules sold to £90 from A&E Clarkson Ltd, Thurnham with hill ewes selling to £105 for Cheviots from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Swaledales sold to £63 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale and Dalesbred to £57 from A&M Wright, Roeburndale.

Vendors are encouraged so bring lambs in a finished condition to achieve maximum return, with under finished lambs perhaps more suited to the buoyant store market.

Prime Lambs

1262 lambs sold to a fast trade with all keenly bid for, in front of our ringside of ten active buyers. Heavy lambs once again sold to a premium at J36, with Texels selling twice to £157 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe with Beltexs selling to £154 from JD&M Capstick, Bootle. Meny pens of well meated heavy lambs were regularly selling at £130 to £135. Smart bred lambs sold to a sharper trade with 41kg Beltexs selling at £128 from WS Burrow, Silverdale with other pens selling to £126 for 40kg lambs from RT Colbear, Appleby. More hill bred lambs were

on offer today with Mules selling to £117 from JD&M Capstick, Bootle with others pens to £112 twice from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale. Cheviots sold to £110 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside with Swaledales topping at £108 from JD&M Capstick, Bootle. Best bred lambs sold to 300p/kg from WS Burrow, Silverdale with Texels to 292p/kg from Messrs Young, Lindale. Continental export type lambs were regularly 260p/kg to 270p/kg.

Cast Sheep

654 cull ewes were forward being a noticeably leaner entry of pronominally hill bred ewes. Heavy well bred ewes were in short supply, selling to £158 for a Texel cross ewe from DJ&A Douthwaite, Penrith with others at £156 from D&C Middleton, Carnforth and £148 from JM&NJ Strickland, Kendal. Heavy cross bred ewes sold to £128 for a Suffolk cross from S&B Capstick, Old Hutton. Texel cross sold to £117 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside. Mules sold to £94 from GR Wilson, Natland, with an entry of predominately light weight to medium ewes £70 to £85. Hill ewes sold to £99 for a pen of Cheviots form C Wilson, Witherslack with Lleyns to £92 from RJ&R Holden, Millom. Gritstones sold to £80 from CG&KE Heeley, Penrith, Swaledales sold to £73 from N Burton, Sedbergh and Rough Fells £67 from W Beck & Son, Tebay. A large proportion of the sale today comprised of lean head work Swaledale and Herdwick ewes with the best selling to £46 from Messrs Clegg & Bennett, Broughton in Furness, with the better end £40 to £30 and smallest £18 to £25. A special mention to a pen of nanny goats from CM Crayton, Seascale which sold at £98.

Store Lambs

The largest entry to date of store lambs saw 5657 forward, achieving an overall market average of £81.47, with a large proportion of the sale being long keep hill bred lambs. The sale peaked at £121 for a pen of Beltex lambs from JM Smith, Cartmel Fell, with other well bred Continental lambs regularly £100 to £112. First cross lambs sold to £107 for Texel cross from Coward Brothers, Kirkby in Furness with others at £106 from JA&CA Gibson, Selside. Suffolks sold to £102 from Coward Brothers, Kirkby in Furness. Large pens of level well drawn lambs

attracted keen buyer attention, nicely selling at £91 to £99. Mules sold to £93 from Messrs Beaty, Windermere with others at £91 from JF Robinson, Broughton in Furness. Other stronger pens £86 to £90 and mediums £75 to £82 depending on quantity and strength. Other hill bred lambs sold to £97 for Cheviots from JW Hodgson, Ambleside. Medium keep lambs were generally £82 to £88, with smaller lambs £72 to £84 and the very smallest £55 to £66.

The next sale of store lambs is on Thursday 19th with another large entry required to satisfy nation wide buyer interest.

The second sale of gimmer lambs saw a packed ring side of travelled and local buyers. The sale peaked at £146 for a pen of Lleyn Mules from P Knowles, New Hutton who sold others at £144 and £140. North Country Mules sold to £134 from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale with others a £132 from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer and £103 from RI Dixon, Low Newton. Stronger North Country Mules achieved £120 to £130, with an entry of predominately running type lambs selling at £98 to £106 with the very smallest £85 to £92. An overall market averaged of £96.82.

The next sale of breeding sheep is on Saturday 21st October being the Lakeland Fair, and the concluding breeding sheep sale of the season.

Dairy Cattle

New calved cows sold to £1620 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling with heifers selling to £1580 from France Bros, Littledale.

Calves & Weanlings

Calves saw the stronger bull calves sell to £405 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead with other stronger beef bulls £300 to £380. Mediums calves were regularly £240 to £280, with the very youngest £120 to £200. Heifers sold to £450 and £440 for Hereford x from TE&M Kidd, Ellel, with other nice rearing heifers £300 to £370, with the younger heifers £220 to £280 and the very smallest and youngest £110 to £140.

Store Cattle

NWA Lancaster once again proved to be the chosen place to sell store cattle, with a large ring side of buyers in attendance for all classes and types. The best well grown steers regularly sold at £1500 to £1700. This week peaking at £1760 from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang. Heifers saw top price of £1620 for a Charolais x from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe with other stronger heifer regularly £1300 to £1500. All steers today average £1266 and all heifers averaged £1154.

Cull cows saw an overall market averaged of 154p/kg, with an entry of predominately dairy bred cows. Beef cows sold to 219.5p/kg from TW Gorst, Crook and £1633 from JE&AC Clarke & Son, Melling. Dairy cows sold to 189.5p/kg from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington and £1470 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme. Medium cows were generally 155p/kg to 170p/kg, with the leaner end 130p/kg to 150p/kg. OTM heifers sold to 227.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling and £1417 from J Huddleston, Brookhouse.

OTM steers sold to 284.5p/kg and £1820 for a Charolais x from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling. Cull bulls sold to 199.5p/kg from JR&S Handley, Milnthorpe and £1422 from J Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet.
