The reserve champion was a pair of Beltex’s from the same good home, sell to £165 and purchased by Nathan Brown. Away from the show Beltex’s saw a top of £150 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green with heavy Texels selling to £145 from P Lawrence & Son, Chorley and Suffolks to £142 from G Riley, Bolton Le Sands. Many pens of Continental heavy bred lambs were selling at £130 to £140. Beltex and well bred lambs were in keen demand, with these regularly selling at £300 plus. The best sold to 365p/kg from GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Over half the sale today were hill bred lambs, with these being full of meat selling to a higher demand. Cheviots sold to £133 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton. Masham saw a top of £122.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with other pens of Masham to £122 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East. Mules sold to a top of £119 from WI&A


Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with others to £118 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Mule lambs were regularly sold at 240p/kg to 250p/kg. 100 ewes were forward with a little more life in the job this morning. No real superstars on offer today, with Charollais selling to a top of £126 from A Thornton, Woodplumpton and Texels to £122 from P Lawrence & Son, Chorley. Super Mules sold to £118 from PM Sidebottom, Preston with other pens to £116 from G Riley, Bolton Le Sands. The best Mules were regularly £100 plus with medium types £75 plus. Hill ewes saw Cheviot sell to £74 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead who sold Swaledale to £66. Cast Ewes Top Prices: Charollais: £126, £100, £94 Adamsons Farm, £76 Longstripes Farm. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Butchers Bonanza- Prime Lambs, Prime Pigs & Prime Cattle. Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 5th December 2023. Prime Cattle The Christmas show of prime cattle had a small but an outstanding line up of cattle, which was put before our judge Alan Beecroft of Country Style Meats, Lancaster. After much time and deliberation, he awarded the champion rosette to a British Blue steer from JA Barnett, Shap with this steer previously being purchased from Junction 36. After spirited bidding the champion went of to sell for 470p/kg or £3022 and was purchased by Browns Quality Meats. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the second prize heifer from Masie Beresford, this smart heifer went on to sell for £2803, also being purchased by Browns Quality Meats. An overall averaged of 360p/kg was achieved. Away from the show there was at top of £163 for heavy Texels from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston with heavy’s regularly selling at £135 to £140. A sharper trade was seen for all medium export type lambs, with these selling at 270p/kg to 280p/kg. A pen of 44kg Texels sold to £141 from J Twigge, Lindale. The best bred lambs were regularly 300p/kg plus, with twenty pens selling over this. A top price of 490p/kg was achieved for Beltex’s from JG&PH Thomspon & Sons, Selside with others to 460p/kg from A Prickett, Farleton. Out of the show Texels sold to 365p/kg from JG&PH Thompson & Son, Selside and JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside. More Mule lambs forward with trade a little sharper for these, with a top of £135 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale who sold other pens to £133. More pens sold to £130 from Low Moor Howe, Winster. Prime Pigs The Christmas prize show and sale of pigs saw a top price of £260 achieved for the champion pair being Pietrain cross Large White gilts from loyal supporter W Stamper, Chipping. Other heavy weight gilts sold to £245 from E Spedding, Egremont and £235 from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake and JM Navesey, Darwen. Other well finished pigs were regularly £180 to £210. A top of 267p/kg was achieved for the first prize light weight and reserve champions, being a pair of Large White x gilts with others regularly selling at 200p/kg to 240p/kg. Store Cattle A seasonal show of 150 store cattle with all selling to full value with a full ringside of buyers present. Yearling Limousin bullocks sold to £1280 from A Winder & Son, Ravenstonedale. Dairy bred British Blue bullocks at 16 month old sold to £1230 from J Holme & Son, Ulverston who sold Limousin to the same price. Hereford bullocks saw a top of £1200 from GM Redmayne, Ings. A run of suckler bred bullocks from B Heyes saw his out wintered 8 month old bullocks sell to £950 with other pens selling to £930. Heifer calves sold to £355 for the reserve champion being a British Blue cross from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Mediums rearers sold to £280 for British Blue cross from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Limousin cross to £270 from D&M Foster, Out Rawcliffe. Store Cattle The weekly sale of store cattle included the Christmas prize show and sale of pairs, with several pens of high quality cattle forward for the show. After much deliberation the championship rosette and receiving the Tom Owen memorial trophy was awarded to a pair of Limousin cross steers from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland by the judge Mr J Crapper, Barnsley, who we thank for his time and expertise. These bullocks later when on to sell for £2080, with these cattle being previously purchased from the J36 Grass Day sale. Other heavier well bred beef cows were 199p/kg for a Limousin from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal, D&DW Prickett, Farleton and GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Other beef cows were regularly 175p/kg to 195p/kg with a top grossing today being a Limousin from P Cumming, Burton in Kendal achieving £1464 with others at £1458 and £1394.
