Prime Lambs
CHRISTMAS CHAMPIONS SELL TO £200 AND 435P/KG.
NWA held its annual Christmas prize show and sale of prime lambs on Monday 2nd December, which this year was kindly judged by Mr Alfie Blacklidge, Chorley and sponsored by J Bargh Welding and Fabrication, Morecambe and Northern Fallen Stock Ltd, Dalton in Furness. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Beltex cross lambs weighing 46kg from regular supporter AG Butler, Hambleton which later sold for the sales top price of £200 per head and 435p/kg, and were purchased by the judge. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to a trio of Beltex cross lambs from GR&A Foy, Conder Green which were also purchased by the judged at £161.
Away from the show, other well finished and well bred lambs saw Texels sell to £165 from J Pinder & Sons, Newton, £164 from HJ&BE Kelsall, Gressingham and £161 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Other well-bred heavy weights were £145 to £155. The best standard weights sold to £150 for Texel cross from KA Purtill, Wigan with others £140 to £150 and first cross £130 to £138. Pure hill lambs sold to £146 for Cheviots from P Prickett, Hutton Roof, with others at £144 from D&D Huddleston, Wray. Mashams sold to £140.50 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale, Cheviot Mules £140 A&J Smith, Ingleton. Mules sold to £127 and horned lambs to £111.
Well finished lambs were nicely selling at 320p/kg to 340p/kg, first cross were 290p/kg to 305p/kg, with best grass fed lambs 280p/kg to 295p/kg. Leaner lambs were a more selective trade at 260p/kg to 280p/kg. Several pens of light weight lambs sold to £115 and 311p/kg. Todays sale saw an overall average of 297p/kg.

Cheviots Mules sold to £160 from A&J Smith, Ingleton, North Country Mules £140 from WJ&EA Woodhouse, Nateby with other stronger medium Mules £120 to £130. Hill ewes sold to £122 for Gritstones and £116 for Cheviots. Lighter leaner horned ewes to £88 for Rough Fells, £80 Swaledale and £78 Dalesbred. Prime Lambs
Butchers Bonanza sale sees Christmas come early for vendors. Despite a slightly lower pence per kilo average in the week, many lambs made the same or more as the previous sale with buyers proving just slightly more picky and a longer number of lighter lambs forward.
The champion pen of sheep today topped at 500p/kg for three exceptional Beltexs from J Smith, Brookhouse. These were bought by the days judge George Hamlet of Hamlets Butchers, Garstang who did a fantastic job of judging our thirty one trios forward for the pre sale show.

Cull ewes maintain and exceed expectations at NWA Junction 36.
Several better bred ewes forward today but not the power of previous weeks, selling to £176 for Texels with other mediums £155 to £170, smaller sorts with meat £125 to £145 and the leaner end £105 to £115.
Mules sold to £140 with other heavier end £130 plus, meated mediums £118 to £125 and smaller sorts £95 to £110. Pure hill ewes sold to £150 for Cheviots, £125 Rough Fells, £122 Swaledale and £112 for Dalesbreds. The Christmas prize awards for the highest priced pen of five of more ewes was awarded as followed: Mules – Calderside Farm, six at £140.

Store lambs gain momentum at Junction 36, good level pens of all breeds easy to sell, to an abundance of buyers.
The sale peaked at £152 for Texels from T Wilson, Selside with a pen of five Beltex from JA&KJ Allen, Ings next at £146. Suffolks sold to £137 from J&R Bell, Crook with short keep lambs regularly the top side of £130. Mules sold to £129 from S Robinson, Martindale with others to £126 from HM Hodgson, New Hutton. Hill bred lambs sold to £113 for Rough Fells from N&E Capstick, Tebay with Cheviot to £107 from JR Robinson, Nook. Swaledale sold to £89 from Westmorland Nicholson, Troutbeck and Herdwicks to £80 from S Procter, Selside.
The sale sold to an overall average of £105.72.

Rearing calves to £570 twice today at Lancasters weekly sale, trade once again good for all classes.
JP & C Robson, Brock made the worth while trip north this morning with their BB bulls selling to £570 & £545. Also at £570 was regular supporters JG Thornley, Kirkham for AA x with H & SD Cornthwaite, Garstang close behind at £550. J & M Coar made the trip from Clitheroe and were well rewarded with AA to £510 with younger AA x to £460 from T & CM Kelsall, Chipping.
Dairy bulls to £240 for month old Fleckvieh from JR Newsham. Heifer calves to £420 for BB from T & CM Kelsall, Chipping with AA x to £395 from JG Thornley, Kirkham and £355 from H & SD Cornthwaite, Garstang. Other younger month old types to £350 & £345 from T & CM Kelsall, Chipping.
Weaned calves to £880 for AA x from IT Richardson, Catforth, with a pair of BB bulls to £850 from TD & A Gardner, Great Eccleston. A nice consignment from FW Rhodes, Ellel reached £590 with heifers in this run to £520 x2.

Lancasters popular weekly sale of store cattle saw a slight reduction in numbers from last weeks entry. Trade for cattle would be very similar if not a pound or 2 more for smaller cattle on offer. Top of the leader board for a second week in a row goes to TJ Lloyd, Settle with a monster of an Aberdeen Angus steer with this big lad sold to a final bid of £2180.Other Aberdeen Angus steers saw T Taylor, Preston at £1980 and KH & D Holden, Pilling at £1920 for a pen of 4. David Moorhouse, Natland saw his consignment of quality cattle top at £2100 for his Charolais steer, with other Charolais steers to £1920 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Limousin steers from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland sold to £2060 with others to £1860 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Good number of Herefords in the market today with TJ Lloyd, Settle to £1900 for a pair of steers with others to £1880 from G Sagar & Son, Caton and J Lamb, Old Glasson selling a pen of 4 to £1820. The 2000 pound barrier being blown out the water, with a pair of British Blue steers to £2100 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Dairy bred steers saw no let up in trade with Fleckviehs and Norwegian Reds to £1880 all from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse, with a ring full of 7 Friesians from TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham at £1390.

Lancaster weekly sale of OTM cattle saw a slight reduction in numbers following last week’s bumper entry. 98 through the bottom ring today, with OTM steers seeing the trade of the day with O Butler, Esprick with Aberdeen Angus otm steers to 304.5p/kg. M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe to £2021 or 269.5p/kg for a Limousin steer with regular Lancaster supporters A Kirkby & Co, Pilling to £1953 or 269.5p/kg for a Hereford steer.
OTM cows from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens to £1753 or 239.5p/kg for a Stabiliser who had other stabilisers at £1744 or 229.5p/kg. Friesian cows to £1719 or 204.5p/kg from PW & JM Norris & Son, Hornby with other Friesian cows to £1438 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham, and £1355 or 234.5p/kg from G & ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel. Cows straight out the parlour round the 180-185p/kg mark.
